1 Samuël 31
1 Intussen waren de Filistijnen de strijd tegen Israël begonnen. De Israëlieten sloegen voor de Filistijnen op de vlucht en vielen dodelijk getroffen op het gebergte van Gilbóa.
And the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain on mount Gilboa.
2 De Filistijnen zaten Saul en zijn zonen op de hielen. En toen zij Jonatan, Abinadab en Malkisjóea, de zonen van Saul, hadden gedood,
And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines smote Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul's sons.
3 richtte zich heel de strijd tegen Saul. Enige boogschutters kregen hem onder schot, en verwondden hem in het onderlijf.
And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers came up with him; and he was much terrified by the archers.
4 Nu sprak Saul tot zijn wapendrager: Trek uw zwaard en doorsteek me ermee; anders komen die onbesnedenen hun spel met me drijven. Maar zijn wapendrager wilde niet, omdat hij teveel ontzag voor hem had. Daarom nam Saul het zwaard, en stortte zich erin.
Then said Saul to his armour-bearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through with it; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armour-bearer would not; for he was much afraid. So Saul took the sword and fell on it.
5 Toen zijn wapendrager zag, dat Saul dood was, stortte ook hij zich in zijn zwaard, en stierf aan zijn zijde.
And when his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on his sword, and died with him.
6 Zo stierf Saul met zijn drie zonen en zijn wapendrager op een en dezelfde dag.
So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armour-bearer, and all his men, that same day together.
7 Toen de Israëlieten, die in de steden van het dal en van het Overjordaanse woonden, bemerkten, dat de Israëlieten waren gevlucht en Saul met zijn zonen gestorven, verlieten zij de steden en namen de vlucht; waarop de Filistijnen kwamen en ze bezetten.
And when the men of Israel that were on this side of the valley, and [they] that were on this side of the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8 Toen de Filistijnen de volgende dag de gesneuvelden kwamen uitplunderen, vonden ze Saul met zijn drie zonen op het gebergte van Gilbóa liggen.
And it came to pass the next day, that the Philistines came to strip the slain, and they found Saul and his three sons fallen on mount Gilboa.
9 Ze sloegen hem het hoofd af, trokken hem zijn wapenrusting uit, en zonden boden rond in het Filistijnenland, om het blijde nieuws in hun afgodstempels en onder het volk te verspreiden.
And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent [them] into the land of the Philistines round about, to announce the glad tidings in the houses of their idols, and to the people.
10 Ze plaatsten zijn wapenrusting in de tempel van Asjtarte, en sloegen zijn lijk aan de muur van Bet-Sjean.
And they put his armour in the house of Ashtaroth; and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.
11 Toen de bewoners van Jabesj in Gilad hoorden, wat de Filistijnen met Saul gedaan hadden,
And when the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead heard of what the Philistines had done to Saul,
12 rukten alle weerbare mannen uit. Ze trokken de gehele nacht door, haalden Sauls lijk en dat van zijn drie zonen van de muur van Bet-Sjean, brachten ze naar Jabesj over en verbrandden ze daar.
all the valiant men arose and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and came to Jabesh, and burned them there.
13 Ze verzamelden het gebeente, en begroeven het onder de terebint in Jabesj; daarna vastten ze zeven dagen.
And they took their bones, and buried them under the tamarisk at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
