Handelingen 6
1 Toen in die dagen het getal der leerlingen steeds maar bleef stijgen, begonnen de hellenisten tegen de hebreën te mopperen, dat hùn weduwen bij de dagelijkse verzorging ten achter werden gesteld.
In those dayes as the nombre of the disciples grewe ther arose a grudge amonge the Grekes agaynst the Ebrues be cause their wyddowes were despysed in the dayly mynystracion.
2 Daarom riep het twaalftal de menigte der leerlingen bijeen, en zeide: Het is niet goed, dat wij het woord Gods verwaarlozen, om aan tafel te dienen.
Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples to gether and sayde: it is not mete that we shuld leave the worde of God and serve at the tables.
3 Kiest dus, broeders, uit uw midden zeven mannen van goede naam, vol van den Geest en van wijsheid. Hen zullen we aanstellen voor deze taak,
Wherfore brethren loke ye out amoge you seven men of honest reporte and full of the holy goost and wysdome which we maye apoynte to this nedfull busynes.
4 terwijl wij zelf zullen voortgaan met het gebed en de dienst van het woord.
But we will geve oure selves cotinually to prayer and to the ministracion of ye worde.
5 Het voorstel vond bijval bij heel de menigte. Men koos Stéfanus uit, een man vol van geloof en van den Heiligen Geest; ook Filippus, Próchorus, Nikanor, Timon, Pármenas, en Nikolaus, een proseliet uit Antiochië.
And the sayinge pleased the whoale multitude. And they chose Steven a man full of fayth and of the holy goost and Philip and Prochorus and Nichanor and Timon and Permenas and Nicholas a converte of Antioche.
6 Men stelde ze aan de apostelen voor; deze baden, en legden hun de handen op.
Which they set before the Apostles and they prayed and layde their hondes on them.
7 En het woord Gods breidde zich uit, en het aantal leerlingen te Jerusalem vermeerderde sterk; ook een groot aantal priesters trad toe tot het geloof.
And the worde of God encreased and the noubre of the disciples multiplied in Ierusalem greatly and a great company of the prestes were obedient to the faythe.
8 Intussen deed Stéfanus, vol genade en kracht, grote wonderen en tekenen onder het volk.
And Steven full of faythe and power dyd great wondres and myracles amoge ye people.
9 Daarom begonnen er sommigen uit de synagoge, welke die der Vrijgelatenen Cyreneërs en Alexandrijnen wordt genoemd, en sommigen uit Cilicië en Azië, met Stéfanus te twisten;
Then ther arose certayne of the synagoge which are called Lybertines and Syrenites and of Alexandria and of Cilicia and Asia and disputed with Steven.
10 maar ze waren niet bestand tegen de wijsheid en den Geest, waarmee hij sprak.
And they coulde not resist the wysdome and the sprete with which he spake.
11 Toen stookten ze enige lieden op, om te verklaren: We hebben hem lastertaal horen spreken tegen Moses en tegen God.
Then sent they in men which sayd: we have hearde him speake blasphemous wordes agaynst Moses and agaynst God.
12 Ze hitsten ook het volk, en de oudsten met de schriftgeleerden tegen hem op, overvielen hem, sleepten hem mee, en brachten hem voor de Hoge Raad.
And they moved ye people and the elders and the scribes: and came apon him and caught him and brought him to the counsell
13 Daar lieten ze valse getuigen komen, die zeiden: Deze man spreekt onophoudelijk tegen de heilige plaats en tegen de Wet;
and brought forth falce witnesses which sayde. This ma ceasith not to speake blasphemous wordes agaynst this holy place and the lawe:
14 want we hebben hem horen zeggen, dat die Jesus van Názaret deze plaats zal verwoesten, en de instellingen wijzigen, die Moses ons heeft overgeleverd.
for we hearde him saye: this Iesus of Nazareth shall destroye this place and shall chaunge the ordinaunces which Moses gave vs.
15 Allen, die in de Raad zaten, staarden hem aan, en aanschouwden zijn gelaat als dat van een engel.
And all that sate in ye counsell loked stedfastly on him and sawe his face as it had bene the face of an angell.
