1 Samuel 21

Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And when Ahimelech met David, he trembled and asked him, “Why are you alone? Why is no one with you?”

2 David loh khosoih Ahimelek te, “Manghai loh ol ng'uen tih, 'Kai loh nang kan tueih te khaw, nang kang uen te khaw, olka he hlang pakhat long khaw ming boel saeh, tongmang hmuen pakhat kah camoe rhoek te ka ming sak coeng,’ a ti.

“The king has given me a mission,” David replied. “He told me no one is to know about the mission or charge. And I have directed my young men to meet me at a certain place.

3 Na kut dongah vaidam panga tah om aya Na hmuh duen khaw ka kut dongah m'pae laeh,” a ti nah.

Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever can be found.”

4 Khosoih loh David te a doo tih, “Ka kut dongah rhaengpuei buh tah om pawt dae, camoe rhoek ni huta taeng lamloh a cue uh atah buh cim om,” a ti nah.

“There is no common bread on hand,” the priest replied, “but there is some consecrated bread—provided that the young men have kept themselves from women.”

5 Te vaengah David loh khosoih te a doo tih amah taengah, “Huta khaw hlaem hlavai kah ka caeh bangla kaimih lamloh cue uh. Te dongah camoe rhoek kah hnopai tah cimcaihnah neh om. Amah te rhongingnah longpuei ah cet sitoe cakhaw hnopai dongah tahae khohnin duela cim uh ngai bal pueng,” a ti nah.

David answered, “Women have indeed been kept from us, as is usual when I set out. And the equipment of the young men is holy, as it is even on common missions, and all the more at this time.”

6 Te vaengah buh a om pawt dongah BOEIPA mikhmuh lamkah a rhoe a hmai buh cim te khosoih loh David a paek. Te khohnin ah buh bae neh a tho ham koi te vik a loh coeng.

So the priest gave him the consecrated bread, since there was no bread there but the Bread of the Presence, which had been removed from before the LORD and replaced with hot bread on the day it was taken away.

7 Tekah khohnin ah Saul sal rhoek khui lamkah hlang pakhat, Saul kah tudawn boei, a ming ah Edom hoelDoeg khaw BOEIPA mikhmuh ah cue uh.

Now one of Saul’s servants was there that day, detained before the LORD. And his name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief shepherd for Saul.

8 Te phoeiah Ahimelek te David loh, “Na kut ah caai neh cunghang mai khaw a om moenih a he, manghai ol he tokrhat la a om dongah ka kut dongah ka cunghang khaw, kamah kah hnopai khaw ka loh moenih,” a ti nah.

Then David asked Ahimelech, “Is there not a spear or sword on hand here? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business was urgent.”

9 Khosoih loh, “Elah ah na ngawn Philisti Goliath kah cunghang tah hnisui hlip ah himbai neh ka cun, te te na loh atah namah ham lo, he phoeiah tah he ah he a tloe om pawh,” a ti nah. Te dongah David loh, “Te bang te a om moenih, te te kamah taengla m'pae,” a ti nah.

The priest replied, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is here; it is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you want, you may take it. For there is no other but this one.” And David said, “There is none like it; give it to me.”

10 Tekah khohnin ah David te hlah uh tih Saul mikhmuh lamloh aka yong te Gath manghai Akhish taengla pawk.

That day David fled from Saul and went to Achish king of Gath.

11 Tedae anih te Akhish kah sal rhoek loh, “Khohmuen manghai David pawt nim he? lamnah neh a doo uh tih, 'Saul loh a thawng, a thawng hil, David loh a thawngrha, a thawngrha hil a ngawn,’ a ti uh te anih ham pawt nim?,” a ti uh.

But the servants of Achish said to him, “Is this not David, the king of the land? Did they not sing about him in their dances, saying: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’?”

12 Tekah olka te David loh a thinko ah a khueh tih Gath manghai Akhish mikhmuh ah mat a rhih.

Now David took these words to heart and was very much afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

13 Te dongah amih mikhmuh ah a om a ih te a thovael tih amih kut dongah yan uh. Vongka thohkhaih dongah a khoeih a khoeih tih a tamkai te a hmuimul dongla a tlak sak.

So he changed his behavior before them and feigned madness in their hands; he scratched on the doors of the gate and let his saliva run down his beard.

14 Te dongah Akhish loh a sal rhoek taengah, “So uh lah, kekah hlang ke pavai ni ke, ba ham nim anih te kai taengla nan khuen uh?

Then Achish said to his servants, “Look, you can see that the man is insane! Why have you brought him to me?

15 Pavai ka nai tih nim pavai he kai taengla nang khuen uh? Kai im khuila kun saeh a he?,” a ti nah.

Am I in need of madmen, that you have brought this man to rave in my presence? Must this man come into my house?”
