To his Excellency, Theophilus. Many attempts have been already made to draw up an account of those events which have reached their conclusion among us,

just as they were reported to us by those who from the beginning were eye-witnesses, and afterwards became bearers of the message.

And, therefore, I also, since I have investigated all these events with great care from their very beginning, have resolved to write a connected history of them for you,

in order that you may be able to satisfy yourself of the accuracy of the story which you have heard from the lips of others.

In the reign of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the division called after Abijah. His wife, whose name was Elizabeth, was also a descendant of Aaron.

They were both righteous people, who lived blameless lives, guiding their steps by all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.

But they had no child, Elizabeth being barren; and both of them were advanced in years.

One day, when Zechariah was officiating as priest before God, during the turn of his division,

it fell to him by lot, in accordance with the practice among the priests, to go into the Temple of the Lord and burn incense;

and, as it was the Hour of Incense, the people were all praying outside.
11 Topa vantungmi khat a kung ah hong kilang a, ngimnamtui hal na mun biaktau ziatsang ah ding hi.
And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right of the Altar of Incense.
12 Zechariah in ama a mu ciang in, patau a, a tung ah launa theng hi.
Zechariah was startled at the sight and was awe-struck.
13 Ahihang vantungmi in, Zechariah: lau heak in, Pathian in na thungetna hong za zo hi, taciang na zi Elizabeth in tapa hing tu a, a min sia John, phuak tu ni hi, ci hi.
But the angel said to him, ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, whom you will call by the name John.

He will be to you a joy and a delight; and many will rejoice over his birth.

For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; he will not drink any wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit from the very hour of his birth,
16 Israel mi tampi te zong amate Pathian Topa kung ah heakkiksak tu hi.
and will reconcile many of the Israelites to the Lord their God.
17 Elijah i thaa le vangletna taw Topa mai ah pai tu a, pa te le ta te i thinsung te ahizong, thu ni ngawl te sia mi thuman te i ciimna ah ahizong; Topa atu in mihing te kinging kholsak le ki thoaikholsak tu in heakkiksak tu hi.
He will go before him in the spirit and with the power of Elijah, to reconcile fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, and so make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.’
18 Zechariah in vantungmi kung ah, nong son bang in piang takpi tu hi, ci bangbang in he tu khi ziam? banghangziam cile keima sia pasal huai khi hi, taciang ka zi zong huai mama zo hi, ci hi.
‘How can I be sure of this?’ Zechariah asked the angel. ‘For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years.’

‘I am Gabriel,’ the angel answered, ‘who stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.

And now you will be silent and unable to speak until the day when this takes place, because you did not believe what I said, though my words will be fulfilled in due course.’

Meanwhile the people were watching for Zechariah, wondering at his remaining so long in the Temple.
22 Biakinn sung pan a pusua ciang in amate tung ah bangma son thei ngawl hi: taciang biakinn sung ah mangmu hi, ci amate in he uh hi: banghangziam cile a khut taw lak a, pau thei tuan ngawl hi.
When he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision there. But Zechariah kept making signs to them, and remained dumb.
23 Thiampi nasep ni te a bo pociang in Zechariah sia a inn ah cia hi.
And, as soon as his term of service was finished, he returned home.
24 Tua zawkciang in a zi Elizabeth sia naupai a, tha nga sung bu hi,
After this his wife, Elizabeth, became pregnant and lived in seclusion for five months.
25 Tua ahikom Elizabeth in, Topa in keima atu in hi thu hong vawtsak hi, mihing te sung ah zawnsakna ka thuak nate hong laksak tu in Ama in hong ve zo hi, ci hi.
‘The Lord has done this for me,’ she said, ‘he has shown me kindness and taken away the public disgrace of childlessness under which I have been living.’

Six months later the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,
27 Ngaknu thiangtho khat, David suan Joseph taw nupa tu in zuthawl piaksa, Mary kung ah paisak hi.
to a maiden there who was engaged to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. Her name was Mary.
28 Vantungmi a kung ah hongpai a, na tung ah thupha om tahen, nangma sia a thupi mama maipha nga na hihi, Topa nang taw hong om hi: numei te sung ah thuphatoai na hihi, ci hi.
Gabriel came into her presence and greeted her, saying, ‘You have been shown great favour – the Lord is with you.’

Mary was much disturbed at his words, and was wondering to herself what such a greeting could mean,

when the angel spoke again, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God.
31 En in, nau na pai tu a, tapa nei tu ni hi, taciang a min sia Jesus phuak tu ni hi, ci hi.
And now, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will give him the name Jesus.
32 Ama sia mi thupi hi tu a, A sangbel i Tapa, kici tu hi: taciang Topa Pathian in a Pa David i kumpi tokhum pia tu hi:
The child will be great and will be called “Son of the Most High,” and the Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David,
33 Ama in Jacob suan te a tawntung in uk tu a; Ama ukna sia tawp hun nei ngawl tu hi. (aiōn )
and he will reign over the descendants of Jacob for ever; And to his kingdom there will be no end.’ (aiōn )
34 Mary in vantungmi kung ah, bangbang piang thei tu ziam, keima in pa taw ki he ngei ngawl khi hi, ci hi.
‘How can this be?’ Mary asked the angel. ‘For I have no husband.’
35 Vantungmi in zo kik a, Tha Thiangtho na tung ah hong theng tu a, A sangbel i vangletna in hong tuam tu hi: tua ahikom na sung pan in a suak tu tapa thiangtho sia Pathian Tapa kici tu hi, ci hi.
‘The Holy Spirit will descend on you,’ answered the angel, ‘and the Power of the Most High will overshadow you; and therefore the child will be called “holy,” and “Son of God.”

And Elizabeth, your cousin, is herself also expecting a son in her old age; and it is now the sixth month with her, though she is called barren;

for no promise from God will fail to be fulfilled.’

‘I am the servant of the Lord,’ exclaimed Mary. ‘Let it be with me as you have said.’ Then the angel left her.

Soon after this Mary set out, and made her way quickly into the hill-country, to a town in Judah;
40 Zechariah innsung ah tum a, Elizabeth paupui hi.
and there she went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth.
41 Taciang, Elizabeth in Mary paupuina a zak ciang in a ngil sung ah nauno tawn hi; taciang Elizabeth sia Tha Thiangtho taw kidim a:
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child moved within her, and Elizabeth herself was filled with the Holy Spirit,
42 Aw ngingtak taw, nangma sia numei te sung pan thuphatoai na hihi, taciang na ngilsung a om nauno zong thuphatoai a hihi.
and cried aloud, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is your unborn child!
43 Bangbang in ka Topa i nu sia kei kung ah hongpai ziam?
But how have I this honour, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 Banghangziam cile, en in, nong paupui na aw ka zak pociang, ka ngil sung ah nauno sia lungdamna taw tawn hi.
For, as soon as your greeting reached my ears, the child moved within me with delight!
45 A um nu sia thuphatoai a hihi: banghangziam cile tua thu te sia Topa in ama a son bang in vawt tu hi, ci hi.
Happy indeed is she who believed that the promise which she received from the Lord would be fulfilled.’
46 Mary in, ka nuntakna in Topa lamsang hi,
And Mary said: ‘My soul exalts the Lord,
47 Keima hong Ngum Pathian tung ah ka thaa a lungdam hi.
and my spirit delights in God my Saviour,
48 Banghangziam cile, nunniam kei a salnu hong ve hi: en vun, tu pan kipan in khangkhat zawk khangkhat, thuphatoai nu, hong kici tu hi.
for he has looked with favour on his humble servant girl. From now on all generations will call me blessed!
49 Banghangziam cile a vanglian Pathian in keima atu in a thupi mama te vawt zo hi; taciang a min thiangtho hi.
‘For the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
50 A hesuakna sia ama a zakta te tung ah khangkhat zawk khangkhat om tawntung hi.
He has mercy on those who revere him in every generation.
51 Ama in a ban taw thahatna hong lak zo a; a ki phasak te thinsung ngaisutna zong ki thethangsak siat zo hi.
‘Mighty are the deeds of his arm! He has scattered the self-satisfied proud,
52 Ama in a vanglian te amate tokhum pan in a nuai ah khiasuk zo a, mi nunniam te domto zo hi.
he has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and he uplifts the humble,
53 Ama in a ngilkial te thupha te taw ngilvasak zo a; a hau te khut hawm taw ki heamsak hi.
he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.
54 Ama in a hesuakna phawk tawntung in a sal Israel hu zo hi;
‘He has stretched out his hand to his servant Israel, ever mindful of his mercy,
55 I pu i pa te kung ah a sonsa bangma in, Abraham le a suan te hu hi, ci hi. (aiōn )
as he promised to our ancestors, to Abraham and his descendants for ever.’ (aiōn )
56 Taciang Mary sia Elizabeth kung ah tha thum sung om a, ama inn ah ciakik hi.
Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months, and then returned to her home.
57 Elizabeth nau sua tu hun a cin ciang in tapa nei hi.
When Elizabeth’s time came, she gave birth to a son;
58 Elizabeth kung ah Topa hesuakna lianpi kilang ci a innpam te le a mealheak te in a zak uh ciang in lungdampui tek mama uh hi.
and her neighbours and relatives, hearing of the great goodness of the Lord to her, came to share her joy.
59 Nausen ni liat a cin ciang in vunteap tan tu in hongpai a, a pa min zui in, Zechariah, ci uh hi.
A week later they met to circumcise the child, and were about to call him Zechariah after his father,
60 A nu in, hi ngawl hi; a min John kici tu hi, ci in zo hi.
when his mother spoke up, ‘No, he is to be called John.’
61 Amate in, na phung sung uh ah hibang min nei kuama om ngawl hi, ci uh hi.
‘You have no relation of that name!’ they exclaimed;
62 Taciang amate in a pa khut taw lak uh a, bangbang ci nuam ni ziam, ci dong uh hi.
and they made signs to the child’s father, to find out what he wished the child to be called.
63 Zechariah in lai at natu ngen a, a min sia John hi, ci at hi. Taciang a vekpi in lamdangsa mama uh hi.
Asking for a writing tablet, he wrote the words – “His name is John.” Everyone was surprised
64 Taciang thatkhatthu in a kam ki hong in a lei hong suakta kik ahikom, pau in Pathian pok hi.
and immediately Zechariah recovered his voice and the use of his tongue, and began to bless God.
65 A kim a om theampo tung ah lau na hong theng a; tua thu sia Judah kual mualtung khuano theampo ah ki zel hi.
All their neighbours were awe-struck at this, and throughout the hill-country of Judea the whole story was much talked about.
66 Tua thu a za theampo in amate thinsung tek ah keam uh a, hisia bangbang nausen hi peuma tu ziam! ci tek uh hi. Taciang Topa khut sia Ama tung ah om hi.
All who heard it kept it in mind, asking one another – ‘What can this child be destined to become?’ For the Power of the Lord was with him.
67 John i pa Zechariah sia Tha Thiangtho taw kidim hi, taciang maisang thu a pualak na ah,
Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and, speaking under inspiration, said:
68 Israel te Topa Pathian minthang tahen; banghangziam cile a mite ve in hun zo hi,
‘Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, who has visited his people and wrought their deliverance,
69 Eite atu in ngupna kii sia a sal David inn sung pan in hong suaksak zo hi;
and has raised up for us the strength of our salvation in the house of his servant David –
70 Leitung kipat lai pan in kamsang thiangtho te kam zang in son zo hi: (aiōn )
as he promised by the lips of his holy prophets of old – (aiōn )
71 I ngal te le hong ensan te khutsung pan in eite ngum tu in ahizong;
salvation from our enemies and from the hands of all who hate us,
72 I pu i pa te tung ah vawt tu in thu a ciam sa hesuakna le thuciam thiangtho phawk tawntung tu in ahizong;
showing mercy to our ancestors, and mindful of his sacred covenant.
73 I pa Abraham tung ah a kiciamna thukham,
This was the oath which he swore to our ancestor Abraham –
74 Eite tung ah pia tu le i ngal te khutsung pan in hong suaktasak tu a, lau na om ngawl in,
that we should be rescued from the hands of our enemies,
75 I nuntaksung theampo Ama mai ah thianthona le thutang suana taw Ama na i sep thei natu a hihi.
and should serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness, in his presence all our days.
76 Taciang nang, nausen, A sangbel i kamsang, hong ci tu hi: banghangziam cile Topa mai ah a lampi puakhol tu in pai tu hi;
And you, child, will be called prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to make ready his way,
77 A mite tung ah, amate mawna pan in mawmaisak na tungtawn in ngupna thu hesak tu in,
to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins,
78 I Pathian i a neam thuthiamna tungtawn in; van pan zing nisuak bang in hong ve zo hi,
through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the dawn will break on us from heaven,
79 Khuazing le thi na lim sung ah a to te khuavak pia tu le eite i peang te thinnopna lampi ah hong makai tu hi, ci hi.
to give light to those who live in darkness and the shadow of death, and guide our feet into the way of peace.’
80 Nausen sia khang a, thaa lam ah thahat hi, Israel te kung ah a kilaak mateng duisung ah om hi.
The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he lived in the wilds until the time came for his appearance before Israel.
