Ezechiël 21
1 Toen werd dit woord van Jahweh tot mij gericht:
And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
2 Mensenkind, richt dan uw gelaat naar Jerusalem, en laat uw woorden kletteren tegen hun heiligdom; profeteer tegen Israëls bodem,
Son of man, set thy face toward Jerusalem, and drop thy word toward the holy places, and prophesy against the land of Israel,
3 en zeg tot het land van Israël: Zo spreekt Jahweh, de Heer! Ik kom op u af; Ik trek mijn zwaard uit de schede, en delg uit u weg zowel goeden als kwaden.
And say to the land of Israel, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I am against thee, and will draw forth my sword out of its sheath, and will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked.
4 Om uit u te verdelgen zowel goeden als kwaden, daarom gaat mijn zwaard uit de schede tegen alle schepselen van zuid tot noord.
Seeing then that I will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked, therefore shall my sword go forth from its sheath against all flesh from the south to the north:
5 Dan zullen alle schepselen erkennen, dat Ik, Jahweh, mijn zwaard uit de schede heb getrokken! Neen, het gaat er niet meer in terug!
That all flesh may know that I the LORD have drawn my sword out of its sheath: it shall not return any more.
6 Mensenkind. ge moet in hun bijzijn gaan kreunen; kreunen alsof u de lenden breken, alsof ge weeën lijdt.
Sigh therefore, thou son of man, with breaking heart; and with bitterness sigh before their eyes.
7 En als ze u dan vragen: Waarom kreunt ge? moet ge zeggen: Over een tijding die komt, waardoor aller hart het besterft, hun handen slap hangen, hun moed versaagt, hun knieën knikken. Waarachtig, het komt, het zal gebeuren, zegt Jahweh, de Heer!
And it shall be, when they say to thee, Why sighest thou? that thou shalt answer, For the tidings; because it cometh: and every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and every spirit shall faint, and all knees shall be weak as water: behold, it cometh, and shall be brought to pass, saith the Lord GOD.
8 Het woord van Jahweh werd tot mij gericht:
Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
9 Menschenzoon, profeteer en zeg: Zo spreekt Jahweh: Een zwaard, een zwaard is geslepen, Een zwaard is gewet;
Son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD; Say, A sword, a sword is sharpened, and also polished:
10 Om te slachten is het geslepen, Om te bliksemen is het gewet! Het slaat onheelbare wonden, Het spot met elke knuppel.
It is sharpened to make a grievous slaughter; it is polished that it may glitter: should we then make mirth? it despiseth the rod of my son, as every tree.
11 Het is geslepen, om het in de vuist te vatten, Gewet, om het een moordenaar in de hand te drukken.
And he hath given it to be polished, that it may be handled: the sword is sharpened, and it is polished, to give it into the hand of the slayer.
12 Schreeuw en jammer, mensenkind, Want het keert zich tegen mijn volk, En tegen alle vorsten van Israël: Aan het zwaard zijn ze vervallen, tegelijk met mijn volk!
Cry and wail, son of man: for it shall be upon my people, it shall be upon all the princes of Israel: terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon my people: smite therefore upon thy thigh.
13 Daarom, sla op uw heup, Want de proef is genomen; En als de knuppel het begeeft, Het zwaard doet het niet, zegt Jahweh, de Heer!
Because it is a trial, and what if the sword despise even the rod? it shall be no more, saith the Lord GOD.
14 En gij, mensenkind, profeteer, En klap in uw handen; Verdubbel het zwaard in tweeën en drieën, Dat het een moordzwaard mag zijn! Het grote moordzwaard suist om hen heen,
Thou therefore, son of man, prophesy, and smite thy hands together, and let the sword be doubled the third time, the sword of the slain: it is the sword of the great men that are slain, which entereth into their private chambers.
15 Opdat aller hart het besterft, En tallozen vallen: Aan al hun poorten heb Ik een slachtbank gezet! Gij zwaard, gevormd om te bliksemen, En om te slachten gewet,
I have set the point of the sword against all their gates, that their heart may faint, and their ruins be multiplied: ah! it is made bright, it is sharpened for the slaughter.
16 Sla achteruit en naar rechts, Naar voren, naar links. Waarheen uw snede zich richt,
Go thee one way or other, either on the right hand, or on the left, wherever thy face is set.
17 Klap ook Ik in mijn handen, En koel Ik mijn woede: Ik, Jahweh, heb het gezegd!
I will also smite my hands together, and I will cause my fury to rest: I the LORD have said it.
18 Het woord van Jahweh werd tot mij gericht:
The word of the LORD came to me again, saying,
19 Mensenkind, leg twee wegen aan, waarlangs het zwaard van Babels koning kan komen; van één land moeten ze beiden uitgaan. Zet een handwijzer aan het beginpunt van de weg naar de stad.
Also, thou son of man, mark two ways, that the sword of the king of Babylon may come: both ways shall come forth from one land: and choose thou a place, choose it at the head of the way to the city.
20 Eén weg moet ge banen, waarlangs het zwaard naar Rabba der Ammonieten komt; en een andere weg, waarlangs het naar Juda met haar middelpunt Jerusalem komt.
Mark a way, that the sword may come to Rabbah of the Ammonites, and to Judah in Jerusalem the fortified.
21 Want de koning van Babel staat aan de tweesprong, aan de kop der beide wegen, om een orakel uit te lokken. Hij schudt de pijlen, ondervraagt de huisgoden, en bekijkt de lever.
For the king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination: he made his arrows bright, he consulted with images, he looked in the liver.
22 In zijn rechterhand heeft hij het lot "Jerusalem" gekregen, en nu heft hij een moordgeroep aan, en stoot hij de oorlogskreet uit, om aan de poorten stormrammen te plaatsen, een wal op te werpen en verschansingen te bouwen.
At his right hand was the divination for Jerusalem, to appoint captains, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with shouting, to appoint battering rams against the gates, to cast a siege mound, and to build a fort.
23 En ofschoon het in hun ogen maar een loos orakel is: want hùn zijn de heiligste eden; toch brengt het hun schuld in herinnering, opdat ze gegrepen worden.
And it shall be to them as a false divination in their sight, to them that have sworn oaths: but he will call to remembrance the iniquity, that they may be taken.
24 Daarom, zegt Jahweh, de Heer: Daar gij aan uw schuld hebt herinnerd, omdat uw zonden openbaar zijn geworden en het slechte in al uw daden aan de dag is gekomen, daarom zult ge met de vuist gegrepen worden!
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye have made your iniquity to be remembered, in that your transgressions are discovered, so that in all your doings your sins do appear; because, I say, that ye are come to remembrance, ye shall be taken with the hand.
25 En gij, verworpeling, misdadiger, vorst van Israël, wiens tijd gekomen is, nu de schuld het toppunt bereikt heeft:
And thou, profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day is come, when iniquity shall have an end,
26 Zo spreekt Jahweh, de Heer! Weg met de diadeem en weg met de kroon! Dat is het echte niet! Het lage omhoog; het hoge omlaag!
Thus saith the Lord GOD; Remove the diadem, and take off the crown: this shall not be the same: exalt him that is low, and abase him that is high.
27 Omkeer, omkeer, omkeer zal Ik bewerken. Wee over haar! Zo zal ze blijven, totdat Hij komt, die er recht op heeft; Hem zal Ik ze geven.
I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he cometh whose right it is; and I will give it him.
28 Mensenkind, ge moet profeteren en zeggen: Zo spreekt Jahweh, de Heer, over de Ammonieten en hun schande: Een zwaard, een zwaard is getrokken om te slachten, Gewet om af te maken, gewet om te bliksemen:
And thou, son of man, prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning the Ammonites, and concerning their reproach; even say thou, The sword, the sword is drawn: for the slaughter it is polished, to consume because of the glittering:
29 Terwijl men loze visioenen voor u schouwt, En valse voorspellingen doet. Men zal het aan de hals der verdoemden leggen, En van goddelozen: Wier dag is gekomen, Nu de schuld haar toppunt bereikt!
While they see vanity to thee, while they divine a lie to thee, to bring thee upon the necks of them that are slain, of the wicked, whose day is come, when their iniquity shall have an end.
30 Keer terug naar uw steden, Naar de plek waar ge werdt geschapen; Want in het land van uw oorsprong Zal Ik u richten!
Shall I cause it to return into its sheath? I will judge thee in the place where thou wast created, in the land of thy nativity.
31 Ik zal u mijn woede laten voelen, Met mijn gloeiende toorn op u blazen, U overleveren in de macht van barbaren, Die verderf zullen smeden.
And I will pour out my indignation upon thee, I will blow against thee in the fire of my wrath, and deliver thee into the hand of cruel men, and skilful to destroy.
32 Het vuur zult ge tot brandstof dienen, Uw bloed zal midden in uw land stromen, En niemand zal meer aan u denken: Waarachtig, Ik, Jahweh. heb het gezegd.
Thou shalt be for fuel to the fire; thy blood shall be in the midst of the land; thou shalt be no more remembered: for I the LORD have spoken it.
