1 Smlouvu jsem učinil s očima svýma, a proč bych hleděl na pannu?

I made a covenant with mine eyes, and I will not think upon a virgin.

2 Nebo jaký jest díl od Boha s hůry, aneb dědictví od Všemohoucího s výsosti?

Now what portion has God given from above? and is there an inheritance [given] of the Mighty One from the highest?

3 Zdaliž zahynutí nešlechetnému a pomsta zázračná činitelům nepravosti připravena není?

Alas! destruction to the unrighteous, and rejection to them that do iniquity.

4 Zdaliž on nevidí cest mých, a všech kroků mých nepočítá?

Will he not see my way, and number all my steps?

5 Obíral-li jsem se s neupřímostí, a chvátala-li ke lsti noha má:

But if I had gone with scorners, and if too my foot has hasted to deceit:

6 Nechť mne zváží na váze spravedlnosti, a přezví Bůh upřímost mou.

(for I am weighed in a just balance, and the Lord knows my innocence: )

7 Uchýlil-li se krok můj s cesty, a za očima mýma odešlo-li srdce mé, a rukou mých chytila-li se jaká poškvrna:

if my foot has turned aside out of the way, or if mine heart has followed mine eye, and if too I have touched gifts with my hands;

8 Tedy co naseji, nechť jiný sní, a výstřelkové moji ať jsou vykořeněni.

then let me sow, and let others eat; and let me be uprooted on the earth.

9 Jestliže se dalo přivábiti srdce mé k ženě, a u dveří bližního svého činil-li jsem úklady:

If my heart has gone forth after another man's wife, and if I laid wait at her doors;

10 Nechť mele jinému žena má, a nad ní ať se schylují jiní.

then let my wife also please another, and let my children be brought low.

11 Neboť jest to nešlechetnost, a nepravost odsudku hodná.

For the rage of anger is not to be controlled, [in the case] of defiling [another] man's wife.

12 Oheň ten zajisté by až do zahynutí žral, a všecku úrodu mou vykořenil.

For it is a fire burning on every side, and whoever it attacks, it utterly destroys.

13 Nechtěl-li jsem státi k soudu s služebníkem svým aneb děvkou svou v rozepři jejich se mnou?

And if too I despised the judgment of my servant or [my] handmaid, when they pleaded with me;

14 Nebo co bych činil, kdyby povstal Bůh silný? A kdyby vyhledával, co bych odpověděl jemu?

what then shall I do if the Lord should try me? and if also he should at all visit me, can I make an answer?

15 Zdali ten, kterýž mne v břiše učinil, neučinil i jeho? A nesformoval nás hned v životě jeden a týž?

Were not they too formed as I also was formed in the womb? yes, we were formed in the same womb.

16 Odepřel-li jsem žádosti nuzných, a oči vdovy jestliže jsem kormoutil?

But the helpless missed not whatever need they had, and I did not cause the eye of the widow to fail.

17 A jedl-li jsem skyvu svou sám, a nejedl-li i sirotek z ní?

And if too I ate my morsel alone, and did not impart [of it] to the orphan;

18 Poněvadž od mladosti mé rostl se mnou jako u otce, a od života matky své býval jsem vdově za vůdce.

(for I nourished [them] as a father from my youth and guided [them] from my mother's womb.)

19 Díval-li jsem se na koho, že by hynul, nemaje šatů, a nuzný že by neměl oděvu?

And if too I overlooked the naked as he was perishing, and did not clothe him;

20 Nedobrořečila-li mi bedra jeho, že rounem beranů mých se zahřel?

and if the poor did not bless me, and their shoulders were [not] warmed with the fleece of my lambs;

21 Opřáhl-li jsem na sirotka rukou svou, když jsem v bráně viděl pomoc svou:

if I lifted my hand against an orphan, trusting that my strength was far superior [to his]:

22 Lopatka má od svých plecí nechť odpadne, a ruka má z kloubu svého ať se vylomí.

let them my shoulder start from the blade-bone, and my arm be crushed off from the elbow.

23 Nebo jsem se bál, aby mne Bůh nesetřel, jehož bych velebnosti nikoli neznikl.

For the fear of the Lord constrained me, and I can’t bear up by reason of his burden.

24 Skládal-li jsem v zlatě naději svou, aneb hrudě zlata říkal-li jsem: Doufání mé?

If I made gold my treasure, and if too I trusted the precious stone;

25 Veselil-li jsem se z toho, že bylo rozmnoženo zboží mé, a že ho množství nabyla ruka má?

and if too I rejoiced when my wealth was abundant, and if too I laid my hand on innumerable [treasures]:

26 Hleděl-li jsem na světlost slunce svítícího, a na měsíc spanile chodící,

(do we not see the shining sun eclipsed, and the moon waning? for they have not [power to continue]: )

27 Tak že by se tajně dalo svésti srdce mé, a že by líbala ústa má ruku mou?

and if my heart was secretly deceived, and if I have laid my hand upon my mouth and kissed it:

28 I toť by byla nepravost odsudku hodná; neboť bych tím zapíral Boha silného nejvyššího.

let this also then be reckoned to me as the greatest iniquity: for I [should] have lied against the Lord Most High.

29 Radoval-li jsem se z neštěstí toho, kterýž mne nenáviděl, a plésal-li jsem, když se mu zle vedlo?

And if too I was glad at the fall of mine enemies, and mine heart said, Aha!

30 Nedopustilť jsem zajisté hřešiti ani ústům svým, abych zlořečení žádal duši jeho.

let then mine ear hear my curse, and let me be a byword among my people in my affliction.

31 Jestliže neříkala čeládka má: Ó by nám dal někdo masa toho; nemůžeme se ani najísti?

And if too my handmaids have often said, Oh that we might be satisfied with his flesh; (whereas I was very kind:

32 Nebo vně nenocoval host, dvéře své pocestnému otvíral jsem.

for the stranger did not lodge without, and my door was opened to every one that came: )

33 Přikrýval-li jsem jako jiní lidé přestoupení svá, skrývaje v skrýši své nepravost svou?

or if too having sinned unintentionally, I hid my sin;

34 A ač bych byl mohl škoditi množství velikému, ale pohanění rodů děsilo mne; protož jsem mlčel, nevycházeje ani ze dveří.

(for I did not stand in awe of a great multitude, so as not to declare boldly before them: ) and if too I permitted a poor man to go out of my door with an empty bosom:

35 Ó bych měl toho, kterýž by mne vyslyšel. Ale aj, totoť jest znamení mé: Všemohoucí sám bude odpovídati za mne, a kniha, kterouž sepsal odpůrce můj.

(Oh that I had a hearer, ) and if I had not feared the hand of the Lord; and [as to] the written charge which I had against any one,

36 Víť Bůh, nenosil-li bych ji na rameni svém, neotočil-li bych ji sobě místo koruny.

I would place [it] as a chaplet on my shoulders, and read it.

37 Počet kroků svých oznámil bych jemu, jako kníže přiblížil bych se k němu.

And if I did not read it and return it, having taken nothing from the debtor:

38 Jestliže proti mně země má volala, tolikéž i záhonové její plakali,

If at any time the land groaned against me, and if its furrows mourned together;

39 Jídal-li jsem úrody její bez peněz, a duši držitelů jejich přivodil-li jsem k vzdychání:

and if I ate its strength alone without price, and if I too grieved the heart of the owner of the soil, by taking [anything] from [him]:

40 Místo pšenice nechť vzejde trní, a místo ječmene koukol. Skonávají se slova Jobova.

then let the nettle come up to me instead of wheat, and a bramble instead of barley. And Job ceased speaking.
