1 Toen kwam heel Israël tot David in Hebron en zeide: Zie, wij zijn uw vlees en bloed!

And gathered are all Israel unto David to Hebron, saying, 'Lo, thy bone and thy flesh [are] we;

2 Reeds vroeger, toen Saul nog koning was, waart gij het, die Israël te velde deedt trekken en terugbracht. En tot u heeft Jahweh, uw God, gezegd: "Gij zult mijn volk Israël weiden; gij zult de leider van mijn volk Israël zijn!"

even in time past, even in Saul's being king, it is thou who art taking out and bringing in Israel, and Jehovah thy God saith to thee: Thou dost feed My people Israel, and thou art leader over My people Israel.'

3 Toen alle oudsten van Israël dus bij den koning in Hebron gekomen waren, sloot David met hen in Hebron een verbond voor het aanschijn van Jahweh, en werd David door hen tot koning over Israël gezalfd, juist zoals Jahweh door Samuël had voorspeld.

And all the elders of Israel come in unto the king to Hebron, and David maketh with them a covenant in Hebron before Jehovah, and they anoint David for king over Israel, according to the word of Jehovah by the hand of Samuel.

4 Nu trok David met heel Israël naar Jerusalem op, dat wil zeggen: Jeboes, waar de Jeboesieten woonden, de inheemse bevolking.

And David goeth, and all Israel, to Jerusalem — it [is] Jebus — and there the Jebusite, the inhabitants of the land.

5 De bewoners van Jeboes riepen tot David: Hier komt ge niet binnen! Maar David veroverde de Sionsvesting, de zogenaamde Davidstad.

And the inhabitants of Jebus say to David, 'Thou dost not come in hither;' and David captureth the fortress of Zion — it [is] the city of David.

6 Bij die gelegenheid sprak David: Wie het eerst een Jeboesiet neerslaat, wordt opperste bevelhebber. En Joab was het, de zoon van Seroeja, die het eerst naar boven kroop, en bevelhebber werd.

And David saith, 'Whoever smiteth the Jebusite first doth become head and prince;' and go up first doth Joab son of Zeruiah and becometh head.

7 Daarna vestigde David zich in de vesting, die hij Davidstad noemde,

And David dwelleth in the fortress, therefore they have called it, 'City of David;'

8 en hij bouwde de stad in heel haar omvang van het Millo af tot aan het paleis. De rest van de stad werd door Joab gerestaureerd.

and he buildeth the city round about, from Millo, and unto the circumference, and Joab restoreth the rest of the city.

9 Zo werd David hoe langer hoe machtiger, daar Jahweh der heirscharen met hem was.

And David goeth, going on and becoming great, and Jehovah of Hosts [is] with him.

10 Hier volgen de aanvoerders van Davids helden, die zich verdienstelijk maakten voor zijn heerschappij over heel Israël, en hem hielpen koning te worden van Israël, naar het woord van Jahweh.

And these [are] heads of the mighty ones whom David hath, who are strengthening themselves with him in his kingdom, with all Israel, to cause him to reign, according to the word of Jehovah, over Israel.

11 Hier volgt dus een op somming van Davids helden. Jasjobam, de zoon van Chakmoni, was de aanvoerder der Drie. Hij zwaaide zijn lans tegen driehonderd man, die hij in één keer versloeg.

And this [is] an account of the mighty ones whom David hath: Jashobeam son of a Hachmonite [is] head of the thirty; he is lifting up his spear against three hundred — wounded, at one time.

12 Na hem kwam Elazar, de zoon van Dodo, den Achochiet, ook een van de drie helden.

And after him [is] Eleazar son of Dodo the Ahohite, he [is] among the three mighty;

13 Hij bevond zich met David te Pas-Dammim, toen de Filistijnen zich daar verzameld hadden voor de strijd. Na hem kwam Sjamma, de zoon van Age uit Harari. Eens, toen de Filistijnen zich voor de strijd te Lechi verzameld hadden, waar een stuk land was, geheel met gerst beplant, was het volk voor de Filistijnen op de vlucht geslagen;

he hath been with David in Pas-Dammim, and the Philistines have been gathered there to battle, and a portion of the field is full of barley, and the people have fled from the face of the Philistines,

14 maar hij ging midden op het veld staan en wist het te behouden, door de Filistijnen te verslaan. Zo verleende Jahweh hun een grote overwinning.

and they station themselves in the midst of the portion, and deliver it, and smite the Philistines, and Jehovah saveth — a great salvation.

15 Een andere keer daalden drie van de dertig aanvoerders af, en kwamen bij David in de spelonk van Adoellam, terwijl een bende Filistijnen in de vallei der Refaïeten gelegerd was.

And three of the thirty heads go down on the rock unto David, unto the cave of Adullam, and the host of the Philistines is encamping in the valley of Rephaim,

16 David bevond zich toen in de bergvesting, en de Filistijnen hadden Betlehem bezet.

and David [is] then in the fortress, and the station of the Philistines [is] then in Beth-Lehem,

17 Toen nu David eens het verlangen te kennen gaf, of iemand hem water te drinken kon geven uit de bron bij de poort van Betlehem,

and David longeth, and saith, 'Who doth give me to drink water from the well of Beth-Lehem, that [is] at the gate!'

18 drongen de Drie door de legermacht der Filistijnen heen, putten water uit de bron bij de poort van Betlehem, namen het mee en brachten het bij David. Maar David wilde er niet van drinken, en goot het uit ter ere van Jahweh, terwijl hij uitriep:

And the three break through the camp of the Philistines, and draw water from the well of Beth-Lehem, that [is] at the gate, and bear and bring in unto David, and David hath not been willing to drink it, and poureth it out to Jehovah,

19 Bij Jahweh; ik denk er niet aan, zo iets te doen. Ik zou het bloed en het leven van die drie mensen drinken; want ze hebben hun leven gewaagd, om het mij te kunnen brengen! Daarom wilde hij het niet drinken. Zulke dingen deden de drie helden.

and saith, 'Far be it from me, by my God, to do this; the blood of these men do I drink with their lives? for with their lives they have brought it;' and he was not willing to drink it; these [things] did the three mighty ones.

20 Absjai, de broeder van Joab, was de aanvoerder van de Dertig. Hij zwaaide zijn lans tegen driehonderd man, die hij doodde. Hij was bekend bij de Drie,

And Abishai brother of Joab, he hath been head of the three: and he is lifting up his spear against three hundred — wounded, and hath a name among three.

21 en om twee feiten was hij beroemder dan de Dertig, zodat hij hun aanvoerder werd; maar tegen de Drie kon hij niet op.

Of the three by the two he is honoured, and becometh their head; and unto the [first] three he hath not come.

22 Benaja, de zoon van Jehojada, was een dapper man uit Kabseël, met een uitstekende staat van dienst. Hij versloeg de twee zonen van Ariël uit Moab. Ook doodde hij midden in een kuil een leeuw op een dag, dat er sneeuw lag.

Benaiah son of Jehoiada, son of a man of valour, of great deeds, from Kabzeel: he hath smitten the two lion-like Moabites, and he hath gone down and smitten the lion in the midst of the pit, in the day of snow.

23 Verder versloeg hij een Egyptenaar, een man van ongewone afmetingen, vijf el lang, die met een lans als een weversboom was gewapend; hij ging met een stok op hem af, wrong hem de lans uit de vuist, en stak hem met zijn eigen lans dood.

And he hath smitten the man, the Egyptian — a man of measure, five by the cubit — and in the hand of the Egyptian [is] a spear like a beam of weavers, and he goeth down unto him with a rod, and taketh violently away the spear out of the hand of the Egyptian, and slayeth him with his own spear.

24 Zulke dingen deed Benaja, de zoon van Jehojada! Daardoor was hij bekend bij de Drie.

These [things] hath Benaiah son of Jehoiada done, and hath a name among the three mighty ones.

25 Maar ofschoon hij beroemder was dan de Dertig, tegen de Drie kon hij niet op! Hem stelde David over zijn lijfwacht aan.

Of the thirty, lo, he [is] honoured, and unto the [first] three he hath not come, and David setteth him over his guard.

26 Tenslotte de helden: Asaël, de broer van Joab; Elchanan, de zoon van Dodo uit Betlehem;

And the mighty ones of the forces [are] Asahel brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo of Beth-Lehem,

27 Sjammot uit Harar; Chéles uit Bet-Pélet;

Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite,

28 Ira, de zoon van Ikkesj uit Tekóa; Abiézer uit Anatot;

Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abi-Ezer the Annethothite,

29 Sibbekai uit Choesja; Ilai uit Achoch;

Sibbecai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite,
