< Jonah 1 >

1 Amittai capa, Jonah koe ka tho e BAWIPA e lawk teh,
And the word of Yahweh came unto Jonah son of Amittai, saying:
2 Thaw haw, Nineveh khopui lah cet nateh, pakhinae hoi hramkhai haw. Hote khopui taminaw ni yonnae a sak awh e teh ka hmalah a pha toe telah a ti.
Arise, get thee to Nineveh the great city, and proclaim unto it, —that their wickedness, hath come up, before me.
3 Hatei Jonah ni BAWIPA koehoi Tarshish kho lah yawng hane a kâcai. A thaw teh Joppa kho lah a cei teh a pha. Tarshish kho lah ka cet e long hoi a kâhmo teh, kâcuinae phu a poe teh Cathut koehoi long kamawngnaw hoi Tarshish kho lah reirei cei hanelah long a kâcui.
But Jonah arose to flee unto Tarshish, away from the presence of Yahweh, —and went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish, so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of Yahweh.
4 Cathut ni kahlî katang poung e tuipui koe a patoun dawkvah, tuipui dawk athakaawme tuicapa a thaw teh long meimei a kamko.
But, Yahweh, hurled a great wind against the sea, —and, there arose a mighty tempest in the sea, —and, the ship, thought to be broken in pieces,
5 Hatnavah long kamawngnaw ni a taki awh teh a cathut lengkaleng a kaw awh. Long a pâhaw nahanlah hnopainaw tui dawk a tâkhawng awh. Jonah teh long e vonpui koe a kum teh hawvah mat a i.
Then were the mariners, afraid, and made outcry every man unto his own god, and they hurled the wares which were in the ship, into the sea, to lighten it of them, —but, Jonah, had gone down into the hinder parts of the vessel, and had lain down, and fallen into a sound sleep.
6 Long kaukkung a tho teh, Oe mat na ka ip e tami, bangtelane thaw haw. Na Cathut koe ratoum haw, maimouh hlout nahanlah ahni ni doum a thai talang teh atipouh.
Then drew near unto him the shipmaster, and said to him, What meanest thou, O sound sleeper? Arise, cry unto thy God, Peradventure God will bethink himself of us, that we perish not.
7 Ahnimouh ni be tho awh haw, apie yon kecu dawk ne hete hno a tâco tie panue thai nahanlah cungpam rayu a sei ati awh teh a kâpan awh. Hathnukkhu cungpam a rayu awh boteh, Jonah tak dawk a bo.
And they said—every one unto his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may get to know for whose sake this calamity is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
8 Ahnimouh ni bang e yon dawk maw hete hno a tâco dei haw. Nâ hoi maw na tho. Bang thaw maw na tawk. Api ram, api miphun maw telah a pacei awh.
Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose sake this calamity is upon us? What is thy business? and from whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
9 Jonah ni kai teh Hebru miphun, tui hoi talai kasakkung kalvan e Jehovah Cathut ka bawk e doeh telah atipouh.
And he said unto them, A Hebrew, am I, —and, Yahweh, the God of the heavens, do, I, revere, him who made the sea, and the dry land.
10 Ahnimouh ni thouk a taki awh dawkvah, bangkongmaw hettelah na sak vaw telah a pacei awh. Jonah ni Cathut koehoi ka yawng tie a kâpâpho dawkvah a panue awh.
Then did the men revere with great reverence, and said unto him, What is it thou hast done? For the men knew that, away from the presence of Yahweh, he was fleeing, —for he had told them.
11 Hatnavah tuicapa teh hoe a thaw dawkvah, ahnimouh ni tuicapa a roum nahanlah nang dawk bangmaw ka sak awh han telah a pacei awh navah,
Then said they unto him, What shall we de to thee, that the sea may cease raging over us? For, the sea, was raging more and more.
12 Kai heh na tawm awh nateh tui dawk na tâkhawng awh lawih. Hottelah na tâkhawng awh pawiteh tuicapa a roum han. Hete tûilî ka tho e teh kai kecu dawk doeh a tho tie ka panue atipouh.
And he said unto them, Take me up, and hurl me into the sea, that the sea may cease raging over you, —for I do know that, for my sake, is this great tempest upon you.
13 Hatei, long kamawngnaw ni namran lah pha thai nahanelah tha hoi tuisam a la awh eiteh, hoehoe tuicapa a thaw dawkvah bang ati thai awh hoeh torei teh,
Nevertheless the men, wrought hard, to bring it back unto the land, but could not, —for, the sea, was raging over them more and more.
14 Oe, BAWIPA kaimouh ni ngaithoumnae kâhei awh. Oe Jehovah, hete tami e a hringnae kecu dawk kaimouh koe thoenae phat hanh naseh. Yon ka tawn hoeh e tami hringnae ka thei awh dawkvah yonnae teh kaimouh koe na pen hanh. Oe BAWIPA, nang teh namamouh ni na ngai e patetlah doeh na sak telah a hram awh teh,
Then cried they unto Yahweh, and said, Ah now, Yahweh, pray let it not be that we perish for this man’s life, neither lay upon us innocent blood, —for, thou, O Yahweh, as thou hast pleased, hast ever done.
15 Jonah hah dawk a tawm awh teh tui dawk a tâkhawng awh. Hattoteh tuicapa a roum.
So they took up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, —and the sea, left off, her roaring.
16 Long kamawngnaw ni hai Cathut a taki awh teh thuengnae a sak awh hnukkhu lawk a kam awh.
Then did the men revere Yahweh with a great reverence, —and offered sacrifice to Yahweh, and vowed vows.
17 Cathut ni Jonah ka payawp hanelah tangapui a hmoun e patetlah Jonah teh tanga von thungvah hnin thum rum thum touh ao.
Now Yahweh had appointed a great fish, to swallow up Jonah, —and Jonah was in the belly of the fish, three days and three nights.
