Job 36
1 Vierde rede: mag de mens God ter verantwoording roepen? Elihoe vervolgde, en sprak:
Then continued Elihu, and said,
2 Heb nog een weinig geduld, en ik zal u onderrichten, Want er valt nog genoeg ten gunste van de Godheid te zeggen;
Wait for me a little, and I will instruct thee; for [I have] still some words on God's behalf.
3 Ik wil mijn kennis tot het uiterste voeren, Om mijn Schepper te rechtvaardigen.
I will lift up my knowledge for him who is afar, and for my Maker will I obtain righteousness.
4 Neen, mijn woorden liegen niet: Ge hebt met iemand te doen, die het eerlijk meent.
For truly no falsehood is [in] my words: one that is upright in [his] opinions [dealeth now] with thee.
5 Ja, God is groot: Hij veracht den rechtschapene niet;
Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength of intellect.
6 Machtig: Hij laat den boze niet leven! Hij verschaft aan de verdrukten hun recht,
He permitteth not the wicked to live; but he procureth justice for the afflicted.
7 Van de rechtvaardigen wendt Hij zijn ogen niet af; Hij zet ze bij koningen op de troon, Hoog plaatst Hij hun zetel voor eeuwig!
He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous; but [he placeth them] with kings on the throne; yea, he doth establish them for ever, and they are exalted.
8 Maar worden zij in boeien geklonken, In koorden van ellende gevangen,
And if they be bound in fetters, and if they be entangled in the cords of affliction:
9 Dan brengt Hij hun daardoor hun gedrag onder het oog, En hun zonden uit hoogmoed ontstaan;
Then doth he tell them of their work, and of their transgressions, when they had become strong.
10 Zo opent Hij hun oor ter belering, En vermaant ze, zich van hun ongerechtigheid te bekeren.
And he openeth thus their ear to correction, and saith that they should return from wrong-doing.
11 Wanneer ze dan luisteren, en Hem weer dienen, Dan slijten ze hun dagen in geluk, Hun jaren in weelde;
If they hearken and serve [him], they will spend their days in happiness, and their years in pleasures.
12 Maar wanneer ze niet willen horen, Dan gaan ze heen naar het graf, En komen om door onverstand.
But if they hearken not, they will pass away through the sword, and they will perish in want of knowledge.
13 En de verstokten, die er toornig om worden, En niet smeken, als Hij ze bindt:
But the hypocrites in heart persevere in wrath; they will not offer entreaty when he bindeth them:
14 Zij sterven al in hun jeugd, Hun leven vliedt heen in de jonge jaren.
Their soul will die in youth, and their life, among the incestuous.
15 Hij redt dus den ellendige door zijn ellende, En opent zijn oor door zijn nood!
He delivereth the afflicted through his affliction, and openeth through oppression his ear.
16 Zo trekt Hij ook u uit de muil van ellende Inplaats daarvan zal het onbekrompen overvloed zijn, En het genot van een dis, met vette spijzen beladen.
And also thee hath he incited away from the jaws of distress into a wide space, on the site of which there is no straitness; and what is set on thy table is full of fatness.
17 Maar oordeelt gij geheel als een boze zijn gericht zal u treffen,
But if thou art full of the judgment of the wicked: [divine] judgment and decree will support each other.
18 Pas dus op, dat de wrevel u geen straf komt brengen, Waarvan de grootste losprijs u niet zou ontslaan;
For there would be fury, If aught were to incite thee to utter an abundance [of rebellious words]; and the greatness of the infliction must not mislead thee.
19 Uw smeken tot Hem in de nood niets bereiken Al doet ge het ook uit al uw kracht.
Will he esteem thy riches? no, not gold ore, nor all the highest forces of strength.
20 Laat de dwaasheid u toch niet bedriegen Om u te verheffen met hen, die wijs willen zijn;
Desire then not eagerly the night, when nations pass away in their place.
21 Wacht u ervoor, u tot de zonde te wenden, Want hierdoor juist werdt gij door ellende bezocht!
Take heed, turn not thyself to wrong-doing, so that thou wouldst choose this because of [thy] affliction.
22 Zie, God is groot door zijn kracht: Wie is heerser als Hij?
Behold, God is exalted by his power: who is an instructer like him?
23 Wie schrijft Hem zijn weg voor, Wie zegt: Gij handelt verkeerd?
Who hath given him a charge concerning his way? or who hath ever said, Thou hast acted unjustly?
24 Denk er aan, dat ook gij zijn daden verheft, Die de stervelingen moeten bezingen,
Reflect, that thou shouldst magnify his work, which [other] men have beheld.
25 Die iedere mens moet overwegen, Ieder mensenkind van verre beschouwt.
All men have looked at it [with astonishment]; the mortal gazeth at it from afar.
26 Zie, God is groot: wij begrijpen Hem niet, Het getal van zijn jaren is zelfs niet te schatten!
Behold, God is great, and we comprehend him not, the number of his years can truly not be searched out.
27 Hij trekt uit de zee de druppels omhoog, Vervluchtigt de regen tot zijn nevel,
For he taketh away drops of water, which are purified into rain in his mist:
28 Die de wolken naar beneden doet stromen, En op alle mensen doet storten;
These drop down out of the skies; they distil upon the multitude of men.
29 Wie begrijpt de sprei van de wolken En de gedaante van zijn tent?
But [what man] can understand the outspreadings of the clouds? the tumult of his tabernacle?
30 Zie, Hij spreidt zijn nevel uit over de zee, En houdt haar kolken bedekt.
Behold, he spreadeth out over it his light, and covereth up the roots of the sea.
31 Want daarmee spijst Hij de volken En geeft Hij voedsel in overvloed.
For by means of them he judgeth nations, he giveth food in superfluity.
32 In zijn handen verbergt Hij de bliksem, En zendt hem af op zijn doel;
[His] hands he covereth with light; and he commandeth it to strike the one who striveth against him.
33 Zijn strijdkreet kondigt Hem aan, Zijn woede ontketent de storm!
The noise of his storm telleth of it, yea, the cattle also, of the rising tempest.
