1 ⲁ̅ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥϫⲟⲟⲩ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲥ ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲙⲛ ⲛⲉϥⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲉⲡⲓⲕⲣⲟ ⲙⲡⲭⲓⲙⲁⲣⲟⲥ ⲙⲡⲕⲉⲇⲣⲟⲥ ⲡⲙⲁ ⲉ ⲛⲉⲣⲉⲟⲩϣⲏⲛ ⲛϩⲏⲧϥ ⲡⲙⲁ ⲉⲛⲧⲁϥⲃⲱⲕ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲛⲧⲟϥ ⲙⲛ ⲛⲉϥⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ
When Jesus had said this, he went out with his disciples and crossed the Kidron ravine to a place where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples went.
2 ⲃ̅ ⲛⲉϥⲥⲟⲟⲩⲛ ⲇⲉ ϩⲱⲱϥ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲥ ⲡⲉⲧⲛⲁⲡⲁⲣⲁⲇⲓⲇⲟⲩ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ϩⲙ ⲡⲙⲁ ⲉⲧⲙⲙⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ϩⲁϩ ⲛⲥⲟⲡ ⲁⲓⲥ ⲥⲱⲟⲩϩ ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲙⲛ ⲛⲉϥⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ
The place was well known to Judas, the betrayer, for Jesus and his disciples had often met there.
3 ⲅ̅ ⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲥ ϭⲉ ⲉⲁϥϫⲓ ⲛⲧⲉⲥⲡⲉⲓⲣⲁ ⲁⲩⲱ ϩⲉⲛϩⲩⲡⲏⲣⲉⲧⲏⲥ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲛⲁⲣⲭⲓⲉⲣⲉⲩⲥ ⲙⲛ ⲛⲉⲫⲁⲣⲓⲥⲁⲓⲟⲥ ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲉⲡⲙⲁ ⲉⲧⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲙⲛ ϩⲉⲛⲫⲁⲛⲟⲥ ⲁⲩⲱ ϩⲉⲛⲗⲁⲙⲡⲁⲥ ⲙⲛ ϩⲉⲛϩⲟⲡⲗⲟⲛ
So Judas, who had obtained the soldiers of the Roman garrison, and some guards from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
4 ⲇ̅ ⲓⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲉϥⲥⲟⲟⲩⲛ ⲛϩⲱⲃ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲉⲧⲛⲏⲩ ⲉϫⲱϥ ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲉⲧⲉⲧⲛϣⲓⲛⲉ ⲛⲥⲁ ⲛⲓⲙ
Jesus, aware of all that was coming upon him, went to meet them, and said to them, “For whom are you looking?”
5 ⲉ̅ ⲁⲩⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉ ⲉⲛϣⲓⲛⲉ ⲛⲥⲁ ⲓⲥ ⲡⲛⲁⲍⲱⲣⲁⲓⲟⲥ ⲡⲉϫⲉ ⲓⲥ ⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲡⲉ ⲛⲉϥⲁϩⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲣⲁⲧϥ ⲛⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲥ ⲡⲉⲛⲧⲁϥⲡⲁⲣⲁⲇⲓⲇⲟⲩ ⲙⲙⲟϥ
“Jesus of Nazareth,” was their answer. “I am he,” said Jesus. (Judas, the betrayer, was also standing with them.)
6 ⲋ̅ ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥϫⲟⲟⲥ ϭⲉ ⲛⲁⲩ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲥ ϫⲉ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲡⲉ ⲁⲩⲉⲓ ⲛⲥⲁ ⲡⲁϩⲟⲩ ⲁⲩϩⲉ ⲉϫⲙ ⲡⲕⲁϩ
When Jesus said ‘I am he,’ they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 ⲍ̅ ⲡⲁⲗⲓⲛ ⲟⲛ ⲁϥϫⲛⲟⲩⲟⲩ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲉⲧⲉⲧⲛϣⲓⲛⲉ ⲛⲥⲁ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲛⲧⲟⲟⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉϫⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲛⲥⲁ ⲓⲥ ⲡⲛⲁⲍⲱⲣⲁⲓⲟⲥ
So he again asked for whom they were looking, and they answered, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 ⲏ̅ ⲁϥⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲛⲁⲩ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲥ ϫⲉ ⲁⲉⲓϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲛⲏⲧⲛ ϫⲉ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲡⲉ ⲉϣϫⲉ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ϭⲉ ⲡⲉⲧⲉⲧⲛϣⲓⲛⲉ ⲛⲥⲱⲉⲓ ⲕⲁ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲧⲁⲣⲟⲩⲃⲱⲕ
“I have already told you that I am he,” replied Jesus, “so, if it is for me that you are looking, let these people go.”
9 ⲑ̅ ϫⲉⲕⲁⲥ ⲉϥⲉϫⲱⲕ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡϣⲁϫⲉ ⲉⲛⲧⲁϥϫⲟⲟϥ ϫⲉ ⲛⲉⲛⲧⲁⲕⲧⲁⲁⲩ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲙⲡⲓⲧⲁⲕⲉ ⲗⲁⲁⲩ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛϩⲏⲧⲟⲩ
This was in fulfillment of his words – ‘Of those whom you have given me I have not lost one.’
10 ⲓ̅ ⲥⲓⲙⲱⲛ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲥ ⲉⲣⲉⲟⲩⲥⲏϥⲉ ⲛⲧⲟⲟⲧϥ ⲁϥⲧⲟⲕⲙⲉⲥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥⲣⲉϩⲧ ⲡϩⲙϩⲁⲗ ⲙⲡⲁⲣⲭⲓⲉⲣⲉⲩⲥ ⲁϥⲥⲗⲡ ⲡⲉϥⲙⲁⲁϫⲉ ⲛⲟⲩⲛⲁⲙ ⲛⲉ ⲡⲣⲁⲛ ⲇⲉ ⲙⲡϩⲙϩⲁⲗ ⲡⲉ ⲙⲁⲗⲭⲟⲥ
At this, Simon Peter, who had a sword with him, drew it, and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 ⲓ̅ⲁ̅ ⲡⲉϫⲉ ⲓⲥ ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲛⲟⲩϫⲉ ⲛⲧⲉⲕⲥⲏϥⲉ ⲉⲡⲉⲥⲕⲟⲉⲓϩ ⲡϫⲱ ⲉⲛⲧⲁⲡⲁⲓⲱⲧ ⲧⲁⲁϥ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲙⲏ ⲛϯⲛⲁⲥⲟⲟϥ ⲁⲛ
But Jesus said to Peter, “Sheathe your sword. Should I not drink the cup which the Father has given me?”
12 ⲓ̅ⲃ̅ ⲧⲉⲥⲡⲉⲓⲣⲁ ⲇⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲡⲭⲓⲗⲓⲁⲣⲭⲟⲥ ⲙⲛ ⲛϩⲩⲡⲏⲣⲉⲧⲏⲥ ⲛⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓ ⲁⲩϭⲱⲡⲉ ⲛⲓⲥ ⲁⲩⲙⲟⲣϥ
So the soldiers of the garrison, with their commanding officer and the Jewish guards, arrested Jesus and bound him,
13 ⲓ̅ⲅ̅ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁⲩⲛⲧϥ ϣⲁ ⲁⲛⲛⲁⲥ ⲛϣⲟⲣⲡ ⲛⲉⲡϣⲟⲙⲛⲧ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉ ⲛⲕⲁⲓⲫⲁⲥ ⲡⲁⲣⲭⲓⲉⲣⲉⲩⲥ ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲟⲙⲡⲉ ⲉⲧⲙⲙⲁⲩ
and took him first of all to Annas. Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14 ⲓ̅ⲇ̅ ⲕⲁⲓⲫⲁⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲁⲓ ⲉⲛⲧⲁϥϫⲓ ϣⲟϫⲛⲉ ⲛⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓ ϫⲉ ⲥⲣ ⲛⲟϥⲣⲉ ⲉⲧⲣⲉⲟⲩⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲛⲟⲩⲱⲧ ⲙⲟⲩ ϩⲁ ⲡⲗⲁⲟⲥ
It was Caiaphas who had counseled the religious authorities, that it was best that one person should die for the people.
15 ⲓ̅ⲉ̅ ⲛⲉϥⲟⲩⲏϩ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲥⲁ ⲓⲥ ⲛϭⲓ ⲥⲓⲙⲱⲛ ⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲥ ⲙⲛ ⲡⲕⲉⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲡⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲧⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲛⲉⲣⲉⲡⲁⲣⲭⲓⲉⲣⲉⲩⲥ ⲥⲟⲟⲩⲛ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥⲃⲱⲕ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲉⲧⲁⲩⲗⲏ ⲙⲡⲁⲣⲭⲓⲉⲣⲉⲩⲥ ⲙⲛ ⲓⲥ
Meanwhile Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. That disciple, being well-known to the high priest, went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,
16 ⲓ̅ⲋ̅ ⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲉϥⲁϩⲉⲣⲁⲧϥ ⲡⲉ ⲃⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲣⲙ ⲡⲣⲟ ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲉⲧⲉⲣⲉⲡⲁⲣⲭⲓⲉⲣⲉⲩⲥ ⲥⲟⲟⲩⲛ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲛⲧⲉⲙⲛⲟⲟⲧⲉ ⲁϥϫⲓ ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲥ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ
while Peter stood outside by the door. Presently the other disciple – the one well-known to the high priest – went out and spoke to the portress, and brought Peter in.
17 ⲓ̅ⲍ̅ ⲧϩⲙϩⲁⲗ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲙⲛⲟⲟⲧⲉ ⲡⲉϫⲁⲥ ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲙⲏ ⲛⲧⲟⲕ ϩⲱⲱⲕ ⲟⲛ ⲛⲧⲕ ⲟⲩⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲙⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲙⲡⲉⲓⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡⲏ ϫⲉ ⲙⲙⲟⲛ
So the maidservant said to Peter, “Aren’t you also one of this man’s disciples?” “No, I am not,” he said.
18 ⲓ̅ⲏ̅ ⲛⲉⲩⲁϩⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲣⲁⲧⲟⲩ ⲛϭⲓ ⲛϩⲙϩⲁⲗ ⲙⲛ ⲛϩⲩⲡⲏⲣⲉⲧⲏⲥ ⲉⲁⲩϫⲉⲣⲉ ⲟⲩϣⲁϩ ⲉⲩⲑⲙⲟ ⲙⲙⲟⲟⲩ ϫⲉ ⲛⲉⲣⲉⲡϫⲁϥ ⲃⲃⲟⲗ ⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲥ ϩⲱⲱϥ ⲟⲛ ⲛⲉϥⲁϩⲉⲣⲁⲧϥ ⲉϥⲑⲙⲟ ⲙⲙⲟϥ
The servants and guards were standing around a charcoal fire (which they had made because it was cold), and were warming themselves. Peter, too, was with them, standing and warming himself.
19 ⲓ̅ⲑ̅ ⲡⲁⲣⲭⲓⲉⲣⲉⲩⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲁϥϫⲛⲉ ⲓⲥ ⲉⲧⲃⲉ ⲛⲉϥⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉⲧⲃⲉ ⲧⲉϥⲥⲃⲱ
The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.
20 ⲕ̅ ⲁϥⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲛⲁϥ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲥ ϫⲉ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲛⲧⲁⲓϣⲁϫⲉ ⲙⲛ ⲡⲕⲟⲥⲙⲟⲥ ϩⲛ ⲟⲩⲡⲁⲣⲣⲏⲥⲓⲁ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲛⲟⲩⲟⲓϣ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲁⲓϯ ⲥⲃⲱ ϩⲛ ⲛⲥⲩⲛⲁⲅⲱⲅⲏ ⲁⲩⲱ ϩⲙ ⲡⲉⲣⲡⲉ ⲡⲙⲁ ⲉϣⲁⲣⲉ ⲛⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓ ⲧⲏⲣⲟⲩ ⲥⲱⲟⲩϩ ⲛϩⲏⲧϥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲙⲡⲓϫⲉ ⲗⲁⲁⲩ ⲛϣⲁϫⲉ ϩⲙ ⲡϩⲱⲡ
“For my part,” answered Jesus, “I have spoken to all the world openly. I always taught in some synagogue, or in the Temple Courts, places where everyone assembles, and I never spoke of anything in secret.
21 ⲕ̅ⲁ̅ ⲁϩⲣⲟⲕ ⲕϫⲛⲟⲩ ⲙⲙⲟⲓ ⲙⲁϫⲛⲉ ⲛⲉⲛⲧⲁⲩⲥⲱⲧⲙ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩ ⲛⲉⲛⲧⲁⲓϫⲟⲟⲩ ⲛⲁⲩ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲛⲉⲧⲥⲟⲟⲩⲛ ⲛⲛⲉⲛⲧⲁⲓϫⲟⲟⲩ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ
Why question me? Question those who have listened to me as to what I have spoken about to them. They must know what I said.”
22 ⲕ̅ⲃ̅ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥϫⲟⲟⲩ ⲟⲩⲁ ⲛⲛϩⲩⲡⲏⲣⲉⲧⲏⲥ ⲉϥⲁϩⲉⲣⲁⲧϥ ⲁϥⲣⲉϩⲧ ⲓⲥ ⲛⲟⲩⲁⲁⲥ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲧⲁⲓ ⲧⲉ ⲑⲉ ⲛⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲙⲡⲁⲣⲭⲓⲉⲣⲉⲩⲥ
When Jesus said this, one of the guards, who was standing near, gave him a blow with his hand. “Do you answer the high priest like that?” he exclaimed.
23 ⲕ̅ⲅ̅ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁϥ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲥ ϫⲉ ⲉϣϫⲉ ⲕⲁⲕⲱⲥ ⲁⲓϣⲁϫⲉ ⲁⲣⲓ ⲙⲛⲧⲣⲉ ϩⲁ ⲡⲁⲡⲉⲑⲟⲟⲩ ⲉϣϫⲉ ⲕⲁⲗⲱⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲁϩⲣⲟⲕ ⲕϩⲓⲟⲩⲉ ⲉⲣⲟⲉⲓ
“If I said anything wrong, give evidence about it,” replied Jesus, “but if not, why do you strike me?”
24 ⲕ̅ⲇ̅ ⲁϥϫⲟⲟⲩϥ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓ ⲁⲛⲛⲁⲥ ⲉϥⲙⲏⲣ ϣⲁ ⲕⲁⲓⲫⲁⲥ ⲡⲁⲣⲭⲓⲉⲣⲉⲩⲥ
Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25 ⲕ̅ⲉ̅ ⲥⲓⲙⲱⲛ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲥ ⲛⲉϥⲁϩⲉⲣⲁⲧϥ ⲉϥⲑⲙⲟ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲡⲉϫⲁⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉ ⲙⲏ ⲛⲧⲟⲕ ϩⲱⲱⲕ ⲟⲛ ⲛⲧⲕ ⲟⲩⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲛⲉϥⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲁⲡⲏ ⲁⲣⲛⲁ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲙⲙⲟⲛ
Meanwhile Simon Peter was standing there, warming himself; so they said to him, “Aren’t you also one of his disciples?” Peter denied it. “No, I am not,” he said.
26 ⲕ̅ⲋ̅ ⲡⲉϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲁ ⲛⲁϥ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲛϩⲙϩⲁⲗ ⲙⲡⲁⲣⲭⲓⲉⲣⲉⲩⲥ ⲉⲩⲥⲩⲅⲅⲉⲛⲏⲥ ⲡⲉ ⲙⲡⲉⲛⲧⲁ ⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲥ ⲥⲗⲡ ⲡⲉϥⲙⲁⲁϫⲉ ϫⲉ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲁⲛ ⲡⲉ ⲛⲧⲁⲓⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲣⲟⲕ ϩⲛ ⲧⲉϣⲛⲏ ⲛⲙⲙⲁϥ
One of the high priest’s servants, a relation of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, exclaimed, “Didn’t I myself see you with him in the garden?”
27 ⲕ̅ⲍ̅ ⲡⲁⲗⲓⲛ ⲟⲛ ⲁϥⲁⲣⲛⲁ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁⲩⲁⲗⲉⲕⲧⲱⲣ ⲙⲟⲩⲧⲉ ⲛⲧⲉⲩⲛⲟⲩ
Peter again denied it; and at that moment a cock crowed.
28 ⲕ̅ⲏ̅ ⲙⲛⲛⲥⲁ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲁⲩϫⲓ ⲛⲓⲥ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲛ ⲕⲁⲓⲫⲁⲥ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲉⲡⲉⲡⲣⲁⲓⲧⲱⲣⲓⲟⲛ ⲛⲉ ϩⲧⲟⲟⲩⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲧⲟⲟⲩ ⲙⲡⲟⲩⲃⲱⲕ ⲛⲙⲙⲁϥ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲉⲡⲉⲡⲣⲁⲓⲧⲱⲣⲓⲟⲛ ϫⲉⲕⲁⲥ ⲉⲛⲛⲉⲩⲥⲱⲱϥ ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲉⲩⲉⲟⲩⲱⲙ ⲙⲡⲡⲁⲥⲭⲁ
From Caiaphas they took Jesus to the Government house. It was early in the morning. But they did not enter the Government house themselves, otherwise they might become defiled, and so be unable to eat the Passover.
29 ⲕ̅ⲑ̅ ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϣⲁⲣⲟⲟⲩ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡⲉⲓⲗⲁⲧⲟⲥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩ ⲛⲕⲁⲧⲏⲅⲟⲣⲓⲁ ⲡⲉⲧⲉⲧⲛⲓⲛⲉ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲉⲡⲉⲓⲣⲱⲙⲉ
Therefore Pilate came outside to speak to them. “What charge do you bring against this man?” he asked.
30 ⲗ̅ ⲁⲩⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲉⲩϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉ ⲉⲛⲉ ⲙⲡⲁⲓ ⲣ ⲡⲉⲑⲟⲟⲩ ⲁⲛ ⲛⲉⲛⲛⲁⲧⲁⲁϥ ⲁⲛ ⲉⲧⲟⲟⲧⲕ
“If he had not been a criminal, we should not have given him up to you,” they answered.
31 ⲗ̅ⲁ̅ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲁⲩ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡⲉⲓⲗⲁⲧⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ϫⲓⲧϥ ⲛⲧⲱⲧⲛ ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲛⲕⲣⲓⲛⲉ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲕⲁⲧⲁ ⲡⲉⲧⲛⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⲡⲉϫⲁⲩ ⲛⲁϥ ⲛϭⲓ ⲛⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲕ ⲉⲝⲉⲥⲧⲓ ⲛⲁⲛ ⲉⲙⲉⲩⲧ ⲗⲁⲁⲩ
“Take him yourselves,” said Pilate, “and try him by your own Law.” “We have no power to put anyone to death,” the authorities replied –
32 ⲗ̅ⲃ̅ ϫⲉⲕⲁⲥ ⲉϥⲉϫⲱⲕ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡϣⲁϫⲉ ⲉⲛⲧⲁⲓⲥ ϫⲟⲟϥ ⲉϥⲥⲏⲙⲁⲛⲉ ϫⲉ ϩⲛ ⲁϣ ⲙⲙⲟⲩ ⲉϥⲛⲁⲙⲟⲩ
in fulfillment of what Jesus had said when indicating the death that he was destined to die.
33 ⲗ̅ⲅ̅ ⲁϥⲃⲱⲕ ⲇⲉ ⲟⲛ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲉⲡⲉⲡⲣⲁⲓⲧⲱⲣⲓⲟⲛ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡⲉⲓⲗⲁⲧⲟⲥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥⲙⲟⲩⲧⲉ ⲉⲓⲥ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉ ⲛⲧⲟⲕ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲣⲣⲟ ⲛⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓ
After that, Pilate went into the Government house again, and calling Jesus up, asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34 ⲗ̅ⲇ̅ ⲁϥⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲥ ϫⲉ ⲉⲕϫⲱ ⲙⲡⲁⲓ ϩⲁⲣⲟⲕ ⲙⲁⲩⲁⲁⲕ ϫⲉⲛ ϩⲉⲛⲕⲟⲟⲩⲉ ⲛⲉ ⲛⲧⲁⲩϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲛⲁⲕ ⲉⲧⲃⲏⲏⲧ
“Do you ask me that yourself?” replied Jesus, “or did others say it to you about me?”
35 ⲗ̅ⲉ̅ ⲁϥⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡⲉⲓⲗⲁⲧⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲙⲏⲧⲓ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲁⲛⲅ ⲟⲩⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓ ⲡⲉⲕϩⲉⲑⲛⲟⲥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲁⲣⲭⲓⲉⲣⲉⲩⲥ ⲛⲧⲟⲟⲩ ⲛⲉ ⲛⲧⲁⲩⲧⲁⲁⲕ ⲉⲧⲟⲟⲧ ⲟⲩ ⲡⲉ ⲛⲧⲁⲕⲁⲁϥ
“Do you take me for a Jew?” was Pilate’s answer. “It is your own nation and the chief priests who have given you up to me. What have you done?”
36 ⲗ̅ⲋ̅ ⲁϥⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲥ ϫⲉ ⲧⲁⲙⲛⲧⲉⲣⲟ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲟⲩⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲁⲛ ⲧⲉ ϩⲙ ⲡⲉⲓⲕⲟⲥⲙⲟⲥ ⲉⲛⲉ ⲟⲩⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲙ ⲡⲉⲓⲕⲟⲥⲙⲟⲥ ⲧⲉ ⲧⲁⲙⲛⲧⲉⲣⲟ ⲛⲉⲩⲛⲁⲙⲓϣⲉ ⲡⲉ ⲛϭⲓ ⲛⲁϩⲩⲡⲏⲣⲉⲧⲏⲥ ϫⲉⲕⲁⲥ ⲉⲛⲛⲉⲩⲧⲁⲁⲧ ⲉⲧⲟⲟⲧⲟⲩ ⲛⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓ ⲧⲉⲛⲟⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲧⲁⲙⲛⲧⲉⲣⲟ ⲛⲟⲩⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲁⲛ ⲧⲉ ϩⲙ ⲡⲉⲓⲙⲁ
“My kingly power,” replied Jesus, “is not due to this world. If it had been so, my servants would be doing their utmost to prevent my being given up to the authorities; but my kingly power is not from the world.”
37 ⲗ̅ⲍ̅ ⲡⲉϫⲉ ⲡⲉⲓⲗⲁⲧⲟⲥ ϭⲉ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲕⲟⲩⲛ ϭⲉ ⲛⲧⲕ ⲟⲩⲣⲣⲟ ⲁϥⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲥ ϫⲉ ⲛⲧⲟⲕ ⲡⲉⲧⲕϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲁⲛⲅ ⲟⲩⲣⲣⲟ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲛⲧⲁⲩϫⲡⲟⲉⲓ ⲉⲡⲉⲓϩⲱⲃ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲧⲁⲉⲓ ⲉⲡⲕⲟⲥⲙⲟⲥ ⲉⲡⲁⲓ ϫⲉⲕⲁⲥ ⲉⲉⲓⲉⲣ ⲙⲛⲧⲣⲉ ⲛⲧⲙⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲉⲧϣⲟⲟⲡ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲧⲙⲉ ϣⲁϥⲥⲱⲧⲙ ⲉⲧⲁⲥⲙⲏ
“So you are a king after all!” exclaimed Pilate. “Yes, it is true I am a king,” answered Jesus. “I was born for this, I have come into the world for this – to bear testimony to the truth. Everyone who is on the side of truth listens to my voice.”
38 ⲗ̅ⲏ̅ ⲡⲉϫⲉ ⲡⲉⲓⲗⲁⲧⲟⲥ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩ ⲧⲉ ⲧⲙⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥϫⲉ ⲡⲁⲓ ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲟⲛ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϣⲁ ⲛⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲛϯϭⲛ ⲗⲁⲁⲩ ⲁⲛ ⲛⲁⲓⲧⲓⲁ ϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲛϩⲏⲧϥ
“What is truth?” exclaimed Pilate. After saying this, he went out to the crowd again, and said, “For my part, I find nothing with which he can be charged.
39 ⲗ̅ⲑ̅ ⲟⲩⲛⲧⲏⲧⲛ ⲇⲉ ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲛⲟⲩⲥⲱⲛⲧ ϫⲉⲕⲁⲥ ⲉⲉⲓⲉⲕⲁ ⲟⲩⲁ ⲛⲏⲧⲛ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲙ ⲡⲡⲁⲥⲭⲁ ⲧⲉⲧⲛⲟⲩⲱϣ ϭⲉ ⲧⲁⲕⲱ ⲛⲏⲧⲛ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲙⲡⲣⲣⲟ ⲛⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓ
It is, however, the custom for me to grant you the release of one man at the Passover Festival. Do you wish for the release of the king of the Jews?”

“No, not this man,” they shouted again, “but Barabbas!” This Barabbas was a robber.
