Hosea 4

1 Hoort het woord van Jahweh, Israëls kinderen: Jahweh heeft een aanklacht Tegen de bewoners van het land! Want er is geen trouw meer, geen liefde, Geen kennis van God in het land;

Hear the word of Yahweh, ye sons of Israel, —that, a controversy, hath Yahweh with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no faithfulness, nor lovingkindness, nor knowledge of God, in the land:

2 Zweren en liegen, moorden, stelen en echtbreuk plegen, Het éne bloedbad volgt op het andere.

Cursing and lying, and killing and stealing, and committing adultery, have broken forth, and, blood-shedding, unto blood-shedding, doth extend.

3 Daarom is het land in rouw gedompeld, En kwijnen al zijn bewoners; Zelfs de beesten in het wild, de vogels in de lucht, En de vissen in de zee komen om.

For this cause, shall the land mourn, and everyone who dwelleth therein shall languish, with the wild beast of the field and with the bird of the heavens, —moreover also, the fishes of the sea, shall be withdrawn.

4 Toch is er niemand, die zich verzet, of berispt; Priesters, ook tegen u is mijn aanklacht gericht!

Howbeit let, no man, contend, nor let him rebuke another, —since, thy people, are as they who contend against a priest:

5 Gij zijt gestruikeld op klaarlichte dag, De profeet met u in de nacht.

So shouldst thou stumble in the daytime, and even the prophet stumble with thee, in the night, —and I should destroy thine own mother.

6 Ik zal u verdelgen, zoals mijn volk wordt verdelgd, Daar het geen kennis van God meer bezit; Omdat ook gij die kennis hebt verworpen, Zal Ik u uit mijn priesterschap werpen. Omdat gij de wet van uw God hebt vergeten, Zal Ik ook uw zonen vergeten;

My people, are destroyed, for lack of knowledge, —Because, thou, hast rejected knowledge, therefore will I reject thee from ministering as priest unto me, and, because thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I also, will forget thy children.

7 Hoe talrijker ze werden, hoe meer ze tegen Mij misdeden, En hun glorie in schande verkeerden.

As they were magnified, so, they sinned against me, —My glory—for what was contemptible, did they exchange.

8 Ze leven van de zonde van mijn volk, En zitten te vlassen op zijn schuld;

The sin of my people, they do eat, —and. unto their iniquity, lift they up every man his desire.

9 Daarom zal het den priester gaan als het volk: Ik zal zijn gedrag op hem wreken, zijn werken vergelden.

So doth it come to be—like people, like priest, —therefore will I visit upon him his ways, and, his doings, will I bring back to him;

10 Ze zullen eten, maar niet worden verzadigd, Ontucht bedrijven, geen genot er in vinden. Want ze hebben Jahweh verlaten, om ontucht te doen,

And they shall eat, and not be satisfied, they have encouraged unchastity, yet have not been making increase, —for unto, Yahweh, have they left off giving heed: —

11 Wijn en most namen hun hart in beslag.

Unchastity, and wine, and new wine, take away the heart.

12 Mijn volk ondervraagt zijn stuk hout, En zijn stok moet hem de toekomst voorspellen; Want hun wulpse geest heeft ze op een dwaalspoor gebracht, Door hun ontucht hebben ze hun God verlaten.

My people, of their Wood, do ask, —Let, their Staff, then tell them, —for, the spirit of unchastity, hath led them astray, and they have unchastely departed from under their God.

13 Ze offeren op de toppen der bergen, En branden wierook op de heuvels, Onder eik, wilg en terebint, Omdat daar de schaduw zo goed is. Neen, als uw dochters ontucht bedrijven, En uw schoondochters overspel doen,

On the headlands of the mountains, they sacrifice, and, on the hills, burn they incense, under oak and poplar and terebinth, because, pleasant, is the shade thereof: For this cause, do your daughters, become unchaste, and, your brides, commit adultery.

14 Zal Ik uw dochters niet straffen, omdat ze ontucht bedrijven, Uw schoondochters niet, omdat ze overspel doen. Want zelf zonderen zij zich met deernen af, En offeren met tempelhoeren; Zo is het onverstandige volk Geheel te gronde gegaan!

I do not bring punishment upon your daughters when they become unchaste, nor upon your brides, when they commit adultery, for, the men themselves, with unchaste women, do seclude themselves, and, with the common women of the shrine, do offer sacrifice, —and, a people who will not discern, must be ruined.

15 Israël, wilt gij ontucht bedrijven, Laat Juda zich niet schuldig maken! Gaat niet naar Gilgal, niet naar Bet-Awen, Zweert niet: "Zo waar als Jahweh leeft!"

Though unchaste art thou, O Israel, let not Judah, become guilty, neither let them enter Gilgal, nor go up to Beth-aven, and [then] swear, By the life of Yahweh!

16 Want Israël heeft zich verzet als een koppige koe, Nu zal Jahweh ze weiden als een losbandig lam;

For, as a heifer that is stubborn, hath Israel, been stubborn, —Now, can Yahweh, turn them out to pasture, like a young ram in a wide place?

17 Efraïm heeft zich aan afgodsbeelden gekoppeld, Laat het begaan!

Mated with idols, is Ephraim, let him alone.

18 Ze slempen wijn, zijn op ontucht verzot, En verkiezen de schande boven hun glorie!

Their drinking-bout, having passed, —they became, unchaste, they loved wildly, a contempt, became her great men.

19 Maar de storm pakt ze weg op zijn vleugels, Van hun altaren oogsten ze schande!

The wind hath bound her up in its wings, —that they may be ashamed, because of their sacrifices.
