2 Koningen 19
1 Toen koning Ezekias dit hoorde, scheurde hij zijn klederen, sloeg het boetekleed om, en ging naar de tempel van Jahweh.
And it cometh to pass, at king Hezekiah's hearing, that he rendeth his garments, and covereth himself with sackcloth, and entereth the house of Jehovah,
2 Tegelijkertijd zond hij Eljakim, den hofmaarschalk, met den schrijver Sjebna en de oudsten der priesters, in boeteklederen gehuld, naar den profeet Isaias, den zoon van Amos.
and sendeth Eliakim, who [is] over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covering themselves with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet, son of Amoz,
3 Ze moesten hem zeggen: Dit zegt Ezekias! Deze dag is een dag van benauwing, van straf en van smaad; de kinderen openen de moederschoot al, maar de kracht om te baren ontbreekt.
and they say unto him, 'Thus said Hezekiah — A day of distress, and rebuke, and despising [is] this day; for come have sons unto the birth, and power there is not to bring forth.
4 Maar wellicht heeft Jahweh, uw God, acht geslagen op de woorden van den opperbevelhebber, die door zijn heer, den koning van Assjoer, gezonden werd, om den levenden God te honen, en straft Jahweh, uw God, hem om de woorden die Hij gehoord heeft. Zend dus een bede omhoog voor het overschot, dat er nog is!
'It may be Jehovah thy God doth hear all the words of the chief of the butlers with which the king of Asshur his lord hath sent him to reproach the living God, and hath decided concerning the words that Jehovah thy God hath heard, and thou hast lifted up prayer for the remnant that is found.'
5 Toen dan de dienaren van koning Ezekias bij Isaias waren gekomen,
And the servants of king Hezekiah come in unto Isaiah,
6 sprak Isaias tot hen: Dit moet ge tot uw meester zeggen: Zo spreekt Jahweh! Wees niet bang voor de woorden, die gij gehoord hebt, en waarmee de knechten van den assyrischen koning Mij hebben gehoond.
and Isaiah saith to them, 'Thus do ye say unto your lord: Thus said Jehovah, Be not afraid because of the words that thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Asshur have reviled Me.
7 Zie, Ik zal een geest in hem zenden, waardoor hij terugkeert naar zijn land, zodra hij geruchten verneemt; en in zijn land zal Ik hem door het zwaard doen vallen!
Lo, I am giving in him a spirit, and he hath heard a report, and hath turned back to his land, and I have caused him to fall by the sword in his land.'
8 De opperbevelhebber keerde nu naar den koning van Assjoer terug. En daar hij vernomen had, dat deze Lakisj al had verlaten, trof hij hem bij Libna aan, dat juist door hem belegerd werd.
And the chief of the butlers turneth back and findeth the king of Asshur fighting against Libnah, for he hath heard that he hath journeyed from Lachish.
9 En toen deze hoorde: "Tirháka, de koning van Koesj, is tegen u ten strijde getrokken," zond hij opnieuw gezanten naar Ezekias met de volgende opdracht:
And he heareth concerning Tirhakah king of Cush, saying, 'Lo, he hath come out to fight with thee;' and he turneth and sendeth messengers unto Hezekiah, saying,
10 Zegt dit aan Ezekias, den koning van Juda: Laat uw God, op wien gij vertrouwt, u niet bedriegen en zeggen: Jerusalem zal niet worden overgeleverd aan den assyrischen koning.
'Thus do ye speak unto Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God lift thee up in whom thou art trusting, saying, Jerusalem is not given into the hand of the king of Asshur.
11 Zie, ge hebt toch gehoord, dat de koningen van Assjoer alle landen ten ondergang hebben gedoemd; en zoudt gij dan ontsnappen?
Lo, thou hast heard that which the kings of Asshur have done to all the lands — to devote them; and thou art delivered!
12 Hebben de goden de volkeren gered, die door mijn vaderen werden vernield: Gozan, Charan, Résef, en de bewoners van Éden in Telassar?
did the gods of the nations deliver them whom my fathers destroyed — Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the sons of Eden, who [are] in Thelassar?
13 Waar is de koning van Chamat gebleven, en de koning van Arpad, de koning van Sefarwáim, Hena en Iwwa?
Where [is] the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah?'
14 Toen Ezekias van de gezanten de brief had ontvangen, en hem had gelezen, ging hij naar de tempel, legde hem open voor Jahweh neer,
And Hezekiah taketh the letters out of the hand of the messengers, and readeth them, and goeth up to the house of Jehovah, and Hezekiah spreadeth it before Jehovah.
15 en bad tot Jahweh: Jahweh, Israëls God, die op de cherubs troont; Gij alleen zijt God over alle koninkrijken der aarde; Gij hebt hemel en aarde geschapen!
And Hezekiah prayeth before Jehovah, and saith, 'O Jehovah, God of Israel, inhabiting the cherubs, Thou [art] God Himself — Thyself alone — to all the kingdoms of the earth: Thou hast made the heavens and the earth.
16 Ach Jahweh, neig toch uw oor, en luister; open uw ogen, o Jahweh, en zie: Verneem, wat Sinacherib mij gemeld heeft, om den levenden God te honen.
Incline, O Jehovah, Thine ear, and hear; open, O Jehovah, Thine eyes, and see; and hear Thou the words of Sennacherib with which he hath sent him to reproach the living God.
17 Ach Jahweh, het is waar: de koningen van Assjoer hebben de volkeren met hun landen verwoest.
'Truly, O Jehovah, kings of Asshur have laid waste the nations, and their land,
18 Ze hebben ook hun goden in het vuur geworpen en vernield; want ze waren geen god, maar enkel het werk van mensenhanden, van hout en van steen.
and have put their gods into fire, for they [are] no gods, but work of the hands of man, wood and stone, and destroy them.
19 Ach Jahweh, onze God, red ons nu uit zijn handen, opdat alle koninkrijken der aarde erkennen, dat Gij alleen God zijt, o Jahweh!
And now, O Jehovah our God, save us, we pray Thee, out of his hand, and know do all kingdoms of the earth that Thou [art] Jehovah God — Thyself alone.'
20 Toen liet Isaias, de zoon van Amos, aan Ezekias zeggen: Dit zegt Jahweh, Israëls God! Ik heb de bede gehoord, die gij tot Mij hebt opgezonden om Sinacherib, den assyrischen koning.
And Isaiah son of Amoz sendeth unto Hezekiah, saying, 'Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed unto Me concerning Sennacherib king of Asshur I have heard:
21 Dit is het woord, dat Jahweh tegen hem gesproken heeft: Ze veracht en bespot u, De jonkvrouw, de dochter van Sion; Meewarig schudt ze het hoofd achter u, Jerusalems dochter!
this [is] the word that Jehovah spake concerning him: 'Trampled on thee — laughed at thee, Hath the virgin daughter of Zion Behind thee shaken the head — Hath the daughter of Jerusalem?
22 Wien hebt ge gehoond en beschimpt, Tegen wien een hoge toon aangeslagen. En uw trotse blikken geheven? Tegen Israëls Heilige!
Whom hast thou reproached and reviled? And against whom lifted up a voice? Yea, thou dost lift up on high thine eyes — Against the Holy One of Israel!
23 Door uw boden hebt ge den Heer gehoond, En gezegd: Met mijn tallooze wagens Heb ik de toppen der bergen bestegen, En de flanken van de Libanon. Ik heb zijn rijzige ceders geveld, En zijn schoonste cypressen; Zijn hoogste toppen bereikt, Zijn dichtste wouden.
By the hand of thy messengers Thou hast reproached the Lord, and sayest: In the multitude of my chariots I have come up to a high place of mountains — The sides of Lebanon, And I cut down the height of its cedars, The choice of its firs, And I enter the lodging of its extremity, The forest of its Carmel.
24 Ik heb geboord en gedronken De wateren van vreemde landen, En opgedroogd met de zool van mijn voeten Alle stromen van Masor.
I have digged, and drunk strange waters, And I dry up with the sole of my steps All floods of a bulwark.
25 Hebt ge dan niet vernomen, Hoe Ik dit vroeger al had beschikt? Wat Ik al lang had besloten, Heb Ik thans in vervulling doen gaan. Tot puinhopen moesten Versterkte steden worden verwoest;
Hast thou not heard from afar, it I made, From days of old that I formed it? Now I have brought it in, And it becometh a desolation, Ruinous heaps [are] fenced cities,
26 Haar bewoners machteloos zijn, Verschrikt en beschaamd. Ze moesten zijn als kruid op het veld, Als tengere planten; Als gras op het dak, Dat verdort, eer het opschiet.
And their inhabitants [are] feeble-handed, They were broken down, and are dried up, They have been the herb of the field, And the greenness of the tender grass, Grass of the roofs, And blasted corn — before it hath risen up!
27 Maar Ik ken uw opstaan en zitten, Uw gaan en uw komen;
And thy sitting down, and thy going out, And thy coming in, I have known, And thine anger towards Me;
28 Uw razen steeg tot Mij op, Uw tieren kwam Mij ter ore. Daarom sla Ik mijn ring door uw neus, Leg mijn toom aan uw lippen; En voer u terug langs de weg, Die gij kwaamt.
Because of thine anger towards Me, And thy noise — it came up into Mine ears, I have put My hook in thy nose, And My bridle in thy lips, And have caused thee to turn back, In the way in which thou camest.
29 En dit is het teken voor u: Dit jaar zult ge nog nawas eten, Het volgend jaar wat er groeit in het wild; Maar in het derde jaar zult ge zaaien en oogsten, Wijngaarden planten en de vrucht er van eten.
And this to thee [is] the sign, Food of the year [is] the spontaneous growth, And in the second year the self-produced, And in the third year sow ye, and reap, And plant vineyards, and eat their fruits.
30 Wat er van u overblijft, En wat er van het huis van Juda nog rest. Zal wortel schieten naar omlaag, En vruchten dragen naar boven.
And it hath continued — The escaped of the house of Judah That hath been left — to take root beneath, And hath made fruit upward.
31 Want de Rest zal zich uit Jerusalem verspreiden, Wat er overbleef uit de Sion; De ijver van Jahweh der heerscharen Brengt het tot stand!
For from Jerusalem goeth out a remnant, And an escape from mount Zion; The zeal of Jehovah [of Hosts] doth this.
32 Daarom spreekt Jahweh over den koning van Assjoer: Hij zal deze stad niet binnen komen, Geen pijl er op afschieten; Met geen schild ze bestormen, Met geen wal ze omringen.
Therefore, thus said Jehovah, Concerning the king of Asshur: He doth not come in unto this city, Nor doth he shoot there an arrow, Nor doth he come before it with shield. Nor doth he pour out against it a mount.
33 Hij keert terug langs de weg, die hij kwam; Deze stad komt hij niet binnen, zegt Jahweh!
In the way that he cometh in — In it he turneth back, And unto this city he doth not come in, The affirmation of Jehovah —
34 Ik zal deze stad beschutten en redden Terwille van Mij, en van David, mijn dienaar!
And I have covered over this city, To save it, for Mine own sake, And for the sake of David My servant.'
35 Nog dezelfde nacht ging de engel van Jahweh uit en doodde in het assyrische leger honderd vijf en tachtig duizend man; ‘s morgens bij het ontwaken zag men enkel nog lijken.
And it cometh to pass, in that night, that a messenger of Jehovah goeth out, and smiteth in the camp of Asshur a hundred eighty and five thousand, and they rise early in the morning, and lo, all of them [are] dead corpses.
36 Nu brak Sinacherib, de koning van Assjoer, op, nam de terugtocht en bleef in Ninive.
And Sennacherib king of Asshur journeyeth, and goeth, and turneth back, and dwelleth in Nineveh;
37 En toen hij eens aan het bidden was in de tempel van Nisrok, zijn god, werd hij met het zwaard doorstoken door zijn zonen Adrammélek en Saréser, die naar het land Ararat vluchtten. Zijn zoon Ésar-Chaddon volgde hem op.
and it cometh to pass, he is bowing himself in the house of Nisroch his god, and Adramelech and Sharezar [his sons] have smitten him with the sword, and they have escaped to the land of Ararat, and Esar-Haddon his son reigneth in his stead.
