1 Min Søn! dersom du er gaaet i Borgen hos din Næste, har givet Haandslag til den fremmede;
My son, if you set aside your money as a guarantee for your neighbor's loan, if you gave your promise for a loan of someone you do not know,
2 har du bundet dig ved din Munds Ord, ladet dig fange ved din Mands Ord:
then you have laid a trap for yourself by your promise and you have been caught by the words of your mouth.
3 Saa gør dog dette, min Søn! og red dig, fordi du er kommen i din Næstes Haand: Gak, nedkast dig for hans Fødder, og træng ind paa din Næste!
When you are caught by your words, my son, do this and save yourself, since you have fallen into the hand of your neighbor; go and humble yourself and make your case before your neighbor.
4 Tilsted ikke dine Øjne at sove eller dine Øjenlaage at slumre.
Give your eyes no sleep and your eyelids no slumber.
5 Fri dig som en Raa af Jægerens Haand og som en Fugl af Fuglefængerens Haand.
Save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Du lade! gak til Myren, se dens Veje, og bliv viis.
Look at the ant, you lazy person, consider her ways, and be wise.
7 Skønt den ikke har nogen Fyrste, Foged eller Hersker,
It has no commander, officer, or ruler,
8 bereder den om Sommeren sin Mad, den samler om Høsten sin Spise.
yet it prepares its food in the summer and during the harvest it stores up what it will eat.
9 Du lade! hvor længe vil du ligge? naar vil du staa op af din Søvn?
How long will you sleep, you lazy person? When will you rise from your sleep?
10 Sov lidt endnu, blund lidt, fold Hænderne lidt for at hvile:
“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest”—
11 Saa skal din Armod komme som en Landstryger og din Trang som skjoldvæbnet Mand.
and your poverty will come like a robber and your needs like an armed soldier.
12 Et nedrigt Menneske, en uretfærdig Mand er den, som gaar med en vanartig Mund;
A worthless person—a wicked man— lives by the crookedness of his speech,
13 den, som giver Vink med sine Øjne, gør Tegn med sine Fødder, peger med sine Fingre;
winking his eyes, making signals with his feet and pointing with his fingers.
14 den, som har forvendte Ting i sit Hjerte og optænker ondt til hver Tid og kommer Trætter af Sted.
He plots evil with deceit in his heart; he always stirs up discord.
15 Derfor skal hans Ulykke komme hastelig, han skal snart sønderknuses, og der skal ingen Lægedom være.
Therefore his disaster will overtake him in an instant; in a moment he will be broken beyond healing.
16 Disse seks Stykker hader Herren, og de syv ere en Vederstyggelighed for hans Sjæl:
There are six things that Yahweh hates, seven that are disgusting to him.
17 Stolte Øjne, en løgnagtig Tunge og Hænder, som udgyde den uskyldiges Blod;
The eyes of a proud person, a tongue that lies, hands that shed the blood of innocent people,
18 et Hjerte, som optænker uretfærdige Tanker; Fødder, som haste med at løbe til det onde;
a heart that invents wicked schemes, feet that quickly run to do evil,
19 den, der som falsk Vidne taler Løgn; og den, som kommer Trætter af Sted imellem Brødre.
a witness who breathes out lies and one who sows discord among brothers.
20 Min Søn! bevar din Faders Bud, og forlad ikke din Moders Lov.
My son, obey the command of your father and do not forsake the teaching of your mother.
21 Knyt dem til dit Hjerte for stedse, bind dem om din Hals!
Always bind them on your heart; tie them about your neck.
22 Naar du vandrer, skal den lede dig, naar du lægger dig, skal den bevare dig, og naar du opvaagner, skal den tale til dig.
When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; and when you wake up, they will teach you.
23 Thi Budet er en Lampe og Loven et Lys, og Undervisningens Revselse er Vej til Livet;
For the commands are a lamp, and the teaching is a light; the corrections that come by instruction are the way of life.
24 at den maa bevare dig fra en ond Kvinde, fra en fremmed Tunges Sledskhed.
It keeps you from the immoral woman, from the smooth words of an immoral woman.
25 Begær ikke hendes Dejlighed i dit Hjerte, og lad hende ikke indtage dig med sine Øjenlaage!
Do not lust in your heart after her beauty and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes.
26 Thi for en Skøges Skyld gælder det kun om et Stykke Brød, men en anden Mands Hustru fanger den dyrebare Sjæl.
Sleeping with a prostitute can cost the price of a loaf of bread, but the wife of another may cost you your very life.
27 Mon nogen kan tage Ild i sin Barm, uden at hans Klæder brændes op?
Can a man carry a fire against his chest without burning his clothes?
28 Eller mon nogen kan gaa paa Gløder, uden at hans Fødder brændes?
Can a man walk on hot coals without scorching his feet?
29 Saa sker det ham, som gaar ind til sin Næstes Hustru; ingen, som rører hende, slipper fri for Straf.
So is the man who sleeps with his neighbor's wife; the one who sleeps with her will not go unpunished.
30 Man ringeagter ikke, at en Tyv stjæler for at mætte sig, naar han er hungrig;
People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his need when he is hungry.
31 men naar han bliver greben, maa han betale syv Fold, han maa give alt sit Hus's Gods.
Yet if he is caught, he will pay back seven times what he stole; he must give up everything of value in his house.
32 Den, som bedriver Hor med en Kvinde, fattes Forstand; den, som vil fordærve sin Sjæl, han, ja han gør sligt.
The one who commits adultery has no sense; the one who does it destroys himself.
33 Plage og Skam skal ramme ham, og hans Skændsel skal ikke udslettes.
Wounds and shame are what he deserves and his disgrace will not be wiped away.
34 Thi nidkær er Mandens Vrede, og han skal ikke skaane paa Hævnens Dag;
For jealousy makes a man furious; he will show no mercy when he takes his revenge.
35 han skal ikke tage nogen Bod for gyldig og ikke samtykke, om du end vilde give megen Skænk.
He will accept no compensation and he cannot be bought off, though you offer him many gifts.
