1 Samuël 7
1 Toen kwamen de inwoners van Kirjat-Jearim de ark van Jahweh halen; ze brachten haar in het huis van Abinadab op de heuvel, en wijdden zijn zoon Elazar, om de ark van Jahweh te bewaken.
And the men of Kirjath-Jearim come and bring up the Ark of YHWH, and bring it into the house of Abinadab, in the height, and they have sanctified his son Eleazar to keep the Ark of YHWH.
2 Er verliep een geruime tijd, wel twintig jaar, sinds de ark in Kirjat-Jearim een plaats had gevonden. Toen nam heel het huis Israël zijn toevlucht tot Jahweh.
And it comes to pass, from the day of the dwelling of the Ark in Kirjath-Jearim, that the days are multiplied—indeed, they are twenty years—and all the house of Israel wails after YHWH.
3 En Samuël sprak tot heel het huis Israël: Indien gij u met geheel uw hart tot Jahweh wilt bekeren, moet gij de vreemde goden, de Báals en de Asjtarten uit uw midden verwijderen, uw hart op Jahweh richten en Hem alleen dienen; dan zal Hij u uit de macht der Filistijnen bevrijden.
And Samuel speaks to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you are turning back to YHWH with all your heart—turn aside the gods of the stranger from your midst, and Ashtaroth; and prepare your heart for YHWH, and serve Him only, and He delivers you out of the hand of the Philistines.”
4 Inderdaad verwijderden de Israëlieten de Báals en de Asjtarten, en dienden Jahweh alleen.
And the sons of Israel turn aside the Ba‘alim and Ashtaroth, and serve YHWH alone;
5 Nu sprak Samuël: Laat heel Israël bijeenkomen in Mispa; dan zal ik voor u tot Jahweh bidden.
and Samuel says, “Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I pray to YHWH for you.”
6 Zo kwamen ze bijeen in Mispa, schepten water en goten het uit voor het aanschijn van Jahweh, vastten die dag en beleden daar: Wij hebben tegen Jahweh gezondigd! Zo richtte Samuël de Israëlieten te Mispa.
And they are gathered to Mizpeh, and draw water, and pour out before YHWH, and fast on that day, and say there, “We have sinned against YHWH”; and Samuel judges the sons of Israel in Mizpeh.
7 Toen de Filistijnen hoorden, dat de Israëlieten in Mispa bijeenwaren, trokken de Filistijnse tyrannen tegen Israël op. De Israëlieten vernamen het, en werden bevreesd voor de Filistijnen.
And the Philistines hear that the sons of Israel have gathered themselves to Mizpeh; and the princes of the Philistines go up against Israel, and the sons of Israel hear, and are afraid of the presence of the Philistines.
8 En de Israëlieten zeiden tot Samuël: Houd niet op, voor ons tot Jahweh onzen God te bidden, dat Hij ons uit de macht der Filistijnen bevrijde.
And the sons of Israel say to Samuel, “Do not keep silent for us from crying to our God YHWH, and He saves us out of the hand of the Philistines.”
9 En Samuël nam een leplammetje, en terwijl hij dat als een brandoffer aan Jahweh opdroeg, bad hij voor Israël tot Jahweh. En Jahweh verhoorde hem.
And Samuel takes a fat lamb, and causes it to go up—a whole burnt-offering to YHWH; and Samuel cries to YHWH for Israel, and YHWH answers him;
10 Nog was Samuël bezig, het brandoffer op te dragen, toen de Filistijnen Israël begonnen aan te vallen. Maar Jahweh liet die dag tegen de Filistijnen zijn donder kraken, en bracht ze in verwarring, zodat ze door Israël werden verslagen.
and Samuel is causing the burnt-offering to go up—and the Philistines have drawn near to battle against Israel—and YHWH thunders with a great noise, on that day, on the Philistines, and troubles them, and they are struck before Israel.
11 De krijgslieden van Israël zetten uit Mispa de Filistijnen achterna, en hakten tot onder Bet-Kar op hen in.
And the men of Israel go out from Mizpeh, and pursue the Philistines, and strike them to the place of Beth-Car.
12 Toen nam Samuël een steen, plaatste die halverwege tussen Mispa en Sjen, noemden hem: Ében-Haézer, en sprak: "Tot hier toe heeft Jahweh ons geholpen."
And Samuel takes a stone, and sets [it] between Mizpeh and Shen, and calls its name Eben-Ezer, saying, “Until now YHWH has helped us.”
13 Zo werden de Filistijnen vernederd en waagden het niet meer, het gebied van Israël binnen te vallen. En zolang Samuël leefde, bleef de hand van Jahweh op de Filistijnen drukken.
And the Philistines are humbled, and have not added anymore to come into the border of Israel, and the hand of YHWH is on the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
14 Ook de steden, die de Filistijnen op Israël veroverd hadden, kwamen aan Israël terug; zowel Ekron als Gat met hun omgeving bevrijdde Israël uit de macht der Filistijnen. Ook tussen Israël en de Amorieten bleef het vrede.
And the cities which the Philistines have taken from Israel are restored to Israel—from Ekron even to Gath—and Israel has delivered their border out of the hand of the Philistines; and there is peace between Israel and the Amorite.
15 Samuël richtte Israël zolang hij leefde.
And Samuel judges Israel all the days of his life,
16 Elk jaar maakte hij een rondreis over Betel en Gilgal en Mispa, en op al die plaatsen sprak hij recht over Israël.
and he has gone from year to year, and gone around Beth-El, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel [in] all these places;
17 Dan keerde hij weer naar Rama terug, want daar stond zijn huis. Daar richtte hij Israël, en bouwde er een altaar voor Jahweh.
and his returning [is] to Ramath, for his house [is] there, and he has judged Israel there, and he builds an altar to YHWH there.
