Ezechiël 16
1 Het woord van Jahweh werd tot mij gericht:
And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
2 Mensenkind, ge moet Jerusalem haar gruwel doen kennen
Son of man, make known unto Jerusalem her abominations,
3 en zeggen: Zo spreekt Jahweh, de Heer, tot Jerusalem! Uw land van afkomst en geboorte is Kanaän; uw vader was een Amoriet, uw moeder een Hittiet.
And thou shalt say, Thus hath said the Lord Eternal unto Jerusalem, Thy origin and thy birth are out of the land of Canaan: thy father was an Emorite, and thy mother a Hittite.
4 Op deze manier zijt ge ter wereld gekomen: Toen ge geboren werdt, heeft niemand uw navelstreng afgeknipt, of u met water schoongewassen; met zout werdt ge niet ingewreven, niet in doeken gewikkeld.
And as for thy birth, on the day thou wast born thy navel was not cut, nor wast thou washed in water to he cleansed; and thou wast not rubbed with salt, nor wrapt in swaddling clothes.
5 Geen oog ontfermde zich over u, om uit medelijden u een van die zorgen te wijden. Neen, op de dag van uw geboorte werdt ge te vondeling gelegd op het vrije veld, omdat men uw leven niets waard vond.
No eye looked with pity on thee, to do any of these things unto thee, to have compassion upon thee; but thou wast cast out on the open field, with a loathing of thy body, on the day that thou wast born.
6 Toen kwam Ik u voorbij, en zag u spartelen in uw bloed. Ik sprak tot u, terwijl ge met bloed waart besmeurd: Blijf leven!
But I passed then by thee, and I saw thee stained with thy own blood, and I said unto thee, In thy blood, live; yea, I said unto thee, In thy blood, live.
7 fris als een veldbloem maakte Ik u. Ge groeide op en werdt groot; ge bereikte de leeftijd der stonden: uw borsten waren ontwikkeld, uw haar begon te groeien; maar ge waart nog altijd bloot en naakt.
Myriads, like the vegetation of the field, did I make of thee, and thou didst increase and become great, and thou attainedst the highest attractions: with thy breasts developed, and thy hair full grown; but thou wast still naked and bare.
8 Weer kwam Ik langs u, en bemerkte, dat de tijd der liefde voor u was gekomen; Ik spreidde mijn mantelslip over u uit, en bedekte uw schaamte. Ik zwoer u trouw, en sloot een verbond met u, zegt Jahweh, de Heer; zo werdt gij de mijne!
But I passed then by thee, and saw thee, and, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread the skirt of my garment over thee, and covered thy nakedness: yea, I swore unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord Eternal, and thou becamest mine.
9 Ik wies u met water, spoelde uw bloed van u af, en zalfde u met olie;
Then did I bathe thee with water, yea, I thoroughly washed away thy blood from thee; and I anointed thee with oil.
10 Ik deed u bonte kleren aan, gaf u schoeisel van het fijnste leder, bond u een hoofddoek om van damast, hulde u in een sluier van zijde.
I clothed thee also with broidered work, and made thee shoes of badger's skin, and I placed on thy head a turban of fine linen, and I covered thee with silk.
11 Ik smukte u met sieraden, deed armbanden aan uw polsen, een snoer om uw hals;
And I decked thee with ornaments, and I placed bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain around thy neck.
12 Ik gaf u een ring door uw neus en hangers aan uw oren een prachtige kroon op uw hoofd.
And I placed a ring on thy nose, and earrings in thy ears, and a crown of splendor on thy head.
13 Zo waart ge getooid met goud en zilver; uw kleren waren van damast en zijde en bonte weefsels. Het fijnste meel en honing en olie mocht ge eten. Ge werdt een stralende schoonheid, geschikt voor het koningschap!
Thus wast thou ornamented with gold and silver; and thy garments were of fine linen, and silk, and broidered work; fine flour, and honey, and oil didst thou eat: and thou wast exceedingly beautiful, and thou didst succeed to acquire dominion.
14 Van uw schoonheid ging een roep uit onder de volken, want die was volmaakt door de opschik, waarmee Ik u begiftigd had, spreekt Jahweh, de Heer!
And thy fame went forth among the nations because of thy beauty; for it was perfect through my glorious ornament, which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord Eternal.
15 Maar ge werdt vrijmoedig met uw schoonheid, en uw gevierdheid hadt ge veil. Iedereen, die voorbij kwam, hebt ge uw lust getoond, aan hem u overgegeven.
But thou didst trust in thy beauty, and play the harlot because of thy fame, and lavish thy lewd caresses on every one that passed by—on him they were bestowed.
16 Ge hebt uw kleren misbruikt, om er bonte hoogten van te maken: daarop hebt ge de deerne gespeeld, onbeschaamd en onbevreesd.
And thou didst take from thy garments, and deck thee high-places with divers colors, and play the harlot thereupon: never should the like come to pass, and never should it be so.
17 Ge hebt uw sieraden gehaald, het goud en zilver, dat Ik u had geschonken; ge hebt er mannenbeelden van gemaakt, en daarmee ontucht bedreven.
And thou didst take thy elegant ornaments of my gold and of my silver, which I had given thee, and make for thyself male images, and play the harlot with them;
18 Ge hebt uw bonte gewaden genomen, en ze daarmee bekleed; mijn olie en wierook hebt ge er voor neergezet.
And thou didst take thy broidered garments, and cover them: and my oil and my incense didst thou place before them.
19 Het voedsel dat Ik u gegeven had, het fijnste meel, olie en honing, die Ik u tot spijs had geschonken, hebt ge hun aangeboden tot een liefelijke offergeur: zo was het, spreekt Jahweh, de Heer.
And my bread which I had given thee, fine flour, and oil, and honey, which I had let thee eat, even this didst thou set before them for a sweet savour: yes, so was it, saith the Lord Eternal.
20 Zelfs hebt ge de zonen en de dochters, die ge Mij geschonken hadt, niet gespaard, maar ze hun ten offer gebracht, opdat zij ze konden verslinden. Was uw ontucht nog niet erg genoeg,
And thou didst take thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hadst born unto me, and didst slaughter these unto them to be devoured; [but] were thy acts of lewdness not yet enough?
21 dat ge mijn zonen moest slachten, ze door het vuur deedt gaan, en ze zo hebt opgeofferd?
That thou didst slay my children, and give them up to cause them to pass through the fire for them?
22 Nooit hebt ge bij al die gruwelen en ontucht eens teruggedacht aan de dagen van uw jeugd, toen ge naakt waart en ontbloot, en in uw bloed lag te trappelen.
And in all thy abominations and thy acts of lewdness thou didst not remember the days of thy youth, when thou wast naked and bare, when thou wast stained with thy blood.
23 Na al die boosheid: wee u, wee u! spreekt Jahweh, de Heer:
And it came to pass after all thy wickedness, —[woe, woe unto thee! saith the Lord Eternal; ]—
24 hebt ge u een bordeel gebouwd, en uw kraam geopend in elke straat;
That thou didst build unto thyself eminences, and make thyself elevations in every street.
25 op elke straathoek hebt ge uw kraam gebouwd, uw schoonheid onteerd, aan elken voorbijganger u aangeboden, en voortdurend ontucht gepleegd.
On the corner of every road didst thou build thy elevations, and make thy beauty abominable, and spread out thy feet to every one that passed by, and multiply thy acts of lewdness.
26 Ge hebt ontucht bedreven met de Egyptenaren, uw geile buren; voortdurend hebt ge ontucht gepleegd, om Mij te tergen.
And thou didst play the harlot with the Egyptians, thy neighbors, with large limbs, and multiply thy acts of lewdness, to provoke me to anger.
27 Zie, toen strekte Ik mijn hand al naar u uit, Ik kortte uw erfdeel in, en gaf u over aan de haat van uw vijandinnen, aan de Filistijnse meisjes, die zich schaamden over uw schandelijk gedrag.
And, behold, I stretched out my hand over thee, and diminished thy stated portion; and I gave thee up unto the will of those that hate thee, the daughters of the Philistines, who were made to blush for thy incestuous course.
28 Daarna hebt ge u aan de Assyriërs vergooid, omdat ge nog niet bevredigd waart; ook met hen hebt ge ontucht bedreven, en ge kondt er maar niet genoeg van krijgen.
Then didst thou play the harlot with the sons of Asshur, because thou wast unsatiable: yea, thou didst play the harlot with them, and wast even then not satisfied.
29 Zonder ophouden hebt ge ontucht bedreven met het handelsland Chaldea, maar ook daar werdt ge niet bevredigd.
And thou didst multiply thy lewdness with the traders' land as far as Chaldea; and even with this wast thou not satisfied.
30 Hoe heftig was uw hartstocht, zegt Jahweh, de Heer, dat ge dit alles, dit gedoe van een onbeschaamde deerne, volhieldt,
How very corrupt is thy heart, saith the Lord Eternal, seeing thou didst all these things, deeds of an abandoned lewd woman;
31 dat ge uw bordeel hebt gebouwd op elke straathoek, aan elke weg uw kraam hebt geopend, en toch geen echte deerne waart, die het enkel voor geld doet.
Seeing that thou didst build thy eminences at the corner of every road, and make thy elevations in every street; and wast not like a harlot, as thou scornedst the wages.
32 O overspelige vrouw, in plaats van uw eigen man neemt ge vreemden;
O thou adulterous wife! who, while bound to her husband, receiveth strangers!
33 en terwijl men aan alle deernen een vergoeding geeft, hebt gij geschenken aan al uw minnaars uitgedeeld: ge hebt ze omgekocht, om van alle kanten met ontuchtige bedoelingen tot u te komen.
Unto all harlots they give presents; but thou hast given thy presents to all thy lovers, and hast bribed them, that they might come unto thee from every side in thy acts of lewdness.
34 Ge deedt juist het omgekeerde van de andere vrouwen: ge waart een deerne, maar men behoefde u niet achterna te lopen; gij gaaft geschenken, maar u werd geen vergoeding gegeven; juist het omgekeerde hebt ge gedaan!
And the reverse was the case with thee from [other] women in thy acts of lewdness, that men did not follow thee to seek thy lewd caresses; and because thou gavest the wages, and no wages were given thee: so was it the reverse with thee.
35 Daarom deerne, luister naar het woord van Jahweh!
Therefore, O harlot, hear the word of the Lord!
36 Dit zegt Jahweh, de Heer: Omdat ge voor uw minnaars en voor al uw gruwelijke schandgoden in uw ontucht uw schaamte ontbloot en uw naaktheid onthuld hebt, en het bloed van uw zonen aan hen hebt geofferd,
Thus hath said the Lord Eternal, Whereas thy wealth was squandered, and thy nakedness was uncovered through thy lewd acts with thy lovers, and with all thy abominable idols, and for the blood of thy children, whom thou didst give unto them:
37 daarom breng Ik al uw minnaars bijeen, voor wie ge zo lief waart; zowel hen die ge bemind hebt, als hen die ge hebt achtergesteld. Ik breng ze van alle kanten rond u samen, om voor hen uw schaamte te onthullen, zodat ze u in heel uw naaktheid kunnen aanschouwen!
Therefore, behold, I will gather all thy lovers, whom thou hast given pleasure, and all whom thou hast loved, together with all whom thou hast hated, —yea, I will gather them all round about thee, and will uncover thy nakedness unto them, that they may see all thy nakedness.
38 Ik zal aan u het vonnis voltrekken van een vrouw, die trouw breekt en bloed vergiet, en zo mijn toorn en jaloezie op u koelen.
And I will judge thee, as adulteresses and women that shed blood are judged; and I will bring upon thee the blood of fury and jealousy.
39 Ik zal u aan hen overleveren; zij zullen uw bordeel afbreken, uw kramen omvertrekken, u de kleren van het lijf rukken, uw sieraden afnemen, en u naakt en bloot laten liggen.
And I will also give thee up into their hand, and they shall pull down thy eminences, and shall break down thy elevations; and they shall strip thee of thy clothes, and they shall take thy elegant ornaments, and leave thee naked and bare.
40 Zij zullen een vergadering over u houden, u met keien stenigen, en met hun zwaard u in stukken houwen.
And they shall bring up against thee an assembly, and they shall stone thee with stones, and thrust thee through with their swords;
41 Dan steken ze uw huizen in brand, en zullen ten aanschouwen van talrijke vrouwen het vonnis aan u voltrekken. Zo maak Ik een einde aan uw ontucht, en zult ge geen geschenken meer uitdelen!
And they shall burn thy houses with fire, and execute punishments on thee before the eyes of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from being a harlot, and also the wages [of sin] shalt thou not give any more.
42 Ik zal mijn woede op u koelen, mijn jaloezie op u stillen, en Ik zal voldaan zijn en niet meer ontstemd.
And then will I assuage my fury on thee, and my jealousy shall depart from thee, and I will be quiet, and will be no more angry.
43 Omdat ge nooit eens terugdacht aan de dagen van uw jeugd, maar Mij door dat alles hebt blijven prikkelen, daarom zal ook Ik uw gedrag op uw hoofd laten neerkomen, spreekt Jahweh, de Heer, en zult ge bij al uw gruwelen tenminste geen ontucht meer doen!
Because that thou didst not remember the days of thy youth, but didst irritate me with all these things: behold, therefore I also will bring thy course upon thy head, saith the Lord Eternal, and thou shalt no more commit incest with all thy [other] abominations.
44 Zie, elke spreukendichter past op u het gezegde toe: Zo moeder, zo dochter!
Behold, every one that speaketh in proverbs shall use this proverb against thee, saying, As the mother is, so is her daughter.
45 Een echte dochter zijt ge van uw moeder, die haar man en haar kinderen verliet; ge zijt het evenbeeld van uw zusters, die niets om haar man en om haar kinderen gaven. Uw moeder was een Hittiet, uw vader een Amoriet.
Thou art thy mother's daughter, loathing her husband and her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters, who have loathed their husbands and their children: your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Emorite.
46 Uw oudste zuster, die aan uw linkerhand woont, is Samaria met haar dochters; uw jongste zuster, die aan uw rechterhand woont, is Sodoma met haar dochters.
And thy elder sister is Samaria, she with her daughters, that dwelleth at thy left hand, and thy younger sister, that dwelleth at thy right hand, is Sodom with her daughters.
47 Ge hebt u niet tevreden gesteld, in haar voetspoor te treden, en gruwelen als zij te bedrijven: heel uw gedrag was stuitender nog dan het hare!
Yet not even in their ways didst thou walk, nor act according to their abominations: as though this were quite too little, and thou wast more corrupt than they in all thy ways.
48 Zo waar Ik leef, zegt Jahweh, de Heer: Uw zuster Sodoma met haar dochters heeft het zo bont niet gemaakt als gij met uw dochters.
As I live, saith the Lord Eternal, Sodom thy sister, she with her daughters, hath not done as thou hast done, thou with thy daughters.
49 Dit was enkel de zonde van Sodoma, uw zuster: zij met haar dochters leden aan overmoed, aan zwelgerij en zorgeloze rust; den misdeelde en behoeftige ondersteunden zij niet;
Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom: Pride, abundance of food, and prosperous security were hers and her daughters'; but the hand of the poor and needy did she not strengthen.
50 ze waren hovaardig, en bedreven gruwelen in mijn ogen. Toch heb Ik ze verstoten, zoals ge gezien hebt.
And they became haughty, and committed abominations before me: therefore did I remove them when I saw their course.
51 Ook Samaria heeft nog niet de helft misdaan van wat gij hebt bedreven. Ge hebt veel erger gruwelen bedreven dan zij beiden, en door uw stuitend gedrag uw zusters nog in een gunstig daglicht geplaatst.
And Samaria hath not committed even the half of thy sins; but thou didst multiply thy abominations more than they; and thou hast justified thy sisters through all thy abominations which thou hast done.
52 Draag dan ook gij uw schande, gij die voor uw zusters in de bres zijt gesprongen; want door uw veel zwaardere zonden zijn zij bij u vergeleken onschuldig. Schaam u dus en draag uw schande, dat ge uw zusters nog verontschuldigt.
Bear then thou also thy own confusion, which thou didst adjudge unto each of thy sisters; through thy sins, which thou hast committed more abominably than they, are they made more righteous than thou: therefore thou also—be ashamed, and bear thy confusion, since thou hast justified thy sisters.
53 Ik zal haar lot ten beste keren: het lot van Sodoma met haar dochters, en het lot van Samaria met haar dochters,
And I will bring back again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, and the captivity of the captives in the midst of them:
54 opdat ge uw schande moogt dragen en u moogt schamen over al wat ge misdreven hebt, en gij die beiden berusting kunt brengen.
In order that thou mayest bear thy confusion, and mayest be confounded because of all that thou hast done, when thou art a comfort unto them.
55 Uw zuster Sodoma zal met haar dochters in haar vroegere staat worden hersteld, en Samaria zal met haar dochters terugkeren tot haar vroegere toestand.
And thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their former state, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former state, and thou and thy daughters shall return to your former state.
56 Was uw zuster Sodoma niet tot een schimpwoord op uw lippen, ten tijde van uw overmoed,
And was not thy sister Sodom a report in thy mouth in the days of thy pride,
57 voordat uw schaamte ontbloot werd? Nu zijt ge net als zij de spot der vrouwen van Edom met heel zijn omgeving, de spot der Filistijnse vrouwen, die van alle kanten u honen.
Before yet thy wickedness was discovered, as at the time of the reproach of the daughters of Syria, and all those round about her, the daughters of the Philistines, who taunted thee on all sides?
58 Uw ontucht en uw schanddaad, ge zult ze dragen, zegt Jahweh, de Heer.
Thy incest and thy abominations, —thou thyself hadst to bear them, saith the Lord.
59 Zo spreekt Jahweh, de Heer: Eerst als Ik met u gedaan heb, zoals gij met Mij hebt gedaan: met u, die de eed zo gering acht, dat ge het verbond hebt verbroken:
For thus hath said the Lord Eternal, I will even deal with thee as thou hast done, thou who hast despised the oath by breaking the covenant.
60 dan zal Ik het verbond weer gedenken, dat Ik in uw jeugd met u aanging, en zal Ik een eeuwigdurend verbond met u sluiten.
Nevertheless will I indeed remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant.
61 Dan zult ge met schaamte terugdenken aan uw gedrag, als Ik uw oudere zusters met uw jongere zusters neem, en ze u tot dochters geef, zonder het aan u verplicht te zijn.
And thou shalt then remember thy ways, and be confounded, when thou receivest thy sisters, both those that are older than thou and younger than thou: and I will give them unto thee for daughters, though not because thou wast faithful to the covenant.
62 Ik zal mijn verbond met u aangaan, en gij zult erkennen, dat Ik Jahweh ben;
And I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord:
63 opdat ge tot inkeer komt en bloost, en van schaamte geen woord durft zeggen, als Ik u alles vergeef wat ge misdreven hebt, zegt Jahweh, de Heer.
In order that thou mayest remember, and feel ashamed, and never open thy mouth any more because of thy confusion, when I forgive thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord Eternal.
