< Jeremia 38 >
1 Shefatia wuod Matan, Gedalia wuod Pashur, Jehukal wuod Shelemia, kod Pashur wuod Malkija nowinjo gima Jeremia ne nyiso ji duto sa mane owacho ni,
Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchijah heard what Jeremiah was telling everyone:
2 “Ma e gima Jehova Nyasaye wacho: ‘Ngʼato angʼata modak e dala maduongʼni noneg gi ligangla, kech kata masira, to ngʼato angʼata manodhi ir jo-Babulon nobed mangima. Notony gi ngimane; mi nobed mangima.’
This is what the Lord says: Anyone who remains in this city will die from war and famine and disease, but anyone who goes over to the Babylonians will live. Their reward will be to save their lives.
3 Kendo ma e gima Jehova Nyasaye wacho: ‘Dala maduongʼni nyaka chiwne jolweny mar ruodh Babulon ma nokawe.’”
This is what the Lord says: Be sure of this—Jerusalem will be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon. He is going to capture it.
4 Eka jotelo nowachone ruoth niya, “Ngʼatni onego negi. Onyoso chuny jolweny modongʼ e dala maduongʼ ni, kaachiel gi ji duto, gi gigo mowachonegi. Ngʼatni ok dwar dhi maber mar jogi to mana kethruokgi.”
The officers told the king, “This man deserves to die because he's demoralizing the defenders left in the city, and all the people too, by telling them this. This man isn't trying to help these people, he's only going to destroy them.”
5 Ruoth Zedekia nowacho niya, “En e lwetu. Onge gima ruoth nyalo timo mondo okwed wachu.”
“Well, you can do whatever you want to him,” King Zedekiah replied. “I can't stop you.”
6 Omiyo negikawo Jeremia ma giketo e bur mar Malkija, wuod ruoth, mane nitiere e laru mar jarito. Ne giloro Jeremia gi tonde ei burno; ne onge pi e iye, chwodho ema ne nitie, kendo Jeremia nonimo ei chwodho.
So they took Jeremiah and put him in the cistern belonging to Malchiah, the king's son, which was in the guard's courtyard. They lowered Jeremiah down with ropes into the cistern. It didn't have any water, only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.
7 To Ebed-Melek, ja-Kush, ma jatelo e kar dak ruoth, nowinjo nine giseketo Jeremia ei bur. Ka ruoth ne obet e Dhoranga Benjamin,
Ebed-melech the Cushite, a royal official in the king's palace, found out that they had put Jeremiah in the cistern. The king was sitting at the Benjamin Gate,
8 Ebed-Melek nowuok oa e kar dak ruoth kendo owachone ni,
so Ebed-melech left the palace and went to talk to the king
9 “Jaduongʼ ma ruodha, jogi osetimo gima mono kuom gigo duto magisetimone janabi Jeremia. Giwite e bur, kama kech biro nege motho ka makati duto orumo e dala maduongʼ.”
“My lord the king, all these terrible things these men have done to Jeremiah the prophet are evil. They've put him in the cistern, and he'll starve to death there because there's no more bread left in the city.”
10 Eka ruoth nomiyo Ebed-Melek ja-Kush chik, “Kaw chwo piero adek koa kae kendo ugol janabi Jeremia e bur kapok otho.”
So the king gave the order to Ebed-melech the Cushite, “Take thirty men with you and go and pull Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”
11 Omiyo Ebed-Melek nokawo jogo kendo odhigo e agola manie bwo kar keno mar dala ruoth. Ne okawo lewni moyiech kod lewni moti kanyo kendo nolorogi piny gi tol ne Jeremia ei bur.
Ebed-melech took the men and went to the storehouse under the palace. He took some rags and old clothes from there and then went to the cistern where he lowered them with ropes to Jeremiah.
12 Ebed-Melek ja-Kush nowacho ne Jeremia niya, “Ket lewni mokengoregi kod lewni moti e yuothi mondo kik tol ridhi.” Jeremia notimo kamano,
Ebed-melech the Cushite called down to Jeremiah, “Put these rags and old clothes under your arms to protect you from the ropes.” Jeremiah did so,
13 mine giywaye gi tol ma gigole oko mar bur. Kendo Jeremia nodongʼ e laru mar jarito.
and using the ropes they pulled him up and took him out of the cistern. Jeremiah stayed there in the guard's courtyard.
14 Eka Ruoth Zedekia nooro wach mondo okelne janabi Jeremia kendo nokelnego e kar donjo mar adek mar hekalu mar Jehova Nyasaye. Ruoth nowachone niya, “Adhi penji gimoro. Kik ipanda wach.”
Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and met him at the third Temple entrance. “I need to ask you something,” the king told Jeremiah. “You mustn't hide anything from me.”
15 Jeremia nowachone Zedekia niya, “Ka adwoki, donge ibiro nega? Kata ka anangʼadni rieko, bende iniwinja.”
“If I tell you then you'll definitely have me killed,” Jeremiah replied. “Even if I were to give you advice, you wouldn't listen to me anyway.”
16 To Ruoth Zedekia nokwongʼore gi kwongʼruokni lingʼ-lingʼ ne Jeremia: “Akwongʼora gi nying Jehova Nyasaye mangima, mosemiyowa muya, ok ananegi kata chiwi ne jogo madwaro ngimani.”
King Zedekiah solemnly promised Jeremiah in private, “As the Lord lives, who gave us this life, I won't have you killed, and I won't hand you over to those who want to kill you.”
17 Eka Jeremia nowachone Zedekia niya, “Ma e gima Jehova Nyasaye Maratego, ma Nyasach Israel, wacho: ‘Ka ichiwori ne jotelo mag ruodh Babulon, ngimani noweni kendo dala maduongʼni ok nowangʼ, in kod joodi unubed mangima.
Then Jeremiah told Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you hand yourself over to the officers of the king of Babylon, then you'll live. Jerusalem won't be burned down, and you and your family will survive.
18 To ka ok ichiwori ne jotend ruodh Babulon, dala maduongʼni nomi jo-Babulon kendo giniwangʼe; un uwegi ok unutony e lwetgi.’”
But if you don't hand yourself over to the officers of the king of Babylon, then this city will be given to the Babylonians. They will burn it down, and you yourself won't escape being captured.”
19 Ruoth Zedekia nowachone Jeremia niya, “Aluoro jo-Yahudi mosedhi ir jo-Babulon, nimar jo-Babulon nyalo chiwa e lwetgi mi gisanda.”
But King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the those people of Judah who have gone over to the Babylonians, because the Babylonians might hand me over the them so they could abuse me.”
20 Jeremia nodwoke niya, “Ok ginichiwi.” Luor Jehova Nyasaye kitimo gima anyisi. Eka inine maber, kendo ngimani noweni.
“They won't hand you over,” Jeremiah replied. “If you obey what the Lord says by doing what I tell you, then things will go well for you and you'll live.
21 To ka itamori chiwori, ma e gima Jehova Nyasaye osefwenyona:
But if you refuse to hand yourself over, this is what the Lord has told me:
22 Mon duto mane odongʼ kar dak mar ruodh Juda nokelne jotelo mar ruodh Babulon. Mon-go nowachni ni: Osiepegi mane igenogo nowuondi kendo noloyi. Tiendegi oselingʼore e chwodho; osiepegi oseweyi.
All the women who are left in the palace of the king of Judah will be led out and handed over to the officials of the king of Babylon Those women will say: ‘Those good friends of yours! You were taken in by them and conquered by them. Your feet got stuck in the mid, so they abandoned you.’
23 “Mondeu duto kod nyithindu nokelne jo-Babulon. Un uwegi ok unutony e lwetgi to enomaku gi ruodh Babulon; kendo dala maduongʼni nowangʼ mapodhi.”
All your wives and children will be handed over to the Chaldeans. And you yourself will not escape, for you will be captured by the king of Babylon, and Jerusalem will be burned down.”
24 Eka Zedekia nowachone Jeremia niya, “Kik iwe ngʼato ongʼe twak-wani, ka ok kamano to inyalo tho.
Zedekiah warned Jeremiah, “Nobody can find out about this conversation, otherwise you'll die.
25 Ka jotelo owinjo nine awuoyo kodi, kendo gibiro iri ma giwacho, ‘Nyiswa gima ne iwachone ruoth kendo gima ruoth nowachoni; kik ipandwa ka ok kamano to wabiro negi,’
If the officers find out that I've talked with you, and they come and ask you, ‘Tell us what you and the king were talking about! Don't hide anything from us, or we'll kill you;’
26 to nyisgi ni, ‘Ne asayo ruoth mondo kik oora adog e od Jonathan mondo atho kanyo.’”
then you are to tell them, ‘I was asking the king to grant my request not to return me to the house of Jonathan to die there.’”
27 Jotelo duto nobiro ir Jeremia mi gipenje, kendo nonyisogi gik moko duto mane ruoth ochike mondo awachi. Omiyo onge gima negichako ginyise, nimar onge ngʼama nowinjo twakgi gi ruoth.
When all the officers came to Jeremiah wanting to know, he repeated to them exactly what the king had told him to say. So they didn't ask him anything more because no one had heard what had been said.
28 Kendo Jeremia nodongʼ e laru mar jarito nyaka odiechiengʼ ma Jerusalem nokaw. Ma e kaka Jerusalem ne okaw:
Jeremiah remained there in the guard's courtyard until the day Jerusalem was captured.
