Deuteronomium 15
1 Om de zeven jaren moet gij kwijtschelding verlenen.
Every seven years thou shalt make a release.
2 Dit is de wet omtrent de kwijtschelding: Iedere schuldeiser moet kwijtschelden, wat hij aan zijn naaste heeft geleend: hij mag zijn naaste en zijn broeder er niet lastig om vallen, omdat een kwijtschelding is afgekondigd ter ere van Jahweh.
And this [is] the ordinance of the release: thou shalt remit every private debt which thy neighbour owes thee, and thou shalt not ask payment of it from thy brother; for it has been called a release to the Lord thy God.
3 Een buitenlander moogt ge tot betaling dwingen, maar wat ge bij uw broeder hebt uitstaan, moet ge kwijtschelden.
Of a stranger thou shalt ask again whatsoever he has of thine, but to thy brother thou shalt remit his debt to thee.
4 Trouwens er behoeft onder u geen arme te zijn; want Jahweh, uw God, zal u zegenen in het land, dat Jahweh, uw God, u als erfbezit gaat geven,
For [thus] there shall not be a poor person in the midst of thee, for the Lord thy God will surely bless thee in the land which the Lord thy God gives thee by inheritance, that thou shouldest inherit it.
5 zo ge slechts gewillig luistert naar de stem van Jahweh, uw God, en al die geboden, die ik u heden geef, nauwgezet onderhoudt.
And if ye shall indeed hearken to the voice of the Lord your God, to keep and do all these commandments, as many as I charge thee this day,
6 Want Jahweh, uw God, zal u zegenen, zoals Hij het u heeft beloofd, zodat gij aan vele volken kunt lenen, maar zelf niets behoeft te lenen, en over vele volken zult heersen, maar niet door hen zult worden beheerst.
(for the Lord thy God has blessed thee in the way of which he spoke to thee, ) then thou shalt lend to many nations, but thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over thee.
7 Wanneer er onder u in een van uw steden in het land, dat Jahweh, uw God, u gaat geven, toch een arme medebroeder is, dan moogt gij niet hardvochtig zijn, en uw hand voor uw armen broeder niet gesloten houden.
And if there shall be in the midst of thee a poor [man] of thy brethren in one of thy cities in the land, which the Lord thy God gives thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, neither shalt thou by any means close up thine hand from thy brother who is in want.
8 Gij moet uw hand wijd voor hem openen, en hem bereidwillig lenen, wat hij nodig heeft voor zijn behoefte.
Thou shalt surely open thine hands to him, and shalt lend to him as much as he wants according to his need.
9 Zorg er voor, dat ge bij uzelf niet listig berekent: "Het zevende jaar, het jaar van kwijtschelding is nabij", en zo onwillig zoudt worden, uw armen broeder iets te geven. Want hij zou u aanklagen bij Jahweh, en gij zoudt schuldig staan.
Take heed to thyself that there be not a secret thing in thine heart, an iniquity, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, draws nigh; and thine eye shall be evil to thy brother that is in want, and thou shalt not give to him, and he shall cry against thee to the Lord, and there shall be great sin in thee.
10 Geef hem dus gaarne; laat uw hart niet bezwaard zijn, wanneer gij hem geeft. Want Jahweh, uw God, zal u daarvoor zegenen in al uw werken en in heel uw bedrijf.
Thou shalt surely give to him, and thou shalt lend him as much as he wants, according as he is in need; and thou shalt not grudge in thine heart as thou givest to him, because on this account the Lord thy God will bless thee in all thy works, and in all things on which thou shalt lay thine hand.
11 En omdat het in uw land niet zal ontbreken aan armen, gebied ik u: Open uw hand voor uw behoeftigen en armen broeder in uw land!
For the poor shall not fail off thy land, therefore I charge thee to do this thing, saying, Thou shalt surely open thine hands to thy poor brother, and to him that is distressed upon thy land.
12 Wanneer uw volksgenoot, een hebreeuwse man of vrouw, zich aan u verkoopt, dan zal hij u zes jaren dienen; maar in het zevende jaar moet ge hem vrijlaten.
And if thy brother [or sister], a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, be sold to thee, he shall serve thee six years, and in the seventh year thou shalt send him out free from thee.
13 En wanneer ge hem vrijlaat, moogt ge hem niet met lege handen laten vertrekken.
And when thou shalt send him out free from thee, thou shalt not send him out empty.
14 Gij moet hem ruimschoots bedelen uit uw kudde, van uw dorsvloer en kelder, en hem geven naar mate Jahweh, uw God, u heeft gezegend.
Thou shalt give him provision for the way from thy flock, and from thy corn, and from thy wine; as the Lord thy God has blessed thee, thou shalt give to him.
15 Denk er aan, dat gij slaaf zijt geweest in het land van Egypte, en dat Jahweh, uw God, u bevrijd heeft; daarom geef ik u thans dit gebod.
And thou shalt remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and the Lord thy God redeemed thee from thence; therefore I charge thee to do this thing.
16 Maar wanneer hij zegt: "Ik wil niet van u heengaan", omdat hij u en uw huisgezin liefheeft, en het goed bij u heeft,
And if he should say to thee, I will not go out from thee, because he continues to love thee and thy house, because he is well with thee;
17 dan moet gij een priem nemen, en die door zijn oor in de deur steken; dan is hij voor altijd uw slaaf. Met uw dienstmaagd zult ge hetzelfde doen.
then thou shalt take an awl, and bore his ear through to the door, and he shall be thy servant for ever; and in like manner shalt thou do to thy maid-servant.
18 Het mag u niet zwaar vallen, hem de vrijheid te geven. Want de zes jaren, dat hij u diende, heeft hij voor u het dubbele loon van een knecht verdiend; bovendien zal Jahweh, uw God, u zegenen bij al wat gij doet.
It shall not seem hard to thee when they are sent out free from thee, because [thy servant] has served thee six years according to the annual hire of a hireling; so the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all things whatsoever thou mayest do.
19 Alle mannelijke eerstelingen, die bij uw rundvee of kudde worden geboren, moet gij Jahweh, uw God, wijden. Ge moogt dus met den eersteling van uw rund geen arbeid verrichten, en den eersteling van uw kudde niet scheren.
Every first-born that shall be born among thy kine and thy sheep, thou shalt sanctify the males to the Lord thy God; thou shalt not work with thy first-born calf, and thou shalt not shear the first-born of thy sheep.
20 Ge moet ze met uw huisgezin jaarlijks voor het aanschijn van Jahweh, uw God, komen eten, op de plaats, die Jahweh zal uitverkiezen.
Thou shalt eat it before the Lord year by year in the place which the Lord thy God shall choose, thou and thy house.
21 Maar wanneer het iets scheelt, wanneer het lam is of blind, kortom een of ander lelijk gebrek heeft, dan moogt ge het niet aan Jahweh, uw God, offeren.
And if there be in it a blemish, if it be lame or blind, an evil blemish, thou shalt not sacrifice it to the Lord thy God.
22 Dan kunt ge er binnen uw poorten van eten, de onreine zowel als de reine, zoals van gazel en van hert.
Thou shalt eat it in thy cities; the unclean in thee and the clean shall eat it in like manner, as the doe or the stag.
23 Het bloed moogt ge echter niet nuttigen, maar ge moet het als water op de aarde uitstorten.
Only ye shall not eat the blood; thou shalt pour it out on the earth as water.
