1 Mildt svar stiller Vrede, saarende Ord vækker Nag.
A soft answer turneth away fury; but a mortifying word stirreth up anger.
2 Vises Tunge drypper af Kundskab, Daarskab strømmer fra Taabers Mund.
The tongue of the wise maketh knowledge acceptable; but the mouth of fools sputtereth out folly.
3 Alle Vegne er HERRENS Øjne, de udspejder onde og gode.
In every place are the eyes of the Lord, looking on the bad and the good.
4 Et Livets Træ er Tungens Mildhed, dens Falskhed giver Hjertesaar.
A healing [word] of the tongue is a tree of life; but perverseness therein is a breach to the spirit.
5 Daare lader haant om sin Faders Tugt, klog er den, som tager Vare paa Revselse.
A fool contemneth the correction of his father; but he that observeth admonition will become prudent.
6 Den retfærdiges Hus har megen Velstand, den gudløses Høst lægges øde.
In the house of the righteous there is much treasure; but in the income of the wicked is trouble.
7 Vises Læber udstrør Kundskab, Taabers Hjerte er ikke ret.
The lips of the wise scatter knowledge; but the heart of fools is not reliable.
8 Gudløses Offer er HERREN en Gru, retsindiges Bøn har han Velbehag i.
The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination of the Lord: but, the prayer of the upright [obtaineth] his favor.
9 Den gudløses Færd er HERREN en Gru, han elsker den, der stræber efter Retfærd.
An abomination of the Lord is the way of the wicked; but him that pursueth righteousness will he love.
10 Streng Tugt er for den, der forlader Vejen; den, der hader Revselse, dør.
An evil correction is [destined] for him that forsaketh the [right] path; he that hateth admonition will die.
11 Dødsrige og Afgrund ligger aabne for HERREN, endsige da Menneskebørnenes Hjerter. (Sheol )
The nether world and corruption are open before the Lord: how much more then the hearts of the children of men! (Sheol )
12 Spotteren ynder ikke at revses, til Vismænd gaar han ikke.
A scorner loveth not that one should admonish him: unto the wise doth he not go.
13 Glad Hjerte giver venligt Ansigt, ved Hjertesorg bliver Modet brudt.
A merry heart cheereth up the countenance; but when the heart feeleth pain the spirit is depressed.
14 Den forstandiges Hjerte søger Kundskab, Taabers Mund lægger Vind paa Daarskab.
The heart of the man of understanding seeketh knowledge; but the mouth of fools feedeth on folly.
15 Alle den armes Dage er onde, glad Hjerte er stadigt Gæstebud.
All the days of the afflicted are evil; but he that is of a cheerful heart hath a continual feast.
16 Bedre lidet med HERRENS Frygt end store Skatte med Uro.
Better is little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure and confusion therewith.
17 Bedre en Ret Grønt med Kærlighed end fedet Okse og Had derhos.
Better is an allowance of herbs when love is there, than a stall-fed ox and hatred therewith.
18 Vredladen Mand vækker Splid, sindig Mand stiller Trætte.
A man of fury stirreth up strife; but he that is slow to anger assuageth contention.
19 Den lades Vej er spærret af Tjørn, de flittiges Sti er banet.
The way of the slothful man is like a hedge of thorns; but the path of the upright is a levelled [road].
20 Viis Søn glæder sin Fader, Taabe til Menneske foragter sin Moder.
A wise son causeth his father to rejoice; but a foolish man despiseth his mother.
21 Daarskab er Glæde for Mand uden Vid, Mand med Indsigt gaar lige frem.
Folly is joy to him that is void of sense; but a man of understanding walketh straight forward.
22 Er der ikke holdt Raad, saa mislykkes Planer, de lykkes, naar mange raadslaar.
Plans are frustrated without consultation; but through a multitude of counsellors canst thou maintain thyself.
23 Mand er glad, naar hans Mund kan svare, hvor godt er et Ord i rette Tid.
A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth; and a word [spoken] at the proper time, how good is it!
24 Den kloge gaar opad paa Livets Vej for at undgaa Dødsriget nedentil. (Sheol )
The path of life [leadeth] upward for the intelligent, in order that he may avoid the nether world beneath. (Sheol )
25 Hovmodiges Hus river HERREN bort, han fastsætter Enkens Skel.
The Lord, will tear down the house of the proud; but he will set up firmly the boundary [-stone] of the widow.
26 Onde Tanker er HERREN en Gru, men hulde Ord er rene.
An abomination of the Lord are the thoughts of the bad man; but pleasant speeches are pure [before him].
27 Den øder sit Hus, hvem Vinding er alt; men leve skal den, der hader Gave.
He that is greedy after gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts will live.
28 Den retfærdiges Hjerte tænker, før det svarer, gudløses Mund lader ondt strømme ud.
The heart of the righteous reflecteth to answer; but the mouth of the wicked sputtereth out evil things.
29 HERREN er gudløse fjern, men hører retfærdiges Bøn.
The Lord is far from the wicked; but the prayer of the righteous doth he hear.
30 Milde Øjne fryder Hjertet, godt Bud giver Marv i Benene.
[What is pleasant to] the light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: a good report giveth marrow to the bones.
31 Øret, der lytter til Livsens Revselse, vil gerne dvæle iblandt de vise.
The ear that heareth the admonition of life will ever abide in the midst of the wise.
32 Hvo Tugt forsmaar, lader haant om sin Sjæl, men Vid fanger den, der lytter til Revselse.
He that rejecteth correction despiseth his own soul; but he that heareth admonition acquireth intelligence.
33 HERRENS Frygt er Tugt til Visdom, Ydmyghed først og siden Ære.
The fear of the Lord is the correction for wisdom; and before honor there must come humility.
