Genesis 24
1 Abraham was oud en hoogbejaard, en Jahweh had Abraham in alles gezegend.
Forsothe Abraham was eld, and of many daies, and the Lord hadde blessid hym in alle thingis.
2 Daarom sprak Abraham tot den oudsten dienaar van zijn huis, die het opzicht had over heel zijn bezit: Leg uw hand onder mijn heup;
And he seide to the eldere seruaunt of his hows, that was souereyn on alle thingis that he hadde, Put thou thin hond vndur myn hipe,
3 want ik wil u doen zweren bij Jahweh, den God des hemels en den God der aarde, dat gij voor mijn zoon geen vrouw zult kiezen uit de dochters der Kanaänieten, in wier midden ik woon;
that Y coniure thee bi the Lord God of heuene and of erthe, that thou take not a wijf to my sone of the douytris of Chanaan, among whiche Y dwelle;
4 maar dat gij naar mijn land en mijn familie zult gaan, om dáár een vrouw voor mijn zoon Isaäk te zoeken.
but that thou go to my lond and kynrede, and therof take a wijf to my sone Ysaac.
5 De dienaar antwoordde: Maar als nu de vrouw mij niet wil volgen naar dit land, moet ik dan uw zoon terugbrengen naar het land, waaruit gij zijt weggetrokken?
The seruaunt aunswerde, If the womman nyle come with me in to this lond, whether Y owe lede ayen thi sone to the place, fro which thou yedist out?
6 Maar Abraham zeide hem: Pas op, dat ge mijn zoon daar niet terugbrengt.
Abraham seide, Be war, lest ony tyme thou lede ayen thidur my sone;
7 Jahweh, de God des hemels, die mij uit mijn vaderlijk huis en uit mijn geboorteland heeft geleid, en die mij gezegd en bezworen heeft: "Aan uw nageslacht geef Ik dit land": Hij zal zijn engel voor u uit zenden, en u daar voor mijn zoon een vrouw laten vinden.
the Lord of heuene that took me fro the hows of my fadir, and fro the lond of my birthe, which spak to me, and swoor, and seide, Y schal yyue this lond to thi seed, he schal sende his aungel bifore thee, and thou schalt take fro thennus a wijf to my sone; forsothe if the womman nyle sue thee,
8 Mocht die vrouw u niet willen volgen, dan verplicht mijn eed u niet langer; maar in geen geval moogt ge mijn zoon daar terugbrengen.
thou schalt not be holdun bi the ooth; netheles lede not ayen my sone thidur.
9 Toen legde de dienaar zijn hand onder de heup van Abraham, zijn meester, en zwoer hem de gevraagde eed.
Therfore the seruaunt puttide his hond vndur the hipe of Abraham, his lord, and swoor to him on this word.
10 Nu nam de dienaar tien kamelen uit de kudde van zijn meester, pakte allerlei kostbaarheden van zijn meester bijeen, trok op en reisde naar Aram-Naharáim, naar de stad van Nachor.
And he took ten camels of the floc of his lord, and yede forth, and bar with him of alle the goodis of his lord; and he yede forth, and cam to Mesopotanye, to the citee of Nachor.
11 Buiten de stad bij de waterput liet hij de kamelen neerknielen; het was tegen de avond, dus tegen de tijd, dat de vrouwen naar buiten gaan, om water te putten.
And whanne he hadde maad the camels to reste with out the citee, bisidis the pit of watir, in the euentid, in that tyme in which wymmen ben wont to go out to drawe watir,
12 Toen sprak hij: Jahweh, God van mijn heer Abraham; ik bid U, laat mij nu slagen, en wees Abraham, mijn meester, genadig.
he seide, Lord God of my lord Abraham, Y biseche, meete with me to dai, and do mersi with my lord Abraham.
13 Zie, ik sta bij de bron, en de dochters van de burgers der stad komen naar buiten, om water te putten.
Lo! Y stonde nyy the welle of watir, and the douytris of enhabiters of this citee schulen go out to drawe watir;
14 Wanneer het meisje, tot wie ik zeg: "reik mij uw kruik, om te drinken", ten antwoord geeft: "drink, en ook uw kamelen zal ik water geven"; dan zal dàt het meisje zijn, dat Gij voor uw dienaar Isaäk hebt bestemd; en daaraan zal ik erkennen, dat Gij mijn heer genadig zijt.
therfor the damysel to which Y schal seie, Bowe doun thi watir pot that Y drynke, and schal answere, Drynke thou, but also Y schal yyue drynke to thi camels, thilke it is which thou hast maad redi to thi seruaunt Ysaac; and bi this Y schal vndirstonde that thou hast do mersi with my lord Abraham.
15 Nog had hij niet uitgesproken, of Rebekka kwam met een kruik op haar schouder naar buiten; zij was de dochter van Betoeël, den zoon van Milka, de vrouw van Nachor, Abrahams broer.
And he hadde not yit fillid the wordis with ynne hym silf, and lo! Rebecca, the douytir of Batuel, sone of Melcha, wijf of Nachor, brothir of Abraham, yede out, hauynge a watir pot in hir schuldre;
16 Het was een bijzonder mooi meisje; een maagd, die nog met geen man omgang had gehad. Zij daalde af naar de bron, vulde haar kruik, en kwam weer naar boven.
a damysel ful comeli, and faireste virgyn, and vnknowun of man. Sotheli sche cam doun to the welle, and fillide the watir pot, and turnide ayen.
17 De dienaar liep op haar toe, en sprak: Laat mij een beetje water drinken uit uw kruik.
And the seruaunt mette hir, and seide, Yyue thou to me a litil of the watir of thi pot to drynke.
18 Zij antwoordde: Drink, heer. En terstond liet zij de kruik op haar hand zakken, en gaf hem te drinken.
Which answerde, Drynke thou, my lord. And anoon sche dide doun the watir pot on hir schuldre, and yaf drynk to hym.
19 En toen zij hem had laten drinken, zeide zij nog: Ook voor uw kamelen zal ik water putten, tot ze genoeg hebben.
And whanne he hadde drunke, sche addide, But also Y schal drawe watir to thi camelis, til alle drynken.
20 Vlug goot ze haar kruik in de drinkbak leeg, repte zich weer naar de put, om opnieuw te gaan scheppen, en water te putten voor al zijn kamelen.
And sche helde out the watir pot in trouyis, and ran ayen to the pit, to drawe watir, and sche yaf watir drawun to alle the camels.
21 Zwijgend nam de man haar nauwkeuriger op, om te weten, of Jahweh zijn reis had doen slagen, of niet.
Sotheli he bihelde hir priueli, and wolde wite whether the Lord hadde sped his wei, ethir nay.
22 En nadat de kamelen volop hadden gedronken, nam de man een gouden neusring ter waarde van een halve sikkel, stak die in haar neus, deed om haar polsen twee armbanden ter waarde van tien gouden sikkels,
Therfor after that the camels drunken, the man brouyte forth goldun eere ryngis, weiynge twei siclis, and as many bies of the arm, in the weiyte of ten siclis.
23 en vroeg: Wiens dochter zijt gij; vertel me dat eens? Is er in het huis van uw vader plaats voor ons, om te overnachten?
And he seide to hir, Whos douyter art thou? schewe thou to me, is ony place in the hows of thi fadir to dwelle?
24 Ze gaf hem ten antwoord: Ik ben de dochter van Betoeël, den zoon van Milka, dien zij aan Nachor heeft gebaard.
Which answerde, Y am the douyter of Batuel, sone of Nachor, whom Melcha childide to him.
25 En zij ging voort: We hebben stro en voedsel in overvloed, ook plaats om te overnachten.
And sche addide, seiynge, Also ful myche of prouendre and of hey is at vs, and a large place to dwelle.
26 Toen viel de man op zijn knieën, aanbad Jahweh,
The man bowide hym silf,
27 en sprak: Gezegend zij Jahweh, de God van Abraham, mijn meester, die zijn genade en trouw aan mijn heer niet onthoudt; want Jahweh heeft mij geleid naar het huis van den broer van mijn heer.
and worschipide the Lord, and seide, Blessid be the Lord God of my lord Abraham, which God took not aweie his mersy and treuthe fro my lord, and ledde me bi riyt weie in to the hous of the brother of my lord.
28 Het meisje was al naar huis gelopen, en vertelde thuis aan haar moeder, wat er gebeurd was.
And so the damesel ran, and telde in the hous of hir modir alle thingis whiche sche hadde herd.
29 Nu had Rebekka een broer, die Laban heette. Laban liep naar den man, die buiten bij de bron stond;
Sotheli Rebecca hadde a brothir, Laban bi name, whiche yede out hastili to the man, where he was with out forth.
30 want hij had de neusring gezien met de armbanden om de polsen van zijn zuster, en zijn zuster Rebekka horen vertellen: zo en zo heeft de man met mij gesproken. Hij trad op hem toe, terwijl hij nog met de kamelen bij de bron stond te wachten,
And whanne he hadde seyn the eere ryngis and byes of the arm in the hondis of his sister, and hadde herd alle the wordis of hir tellynge, the man spak to me these thingis, he cam to the man that stood bisidis the camels, and nyy the welle of watir,
31 en sprak: Kom, gezegende van Jahweh; waarom blijft ge nog buiten staan, terwijl ik het huis en een plaats voor de kamelen al gereed heb?
and seide to him, Entre thou, the blessid of the Lord; whi stondist thou with outforth? I haue maad redi the hows, and a place to thi camels.
32 Hij leidde den man naar huis, zadelde de kamelen af, en gaf ze stro en voer; dan bracht hij voor hem en zijn mannen water, om zich de voeten te wassen.
And he brouyte hym in to the ynne, and unsadlide the camels, and yaf prouendre, and hey, and watir to waische the feet of camels, and of men that camen with hym.
33 Maar toen hem spijzen werden voorgezet, zeide hij: Ik eet niet, eer ik gezegd heb, wat ik moet zeggen. Hij zeide: Spreek op.
And breed was set forth in his siyt, which seide, Y schal not ete til Y speke my wordis. He answerde to the man, Speke thou.
34 En hij sprak: Ik ben de dienaar van Abraham.
And the man seide, Y am the seruaunt of Abraham,
35 Jahweh heeft mijn heer overvloedig gezegend, zodat hij rijk is geworden; Hij heeft hem schapen en runderen, zilver en goud, slaven en slavinnen, kamelen en ezels geschonken.
and the Lord hath blessid my lord greetli, and he is maad greet; and God yaf to hym scheep, and oxun, siluer, and gold, seruauntis, and handmaides, camels, and assis.
36 En Sara, de vrouw van mijn meester, heeft mijn heer een zoon gebaard, toen ze reeds oud was; en aan hem heeft hij heel zijn bezit vermaakt.
And Sare, `the wijf of my lord, childide a sone to my lord in his eelde, and he yaf alle thingis that he hadde to that sone.
37 Nu heeft mijn meester mij een eed laten zweren: Gij moogt voor mijn zoon geen vrouw nemen uit de dochters der Kanaänieten, in wier land ik woon;
And my lord chargide me greetli, and seide, Thou schalt not take to my sone a wijf of the douytris of Canaan, in whos lond Y dwelle,
38 maar ge moet naar het huis van mijn vader gaan en naar mijn stam, om daar een vrouw voor mijn zoon te halen.
but thou schalt go to the hous of my fadir, and of myn kynrede thou schalt take a wijf to my sone.
39 Ik zeide tot mijn heer: Maar als die vrouw mij niet wil volgen?
Forsothe Y answerde to my lord, What if the womman nyle come with me?
40 Hij antwoordde mij: Jahweh voor wiens aanschijn ik heb geleefd, Hij zal zijn engel met u zenden, en uw reis doen gelukken; gij zult een vrouw voor mijn zoon krijgen uit mijn stam en uit het huis van mijn vader.
He seide, The Lord in whose siyt Y go, schal sende his aungel with thee, and he schal dresse thi weie; and thou schalt take a wijf to my sone of my kynrede, and of my fadris hows.
41 Eerst dan zijt gij van de eed, die ik u opleg, ontslagen, als ge bij mijn stam zijt gekomen, en men er u geen geven wil; dan verplicht mijn eed u niet meer.
Thou schalt be innocent fro my curs, whanne thou comest to my kynesmen, and thei yyuen not `the womman to thee.
42 Toen ik dan vandaag bij de bron was gekomen, zeide ik: Jahweh, God van mijn heer Abraham; ach, laat toch de reis gelukken, die ik heb ondernomen.
Therfor Y cam to day to the welle of watir, and Y seide, Lord God of my lord Abraham, if thou hast dressid my weie in which Y go now, lo!
43 Zie, ik sta nu bij de waterbron. Wanneer de maagd, die naar buiten komt, om water te putten, en tot wie ik zeg: "geef mij een beetje water te drinken uit uw kruik",
Y stonde bisidis the welle of watir, and the maide that schal go out to drawe watir herith me, yyue thou to me a litil of water to drynke of thi pot,
44 mij ten antwoord geeft: "drink, en ook voor uw kamelen zal ik putten", dan zal zij de vrouw zijn, die Jahweh voor den zoon van mijn heer heeft bestemd.
and seith to me, And thou drynke, and Y schal drawe watir to thi camels, thilke is the womman which the Lord hath maad redi to the sone of my lord.
45 Nog had ik bij mezelf niet uitgesproken, of daar kwam Rebekka naar buiten met haar kruik op haar schouder, en daalde af naar de bron, om te putten. En toen ik haar zeide: "laat mij wat drinken",
While Y turnede in thouyte these thingis with me, Rebecca apperide, comynge with a pot which sche bare in the schuldre; and sche yede doun to the welle, and drowe watir. And Y seide to hir, Yyue thou a litil to me to drynke; and sche hastide,
46 liet ze dadelijk haar kruik zakken, en sprak: "drink, en ook uw kamelen zal ik water geven". Ik dronk, en ze liet ook de kamelen drinken.
and dide doun the pot of the schuldre, and seide to me, And thou drynke, and Y schal yyue drynke to thi camels; Y drank, and watride the camels.
47 Ik vroeg haar: Wiens dochter zijt gij? Zij antwoordde: De dochter van Betoeël, den zoon van Nachor, dien Milka hem geschonken heeft. Toen stak ik een ring in haar neus, en deed armbanden om haar polsen.
And Y axide hir, and seide, Whos douytir art thou? Which answerde, Y am the douytir of Batuel, sone of Nachor, whom Melcha childide to him. And so Y hangide eere ryngis to ourne hir face, and Y puttide bies of the arm in hir hondis,
48 Ik viel op mijn knieën om Jahweh te aanbidden, en ik zegende Jahweh, den God van mijn heer Abraham, die mij op de rechte weg had geleid, om voor zijn zoon de dochter van den broer van mijn meester te gaan halen.
and lowliche Y worschipide the Lord, and Y blessid the Lord God of my lord Abraham, which God ledde me bi riyt weie, that Y schulde take the douytir of the brothir of my lord to his sone.
49 Welnu dan, als gij mijn heer liefde en trouw wilt bewijzen, zegt het mij dan; maar zo niet, laat het mij eveneens weten, dan kan ik naar rechts of naar links gaan.
Wherfor if ye don mercy and treuthe with `my lord, schewe ye to me; ellis if othir thing plesith, also seie ye this, that Y go to the riyt side ethir to the left side.
50 Laban en Betoeël gaven ten antwoord: Dit is een beschikking van Jahweh; we kunnen er niets tegen inbrengen.
Laban and Batuel answeriden, The word is gon out of the Lord; we moun not speke ony other thing with thee without his plesaunce.
51 Zie Rebekka staat te uwer beschikking; neem haar met u mee, opdat zij de vrouw wordt van den zoon van uw heer, zoals Jahweh gezegd heeft.
Lo! Rebecca is bifore thee; take thou hir, and go forth, and be sche wijf of the sone of thi lord, as the Lord spak.
52 Toen de dienaar van Abraham had gehoord wat ze zeiden, wierp hij zich ter aarde voor Jahweh neer.
And whanne the child of Abraham hadde herd this, he felde doun, and worschipide the Lord in erthe.
53 Hij haalde zilveren en gouden sieraden en klederen te voorschijn, en schonk ze aan Rebekka; ook aan haar broer en haar moeder gaf hij kostbare geschenken.
And whanne vessels of siluer, and of gold, and clothis weren brouyt forth, he yaf tho to Rebecca for yifte, and he yaf yiftis to hir britheren, and modir.
54 Toen eerst aten en dronken hij en zijn mannen, en bleven ze overnachten. Zodra men de volgende morgen was opgestaan, sprak hij: Laat mij nu terug gaan naar mijn heer.
And whanne a feeste was maad, thei eeten and drunken to gider, and dwelliden there. Forsothe the child roos eerli, and spak, Delyuere ye me, that Y go to my lord.
55 Maar haar broer en haar moeder zeiden: Laat het meisje nog een dag of tien bij ons blijven; dan kan ze vertrekken.
Hir britheren and modir answerden, The damesele dwelle nameli ten daies at vs, and aftirward sche schal go forth.
56 Maar hij antwoordde hun: Houdt me niet tegen, nu Jahweh mijn reis heeft doen slagen; staat mij dus toe, naar mijn heer te vertrekken.
The child seide, Nyle ye holde me, for the Lord hath dressid my weie; delyuere ye me, that I go to my lord.
57 Ze zeiden: We zullen het meisje roepen, en het haar zelf vragen.
And thei seiden, Clepe we the damysele, and axe we hir wille.
58 Zij riepen Rebekka, en vroegen haar: Wilt ge met dien man meegaan? Zij antwoordde: Ja!
And whanne sche was clepid, and cam, thei axiden, Wolt thou go with this man?
59 Nu lieten ze hun zuster Rebekka vertrekken, vergezeld van haar min en den dienaar van Abraham met zijn volk.
And sche seide, Y schal go. Therfor they delyueriden hir, and hir nurse, and the seruaunt of Abraham, and hise felowis, and wischiden prosperitees to her sister,
60 Zij zegenden Rebekka, en zeiden tot haar: Zuster, moogt ge tot duizend maal tienduizenden groeien, En moge uw kroost de poorten bezitten van die het haten.
and seiden, Thou art oure sister, encreesse thou in to a thousand thousandis, and thi seed gete the yatis of hise enemyes.
61 Toen maakten Rebekka en haar dienstmaagd zich klaar, stegen op de kamelen, en sloten zich aan bij den man; de dienaar nam Rebekka mee, en vertrok.
Therfor Rebecca and hir damesels stieden on the camels, and sueden the man, which turnede ayen hasteli to his lord.
62 Intussen was Isaäk naar de woestijn bij de bron van Lachai-Roï getrokken, en woonde hij in het land van de Négeb.
In that tyme Ysaac walkide bi the weie that ledith to the pit, whos name is of hym that lyueth and seeth; for he dwellide in the south lond.
63 Eens was Isaäk bij het vallen van de avond het veld ingegaan, om zich wat te verzetten; toevallig sloeg hij zijn ogen op, en zie: daar kwamen kamelen aan.
And he yede out to thenke in the feeld, for the dai was `bowid thanne; and whanne he hadde reisid the iyen, he seiy camels comynge afer.
64 Ook Rebekka sloeg haar ogen op; en toen zij Isaäk zag, liet zij zich van haar kameel afglijden,
And whanne Ysaac was seyn, Rebecca liyte doun of the camel,
65 en sprak tot den dienaar: Wie is die man daar, die ons in het veld tegemoet komt? De dienaar antwoordde: Dat is mijn meester. Toen nam ze haar sluier, en bedekte zich.
and seide to the child, Who is that man that cometh bi the feeld in to the metyng of vs? And the child seide to hir, He is my lord. And sche took soone a mentil, and hilide hir.
66 En nadat de dienaar alles, wat hij gedaan had, aan Isaäk had verteld,
Forsothe the seruaunt tolde to his lord Ysaac alle thingis whiche he hadde do;
67 leidde Isaäk Rebekka naar de tent van Sara zijn moeder, en nam haar tot vrouw. Isaäk kreeg haar lief, en troostte zich over de dood van zijn moeder.
which Ysaac ledde hir in to the tabernacle of Sare, his modir, and took hir to wijf; and so myche he louede hir, that he temperide the sorewe which bifelde of the deeth of the modir.
