1 In de woestijn van de Sinaï sprak Jahweh tot Moses in de openbaringstent op de eerste dag van de tweede maand in het tweede jaar na hun uittocht uit Egypte:
Adonai spoke to Moses [Drawn out] in the wilderness of Sinai [Thorn], in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the second month (Iyar ·Light / I Am God your healer, 2·), in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt [Abode of slavery], saying,
2 Neemt het getal op van de hele gemeenschap der Israëlieten, naar hun geslachten en families, door alle mannelijke personen hoofd voor hoofd te tellen.
“Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel [God prevails], by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, every male, one by one;
3 Alle strijdbare mannen in Israël van twintig jaar af moet gij monsteren volgens hun legerkorpsen; gij en Aäron
from twenty years old and upward, all who are able to go out to war in Israel [God prevails]. You and Aaron [Light-bringer] shall count them by their divisions.
4 moeten het doen, en uit iedere stam moet één man, een familiehoofd, u helpen.
With you there shall be a man of every tribe; everyone head of his fathers’ house.
5 Hier volgen de namen van de mannen, die u ter zijde moeten staan: Voor Ruben Elisoer, de zoon van Sjedeoer;
These are the names of the men who shall stand with you: Of Reuben [See, a son!]: Elizur the son of Shedeur.
6 voor Simeon Sjeloemiël, de zoon van Soerisjaddai;
Of Simeon [Hearing]: Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai [My rock almighty].
7 voor Juda Naässon, de zoon van Amminadab;
Of Judah [Praised]: Nahshon the son of Amminadab.
8 voor Issakar Netanel, de zoon van Soear;
Of Issachar [Hire, Reward]: Nethanel the son of Zuar.
9 voor Zabulon Eliab, de zoon van Chelon.
Of Zebulun [Living together]: Eliab the son of Helon.
10 Voor de zonen van Josef, voor Efraïm Elisjama, de zoon van Ammihoed; voor Manasse Gamliël, de zoon van Pedasoer.
Of the children of Joseph [May he add]: Of Ephraim [Fruit]: Elishama the son of Ammihud. Of Manasseh [Causing to forget]: Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.
11 Voor Benjamin Abidan, de zoon van Gidoni;
Of Benjamin [Son of right hand, Son of south]: Abidan the son of Gideoni.
12 voor Dan Achiézer, de zoon van Ammisjaddai;
Of Dan [He judged]: Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.
13 voor Aser Pagiël, de zoon van Okran;
Of Asher [Happy]: Pagiel the son of Ochran.
14 voor Gad Eljasaf, de zoon van Deoeël;
Of Gad [Good fortune]: Eliasaph the son of Deuel.
15 voor Neftali Achira, de zoon van Enan.
Of Naphtali [My wrestling]: Ahira the son of Enan.”
16 Deze moeten uit de gemeenschap worden opgeroepen, als de vorsten van de stammen hunner vaderen en stamhoofden van Israël.
These are those who were called of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel [God prevails].
17 Moses en Aäron ontboden dus deze mannen, wier namen zijn opgegeven,
Moses [Drawn out] and Aaron [Light-bringer] took these men who are mentioned by name.
18 en riepen op de eerste van de tweede maand de hele gemeenschap bijeen. Zij werden naar hun geslachten en families opgetekend na hoofdelijke telling der personen, die twintig jaar oud waren en meer.
They assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month (Iyar ·Light / I Am God your healer, 2·); and they declared their ancestry by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, one by one.
19 Zo monsterde Moses hen in de woestijn van de Sinaï, zoals Jahweh het hem bevolen had.
As Adonai enjoined Moses [Drawn out], so he counted them in the wilderness of Sinai [Thorn].
20 De zonen, die van Ruben afstamden, Israëls eerstgeborene, werden naar hun geslachten en families, hoofd voor hoofd, met name geteld; het getal strijdbare mannen van twintig jaar af
The children of Reuben [See, a son!], Israel [God prevails]’s firstborn, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, one by one, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;
21 uit de stam van Ruben bedroeg in het geheel zes en veertig duizend vijfhonderd man.
those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Reuben [See, a son!], were forty-six thousand five hundred.
22 De zonen, die van Simeon afstamden, werden naar hun geslachten en families, hoofd voor hoofd, met name geteld; het getal strijdbare mannen van twintig jaar af
Of the children of Simeon [Hearing], their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, those who were counted of it, according to the number of the names, one by one, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;
23 uit de stam van Simeon bedroeg in het geheel negen en vijftig duizend driehonderd man.
those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Simeon [Hearing], were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
24 De zonen, die van Gad afstamden, werden naar hun geslachten en families, met name geteld; het getal strijdbare mannen van twintig jaar af
Of the children of Gad [Good fortune], their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;
25 uit de stam van Gad bedroeg in het geheel vijf en veertig duizend zes honderd vijftig man.
those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Gad [Good fortune], were forty-five thousand six hundred fifty.
26 De zonen, die van Juda afstamden, werden naar hun geslachten en families, met name geteld; het getal strijdbare mannen van twintig jaar af
Of the children of Judah [Praised], their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;
27 uit de stam van Juda bedroeg in het geheel vier en zeventig duizend zeshonderd man.
those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Judah [Praised], were seventy-four thousand six hundred.
28 De zonen, die van Issakar afstamden, werden naar hun geslachten en families, met name geteld; het getal strijdbare mannen van twintig jaar af
Of the children of Issachar [Hire, Reward], their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;
29 uit de stam van Issakar bedroeg in het geheel vier en vijftig duizend vierhonderd man.
those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Issachar [Hire, Reward], were fifty-four thousand four hundred.
30 De zonen, die van Zabulon afstamden, werden naar hun geslachten en families, met name geteld; het getal strijdbare mannen van twintig jaar af
Of the children of Zebulun [Living together], their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;
31 uit de stam van Zabulon bedroeg in het geheel zeven en vijftig duizend vierhonderd man.
those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Zebulun [Living together], were fifty-seven thousand four hundred.
32 De zonen van Josef, de zonen, die van Efraïm afstamden, werden naar hun geslachten en families, met name geteld; het getal strijdbare mannen van twintig jaar af
Of the children of Joseph [May he add], of the children of Ephraim [Fruit], their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;
33 uit de stam van Efraïm bedroeg in het geheel veertig duizend vijfhonderd man.
those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Ephraim [Fruit], were forty thousand five hundred.
34 De zonen, die van Manasse afstamden, werden naar hun geslachten en families, met name geteld; het getal strijdbare mannen van twintig jaar af
Of the children of Manasseh [Causing to forget], their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;
35 uit de stam van Manasse bedroeg in het geheel twee en dertig duizend tweehonderd man.
those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Manasseh [Causing to forget], were thirty-two thousand two hundred.
36 De zonen, die van Benjamin afstamden, werden naar hun geslachten en families, met name geteld; het getal strijdbare mannen van twintig jaar af
Of the children of Benjamin [Son of right hand, Son of south], their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;
37 uit de stam van Benjamin bedroeg in het geheel vijf en dertig duizend vierhonderd man.
those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Benjamin [Son of right hand, Son of south], were thirty-five thousand four hundred.
38 De zonen, die van Dan afstamden, werden naar hun geslachten en families, met name geteld; het getal strijdbare mannen van twintig jaar af
Of the children of Dan [He judged], their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;
39 uit de stam van Dan bedroeg in het geheel twee en zestig duizend zevenhonderd man.
those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Dan [He judged], were sixty-two thousand seven hundred.
40 De zonen, die van Aser afstamden, werden naar hun geslachten en families, met name geteld; het getal strijdbare mannen van twintig jaar af
Of the children of Asher [Happy], their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;
41 uit de stam van Aser bedroeg in het geheel een en veertig duizend vijfhonderd man.
those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Asher [Happy], were forty-one thousand five hundred.
42 De zonen, die van Neftali afstamden, werden naar hun geslachten en families, met name geteld; het getal strijdbare mannen van twintig jaar af
Of the children of Naphtali [My wrestling], their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;
43 uit de stam van Neftali bedroeg in het geheel drie en vijftig duizend vierhonderd man.
those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Naphtali [My wrestling], were fifty-three thousand four hundred.
44 Dit waren de mannen, die Moses en Aäron hadden gemonsterd tezamen met de twaalf vorsten van Israël, één uit elke stam, allen familiehoofden.
These are those who were counted, whom Moses [Drawn out] and Aaron [Light-bringer] counted, and the princes of Israel [God prevails], being twelve men: they were each one for his fathers’ house.
45 Het totaal der gemonsterden van de Israëlieten naar hun families, alle strijdbare mannen in Israël van twintig jaar af,
So all those who were counted of the children of Israel [God prevails] by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war in Israel [God prevails];
46 bedroeg zeshonderd drie duizend vijfhonderd vijftig man.
even all those who were counted were six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty.
47 Maar de stam der Levieten werd niet met hen op de lijst geplaatst.
But the Levites [Descendants of United with] after the tribe of their fathers was not counted among them.
48 Want Jahweh had tot Moses gezegd:
For Adonai spoke to Moses [Drawn out], saying,
49 De stam van Levi moet ge niet monsteren en hun getal niet bij de andere Israëlieten opnemen.
“Only the tribe of Levi [United with] you shall not count, neither shall you take a census of them among the children of Israel [God prevails];
50 De Levieten moet ge belasten met de zorg voor de tabernakel van het Verbond, voor al zijn benodigdheden en alles, wat er toe behoort. Zij moeten de tabernakel dragen en bedienen met alles, wat er toe behoort, en zich dus rond de tabernakel legeren.
but appoint the Levites [Descendants of United with] over the Tabernacle of the Testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle, and all its furnishings; and they shall take care of it, and shall encamp around it.
51 Wanneer de tabernakel op moet trekken, moeten de Levieten hem afbreken, en wanneer de tabernakel stil houdt, moeten de Levieten hem oprichten; zo een onbevoegde nadert, moet hij worden gedood.
When the tabernacle is to move, the Levites [Descendants of United with] shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites [Descendants of United with] shall set it up. The stranger who comes near shall be put to death.
52 En terwijl de Israëlieten zich volgens hun legerafdelingen in hun kampement en onder hun eigen banier moeten legeren,
The children of Israel [God prevails] shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their divisions.
53 moeten de Levieten zich rond de tabernakel van het Verbond legeren, om de gramschap van God niet te doen losbarsten tegen de gemeenschap van Israëls kinderen; de Levieten moeten dus de dienst van de tabernakel van het Verbond verrichten.
But the Levites [Descendants of United with] shall encamp around the Tabernacle of the Testimony, that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel [God prevails]: and the Levites [Descendants of United with] shall be responsible for the Tabernacle of the Testimony.”
54 De Israëlieten volbrachten alles nauwkeurig, wat Jahweh Moses bevolen had.
Thus the children of Israel [God prevails] did. According to all that Adonai enjoined Moses [Drawn out], so they did.
