1 Na Josuë’s dood raadpleegden de Israëlieten Jahweh en vroegen: Wie van ons zal het eerst tegen de Kanaänieten ten strijde trekken?
And it was after [the] death of Joshua and they enquired [the] people of Israel by Yahweh saying who? will he go up for us against the Canaanite[s] at the first to engage in battle against him.
2 Jahweh sprak: Juda zal optrekken; zie, Ik lever hem het land over.
And he said Yahweh Judah he will go up here! I have given the land in hand his.
3 Daarom sprak Juda tot zijn broeder Simeon: Trek met mij op naar mijn erfdeel, en laat ons samen tegen de Kanaänieten strijden; dan zal ook ik met u naar uw erfdeel gaan. En Simeon trok met hem mee.
And he said Judah to Simeon brother his come up with me in lot my so let us fight against the Canaanite[s] and I will go also I with you in lot your and he went with him Simeon.
4 Toen Juda dan uitrukte, leverde Jahweh de Kanaänieten en Perizzieten in hun handen, zodat ze er te Bézek tien duizend versloegen.
And he went up Judah and he gave Yahweh the Canaanite[s] and the Perizzite[s] in hand their and they defeated them at Bezek ten thousand man.

7 En Adoni-Bézek zeide: Zeventig koningen met afgehouwen duimen en grote tenen raapten de afval van mijn tafel bijeen; naar mijn werken heeft God me vergolden. Men bracht hem naar Jerusalem, waar hij stierf.
And he said Adoni-Bezek seventy - kings [the] thumbs of hands their and feet their cut off they were gathering up under table my just as I have done so he has repaid to me God and they brought him Jerusalem and he died there.
8 De mannen van Juda belegerden Jerusalem en namen het in, waarna ze de stad met het zwaard uitmoordden en in brand staken.
And they fought [the] descendants of Judah against Jerusalem and they captured it and they struck it to [the] mouth of [the] sword and the city they sent in fire.
9 Daarna zakten de Judeërs af, om de Kanaänieten te bestrijden, die in het bergland, de Négeb en de Sjefela verblijf hielden.
And after they went down [the] descendants of Judah to fight against the Canaanite[s] [who] dwelt of the hill country and the Negev and the Shephelah.
10 Zo trok Juda tegen de Kanaänieten op, die te Hebron woonden; Hebron werd vroeger Kirjat-Arba genoemd. En hij versloeg Sjesjai, Achiman en Talmai.
And he went Judah against the Canaanite[s] who dwelt in Hebron and [the] name of Hebron before [was] Kiriath Arba and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.
11 Vandaar trok hij op tegen de bevolking van Debir; Debir werd vroeger Kirjat-Séfer genoemd.
And he went from there against [the] inhabitants of Debir and [the] name of Debir before [was] Kiriath Sepher.
12 Toen zei Kaleb: Wie Kirjat-Séfer aanvalt en inneemt, geef ik mijn dochter Aksa tot vrouw.

And he captured it Othniel [the] son of Kenaz [the] brother of Caleb young more than him and he gave to him Achsah daughter his to a wife.
14 Maar toen zij aankwam, spoorde hij haar aan, haar vader akkerland te vragen. Ze boog zich dus van den ezel neer, zodat Kaleb haar vroeg: Wat is er?
And it was when came she and she incited him to ask from with father her the field and she went down from on the donkey and he said to her Caleb what? [is] to you.
15 Ze zeide hem: Schenk me een gift; nu ge mij eenmaal voor de Négeb bestemd hebt, moet ge me ook waterbronnen geven. En Kaleb gaf haar bronnen in het hoogland en laagland.
And she said to him give! to me a blessing for [the] land of the Negev you have given to me and you will give to me springs of water and he gave to her Caleb springs upper and springs lower.
16 Tezamen met de Judeërs trokken ook de nakomelingen van Chobab, den Keniet, Moses schoonvader, uit de Palmenstad naar de woestijn van Juda, waar men afdaalt naar Arad, en vestigden zich bij de Amalekieten.
And [the] descendants of [the] Kenite [the] father-in-law of Moses they went up from [the] city of the palm trees with [the] descendants of Judah [the] wilderness of Judah which [is] in [the] Negev Arad and he went and he dwelt with the people.
17 Daarna trok Juda met zijn broeder Simeon op, en zij versloegen de Kanaänieten, die te Sefat woonden; ze troffen de stad met de banvloek, en men noemde ze Chorma.
And he went Judah with Simeon brother his and they attacked the Canaanite[s] [who] dwelt of Zephath and they totally destroyed it and he called [the] name of the city Hormah.
18 Maar Juda kwam niet in het bezit van Gaza, Asjkelon en Ekron met bijbehorend gebied.
And he captured Judah Gaza and territory its and Ashkelon and territory its and Ekron and territory its.
19 Juda maakte zich wel van het bergland meester, omdat Jahweh met hem was, maar de bewoners der vlakte konden ze niet verdrijven, want die hadden ijzeren wagens.
And he was Yahweh (with *L(abh)*) Judah and it took possession of the hill country for not to dispossess [the] inhabitants of the valley for chariotry of iron [belonged] to them.
20 Zoals Moses bepaald had, gaf men Hebron aan Kaleb, die er de drie Anaks-kinderen uit verdreef.
And people gave to Caleb Hebron just as he had said Moses and he dispossessed from there three [the] sons of Anak.

22 Het huis van Josef trok op, en wel naar Betel; en Jahweh was met hen.
And they went up [the] house of Joseph also they Beth-el and Yahweh [was] with them.
23 Toen nu het huis van Josef Betel, dat vroeger Loez heette, liet bespieden,
And they caused to spy out [the] house of Joseph at Beth-el and [the] name of the city before [was] Luz.
24 zagen de spionnen een man uit de stad komen. Ze zeiden hem: Wijs ons, hoe we in de stad kunnen komen; dan zullen we u sparen.
And they saw those [who] watched a man coming out from the city and they said to him show us please [the] entrance of the city and we will do with you loyalty.
25 En hij wees hun, waar ze de stad moesten binnengaan. Daarop joegen ze de stad over de kling, maar dien man en zijn hele familie lieten ze gaan.
And he showed them [the] entrance of the city and they struck the city to [the] mouth of [the] sword and the man and all family his they let go.
26 De man vertrok naar het land der Chittieten, en bouwde er een stad, die hij Loez noemde, zoals ze nu nog heet.
And he went the man [the] land of the Hittites and he built a city and he called name its Luz that [is] name its until the day this.
27 Maar ook Manasse veroverde Bet-Sjean en Taänak met hun dorpen niet, en verdreef evenmin de bewoners van Dor, Jibleam, Megiddo en hun dorpen, zodat de Kanaänieten zich handhaafden in deze streek.

And it was that it became strong Israel and it made the Canaanite[s] into forced labor and certainly not it dispossessed him.
29 Ook Efraïm verjoeg de kanaänietische bevolking van Gézer niet; vandaar dat de Kanaänieten midden onder hen bleven wonen.
And Ephraim not it dispossessed the Canaanite[s] who dwelt in Gezer and it dwelt the Canaanite[s] in midst its in Gezer.
30 Ook Zabulon verdreef noch de bewoners van Kitron, noch die van Nahalol; de Kanaänieten leefden dus te midden van de Zabulonieten, maar waren dienstplichtig.
Zebulun not it dispossessed [the] inhabitants of Kitron and [the] inhabitants of Nahalol and it dwelt the Canaanite[s] in midst its and they became forced labor.
31 Aser verjoeg de inwoners van Akko, Sidon, Achlab, Akzib, Chelba, Afek en Rechob niet,
Asher not it dispossessed [the] inhabitants of Acco and [the] inhabitants of Sidon and Ahlab and Aczib and Helbah and Aphek and Rehob.
32 zodat de Aserieten midden tussen de Kanaänieten, de landsbevolking, woonden; want verdrijven konden ze die niet.
And it dwelt the Asherite[s] in [the] midst of the Canaanite[s] [the] inhabitants of the land for not it dispossessed it.
33 Neftali verjoeg de bevolking van Bet-Sjémesj en die van Bet-Anat niet, maar leefde te midden der Kanaänieten, die in deze streek woonden; de bevolking van Bet-Sjémesj en Bet-Anat was hun echter dienstbaar.
Naphtali not it dispossessed [the] inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and [the] inhabitants of Beth Anath and it dwelt in [the] midst of the Canaanite[s] [the] inhabitants of the land and [the] inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath they became for them forced labor.
34 De Amorieten drongen de Danieten het bergland in en zorgden ervoor, dat ze niet naar beneden kwamen in de vlakte.
And they pressed the Amorite[s] [the] descendants of Dan the hill country towards for not it permitted it to go down to the valley.
35 Vandaar dat de Amorieten zich handhaafden te Har-Chéres, Ajjalon, en Sjaälbim; maar het huis van Josef kreeg de overhand over hen, zodat ze dienstplichtig werden.
And it was determined the Amorite[s] to dwell in [the] mountain of Heres in Aijalon and in Shaalbim and it was heavy [the] hand of [the] house of Joseph and they became forced labor.
36 Het gebied der Edomieten strekte zich uit van het hoge Akrabbim, vanaf Séla en nog verder.
And [the] border of the Amorite[s] [was] from [the] ascent of scorpions from Sela and up-wards.
