< 1 Samuel 4 >

1 Te phoeiah Samuel ol Israel pum taengla pawk. Te dongah Israel tah caem khuikah Philisti te mah hamla cet tih Ebenezer ah rhaeh uh. Te vaengah Philisti tah Aphek ah rhaeh.
And the word of Samuel became known to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Eben-ha'ezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.
2 Philisti khaw Israel mah ham rhong a pai uh tih caemtloek khaw a yaal uh. Te vaengah Israel tah Philisti mikhmuh ah yawk tih hlang thawng li tluk te lohma li ah maehlaep bangla a tloek uh.
And the Philistines put themselves in battle-array against Israel; and the battle became general, and Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew on the battle-ground, in the field, about four thousand men.
3 Te dongah pilnam loh rhaehhmuen la a pawk uh vaengah Israel khuikah a hamca rhoek te, “Tihnin ah tah BOEIPA loh balae tih mamih he Philisti mikhmuh ah n'yawk sak? BOEIPA kah paipi thingkawng te Shiloh lamloh mamih taengla lo uh sih. Mamih lakli la ha pawk daengah ni thunkha kut lamkah mamih n'khang eh?,” a ti uh.
And when the people were come back into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lord smitten us this day before the Philistines? Let us bring over to us out of Shiloh the ark of the covenant of the Lord, that it may come in the midst of us, and deliver us out of the hand of our enemies.
4 Te dongah pilnam te Shiloh la a tueih tih te lamkah Caempuei BOEIPA kah paipi thingkawng, kherubim kah a ngol thil te a koh uh. Te vaengah Eli ca rhoi Hophni neh Phinekha khaw Pathen kah paipi thingkawng taengah om rhoi.
So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought away from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, who dwelleth over the cherubim: and the two sons of 'Eli, Chophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 BOEIPA kah paipi thingkawng te rhaehhmuen la ha pawk vaengah Israel pum loh tamlung neh muep yuhui uh tih diklai khaw pangngawl.
And it happened when the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, that all Israel set up a great shout, so that the earth trembled.
6 Tamlung ol te Philisti loh a yaak vaengah, “Hebrew rhaehhmuen ah mebang tamlung ol lae rhup rhup aka khap uh te,” a ti uh. Tedae rhaehhmuen la BOEIPA thingkawng ha pawk te a ming uh.
And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shouting, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shouting in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the Lord was come into the camp.
7 Te vaengah Philisti rhoek loh, “Rhaehhmuen khuila Pathen ha pawk coeng,” a ti uh tih a rhih uh. Te dongah, “Anunae, hlaem hlavai ah khaw mamih taengah he bang he a om moenih.
And the Philistines were afraid; for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for the like of this hath not been, yesterday or the day before.
8 Anunae mamih aih he, hmasoe cungkuem neh khosoek ah Egypt aka ngawn Pathen, aka khuet Pathen kut lamloh ulonglae mamih ng'huul eh?
Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.
9 Tanglue uh lamtah Philisti hlang bangla om uh, nangmih taengah a thohat bangla Hebrew taengah na thoatat uh ve. Hlang bangla om uh lamtah tloek uh,” a ti uh.
Be strong, and act like men, O Philistines, so that ye become not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been servants to you: therefore act like men, and fight.
10 Tedae Philisti rhoek loh a tloek uh vaengah Israel yawk tih hlang boeih loh amah kah dap la rhaelrham uh. Te vaengah hmasoe len muep om tih Israel rhalkap thawng sawmthum tah vik cungku uh.
And the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were smitten, and they fled every man unto his tent: and the defeat was very great; and there fell of Israel thirty thousand men on foot.
11 Pathen kah thingkawng te vik a loh uh tih Eli ca rhoi Hophni neh Phinekha khaw duek.
And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of 'Eli, Chophni and Phinehas, died also.
12 Te vaengah caem lamkah Benjamin hlang pakhat te yong tih hnin at neh Shiloh a pha. Tedae a himbai te a phen, tih diklai neh a lu a phul thil.
And there ran a man of Benjamin from the battlefield, and came to Shiloh on the same day, with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head.
13 A pha vaengah Eli tah longpuei hmatoeng bawt kah ngolkhoel dongah pahoi ana ngol. A lungbuei a om dongah Pathen thingkawng ham te a thuen doela a tawt. Te vaengah khopuei ah puen hamla hlang ha pai tih khopuei khaw boeih pang.
And when he came, lo, 'Eli was sitting upon a chair by the wayside watching; for his heart was anxious for the ark of God. And when the man came to tell it in the city, all the city cried out.
14 Pangngawlnah ol te Eli loh a yaak vaengah, “Me lamkah hlangping ol lae he,” a ti nah. Te vaengah hlang koe halo tih Eli taengah a puen pah.
And when 'Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this multitude? And the man came in hastily, and told it to 'Eli.
15 Eli tah kum sawmko kum rhet a lo ca coeng dongah a mik hmaang tih hmu thai voel pawh.
Now 'Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were fixed, so that he could not see.
16 Tekah hlang loh Eli taengah, “Caem lamkah ka pawk coeng. Kai khaw tihnin ah caem lamkah ka rhaelrham,” a ti nah. Te vaengah, “Kai ca taengah mebang hno lae aka thoeng,” a ti nah.
And the man said unto 'Eli, I am the person that came from the battlefield, and I myself fled from the battlefield today. And he said, What was it that took place, my son?
17 Ol aka phong loh a doo tih, “Israel te Philisti mikhmuh ah a rhaelrham van hatah pilnam khuiah lucik la muep om tih nang ca rhoi Hophni neh Phinekha khaw duek coeng, Pathen kah thingkawng khaw a khuen coeng,” a ti nah.
And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath also been a great slaughter among the people, and also thy two sons, Chophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God hath been taken.
18 Pathen kah thingkawng te a poek vaengah ngolkhoel dong lamloh vongka hmatoeng ah a hnuk la palet uh tih a rhawn a tlawt pah. Tekah hlang patong aka duek te rhih. Tedae amah loh Israel te kum sawmli lai a tloek pah.
And it came to pass, when he mentioned the ark of God, that he fell from off the chair backward by the side of the gate, and his neck was broken, and he died; for the man was old, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
19 Te vaengah Phinekha kah a yuu, amah langa tah vawn tih om tom coeng. Te vaengah olthang te Pathen thingkawng a khuen khaw, a marhang neh a va duek khaw a yaak. Te dongah sop uh tih camoe pahoi om. Tedae anih te a kuihlam loh a voeih.
And his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings concerning that the ark of God had been taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she sank down and gave birth; for her pains came suddenly upon her.
20 A duek tue vaengah tah a taengkah aka pai rhoek loh, “Capa na cun coeng dongah rhih boeh,” a ti nauh. Tedae doo voel pawt tih a lungbuei pael voel pawh.
And at the moment of her dying, the women that stood around her spoke [unto her], Fear not; for a son hast thou born. But she answered not, nor did she take it to heart.
21 Tedae Pathen kah thingkawng a loh uh dongah Israel kah a thangpomnah khaw, a marhang khaw, a va khaw khum coeng,” a ti tih camoe te Ikhabot a sui.
And she named the child I-chabod, saying, Glory is departed from Israel; because of the taking away of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
22 Te dongah, “Pathen kah thingkawng a loh uh dongah Israel kah thangpomnah khaw khum van,” a ti.
And she said, Glory is departed from Israel; for the ark of God hath been taken away.
