Colossenzen 2
1 Want ik wil, dat gij weet, welke strijd ik heb te voeren, zowel voor u, als voor hen, die in Laodicea wonen, en voor allen, die me persoonlijk niet hebben gekend;
I want you to know how great is my concern for you and those in Laodicea, even all who have not met me personally,
2 opdat hun harten worden getroost, opdat ze, in liefde verenigd, tot de volste rijkdom van inzicht mogen komen: tot de kennis van Gods heilsgeheim, tot de kennis van Christus,
that their hearts may be encouraged, being united in love and into a great wealth of confident understanding, into a real knowledge of the mystery of the God and Father and of the Christ,
3 in wien alle schatten verborgen zijn van wijsheid en kennis.
in whom all the treasures of the wisdom and the knowledge are hidden.
4 Dit zeg ik, opdat niemand u door spitsvondigheden mag misleiden.
Now I say this so that no one may deceive you with specious arguments.
5 Want al ben ik naar het lichaam afwezig, in de geest ben ik bij u, en verheug ik me bij het zien van de goede orde onder u en van uw onwankelbaar geloof in Christus.
For although in fact I am physically absent, yet my spirit is with you, rejoicing as I observe your orderliness and the firmness of your faith in Christ.
6 Zoals gij dus Christus Jesus den Heer hebt aanvaard, moet gij ook in Hem blijven.
So then, keep on walking in the Christ, Jesus the Sovereign, just as you received Him,
7 Blijft op Hem gegrond en opgebouwd; houdt vast aan het geloof, zoals gij het hebt geleerd; weest zeer dankbaar daarvoor
having been rooted and being built up in Him and being established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.
8 Past op, dat niemand u meesleept door de wijsbegeerte of ijdele drogredenen, die op de overlevering der mensen zijn gegrond, of op de leerbeginselen der wereld, maar niet op Christus.
Be careful that no one captures you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the basic principles of the world and not according to Christ.
9 Immers in Hem woont in werkelijkheid de ganse volheid der Godheid;
Because all the Fullness of the Godhead dwells in Him in bodily form,
10 en in gemeenschap met Hem zijt gij aan die volheid deelachtig geworden. Hij is het Hoofd van alle Heerschappijen en Machten.
and you are complete in Him who is the head over all rule and authority.
11 In Hem zijt gij ook besneden met een besnijdenis, die niet met de handen verricht wordt door de verwijdering van het vleselijk lichaam, maar door de besnijdenis van Christus.
In Him you were also ‘circumcised’ by the putting off of the body of the sins of the flesh, not with a circumcision done by hands but with the circumcision of the Christ,
12 Want met Hem zijt gij door het Doopsel begraven, met Hem zijt gij ook verrezen door het geloof in de almacht van God, die Hem uit de doden heeft opgewekt.
having been buried with Him in the baptism. In Him you were also raised together through your faith in the productive power of the God who raised Him from among the dead.
13 Ook u, die dood waart door uw zonden en door uw onbesneden vlees, heeft Hij levend gemaakt tezamen met Hem; Hij heeft ons alle zonden vergeven.
Yes you, though being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh—He has made you alive together with Him; having forgiven us all our trespasses;
14 Het handschrift, dat door zijn bepalingen onze aanklager was, heeft Hij uitgewist en vernietigd, door het te slaan aan het Kruis.
having wiped out the written record about us that was against us (based on the ordinances), indeed He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross;
15 Hij heeft de Heerschappijen en Machten ontmaskerd en openlijk ten toon gesteld, hen door het Kruis overwonnen.
having stripped the principalities and the authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, having triumphed over them by it [the cross].
16 Laat dus niemand u oordelen met betrekking tot spijs en drank, of feestdag, nieuwe maan en sabbat.
So do not let anyone judge you about food or drink, or with respect to a feast day or a new moon or Sabbaths,
17 Deze dingen zijn slechts een schaduwbeeld van de toekomstige dingen, maar de werkelijkheid is van Christus.
which things are but a shadow of those to come, while the body is Christ's.
18 Laat niemand u overbluffen met gewilde nederigheid en engelendienst. Zó iemand maakt zich druk over zijn visioenen, en wordt verwaand door zijn vleselijke gezindheid zonder enige grond;
Nor let anyone disqualify you, taking pleasure in a subservience and devotion to the angels, ‘taking possession’ of things that he has not seen, being puffed up by his carnal mind to no useful purpose,
19 maar hij houdt zich niet vast aan het Hoofd, waaruit het ganse lichaam door gewrichten en vezels gestut en saamgehouden wordt, en opgroeit tot goddelijke rijpheid.
and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, supported and held together by its joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.
20 Indien gij met Christus zijt afgestorven aan de leerbeginselen der wereld, waarom laat gij u dan, als iemand, die in de wereld leeft, allerlei bepalingen voorschrijven, als:
Now then, since you died with Christ away from the basic principles of the world, why, as though still living in it, are you subjecting yourselves to regulations
21 "raak niet aan; proef niet; roer niet aan!"
—Don't handle! Don't taste! Don't touch!—
22 Al dergelijke bepalingen slaan op dingen, die vergaan door het gebruik; het zijn slechts geboden en leringen van mensen!
(all of which result in corruption through overuse) according to the commands and teachings of men?
23 Ze hebben de schijn wel van wijsheid door godzaligheid van eigen vinding, door nederigheid en zelfkastijding, maar ze hebben geen waarde dan voor de bevrediging van het vlees.
Such things do indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and subservience and asceticism, but are not of any value against the indulgence of the flesh.
