Richteren 3
1 Dit zijn de volken, die Jahweh met rust liet, om door hen de Israëlieten, die nog geen der oorlogen van Kanaän hadden leren kennen, op de proef te stellen,
These ben the folkis whiche the Lord lefte, that in hem he schulde teche Israel, and alle men that knewen not the batels of Cananeis;
2 en om aan de geslachten der Israëlieten de strijd te leren, voor zover ze die tevoren niet kenden.
and that aftirward `the sones of hem schulden lerne to fiyte with enemyes,
3 Het waren de vijf vorsten der Filistijnen, al de Kanaänieten, de Sidoniërs, en de Chittieten, die het Libanon-gebergte bewonen van de berg Hermon af tot bij Chamat.
and to haue custom of batel He lefte fyue princes of Filistees, and al Cananei, and the puple of Sidon, and Euey that dwelliden in the hil Liban, fro the hil Baal Hermon `til to the entryng of Emath.
4 Ze dienden dus, om Israël te beproeven, ten einde te weten, of zij Jahweh’s voorschriften, die Hij hun vaders door Moses gegeven had, zouden opvolgen.
And he lefte hem, that in hem he schulde asaie Israel, whethir thei wolden here the `heestis of the Lord, whiche he comaundide to her fadris bi the hond of Moises, ethir nai.
5 Maar toen de Israëlieten midden tussen de Kanaänieten, Chittieten, Amorieten, Perizzieten, Chiwwieten en Jeboesieten woonden,
And so the sones of Israel dwelliden in the myddis of Cananei, of Ethei, and of Ammorrei, and of Feresei, and of Euey,
6 namen ze zich hun dochters tot vrouw, gaven hun eigen dochters aan hun zonen, en dienden hun goden.
and of Jebusey, and weddiden wyues, the douytris of hem; and the sones of Israel yauen her douytris to `the sones of hem, and serueden `the goddis of hem.
7 Toen dus de Israëlieten kwaad deden in de ogen van Jahweh, den God hunner vaderen vergaten, en de Báals en Asjera’s vereerden,
And the sones of Israel diden yuel in the `siyt of the Lord, and foryaten her Lord God, and serueden Baalym, and Astaroth.
8 werd Jahweh op Israël vertoornd, en leverde Hij het in de macht van Koesjan-Risjatáim, den koning van Edom; en de Israëlieten dienden Koesjan-Risjatáim acht jaar lang.
And the Lord was wrooth ayens Israel, and bitook hem in to the hondis of Cusanrasathaym, kyng of Mesopotanye, and thei serueden hym eiyte yeer.
9 Maar zodra de Israëlieten tot Jahweh riepen, deed Jahweh een redder opstaan om hen te bevrijden, namelijk Otniël, den zoon van Kenaz, den jongeren broer van Kaleb.
And thei crieden to the Lord, and he reiside to hem a sauyour, and delyuerede hem, that is, Othonyel, sone of Ceneth, `the lesse brothir of Caleph.
10 De geest van Jahweh rustte op hem, en hij was rechter over Israël. En toen hij ten strijde trok, leverde Jahweh Koesjan-Risjatáim, den koning van Edom, in zijn hand, zodat hij Koesjan-Risjatáim overwon.
And the spirit of the Lord was in hym, and he demyde Israel. And he yede out to batel, and the Lord bitook in to hise hondis Cusanrathaym, kyng of Sirie; and Othonyel oppresside hym.
11 Gedurende veertig jaar genoot het land nu rust. Na de dood van Otniël
And the lond restide fourti yeer; and Othonyel, sone of Ceneth, diede.
12 deden de Israëlieten opnieuw kwaad in de ogen van Jahweh. Daarom maakte Jahweh Eglon, den koning van Moab, sterk tegen Israël, omdat ze kwaad hadden gedaan in de ogen van Jahweh.
Forsothe the sones of Israel addiden to do yuel in the `siyt of the Lord; and he coumfortide ayens hem Eglon, the kyng of Moab, for `thei diden yuel in the `siyt of the Lord.
13 Deze verenigde zich met de Ammonieten en Amalekieten, trok op, versloeg Israël, en nam bezit van de Palmenstad.
And the Lord couplide to hym the sones of Amon and Amalech; and he yede, and smoot Israel, and hadde in possessioun the citee of Palmes.
14 En achttien jaar lang dienden de Israëlieten Eglon, den koning van Moab.
And the sones of Israel serueden Eglon, kyng of Moab, eiytene yeer.
15 Maar toen de Israëlieten weer tot Jahweh riepen, verwekte Jahweh hun een redder, Ehoed, den zoon van Gera, een Benjamiet, die links was. Toen de Israëlieten hem eens de schatting naar Eglon, den koning van Moab, lieten brengen,
And aftirward thei crieden to the Lord; and he reiside to hem a sauyour, Aioth bi name, the sone of Gera, sone of Gemyny, which Aioth vside euer either hond for the riyt hond. And the sones of Israel senten bi him yiftis, `that is, tribute, to Eglon, kyng of Moab;
16 maakte Ehoed zich een tweesnijdend zwaard van één span lengte, en gordde het onder zijn mantel aan zijn rechterheup.
which Aioth made to hym a swerd keruynge on euer either side, hauynge in the myddis a pomel of the lengthe of the pawm of an hond; and he was gird therwith vndir `the sai, `that is, a knyytis mentil, `in the riyt hipe.
17 Zo bracht hij de schatting naar Eglon, den koning van Moab. Deze Eglon was een buitengewoon zwaarlijvig man.
And he brouyte yiftis to Eglon, the kyng of Moab; forsothe Eglon was ful fat.
18 Na de schatting te hebben aangeboden, zond hij de mannen, die de schatting gedragen hadden, heen,
And whanne he hadde youe yiftis to the kyng, he pursuede felowis that camen with hym; and he turnede ayen fro Galgalis,
19 maar hij zelf keerde bij de afgodsbeelden in de buurt van Gilgal weer om, en zeide: Koning, ik moet u een geheim meedelen. De koning beval stilte, en liet allen, die bij hem waren, vertrekken.
where idolis weren, and he seide to the kyng, A kyng, Y haue a priuei word to thee. And he comaundide silence. And whanne alle men weren goon out, that weren aboute hym, Aioth entride to hym;
20 Toen nu Ehoed bij hem kwam, zat hij alleen in de koele opperzaal. En Ehoed sprak: Ik heb een godsspraak voor u. Terwijl Eglon van zijn zetel opstond,
forsothe he sat aloone in a somer parlour. And Aioth seide, Y haue the word of God to thee.
21 stak Ehoed zijn linkerhand uit, trok het zwaard van zijn rechterheup en stiet het hem in de buik,
Which roos anoon fro the trone. And Aioth helde forth the left hond, and took the swerd fro his riyt hype; and he
22 zodat zelfs het heft er met het lemmet in drong, en het vet zich om het lemmet sloot; want hij trok het zwaard niet uit zijn buik.

23 Hij klom nu door het venster en ging langs de galerij heen, nadat hij de deur van de opperzaal achter zich gesloten en gegrendeld had.
Forsothe whanne the doris of the parlour weren closid moost diligentli, and fastned with lok,
24 Toen hij vertrokken was, kwamen de dienaren terug, maar zagen, dat de deur van de opperzaal gegrendeld was. Ze dachten: Hij doet zeker zijn behoefte in het gemak.
Aioth yede out bi a posterne. And the `seruauntis of the king entriden, not in the parlour, but in the porche, and thei sien the doris of the parlour closid, and seiden, In hap he purgith the wombe in the somer parlour.
25 Ze bleven dus wachten, tot ze er verlegen mee werden. En toen hij de deur van de opperzaal maar niet opende, haalden ze de sleutel en deden open; en daar lag hun heer dood op de grond.
And thei abididen longe, til thei weren aschamed; and thei sien that no man openede, and thei token the keie, and thei openyden, and founden her lord liggynge deed in the erthe.
26 Maar door hun talmen was Ehoed ontkomen; hij ging de afgodsbeelden voorbij, en stelde zich te Seïra in veiligheid.
Sotheli while thei weren disturblid, Aioth fledde out, and passide the place of idols, fro whennus he turnede ayen; and he cam in to Seirath.
27 Zodra hij in het land van Israël was aangekomen, stak hij de bazuin in het bergland van Efraïm, en de Israëlieten daalden met hem het gebergte af. Hij stelde zich aan hun spits,
And anoon he sownede with a clarioun in the hil of Effraym; and the sones of Israel camen doun with hym, and he yede in the frount.
28 en sprak hun toe: Volgt mij; want Jahweh heeft de Moabieten, uw vijanden, in uw hand geleverd. Ze volgden hem dan, sneden Moab de doorwaadbare plaatsen van de Jordaan af, en lieten er niemand overtrekken.
Which seide to hem, Sue ye me, for the Lord hath bitake oure enemyes, Moabitis, in to oure hondis. And thei camen doun after hym, and ocupieden the forthis of Jordan, that ledde ouer in to Moab.
29 In die tijd sloegen ze ongeveer tien duizend Moabieten neer, allemaal sterke en dappere mannen, en niemand ontkwam.
And thei suffriden not ony man to passe, but thei smytiden Moabitis in that tyme aboute ten thousande, alle myyti men and stronge; no man of hem myyte ascape.
30 Zo werd Moab in die dagen door Israël vernederd; en het land genoot rust voor tachtig jaar.
And Moab was maad low in that dai vndur the hond of Israel, and the lond restide fourescoor yeer.
31 Na hem trad nog Sjamgar op, de zoon van Anat, die zes honderd Filistijnen versloeg met een ossendrijversstok; ook hij redde Israël.
Aftir hym was Samgar, the sone of Anath, that smoot of Filisteis sixe hundrid men with a schar; and he also defendide Israel.
