1 Nog sprak Jahweh tot Moses:
Yahweh also told Moses/me,
2 Maak u twee zilveren trompetten van drijfwerk. Zij zullen dienen, om de gemeenschap bijeen te roepen en de kampen te doen opbreken.
“[Tell someone to] make two trumpets by hammering each one from [one lump of] silver. Blow the trumpets to summon the people to come together and also to signal that they must move their tents [to a new location].
3 Blaast men op beide, dan moet heel de gemeenschap zich bij u verzamelen aan de ingang van de openbaringstent.
If both trumpets are blown, it means that everyone must gather together at the entrance of the Sacred Tent.
4 Blaast men er één, dan moeten de aanvoerders, de stamhoofden van Israël, zich bij u vervoegen.
If only one trumpet is blown, it means that only the [twelve] leaders of the tribes must gather together.
5 Maar laat ge ze schetteren, dan moeten de kampen opbreken, die ten oosten zijn gelegerd;
If the trumpets are blown loudly, the tribes that are to the east [of the Sacred Tent] should start to travel.
6 laat ge ze voor de tweede maal schetteren, dan moeten de kampen opbreken, die in het zuiden zijn gelegerd; laat ge ze voor de derde maal schetteren, dan moeten de kampen opbreken, die in het westen zijn gelegerd; en laat ge ze voor de vierde maal schetteren, dan moeten de kampen opbreken, die in het noorden zijn gelegerd. Het schetteren is dus een teken, om op te breken;
When the trumpets are blown loudly the second time, the tribes that are to the south should start to travel. The loud blasts on the trumpet will signal that they should start to travel.
7 om de gemeente bijeen te roepen, moet ge blazen, maar niet schetteren.
When you want only to gather the people together, blow the trumpets, but do not blow them as loudly.
8 De zonen van Aäron, de priesters, moeten op de trompetten blazen; dit is een eeuwige wet van geslacht tot geslacht.
“The priests who are descended from Aaron are the ones who should blow the trumpets. That is a regulation that will never be changed.
9 En wanneer gij in uw land ten strijde trekt tegen den vijand, die u belaagt, dan moet ge op de trompetten schetteren; zo zult ge bij Jahweh, uw God, in herinnering worden gebracht, en van uw vijanden worden verlost.
When you fight against enemies who attack you in your own land, tell the priests to blow the trumpets loudly. I, Yahweh, your God, will hear that, and I will rescue you from your enemies.
10 Ook op uw vreugdedagen en feesten, en op de eerste dag van uw maanden, moet ge bij uw brand- en uw vredeoffers op de trompetten blazen; zo zullen zij u bij uw God in herinnering brengen. Ik ben Jahweh, uw God!
Also tell the priests to blow the trumpets when the people are happy, and at the festivals [each year], and at the times when they celebrate the new moon each month. Tell them to blow the trumpets when the people bring offerings that will be completely burned, and when they bring offerings to maintain fellowship with me. If they do that, it will help you to remember that I, Yahweh your God, [will help you].”
11 In het tweede jaar, in de tweede maand, op de twintigste dag van de maand verhief zich de wolk boven de verbondstabernakel.
On the twentieth day of May in the second year [after the/we Israelis left Egypt], the cloud rose up from above the Sacred Tent.
12 Toen braken de Israëlieten op, en trokken van halte tot halte uit de woestijn van de Sinaï weg. Eerst in de woestijn Paran bleef de wolk rusten.
So we/the Israelis traveled from the Sinai Desert, and we/they continued traveling [north] until the cloud stopped in the Paran Desert.
13 Dit was de eerste keer, dat zij optrokken volgens Jahweh’s bevel, dat hun door Moses was meegedeeld.
That was the first time we/they moved, obeying the instructions that Yahweh had given to Moses/me to tell them.
14 Het eerst trok de banier van het leger der Judeërs op, naar hun afdelingen ingedeeld. Over hun eigen afdeling stond Naässon, de zoon van Amminadab;
The group that went first, carrying their flag/banner, was the group from the tribe of Judah. Nahshon, the son of Amminadab, was their leader.
15 over de afdeling van de stam der Issakarieten stond Netanel, de zoon van Soear;
The group from the tribe of Issachar [followed them]. Nethanel, the son of Zuar, was their leader.
16 over de afdeling van de stam der Zabulonieten stond Eliab, de zoon van Chelon.
The group from the tribe of Zebulun went next. Eliab, the son of Helon, was their leader.
17 Dan werd de tabernakel neergehaald, en braken de zonen van Gersjon en Merari op, die de tabernakel moesten dragen.
Then they dismantled the Sacred Tent, and the descendants of Gershon and Merari carried it, and they went next.
18 Daarna trok de banier van het leger der Rubenieten op, naar hun afdelingen ingedeeld. Over hun eigen afdeling stond Elisoer, de zoon van Sjedeoer;
The group from the tribe of Reuben went next, carrying their flag. Elizur, the son of Shedeur, was their leader.
19 over de afdeling van de stam der Simeonieten stond Sjeloemiël, de zoon van Soerisjaddai;
The group from the tribe of Simeon was next. Shelumiel, the son of Zurishaddai, was their leader.
20 over de afdeling van de stam der Gadieten stond Eljasaf, de zoon van Deoeël.
The group from the tribe of Gad was next. Eliasaph, the son of Deuel, was their leader.
21 Dan braken de zonen van Kehat op, die de heilige zaken moesten dragen. Als zij ergens aankwamen, had men de tabernakel weer opgericht.
The group descended from Kohath was next. They carried the sacred items from the Sacred Tent. The Sacred Tent itself was set up at the new location before they arrived there.
22 Vervolgens trok de banier van het leger der Efraïmieten op, naar hun afdelingen ingedeeld. Over hun eigen afdeling stond Elisjama, de zoon van Ammihoed;
The group from the tribe of Ephraim was next, carrying their flag. Elishama, the son of Ammihud, was their leader.
23 over de afdeling van de stam der Manassieten stond Gamliël, de zoon van Pedasoer;
The group from the tribe of Manasseh went next. Gamaliel, the son of Pedahzur, was their leader.
24 over de afdeling van de stam der Benjamieten stond Abidan, de zoon van Gidoni.
The group from the tribe of Benjamin, went next. Abidan, the son of Gideoni, was their leader.
25 Als achterhoede van alle legers trok de banier van het leger der Danieten op, naar hun afdelingen ingedeeld. Over hun eigen afdeling stond Achiézer, de zoon van Ammisjaddai.
The ones who went last were the group from the tribe of Dan, carrying their flag. Ahiezer, the son of Ammishaddai, was their leader.
26 Over de afdeling van de stam der Aserieten stond Pagiël, de zoon van Okran;
The group from the tribe of Asher went next. Pagiel, the son of Ocran, was their leader.
27 over de afdeling van de stam der Neftalieten stond Achira, de zoon van Enan.
The group from the tribe of Naphtali went last. Ahira, the son of Enan, was their leader.
28 Dit was de rangschikking der Israëlieten, ingedeeld naar hun afdelingen. Toen zij vertrokken,
That was the order in which the groups of Israeli tribes traveled.
29 sprak Moses tot zijn schoonvader Chobab, den zoon van Reoeël, den Midjaniet: Wij vertrekken naar de plaats, die Jahweh ons beloofd heeft te geven. Ga met ons mee, en wij zullen goed voor u zijn; want Jahweh heeft geluk beloofd aan Israël.
One day Moses/I said to his/my brother-in-law Hobab, the son of Reuel from the Midian people-group, “We are on the way to the place that Yahweh promised to give to us. Come with us, and we will take good care of you, because Yahweh has promised [to do] good things for us Israeli people.”
30 Maar hij gaf hem ten antwoord: Ik ga niet met u mee, maar ik vertrek naar mijn land en mijn geboortegrond.
But Hobab replied, “No, I will not go with you. I want to return to my own land and to my own family.”
31 Hij sprak: Verlaat ons toch niet; want gij kent de geschikte legerplaatsen voor ons in de woestijn, en gij kunt onze gids zijn.
But Moses/I said, “Please do not leave us. You know the places where we can set up our tents in this desert, and you can guide us.
32 Wanneer gij met ons meegaat, dan zullen wij ook u in de voorspoed doen delen, die Jahweh ons zal schenken.
Come with us. We will share with you all the good things that Yahweh gives to us.”
33 Zo trokken zij weg van de berg van Jahweh drie dagreizen ver. Want de ark van Jahweh’s Verbond ging drie dagen lang voor hen uit, om voor hen een rustplaats te zoeken;
[So Hobab agreed to go with them]. The Israelis left Sinai Mountain, [which they called] Yahweh’s Mountain, and they walked for three days. The [men carrying the] sacred chest went in front of the other people for those three days, and they kept looking for a place to set up their tents.
34 ook toen zij uit de legerplaats waren opgetrokken, bleef de wolk van Jahweh overdag boven hen.
The cloud sent by Yahweh was over them every day.
35 Als de ark dan optrok, sprak Moses: Rijs op, Jahweh, en uw vijanden stuiven uiteen, Die U haten vluchten weg voor uw aanschijn!
Each morning when the men who were carrying the sacred chest started to walk, Moses/I said, “Yahweh, arise! Scatter your enemies! Cause those who hate you to run away from you!”
36 En als zij stil hield, sprak hij: Zet U neder, o Jahweh Bij de duizend maal tienduizenden van Israël!
And each time the men [stopped to] set down the sacred chest, Moses/I said, “Yahweh, stay close to the thousands of us Israelis!”
