Job 37
1 Ja, hierover siddert mijn hart, En springt op van zijn plaats.
“At this my heart also pounds and leaps from its place.
2 Hoort, hoort het bulderen van zijn stem, Het gebrom, dat komt uit zijn mond.
Listen closely to the thunder of His voice and the rumbling that comes from His mouth.
3 Langs heel de hemel slingert Hij zijn bliksem, En tot de grenzen der aarde.
He unleashes His lightning beneath the whole sky and sends it to the ends of the earth.
4 Zijn stem gromt achter Hem aan, Hij dondert met zijn machtige kreet; Hij houdt de bliksem niet terug, Wanneer zijn stem zich laat horen.
Then there comes a roaring sound; He thunders with His majestic voice. He does not restrain the lightning when His voice resounds.
5 Maar ook wonderen wrocht God door zijn stem, Doet grote, onbegrijpelijke dingen!
God thunders wondrously with His voice; He does great things we cannot comprehend.
6 Hij spreekt tot de sneeuw: Val op aarde neer; Tot de regenstromen: Weest hevig!
For He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and to the gentle rain, ‘Pour out a mighty downpour.’
7 Dan sluit Hij alle mensen op, Opdat ieder sterveling zijn werk erkent;
He seals up the hand of every man, so that all men may know His work.
8 Ook de dieren zoeken hun schuilplaats op, En leggen zich neer in hun holen.
The wild animals enter their lairs; they settle down in their dens.
9 Uit zijn kamer komt de wervelwind, Uit zijn voorraadschuren de koude;
The tempest comes from its chamber, and the cold from the driving north winds.
10 Door de adem Gods wordt het ijs gestolten, De watervlakte in boeien gelegd;
By the breath of God the ice is formed and the watery expanses are frozen.
11 Het zwerk belaadt Hij met dampen, En spreidt zijn lichtende wolken uit.
He loads the clouds with moisture; He scatters His lightning through them.
12 Ze zweven naar alle kanten rond, En gaan, zoals Hij het beschikt, Om te volbrengen, wat Hij hun gebiedt, Op de oppervlakte der aarde:
They swirl about, whirling at His direction, accomplishing all that He commands over the face of all the earth.
13 Is het tot straf, ze volbrengen zijn wil; Is het tot zegen, ze voeren hem uit.
Whether for punishment or for His land, He accomplishes this in His loving devotion.
14 Job, schenk er uw aandacht aan, Houd op, en let op Gods wonderen!
Listen to this, O Job; stand still and consider the wonders of God.
15 Begrijpt ge, hoe God ze gebiedt, En het licht van zijn wolken doet flitsen;
Do you know how God dispatches the clouds or makes the lightning flash?
16 Begrijpt ge iets van het zweven der wolken, Van de wonderwerken van den Alwetende?
Do you understand how the clouds float, those wonders of Him who is perfect in knowledge?
17 Gij, wiens kleren te warm zijn, Als de aarde amechtig van de zuidenwind ligt:
You whose clothes get hot when the land lies hushed under the south wind,
18 Kunt gij, evenals Hij, het zwerk tot een uitspansel strijken, Vast als een spiegel van gegoten metaal?
can you, like Him, spread out the skies to reflect the heat like a mirror of bronze?
19 Laat mij weten, wat wij Hem zullen zeggen, Wij, die door de duisternis hulpeloos staan!
Teach us what we should say to Him; we cannot draw up our case when our faces are in darkness.
20 Zal deze wijken wanneer ik het zeg; Worden weggevaagd, als de mens het beveelt?
Should He be told that I want to speak? Would a man ask to be swallowed up?
21 Neen, thans aanschouwt men geen licht, Het is door de wolken verduisterd; Maar een wind steekt op, en bezemt ze weg:
Now no one can gaze at the sun when it is bright in the skies after the wind has swept them clean.
22 En uit het Noorden breekt de goudglans door! God is van ontzagwekkende luister omringd:
Out of the north He comes in golden splendor; awesome majesty surrounds Him.
23 Wij dringen dus niet tot den Almachtige door! Hij is groot in kracht en gerechtigheid; Hij is de Heer van het recht, die nimmer verdrukt!
The Almighty is beyond our reach; He is exalted in power! In His justice and great righteousness He does not oppress.
24 Daarom moeten de mensen Hem vrezen, Doorgronden Hem al de wijzen niet!
Therefore, men fear Him, for He is not partial to the wise in heart.”
