Jakobus 4
1 Vanwaar dan strijd en getwist onder u? Komt het niet voort uit uw lusten, die door uw ledematen aan het vechten slaan?
Wherof ben batelis and cheestis among you? Whether not of youre coueitisis, that fiyten in youre membris?
2 Gij begeert, toch bezit gij niet; gij moordt en benijdt, toch verkrijgt gij niet. Gij blijft dus vechten en strijden! Gij bezit echter niet, omdat gij niet bidt;
Ye coueiten, and ye han not; ye sleen, and ye han enuye, and ye moun not gete. Ye chiden, and maken batel; and ye han not, for ye axen not.
3 gij bidt en toch verkrijgt gij niet, omdat gij bidt met de boze bedoeling, door uw lusten te verbrassen wat gij verkrijgt.
Ye axen, and ye resseyuen not; for that ye axen yuele, as ye schewen opynli in youre coueitisis.
4 Overspelers, weet gij dan niet, dat vriendschap der wereld vijandschap is jegens God? Wie dus een vriend van de wereld wil zijn, maakt zich tot vijand van God.
Auowtreris, witen not ye, that the frenschip of this world is enemye to God? Therfor who euere wole be frend of this world, is maad the enemye of God.
5 Of meent gij soms, dat de Schrift het voor niets zegt: "Tot afgunst toe begeert de Geest, dien Hij in ons deed wonen?"
Whether ye gessen, that the scripture seith veynli, The spirit that dwellith in you, coueitith to enuye?
6 Groter genade geeft Hij zelfs; daarom zegt ze: "God weerstaat de hovaardigen, maar aan de nederigen geeft Hij genade."
But he yyueth the more grace; for which thing he seith, God withstondith proude men, but to meke men he yyueth grace.
7 Onderwerpt u dus nederig aan God, maar verzet u tegen den duivel, en hij zal voor u vluchten!
Therfor be ye suget to God; but withstonde ye the deuel, and he schal fle fro you.
8 Treedt nader tot God, en Hij zal naderen tot u! Zondaars, reinigt uw handen; dubbelhartigen, zuivert uw harten!
Neiye ye to God, and he schal neiye to you. Ye synneris, clense ye hondis, and ye double in soule, purge ye the hertis.
9 Beseft uw ellende, jammert en weent; uw lachen verkere in rouw, en uw vreugde in droefheid!
Be ye wretchis, and weile ye; youre leiyyng be turned in to weping, and ioye in to sorewe of herte.
10 Vernedert u voor den Heer, en Hij zal u verheffen.
Be ye mekid in the siyt of the Lord, and he schal enhaunse you.
11 Broeders, spreekt geen kwaad van elkander! Wie kwaad spreekt van zijn broeder, of den broeder beoordeelt, spreekt kwaad van de wet en oordeelt de wet; maar zo ge haar oordeelt, zijt ge geen werker der wet, maar haar rechter.
My britheren, nyle ye bacbite ech othere. He that bacbitith his brothir, ethir that demeth his brothir, bacbitith the lawe, and demeth the lawe. And if thou demest the lawe, thou art not a doere of the lawe, but a domesman.
12 Wetgever en Rechter is Eén: Hij die redden kan en verderven. Maar wie zijt gij, dat ge den naaste beoordeelt?
But oon is makere of the lawe, and iuge, that may lese, and delyuere.
13 En nu gij daar, die zegt: "Vandaag of morgen zullen we heenreizen naar die of die stad; een jaar zullen we daar blijven, handel drijven en winst maken."
And who art thou, that demest thi neiybore? Lo! now ye, that seien, To dai ethir to morewe we schulen go in to thilke citee, and there we schulen dwelle a yeer, and we schulen make marchaundise, and we schulen make wynning;
14 Gij daar, die niet eens de dag van morgen kent! Wat is uw leven? Een damp immers zijt gij, die een stonde opkomt en dan weer verdwijnt.
whiche witen not, what is to you in the morewe.
15 Neen, gij moest zeggen: "Zo de Heer het wil, zullen we leven, en dit doen of dat!"
For what is youre lijf? A smoke apperinge at a litil, and aftirward it schal be wastid. Therfor that ye seie, If the Lord wole, and if we liuen, we schulen do this thing, ether that thing.
16 Maar nu bluft gij in uw verwaandheid; al dergelijk gebluf is verkeerd.
And now ye maken ful out ioye in youre pridis; euery siche ioye is wickyd.
17 Nu dan, hij die weet, dat hij goed heeft te doen en het nalaat, doet zonde.
Therfor it is synne to hym, that kan do good, and doith not.
