1 Samuel 31
1 Imidlertid angreb Filisterne Israel; og Israels Mænd flygtede for Filisterne, og de faldne laa rundt om paa Gilboas Bjerg.
And the Philistines fought with Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and they fall down wounded in the mountain in Gelbue.
2 Og Filisterne forfulgte Saul og hans Sønner og dræbte Sauls Sønner, Jonatan, Abinadab og Malkisjua.
And the Philistines press closely on Saul and his sons, and the Philistines strike Jonathan, and Aminadab, and Melchisa son of Saul.
3 Kampen rasede om Saul, og han blev opdaget af Bueskytterne og grebes af stor Angst for dem.
And the battle prevails against Saul, and the shooters with arrows, even the archers find him, and he was wounded under the ribs.
4 Da sagde Saul til sin Vaabendrager: »Drag dit Sværd og gennembor mig, for at ikke disse uomskaarne skal komme og gennembore mig og mishandle mig!« Men Vaabendrageren vilde ikke, thi han gøs tilbage derfor. Da tog Saul Sværdet og styrtede sig i det;
And Saul said to his armour-bearer, Draw your sword and pierce me through with it; lest these uncircumcised come and pierce me through, and mock me. But his armour-bearer would not, for he feared greatly: so Saul took his sword and fell upon it.
5 og da Vaabendrageren saa, at Saul var død, styrtede ogsaa han sig i sit Sværd og fulgte ham i Døden.
And his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, and he fell also himself upon his sword, and died with him.
6 Saaledes fulgtes denne Dag Saul, hans tre Sønner, hans Vaabendrager og alle hans Mænd i Døden.
So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armour-bearer, in that day together.
7 Men da Israels Mænd i Byerne i Dalen og ved Jordan saa, at Israels Mænd var flygtet, og at Saul og hans Sønner var faldet, forlod de Byerne og flygtede, hvorpaa Filisterne kom og besatte dem.
And the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those beyond Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead; and they leave their cities and flee: and the Philistines come and dwell in them.
8 Da Filisterne Dagen efter kom for at plyndre de faldne, fandt de Saul og hans tre Sønner liggende paa Gilboas Bjerg;
And it came to pass on the morrow that the Philistines come to strip the dead, and they find Saul and his three sons fallen on the mountains of Gelbue.
9 de huggede da Hovedet at ham, afførte ham hans Vaaben og sendte Bud rundt i Filisternes Land for at bringe deres Afguder og Folket Glædesbudet.
And they turned him, and stripped off his armour, and sent it into the land of the Philistines, sending round glad tidings to their idols and to the people.
10 Vaabnene lagde de i Astartes Tempel, men Kroppen hængte de op paa Bet-Sjans Mur.
And they set up his armour at the temple of Astarte, and they fastened his body on the wall of Baethsam.
11 Men da Indbyggerne i Jabesj i Gilead hørte, hvad Filisterne havde gjort ved Saul,
And the inhabitants of Jabis Galaad hear what the Philistines did to Saul.
12 brød alle vaabenføre Mænd op, og efter at have gaaet hele Natten igennem tog de Sauls og hans Sønners Kroppe ned fra Bet-Sjans Mur, bragte dem med til Jabesj og brændte dem der.
And they rose up, [even] every man of might, and marched all night, and took the body of Saul and the body of Jonathan his son from the wall of Baethsam; and they bring them to Jabis, and burn them there.
13 Saa tog de deres Ben og jordede dem under Tamarisken i Jabesj og fastede syv Dage.
And they take their bones, and bury them in the field that is in Jabis, and fast seven days.
