1 Thessalonicenzen 3

1 Daar we het dus niet langer meer konden uithouden, gaven we er de voorkeur aan, alleen in Athene achter te blijven,

So when we could endure it no longer, we decided to remain behind in Athens alone;

2 en zonden we Timóteus, onzen broeder en Gods dienaar in het Evangelie van Christus, om u te versterken, en u te bemoedigen in uw geloof,

and sent Timothy our brother and God's minister in the service of Christ's Good News, that he might help you spiritually and encourage you in your faith;

3 opdat niemand door deze wederwaardigheden aan het wankelen zou worden gebracht. Zelf weet gij toch wel, dat dergelijke dingen ons te wachten staan;

that none of you might be unnerved by your present trials: for you yourselves know that they are our appointed lot.

4 bovendien hebben we, toen we bij u waren, u toch vooruit gezegd, dat we wederwaardigheden zouden te verduren hebben; en zo is het ook gebeurd, als gij weet.

For even when we were with you, we forewarned you, saying, "We are soon to suffer affliction;" and this actually happened, as you well know.

5 Omdat ik het dus niet langer meer uithield, heb ik er hem op afgezonden, om te weten, hoe het staat met uw geloof: de bekoorder mocht u eens hebben verleid, en onze arbeid vergeefs zijn geweest.

For this reason I also, when I could no longer endure the uncertainty, sent to know the condition of your faith, lest perchance the Tempter might have tempted you and our labour have been lost.

6 Zo juist is Timóteus van u teruggekeerd, en heeft ons goede tijding gebracht van uw geloof en van uw liefde tot ons, en hoe gij steeds een goede herinnering aan ons bewaart en vurig verlangt, ons weer te zien, zoals wij u.

But now that Timothy has recently come back to us from you, and has brought us the happy tidings of your faith and love, and has told us how you still cherish a constant and affectionate recollection of us, and are longing to see us as we also long to see you--

7 Daarom broeders, zijn we bij al onze nood en druk door uw geloof met troost over u vervuld;

for this reason in our distress and trouble we have been comforted about you, brethren, by your faith.

8 want nu leven we op, zo gij maar vast staat in den Heer.

For now life is for us life indeed, since you are standing fast in the Lord.

9 Hoe kunnen we God genoeg om u danken voor al de vreugde, waarmee we ons over u verblijden voor het aanschijn van onzen God.

For what thanksgiving on your behalf can we possibly offer to God in return for all the joy which fills our souls before our God for you,

10 Vurig bidden we nacht en dag, om u te mogen weerzien, en de leemten aan te vullen in uw geloof.

while night and day, with intense earnestness, we pray that we may see your faces, and may bring to perfection whatever may be still lacking in your faith?

11 Moge dan onze God en Vader zelf en onze Heer Jesus òns de weg naar u banen;

But may our God and Father Himself--and our Lord Jesus--guide us on our way to you;

12 moge de Heer ú echter vervullen en doen overvloeien van liefde tot elkander en tot iedereen, zoals wij ze hebben tot u.

and as for you, may the Lord teach you to love one another and all men, with a growing and a glowing love, resembling our love for you.

13 Zo make Hij uw harten sterk en onberispelijk in heiligheid voor het aanschijn van God, onzen Vader, bij de komst van onzen Heer Jesus, met al zijn heiligen.

Thus He will build up your characters, so that you will be faultlessly holy in the presence of our God and Father at the Coming of our Lord Jesus with all His holy ones.
