Genesis 36

1 Dit zijn de nakomelingen van Esau of Edom.

Now these are the generations of Esau, that is to say, Edom.

2 Esau had zich de volgende vrouwen uit de kanaänietische meisjes genomen: Ada, de dochter van den Chittiet Elon; Oholibama, de dochter van Ana, de kleindochter van den Chiwwiet Sibon;

Esau's wives were women of Canaan: Adah, the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite,

3 Basemat, de dochter van Jisjmaël, de zuster van Nebajot.

And Basemath, Ishmael's daughter, the sister of Nebaioth.

4 Ada baarde aan Esau Elifaz; Basemat Reoeël;

Adah had a son Eliphaz; and Basemath was the mother of Reuel;

5 Oholibama baarde Jeoesj, Jalam en Kórach. Dit zijn de zonen van Esau, die hem in het land Kanaän werden geboren.

Oholibamah was the mother of Jeush, Jalam, and Korah; these are the sons of Esau, whose birth took place in the land of Canaan.

6 Daarna nam Esau zijn vrouwen, zonen en dochters en allen, die tot zijn gezin behoorden, met zijn kudde, runderen en al de bezittingen, die hij in het land Kanaän verworven had, en trok van zijn broer Jakob weg naar een ander land.

Esau took his wives and his sons and his daughters, and all the people of his house, and his beasts and his cattle and all his goods which he had got together in the land of Canaan, and went into the land of Seir, away from his brother Jacob.

7 Want zij bezaten te veel, om bij elkander te blijven; het land, waar zij woonden, kon hen wegens hun kudden niet onderhouden.

For their wealth was so great that the land was not wide enough for the two of them and all their cattle.

8 Esau of Edom ging zich dus in het gebergte Seïr vestigen.

So Esau made his living-place in the hill-country of Seir (Esau is Edom).

9 Dit is de geslachtslijst van Esau, den vader van Edom, in het gebergte Seïr.

And these are the generations of Esau, the father of the Edomites in the hill-country of Seir:

10 Dit zijn de namen van Esau’s zonen: Elifaz, de zoon van Esau’s vrouw Ada; Reoeël, de zoon van Esau’s vrouw Basemat.

These are the names of Esau's sons: Eliphaz, the son of Esau's wife Adah, and Reuel, the son of Esau's wife Basemath.

11 De zonen van Elifaz waren Teman, Omar, Sefo, Gatam en Kenaz.

The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.

12 Timna was een bijvrouw van Esau’s zoon Elifaz, en zij baarde aan Elifaz Amalek. Dit waren dus zonen van Esau’s vrouw Ada.

And Eliphaz, the son of Esau, had connection with a woman named Timna, who gave birth to Amalek: all these were the children of Esau's wife Adah.

13 Dit waren de zonen van Reoeël: Náchat en Zérach, Sjamma en Mizza. Ze waren dus zonen van Esau’s vrouw Basemat.

And these are the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah: they were the children of Esau's wife Basemath.

14 Dit waren de zonen van Esau’s vrouw Oholibama, de dochter van Ana, en kleindochter van Sibon. Zij baarde aan Esau Jeoesj, Jalam en Kórach.

And these are the sons of Esau's wife Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon: she was the mother of Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.

15 Dit zijn de stamhoofden van Esau’s zonen: De zonen van Elifaz, den eerstgeborene van Esau, zijn de stamhoofden van Teman, Omar, Sefo en Kenaz,

These were the chiefs among the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz, Esau's first son: Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz,

16 Kórach, Gatam en Amalek. Ze zijn de stamhoofden van de groep Elifaz in het land Edom. Ze zijn zonen van Ada.

Korah, Gatam, Amalek: all these were chiefs in the land of Edom, the offspring of Eliphaz, the seed of Adah.

17 Dit zijn de zonen van Esau’s zoon Reoeël: De stamhoofden van Náchat, Zérach, Sjamma en Mizza. Ze zijn de stamhoofden van de groep Reoeël in het land van Edom. Ze zijn zonen van Esau’s vrouw Basemat.

And these are the sons of Esau's son Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, Mizzah: these were the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom, the children of Esau's wife Basemath.

18 Dit zijn de zonen van Esau’s vrouw Oholibama. De stamhoofden van Jeoesj, Jalam en Kórach. Ze zijn de stamhoofden van de groep Oholibama, de dochter van Ana, de vrouw van Esau.

And these are the sons of Esau's wife Oholibamah: Jeush, Jalam, and Korah: these were the chiefs who came from Esau's wife Oholibamah, daughter of Anah.

19 Dit zijn dus de zonen van Esau of Edom met hun stamhoofden.

These were the sons of Esau (that is, Edom), and these were their chiefs.

20 En dit zijn de zonen van den Choriet Seïr, de eigenlijke bewoners van het land: Lotan, Sjobal, Sibon, en Ana.

These are the sons of Seir the Horite who were living in that country; Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,

21 Verder Disjon, Éser en Disjan. Ze zijn de stamhoofden van de Chorieten, de zonen van Seïr, in het land Edom.

Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan: these are the chiefs of the Horites, offspring of Seir in the land of Edom.

22 De zonen van Lotan waren Chori en Hemam; de zuster van Lotan was Timna.

The children of Lotan were Hori and Hemam; Lotan's sister was Timna.

23 Dit zijn de zonen van Sjobal: Alwan, Manáchat, Ebal, Sjefo en Onam.

And these are the children of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.

24 Dit zijn de zonen van Sibon: Ajja en Ana; dit is de Ana, die de hete bronnen vond in de woestijn, toen hij de ezels van zijn vader Sibon weidde.

And these are the children of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah; that same Anah who made the discovery of the water-springs in the waste land, when he was looking after the asses of his father Zibeon.

25 Dit zijn de kinderen van Ana: Disjon en Oholibama, de dochter van Ana.

And these are the children of Anah: Dishon and Oholibamah his daughter.

26 Dit zijn de zonen van Disjon: Chemdan, Esjban, Jitran en Keran.

These are the children of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran.

27 Dit zijn de zonen van Éser: Bilhan, Zaäwan en Akan.

These are the children of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.

28 Dit zijn de zonen van Disjan: Oes en Aran.

These are the children of Dishan: Uz and Aran.

29 Dit zijn dus de stamhoofden van de Chorieten: de stamhoofden van Lotan, Sjobal, Sibon, Ana,

These were the Horite chiefs: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,

30 Disjon, Éser en Disjan. Het zijn de stamhoofden van de verschillende chorietische stammen in het land Seïr.

Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. Such were the Horite chiefs in their order in the land of Seir.

31 En dit zijn de koningen, die over het land Edom regeerden, eer er een koning heerste over de zonen Israëls.

And these are the kings who were ruling in the land of Edom before there was any king over the children of Israel.

32 Béla, de zoon van Beor regeerde in Edom; zijn hofstad heette Dinhaba.

Bela, son of Beor, was king in Edom, and the name of his chief town was Dinhabah.

33 Na de dood van Béla regeerde Jobab, de zoon van Zérach uit Bosra in zijn plaats.

At his death, Jobab, son of Zerah of Bozrah, became king in his place.

34 Na de dood van Jobab regeerde Choesjam uit het land der Temanieten in zijn plaats.

And at the death of Jobab, Husham, from the country of the Temanites, became king in his place.

35 Na de dood van Choesjam regeerde Hadad, de zoon van Bedad in zijn plaats. Hij was het, die Midjan in de vlakten van Moab versloeg; zijn stad heette Awit.

And at the death of Husham, Hadad, son of Bedad, who overcame the Midianites in the field of Moab, became king; his chief town was named Avith.

36 Na de dood van Hadad regeerde Samla uit Masreka in zijn plaats.

And at the death of Hadad, Samlah of Masrekah became king.

37 Na de dood van Samla regeerde Sjaoel uit Rechobot aan de rivier in zijn plaats.

And at the death of Samlah, Shaul of Rehoboth by the River became king in his place.

38 Na de dood van Sjaoel regeerde Báal-Chanan, de zoon van Akbor in zijn plaats.

And at the death of Shaul, Baal-hanan, son of Achbor, became king.

39 Na de dood van Báal-Chanan, den zoon van Akbor, regeerde Hadar in zijn plaats zijn hofstad heette Paoe. Zijn vrouw heette Mehetabel, en was de dochter van Matred en kleindochter van Me-Zahab.

And at the death of Baal-hanan, Hadar became king in his place; his chief town was named Pau, and his wife's name was Mehetabel; she was the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-zahab.

40 En dit zijn de namen van de stamhoofden van Esau volgens hun familie, en naar de naam van hun woonplaats. De stamhoofden van Timna, Alwa en Jetet,

These are the names of the chiefs of Esau in the order of their families and their places: Timna, Alvah, Jetheth,

41 Oholibama, Ela en Pinon,

Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon,

42 Kenaz, Teman en Mibsar,

Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar,

43 Magdiël en Iram. Dit zijn dus de stamhoofden van Edom volgens hun woonplaats in het land, dat zij in bezit hadden genomen. Tot zover over Esau, den stamvader van Edom.

Magdiel, Iram; these are the Edomite chiefs, in their places in their heritage; this is Esau, the father of the Edomites.
