< 1 Samuel 8 >

And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he appointed his sons judges to Israel;
2 Te vaengah a ca cacuek ming tah Joel, a pabae ah Abijah te om tih Beersheba ah lai a tloek.
and the name of his firstborn son was, Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah, —they were judges in Beer-sheba.
3 A ca rhoi te amah long, amah long ah a pongpa rhoi kolla mueluemnah hnukah phael tih kapbaih a loh rhoi dongah laitloeknah khaw a haeh sak rhoi.
Howbeit his sons walked not in his ways, but stooped to extortion, —and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
4 Te dongah Israel kah a hamca rhoek tah boeih coi uh thae tih Ramah kah Samuel te a paan uh.
So then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, —and came unto Samuel, to Ramah;
5 Te phoeiah anih te, “Na patong coeng tih na ca rhoi te na longpuei ah a pongpa moenih ke, kaimih ham manghai khueh laeh, namtom cungkuem bangla kaimih lai aka tloek ham,” a ti nauh.
and said unto him—Lo! thou, art old, and, thy sons, walk not in thy ways: Now, appoint for us a king to judge us, like all the nations.
6 Tedae ol te Samuel mik ah lolh coeng. “Kaimih lai aka tloek la kaimih taengah manghai m'pae,” a ti uh van neh Samuel tah BOEIPA taengah thangthui.
But the thing was displeasing in the eyes of Samuel, when they said, Give unto us a king to judge us. So Samuel prayed unto Yahweh.
7 Te vaengah BOEIPA loh Samuel te, “A cungkuem la pilnam ol te hnatun lah, nang taengah a cal uh te nang n'hnawt uh dongah moenih. Tedae kai he ni amih kah manghai lamloh n'hnawt uh.
And Yahweh said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people, in all that they shall say unto thee, —for, not thee, have they rejected, but, me, have they rejected, from being king over them.
8 Egypt lamkah amih ka caeh puei khohnin lamloh tahae khohnin duela tekah khoboe te boeih a saii uh. Kai he n'hnoo uh tih Pathen tloe rhoek taengah tho a thueng uh. Amih tangkhuet loh nang taengah khaw a saii uh.
According to all the doings which they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt, even until this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so, are they doing even unto thee.
9 Te dongah amih ol te hnatun mai. Tedae amih te rhalrhing rhoe rhalrhing sak lamtah manghai kah laitloeknah te amih taengah thui pah. Anih te amih soah manghai bitni,” a ti nah.
Now, therefore, hearken to their voice, —save that thou, enter protest, against them, and tell them the manner of the king who will reign over them.
10 Te dongah Samuel loh BOEIPA ol boeih te amah taeng lamloh manghai aka bih pilnam taengah a thui.
So then Samuel spake all the words of Yahweh unto the people, who were asking of him, a king.
11 Te vaengah, “Nangmih soah aka manghai ham manghai kah laitloeknah tah he tlam he om ni. Na ca rhoek te a loh vetih leng dongah amah ham tloep a khueh ni. A marhang caem yueng la leng hmai ah yong uh ni.
And he said, This, will be the manner of the king who will reign over you, —Your sons, will he take and appoint for himself, as his charioteers and as his horsemen, and they shall run before his chariots;
12 Te phoeiah a tawn te phoh pah ham, a cangah te aka ah pah ham, caemtloek hnopai neh leng dongkah hnopai aka saii ham te thawngkhat kah mangpa, sawmnga kah mangpa te a khueh ni.
and he will appoint for himself, princes of thousands, and princes of fifties, —and to plough his fields, and to reap his harvest, and to make his weapons of war, and the instruments of his chariots;
And, your daughters, will he take, —as perfumers and as cooks, and as bakers;
14 Na khohmuen neh na misur khaw, na olive then te a rhawt vetih a sal taengla a paek ni.
And, your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, the best of them, will he take, and give to his servants;
15 Na cangtii neh na misur te parha ah pakhat a loh vetih a imkhoem neh a sal taengla a paek ni.
And, your seed, and your vineyards, will he tithe, and give to his courtiers and to his servants;
And, your men-servants, and your maidservants, and your oxen, even the goodliest, and your asses, will he take, —and put them to his work;
Your flocks, will he tithe, —and, ye yourselves, shall become his servants.
Then will ye make outcry, in that day, because of your king whom ye have chosen for yourselves, —and Yahweh will not answer you, in that day.
19 Tedae Samuel ol te hnatun ham pilnam loh a aal uh tih, “Moenih, manghai pakhat tah kaimih soah om saeh.
But the people refused to hearken unto the voice of Samuel, —and they said—Nay! but, a king, shall be over us:
20 Te daengah ni kaimih khaw namtom rhoek bangla boeih ka om uh eh. Ka manghai long tah kaimih ham lai a tloek vetih kaimih hmai ah lamhma ni, kaimih kah caemtloek khaw a tloek ni,” a ti uh.
so shall, even we, become like all the nations, —and our king shall judge us, and go forth before us, and fight our battles.
21 Pilnam ol te Samuel loh boeih a yaak vaengah tah BOEIPA kah a hna dongla a thui pah.
And Samuel heard all the words of the people, —and spake them in the ears of Yahweh.
22 Tedae Samuel te BOEIPA loh, “Amih ol te hnatun lamtah manghai pakhat tah amih taengah manghai sak,” a ti nah. Te phoeiah Israel hlang rhoek te Samuel loh, “Hlang boeih loh amah kho la cet laeh saeh,” a ti nah.
And Yahweh said unto Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel: Go ye, every man to his own city.
