1 Corinthiërs 12
1 Wat de Geestesgaven betreft, broeders, wil ik u niet in het onzekere laten;
In the next place, friends, I do not want you to be ignorant about spiritual gifts.
2 gij weet het, toen gij heidenen waart, was het blindelings, dat gij naar de stomme afgoden werdt heengedreven.
You know that there was a time when you were Gentiles, going astray after idols that could not speak, just as you happened to be led.
3 Daarom maak ik u bekend, dat niemand, die spreekt door Gods Geest, zegt: "Vervloekt zij Jesus;" en dat niemand zeggen kan: "Heer Jesus," dan door den heiligen Geest.
Therefore I tell you plainly that no one who speaks under the influence of the Spirit of God says “JESUS IS ACCURSED,” and that no one can say “JESUS IS LORD,” except under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
4 Welnu, er is verscheidenheid van genadegaven, maar er is slechts één Geest;
Gifts differ, but the Spirit is the same;
5 en verscheidenheid van bedieningen, maar slechts één Heer;
ways of serving differ, yet the Master is the same;
6 en verscheidenheid van werkingen, maar slechts één God, die alles in allen werkt.
results differ, yet the God who brings about every result is in every case the same.
7 En aan een ieder wordt de Geestesuiting geschonken, om er nut mee te stichten.
To each of us there is given spiritual illumination for the general good.
8 Den één wordt het woord der wijsheid gegeven door den Geest, den ander het woord der kennis door denzelfden Geest,
To one is given the power to speak with wisdom through the Spirit; to another the power to speak with knowledge, due to the same Spirit;
9 een ander het geloof door denzelfden Geest, een ander de gaven der genezing door den énen Geest.
to another faith by the same Spirit; to another power to cure diseases by the one Spirit; to another supernatural powers;
10 Aan anderen weer het werken van wonderen, of de profetie, of de onderscheiding der geesten, of de veelheid van talen, of de vertolking der talen;
to another the gift of preaching; to another the gift of distinguishing between true and false inspiration; to another varieties of the gift of “tongues”; to another the power to interpret “tongues.”
11 maar dit alles werkt één en dezelfde Geest, die ieder toedeelt, zoals het Hem goeddunkt.
All these result from one and the same Spirit, who distributes his gifts to each individually as he wills.
12 Want zoals het lichaam één is, ofschoon het veel leden heeft, en van de andere kant al de leden van het lichaam, hoe talrijk ook, één lichaam vormen, zo ook Christus.
For just as the human body is one whole, and yet has many parts, and all its parts, many though they are, form but one body, so it is with the Christ;
13 Allen toch, Joden of heidenen, slaven of vrijen, allen zijn we in één Geest tot één lichaam gedoopt, en allen zijn we met één Geest gedrenkt.
for it was by one Spirit that we were all baptised to form one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free, and were all imbued with one Spirit.
14 Want ook het lichaam bestaat niet uit één lid, maar uit meerdere leden.
The human body, I repeat, consists not of one part, but of many.
15 Al zei de voet: omdat ik geen hand ben, behoor ik niet tot het lichaam; toch behoort hij tot het lichaam.
If the foot says “Since I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it does not because of that cease to belong to the body.
16 En al zei het oor: omdat ik geen oog ben, behoor ik niet tot het lichaam; toch behoort het tot het lichaam.
Or if the ear says “Since I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it does not because of that cease to belong to the body.
17 Zo het lichaam één en al oog was, waar bleef het gehoor; was het één en al gehoor, waar bleef dan de reuk?
If all the body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If it were all hearing, where would the sense of smell be?
18 Maar in werkelijkheid heeft God de leden, elk in het bijzonder, een plaats in het lichaam gegeven, zoals het Hem heeft behaagd.
But in fact God has placed each individual part just where he thought fit in the body.
19 En van de andere kant, zo alle nu eens één lid vormden, waar bleef dan het lichaam?
If, however, they all made up only one part, where would the body be?
20 Maar in werkelijkheid zijn er veel leden, doch slechts één lichaam.
But in fact, although it has many parts, there is only one body.
21 Het oog kan niet tot de hand zeggen: Ik heb u niet nodig; het hoofd niet tot de voeten: Ik heb u niet nodig.
The eye cannot say to the hand “I do not need you,” nor, again, the head to the feet “I do not need you.”
22 Integendeel, juist de schijnbaar zwakkere leden van het lichaam zijn het meest noodzakelijk;
No! Those parts of the body that seem naturally the weaker are indispensable;
23 wat ons in het lichaam minder edel toeschijnt, bekleden we met meer luister; en juist onze oneerbare ledematen ontvangen groter kiesheid;
and those parts which we deem less honourable we surround with special honour; and our ungraceful parts receive a special grace which our graceful parts do not require.
24 onze eerbare leden hebben dat niet nodig. Ja, God heeft het lichaam zó samengesteld, dat Hij groter eer gaf aan wat misdeeld is,
Yes, God has so constructed the body – by giving a special honour to the part that lacks it –
25 opdat er in het lichaam geen tweedracht zou heersen, maar de leden gelijke zorg voor elkaar zouden dragen.
As to secure that there should be no disunion in the body, but that the parts should show the same care for one another.
26 En wanneer één lid lijdt, lijden alle leden mee; komt één lid in aanzien, alle leden delen in zijn vreugde.
If one part suffers, all the others suffer with it, and if one part has honour done to it, all the others share its joy.
27 Welnu, gij zijt het lichaam van Christus, en ieder in het bijzonder zijn leden.
Together you are the body of Christ, and individually its parts.
28 En in de Kerk heeft God den één aangesteld tot apostel, een ander tot profeet, een derde tot leraar; dan komen de wonderen, dan de gaven der genezing, hulpbetoon, bestuur, de veelheid van talen.
In the church God has appointed, first, apostles, secondly preachers, thirdly teachers; then he has given supernatural powers, then power to cure diseases, aptness for helping others, capacity to govern, varieties of the gift of “tongues.”
29 Zijn allen soms apostelen? Allen profeten? Allen leraars?
Can everyone be an apostle? Can everyone be a preacher? Can everyone be a teacher? Can everyone have supernatural powers?
30 Hebben allen de wondermacht, allen de gaven der genezing? Spreken allen in talen, vertolken allen?
Can everyone have power to cure diseases? Can everyone speak in “tongues”? Can everyone interpret them?
31 Gij hunkert naar de hoogste gaven? Ik wijs u een weg, die nog veel hoger ligt.
Strive for the greater gifts. Yet I can still show you a way beyond all comparison the best.
