2 Samuël 24

1 Nog eens ontbrandde de toorn van Jahweh tegen Israël. Daarom zette Hij David tegen hen op. Hij sprak: Ga een volkstelling houden in Israël en Juda.

And the anger of Jehovah addeth to burn against Israel, and [an adversary] moveth David about them, saying, 'Go, number Israel and Judah.'

2 Toen zeide de koning tot Joab en de bevelhebbers van zijn leger: Ge moet onder alle stammen van Israël rondgaan, van Dan af tot Beër-Sjéba, en een volkstelling houden. Ik wil weten, hoe talrijk het volk is.

And the king saith unto Joab, head of the host that [is] with him, 'Go to and fro, I pray thee, through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even unto Beer-Sheba, and inspect ye the people — and I have known the number of the people.'

3 Joab antwoordde den koning: Jahweh, uw God, moge het volk nog honderdmaal talrijker maken, en het mijn heer en koning laten beleven! Maar waarom heeft mijn heer en koning zijn zinnen gezet op een volkstelling?

And Joab saith unto the king, 'Yea, Jehovah thy God doth add unto the people, as they are, a hundred times, and the eyes of my lord the king are seeing; and my lord the king, why is he desirous of this thing?'

4 Daar zij zich echter tegen het bevel van den koning niet konden verzetten, verlieten Joab en de bevelhebbers van de legermacht den koning, om een telling te houden van het volk Israël.

And the word of the king is severe towards Joab, and against the heads of the force, and Joab goeth out, and the heads of the force, [from] before the king to inspect the people, even Israel;

5 Na de Jordaan overgestoken te zijn, begonnen zij met Aroër, en de stad die midden in het dal ligt, en trokken over Gad verder naar Jazer.

and they pass over the Jordan, and encamp in Aroer, on the right of the city that [is] in the midst of the brook of Gad, and unto Jazer,

6 Vervolgens bereikten ze Gilad, daarna Kadesj in het land der Chittieten. Vandaar gingen ze naar Dan, en van Dan ombuigend naar Sidon.

and they come in to Gilead, and unto the land of Tahtim-Hodshi, and they come in to Dan-Jaan, and round about unto Zidon,

7 Vervolgens kwamen ze aan de vesting Tyrus en alle chiwwietische en kanaänietische steden. Tenslotte vertrokken ze naar Beër-Sjéba in de Négeb van Juda.

and they come in to the fortress of Tyre, and all the cities of the Hivite, and of the Canaanite, and go out unto the south of Judah, to Beer-Sheba.

8 Nadat zij zo het gehele land hadden doorkruist, kwamen zij na verloop van negen maanden en twintig dagen in Jerusalem terug.

And they go to and fro through all the land, and come in at the end of nine months and twenty days to Jerusalem,

9 Joab gaf de uitslag van de volkstelling aan den koning op: Israël telde achthonderdduizend weerbare mannen, die het zwaard konden hanteren; het aantal Judeërs bedroeg vijfhonderdduizend man.

and Joab giveth the account of the inspection of the people unto the king, and Israel is eight hundred thousand men of valour, drawing sword, and the men of Judah five hundred thousand men.

10 Maar toen David de volkstelling had laten houden, begon hem het geweten te knagen; en hij zeide tot Jahweh: Ik heb zwaar gezondigd met wat ik gedaan heb! Ach Jahweh, vergeef de zonde van uw dienaar; want ik ben dwaas geweest.

And the heart of David smiteth him, after that he hath numbered the people, and David saith unto Jehovah, 'I have sinned greatly in that which I have done, and now, O Jehovah, cause to pass away, I pray Thee, the iniquity of Thy servant, for I have acted very foolishly.'

11 Nu werd het volgende woord van Jahweh gericht tot den profeet Gad, den ziener van David:

And David riseth in the morning, and the word of Jehovah hath been unto Gad the prophet, seer of David, saying,

12 Ga aan David zeggen: Zo spreekt Jahweh! Drie dingen stel Ik u voor, waar ge uw keus uit kunt doen; daarmee zal Ik u treffen!

'Go, and thou hast spoken unto David, Thus said Jehovah: Three — I am lifting up for thee, choose thee one of them, and I do [it] to thee.'

13 Toen David dan de volgende morgen opstond, begaf Gad zich naar David, bracht hem het woord van Jahweh over, en sprak tot hem: Wilt ge drie jaar lang hongersnood in uw land laten heersen; of wilt ge drie maanden lang vluchten voor uw vijanden, die u op de hielen zitten; of wilt ge drie dagen lang de pest in uw land laten woeden? Bedenk u, en overleg, wat ik moet antwoorden aan Hem, die mij zendt.

And Gad cometh in unto David, and declareth to him, and saith to him, 'Do seven years of famine come in to thee in thy land? or three months art thou fleeing before thine adversary — and he pursuing thee? or are three days' pestilence in thy land? now, know and see what word I take back to Him sending me.'

14 Toen zeide David tot Gad: Ik weet geen raad; maar ik wil toch liever vallen in de hand van Jahweh, wiens barmhartigheid groot is, dan in de hand van mensen! Zo koos David de pest.

And David saith unto Gad, 'I have great distress, let us fall, I pray thee, into the hand of Jehovah, for many [are] His mercies, and into the hand of man let me not fall.'

15 Daarom liet Jahweh van die morgen af tot aan de vastgestelde tijd de pest los op Israël, waardoor van Dan tot Beër-Sjéba zeventigduizend mensen stierven.

And Jehovah giveth a pestilence on Israel from the morning even unto the time appointed, and there die of the people, from Dan even unto Beer-Sheba, seventy thousand men,

16 Ook naar Jerusalem zond Jahweh den engel, om er verderf te stichten. Toen kreeg Jahweh spijt over het onheil, en Hij sprak tot den engel, die onder het volk verderf stichtte: Genoeg nu, trek uw hand terug! De engel van Jahweh bevond zich toen nabij de dorsvloer van Arawna, den Jeboesiet.

and the messenger putteth forth his hand to Jerusalem to destroy it, and Jehovah repenteth concerning the evil, and saith to the messenger who is destroying among the people, 'Enough, now, cease thy hand;' and the messenger of Jehovah was near the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

17 En bij het zien van den engel die het volk sloeg, sprak David tot Jahweh: Ach Heer, ik heb gezondigd, ik deed verkeerd; maar wat hebben deze schapen voor schuld? Keer liever uw hand tegen mij en tegen het huis van mijn vader!

And David speaketh unto Jehovah, when he seeth the messenger who is smiting among the people, and saith, 'Lo, I have sinned, yea, I have done perversely; and these — the flock — what have they done? Let, I pray Thee, Thy hand be on me, and on the house of my father.'

18 Nog diezelfde dag ging Gad naar David en sprak tot hem: Ga voor Jahweh een altaar oprichten op de dorsvloer van Arawna, den Jeboesiet.

And Gad cometh in unto David on that day, and saith to him, 'Go up, raise to Jehovah an altar in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite;'

19 Op het woord van Gad ging David op weg, zoals Jahweh het bevolen had.

and David goeth up, according to the word of Gad, as Jehovah commanded.

20 Toen Arawna, die juist aan het dorsen was, rondkeek en den koning met zijn gevolg naar hem toe zag komen, trad hij vooruit en boog zich voor den koning neer tot op de grond.

And Araunah looketh, and seeth the king and his servants passing over unto him, and Araunah goeth out and boweth himself to the king — his face to the earth.

21 Arawna vroeg: Met welk doel is mijn heer en koning bij zijn dienaar gekomen? David antwoordde: Om van u de dorsvloer te kopen en een altaar voor Jahweh te bouwen, opdat de plaag van het volk moge wijken.

And Araunah saith, 'Wherefore hath my lord the king come unto his servant?' and David saith, 'To buy from thee the threshing-floor, to build an altar to Jehovah, and the plague is restrained from the people.'

22 Nu sprak Arawna tot David: Laat mijn heer en koning nemen en offeren wat hem goeddunkt! Daar staan de runderen voor het brandoffer, en de dorssleden en jukken kunnen voor brandhout dienen;

And Araunah saith unto David, 'Let my lord the king take and cause to ascend that which is good in his eyes; see, the oxen for a burnt-offering, and the threshing instruments, and the instruments of the oxen, for wood;'

23 dit alles, o koning, geeft Arawna den koning om niet. En Arawna besloot: Moge Jahweh, uw God, u welgevallig zijn!

the whole hath Araunah given, [as] a king to a king; and Araunah saith unto the king, 'Jehovah thy God doth accept thee.'

24 Maar de koning sprak tot Arawna: Neen, kópen wil ik het van u, en wel voor de volle prijs; ook wil ik aan Jahweh, mijn God, geen offers opdragen, die mij niets kosten. Zo kocht David de dorsvloer en de runderen voor vijftig zilveren sikkels.

And the king saith unto Araunah, 'Nay, for I do surely buy from thee for a price, and I do not cause to ascend to Jehovah my God burnt-offerings for nought;' and David buyeth the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver,

25 Hij liet daar een altaar voor Jahweh oprichten; en toen hij brand- en vredeoffers had opgedragen, erbarmde Jahweh Zich over het land, en de plaag week van Israël.

and David buildeth there an altar to Jehovah, and causeth to ascend burnt-offerings and peace-offerings, and Jehovah is entreated for the land, and the plague is restrained from Israel.
