1 En viis Søn modtager sin Faders Tugt; men en Spotter hører ikke paa Irettesættelse.
A wise son is the doctrine of his father. But he who ridicules does not listen when he is reproved.
2 Af sin Munds Frugt nyder en Mand godt; men de troløses Sjæl høster Krænkelse.
From the fruit of his own mouth, a man shall be satisfied with good things. But the soul of betrayers is iniquity.
3 Hvo som vogter sin Mund, bevarer sin Sjæl; den, som lader sine Læber vidt op, ham er det til Fordærvelse.
Whoever guards his mouth guards his soul. But whoever gives no consideration to his speech shall experience misfortunes.
4 Den lades Sjæl begærer og faar intet; men de flittiges Sjæl næres rigeligt.
The lazy one is willing and then not willing. But the soul of he who labors shall be made fat.
5 Den retfærdige hader Løgns Ord; men den ugudelige gør Skam og Vanære.
The just shall detest a lying word. But the impious confound and will be confounded.
6 Retfærdighed bevarer den, som vandrer oprigtigt sin Vej; men Ugudelighed styrter Synderen.
Justice guards the way of the innocent. But impiety undermines the sinner.
7 Der er den, som holder sig for rig og har dog intet; og den, som holder sig for fattig og har meget Gods.
One is like the rich, though he has nothing. And another is like the poor, though he has many riches.
8 En Mands Rigdom er Løsepenge for hans Liv! men en fattig hører ikke paa Irettesættelse.
The redemption of a man’s life is his riches. But he who is poor cannot tolerate correction.
9 De retfærdiges Lys skinner frydeligt; men de ugudeliges Lampe skal udslukkes.
The light of the just enriches. But the lamp of the impious will be extinguished.
10 Ved Hovmod foraarsager man kun Trætte; men hos dem, som lade sig raade, er Visdom.
Among the arrogant, there are always conflicts. But those who do everything with counsel are ruled by wisdom.
11 Gods formindskes ved Forfængelighed; men hvo som samler i Haanden, forøger det.
Substance obtained in haste will be diminished. But what is collected by hand, little by little, shall be multiplied.
12 Forventning, som forhales, krænker Hjertet; men naar det kommer, som man begærer, da er det et Livsens Træ.
Hope, when it is delayed, afflicts the soul. The arrival of the desired is a tree of life.
13 Hvo som foragter Ordet, bereder sig Fordærvelse; men hvo som frygter Budet, han faar Løn derfor.
Whoever denounces something obligates himself for the future. But whoever fears a lesson shall turn away in peace. Deceitful souls wander into sins. The just are merciful and compassionate.
14 Den vises Lærdom er Livets Kilde, saa at man viger fra Dødens Snarer.
The law of the wise is a fountain of life, so that he may turn aside from the ruin of death.
15 En god Forstand giver Naade; men de troløses Vej er haard.
Good doctrine bestows grace. In the way of the contemptuous, there is a chasm.
16 Hver, som er klog, gør sine Ting med Forstand; men Daaren udbreder Taabelighed.
The discerning do everything with counsel. But whoever is senseless discloses his stupidity.
17 Et ugudeligt Sendebud falder i Ulykke; men et trofast Bud er Lægedom.
The messenger of the impious will fall into evil. But a faithful ambassador shall prosper.
18 Hvo, som lader Tugt fare, faar Armod og Skam; men den, som agter paa Revselse, faar Ære.
Destitution and disgrace are for those who abandon discipline. But whoever agrees with a reproof shall be glorified.
19 Naar det sker, som man begærer, da er det sødt for Sjælen; men at vige fra ondt, er Daarer en Vederstyggelighed.
The desired, when perfected, shall delight the soul. The foolish detest those who flee from evils.
20 Den, som omgaas med vise, bliver viis, men den, som er Ven med Daarer, faar Ulykke.
Whoever keeps step with the wise shall be wise. A friend of the foolish will become like them.
21 Ulykke forfølger Syndere; men den retfærdige betales med godt.
Evil pursues sinners. And good things shall be distributed to the just.
22 Den gode efterlader Børnebørn en Arv; men Synderes Gods er gemt til den retfærdige.
The good leave behind heirs: children and grandchildren. And the substance of the sinner is preserved for the just.
23 Den fattiges nyopdyrkede Land yder megen Føde; men der er den, som gaar til Grunde, fordi han ikke gør Ret.
Much nourishment is in the fallow land of the fathers. But for others, it is gathered without judgment.
24 Hvo som sparer sit Ris, hader sin Søn; men den, som elsker ham, tugter ham tidligt.
He who spares the rod hates his son. But he who loves him urgently instructs him.
25 Den retfærdige kan spise, til hans Sjæl bliver mæt; men de ugudeliges Bug skal lide Mangel.
The just eats and fills his soul. But the belly of the impious is never satisfied.
