Deuteronomium 7
1 Wanneer Jahweh, uw God, u het land heeft binnengeleid, dat gij thans in bezit gaat nemen, zal Hij talrijke volken voor u verjagen, de Chittieten, Girgasjieten, Amorieten, Kanaänieten, Perizzieten, Chiwwieten en Jeboesieten, zeven volken talrijker en machtiger dan gij.
When Yahweh thy God shall bring thee into the land which thou art going in to possess, and shall clear away many nations from before thee—the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites, and the Canaanites and the Perizzites, and the Hivites and the Jebusites—seven nations greater in number and stronger than thou;
2 Maar wanneer Jahweh, uw God, ze aan u heeft overgeleverd en gij ze verslaat, dan moet ge ze met de banvloek treffen; ge moogt geen verbond met hen sluiten en hun geen genade verlenen,
and Yahweh thy God shall deliver them up before thee, and thou shalt smite them, thou shalt devote them to destruction, thou shalt not solemnise with them a covenant neither shalt thou shew them favour;
3 en u niet vermaagschappen met hen, uw dochters niet aan hun zonen geven en hun dochters niet voor uw zonen nemen.
neither shalt thou intermarry with them, —thy daughter, shalt thou not give unto his son, nor his daughter, shalt thou take for thy son;
4 Want zij zouden uw zonen van Mij vervreemden, zodat zij vreemde goden gaan dienen; dan zou de toorn van Jahweh tegen u ontbranden, en zou Hij u spoedig verdelgen!
for he will turn aside thy son from following me, and they will serve other gods, —so shall the anger of Yahweh kindle upon you, and he will destroy thee, speedily.
5 Neen, maar zó moet gij met hen handelen: hun altaren moet ge omverwerpen, hun wijstenen verbrijzelen, hun heilige bomen omhouwen, hun afgodsbeelden verbranden.
Verily, thus, shall ye do unto them: Their altars, shall ye tear down, And their pillars, shall ye break in pieces, —And their sacred stems, shall ye hew down, And their carved images, shall ye burn up in the fire.
6 Want gij zijt een volk, dat aan Jahweh, uw God, is gewijd. Jahweh, uw God, heeft u uitverkoren onder alle volken op aarde, om Hem een eigen volk te zijn.
For a holy people, art thou unto Yahweh thy God: of thee, hath Yahweh thy God, made choice, that thou shouldest become his people as a treasure, above all the peoples that are on the face of the ground:
7 Niet omdat gij talrijker zijt dan andere volken, heeft Jahweh Zich aan u gehecht en u uitverkoren, want gij zijt het kleinste van alle volken;
not because ye were more in number than any of the peoples, did Yahweh become attached to you and make choice of you, —for, ye, were fewer than any of the peoples;
8 maar omdat Jahweh u lief had en zijn eed wilde houden, die Hij uw vaderen gezworen had, daarom heeft Jahweh u weggeleid met sterke hand en u bevrijd uit het slavenhuis, uit de macht van Farao, den koning van Egypte.
but because Yahweh loved you and because he would keep the oath which he sware unto your fathers, did Yahweh bring you forth with a firm hand, —and redeem thee out of the house of servants, out of the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
9 Erken dus, dat Jahweh, uw God, waarachtig God is; de getrouwe God, die het Verbond houdt en genade bewijst aan die Hem beminnen en zijn geboden onderhouden, tot in het duizendste geslacht,
So then, thou must know that, Yahweh thy God, he, is God, —the faithful GOD, keeping his covenant and his lovingkindness with them that love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations
10 maar die aan den lijve straft en verdelgt die Hem haten; die geen uitstel verleent aan die Hem haten, maar hen in eigen persoon laat boeten.
but requiting them who hate him unto his face to destroy them, —he will not be slack towards him that hateth him, unto his face, will he requite him.
11 Onderhoud dus de geboden, de bepalingen en voorschriften, waarvan ik u heden de naleving beveel.
So shalt thou keep the commandment and the statutes and the regulations, which I am commanding thee to-day, to do them.
12 Want zo ge aan deze voorschriften gehoorzaamt, ze onderhoudt en volbrengt, dan zal Jahweh, uw God, het Verbond houden, en u genade bewijzen, zoals Hij het uw vaders gezworen heeft.
Then shall it come to pass if ye will hearken unto these regulations, and keep and do them, then will Yahweh thy God keep with thee the covenant and the lovingkindness which he sware unto thy fathers;
13 Hij zal u beminnen, u zegenen en vermenigvuldigen; Hij zal in het land, dat Hij aan uw vaderen gezworen heeft, u te zullen geven, zegenen de vrucht van uw schoot en de vrucht van uw akker, uw koren, uw most en uw olie, de dracht uwer runderen en de worp uwer schapen.
and will love thee, and bless thee and multiply thee, —and bless the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy ground thy corn and thy new wine and thine oil the young of thy kine and the ewes of thy flock, upon the soil which he swart unto thy fathers to give unto thee.
14 Boven alle volken zult gij worden gezegend; geen onvruchtbare zal er onder u zijn, onder uw mannen of vrouwen, zelfs niet onder uw vee.
Blessed shalt thou be beyond all the peoples, —there shall not be in thee a barren male or female, nor among thy cattle;
15 Jahweh zal iedere ziekte ver van u houden, en u met geen der afschuwelijke egyptische kwalen bezoeken, die ge hebt leren kennen, maar ze doen neerkomen op al die u haten.
and Yahweh, will turn away, from thee, all disease, —and as for all the sore sicknesses of Egypt which thou knowest, he will not lay them upon thee, but will put them upon all who hate thee;
16 Gij zult zonder erbarmen alle volken verslinden, die Jahweh, uw God, u gaat overleveren; ge moogt hun goden niet dienen, want dat zou een valstrik voor u zijn.
and thou shalt devour all the peoples whom, Yahweh thy God, is delivering up unto thee, thine eye shall not look with pity upon them, neither shalt thou serve their gods, for a snare, would it be unto thee.
17 Misschien denkt ge bij uzelf: Die volken zijn talrijker dan ik; hoe zal ik ze kunnen verjagen?
Although thou mightest say in thy heart: More in number, are these nations than I, —how can, I dispossess them?
18 Neen, vrees ze niet! Herinner u steeds, wat Jahweh, uw God, aan Farao en heel Egypte gedaan heeft:
thou must not be afraid of them, —thou must, remember, what Yahweh thy God did, unto Pharaoh and unto all Egypt:
19 de grote rampen, de tekenen en wonderen, die gij met eigen oog hebt aanschouwd; de sterke hand en gespierde arm, waarmee Jahweh, uw God, u heeft weggeleid! Zo zal Jahweh, uw God, alle volken treffen, voor wie gij bevreesd zijt.
the great provings which thine own eyes saw, and the signs and the wonders and the firm hand and the stretched-out arm, wherewith Yahweh thy God brought thee forth, —so, will Yahweh thy God do unto all the peoples, before whom thou art afraid.
20 Zelfs horzels zendt Jahweh, uw God, op hen af, tot ook de rest, die zich voor u heeft verborgen, is verdelgd.
Moreover also, the hornet, will Yahweh thy God send among them, —until they are destroyed who are left remaining, and who are hiding themselves from thy face.
21 Neen, gij moet hen niet vrezen; want Jahweh, uw God, verblijft in uw midden, een machtige en ontzagwekkende God!
Thou shalt not be affrighted at their presence, —for Yahweh thy God in thy midst is a Go great and to be revered.
22 Zeker, Jahweh, uw God, zal die volken slechts langzaam aan voor u verjagen, en gij zult ze niet ineens kunnen verdelgen; anders krijgen de wilde dieren de overhand op u.
So will Yahweh thy God, clear away these nations from before thee little by little, —thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the wild beast of the field should multiply ever thee.
23 Maar Jahweh, uw God, levert ze aan u over, en houdt ze in grote verwarring, tot ze vernietigd zijn.
But Yahweh thy God will deliver them up before thee, —and discomfit them with a great discomfiture, until they are destroyed;
24 Hij levert hun koningen aan u uit, en zelfs hun naam zult ge wegvagen onder de hemel; niemand zal voor u stand kunnen houden, totdat gij ze hebt verdelgd.
and will deliver their kings into thy hand and thou shalt destroy their name, from under the heavens, —not a man shall stand before thee, until thou hast destroyed them.
25 Hun afgodsbeelden moet ge verbranden, het zilver en goud, dat hen bedekt, niet begeren en niet in bezit nemen, opdat het geen valstrik voor u wordt; want het is een afschuw voor Jahweh, uw God.
The carved images of their gods, shalt thou consume with fire, —thou shalt not covet the silver and gold upon them to take unto thee, lest thou be ensnared thereby; for the abomination of Yahweh thy God, it is;
26 Een dergelijke gruwel moogt ge niet in uw huis brengen; anders wordt ge eveneens met de banvloek getroffen: gij moet er van gruwen en walgen; want het is met de banvloek geslagen.
and thou shalt not bring an abomination into thy house, and so become devoted to destruction, like it, thou shalt, abhor, it, and thou shalt, loathe it, because a thing devoted to destruction, it is.
