1 Visdommen har bygget sit Hus, har udhugget sine syv Piller;
Wisdom has made her house, putting up her seven pillars.
2 hun har slagtet sit Slagtekvæg, blandet sin Vin og dækket sit Bord;
She has put her fat beasts to death; her wine is mixed, her table is ready.
3 hun har udsendt sine Piger, hun kalder fra Toppene af Stadens Høje:
She has sent out her women-servants; her voice goes out to the highest places of the town, saying,
4 Hvo der er uvidende, den vende sig hid; og til den, som fattes Forstand, siger hun:
Whoever is simple, let him come in here; and to him who has no sense, she says:
5 Kommer hid, æder af mit Brød, og drikker af Vinen, som jeg har blandet.
Come, take of my bread, and of my wine which is mixed.
6 Forlader Uvidenhed, saa skulle I leve, og gaar lige frem paa Forstandens Vej.
Give up the simple ones and have life, and go in the way of knowledge.
7 Hvo som revser en Spotter, henter sig Spot, og hvo som irettesætter den ugudelige, faar Skændsel til Løn.
He who gives teaching to a man of pride gets shame for himself; he who says sharp words to a sinner gets a bad name.
8 Sæt ikke en Spotter i Rette, at han ikke skal hade dig; sæt en viis i Rette, og han skal elske dig.
Do not say sharp words to a man of pride, or he will have hate for you; make them clear to a wise man, and you will be dear to him.
9 Giv den vise, og han skal blive visere; undervis den retfærdige, og han skal tage til i Lærdom.
Give teaching to a wise man, and he will become wiser; give training to an upright man, and his learning will be increased.
10 Herrens Frygt er Visdoms Begyndelse, og Kundskab om den Hellige er Forstand.
The fear of the Lord is the start of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One gives a wise mind
11 Thi ved mig skulle dine Dage blive mange, og flere Leveaar skulle vorde dig tillagte.
For by me your days will be increased, and the years of your life will be long.
12 Dersom du er viis, er du viis til dit eget Gavn; men spotter du, skal du bære det alene.
If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if your heart is full of pride, you only will have the pain of it.
13 Daarskaben er en urolig Kvinde, idel Uvidenhed, og kender ikke noget.
The foolish woman is full of noise; she has no sense at all.
14 Og hun sidder ved sit Hus's Dør, paa en Stol paa Stadens Høje,
Seated at the door of her house, in the high places of the town,
15 for at kalde paa dem, som gaa forbi ad Vejen, dem, som vandre ret frem paa deres Stier;
Crying out to those who go by, going straight on their way, she says:
16 hvo der er uvidende, den vende sig hid; og den, som fattes Forstand, ham taler hun til.
Whoever is simple, let him come in here: and to him who is without sense, she says:
17 Stjaalet Vand er sødt, og lønligt Brød er lækkert.
Drink taken without right is sweet, and food in secret is pleasing.
18 Men han ved ikke, at der er Dødninger der; de, som ere indbudne af hende, ere i Dødsrigets Dyb. (Sheol )
But he does not see that the dead are there, that her guests are in the deep places of the underworld. (Sheol )
