Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s brothers, and spoke with them and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,
2 Shekhem boei boeih kah a hna dongah khaw, “Jerubbaal ca rhoek hlang sawmrhih boeih loh nangmih soaha ngol ham neh hlang pakhat bueng loh nangmih soaha ngol ham te nangmih ham melae aka then bet eh? Te dongah kai khaw na rhuh na saa van ni tite poek uh,” a ti nah.
“Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are seventy persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”
3 Te olka boeih te Shekhem boei rhoek boeih kah hna dongah tah, “Anih kah a nupu pai ni,” a ti uh tih, “Anih te mah manuca ni,” a ti uh dongah Abimelek taengla a lungbuei boeih hooi uh.
His mother’s brothers spoke of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words. Their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, “He is our brother.”
4 Te dongah Baalberith im lamkah tangka sawmrhih te aniha paek uh. Te nen te Abimelek loh hlang hoeng rhoek neh aka soetae rhoek te a paang tih a hnukah bang uh.
They gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal Berith, with which Abimelech hired vain and reckless fellows who followed him.
5 Ophrah kah a napa im la a pawk vaengah a manuca rhoek, Jerubbaal ca rhoek hlang sawmrhih te lungto pakhat dongah rhenten a ngawn. Tedae Jerubbaal capaa poeih Jotham tah thuh uh tih sueng.
He went to his father’s house at Ophrah, and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, being seventy persons, on one stone; but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself.
6 Shekhem boei rhoek boeih neh Bethmillo boeih loh a tingtun uh phoeiah cet uh tih Abimelek te Shekhem kah aka pai thingnu kaepah manghai laa manghai sakuh.
All the men of Shechem assembled themselves together with all the house of Millo, and went and made Abimelech king by the oak of the pillar that was in Shechem.
7 Tedae Jotham taenglaa puen pa uh vaengah tah Gerizim tlang som la luei tih pai. Te phoeiah a ola huel tiha pang doela, “Shekhem boei rhoek ka ol he hnatun uh lah te daengah ni Pathen loh nangmih ol tea hnatun eh.
When they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim and lifted up his voice, cried out, and said to them, “Listen to me, you men of Shechem, that God may listen to you.
8 Thing rhoek loh a manghai situi koelh ham cet cet uh tih olive taengah, 'Kaimih soah manghai khaw manghai mai laeh he,’ a ti na uh.
The trees set out to anoint a king over themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’
9 Tedae amih te olive loh, “Pathen neh hlang aka thangpom ka maehhloi he ka toeng mai vetih thing rhoek soah vikvuek ham ka cet aya?' a ti nah.
“But the olive tree said to them, ‘Should I stop producing my oil, with which they honour God and man by me, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’
10 Thing rhoek loh thaibu taengah khaw, “Namah halo lamtah kaimih soah manghai mai laeh,” a ti na uh.
“The trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and reign over us.’
11 Tedae amih te thaibu loh, “Ka didip neh ka thaih then he ka toeng mai vetih thing rhoek soah vikvuek ham ka cet aya? ' a ti nah.
“But the fig tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’
12 Misur taengah khaw thing rhoek loh, “Nang halo lamtah kaimih soah manghai khaw manghai mai laeh,’ a ti na uh.
“The trees said to the vine, ‘Come and reign over us.’
13 Tedae amih te misur loh, 'Pathen neh hlang ko aka hoe sak ka misur thai te ka toeng mai vetih thing rhoek soah vikvuek ham ka cet aya?,’ a ti nah.
“The vine said to them, ‘Should I leave my new wine, which cheers God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’
14 Thing rhoek boeih long te tangkul taengla, 'Nang halo lamtah kaimih soah manghai mai saw,’ a ti na uh.
“Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘Come and reign over us.’
15 Tangkul long tah thing rhoek taengah, 'Na oltak nen ni nangmih sokah manghai la kai n'koelh uh van atah, halo uh lamtah ka hlipkhup ah ying uh. Te pawt koinih tangkul puep lamkah hmai puek vetih Lebanon lamphai khaw a hlawp ni,” a ti nah.
“The bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’
16 Tahae ah oltak neha khangmai la na saii uh tih Abimelek te na manghai sak uh coeng atah Jerubbaal ham neh a imkhui ham hnothen nim na saii uh tih a taengah a kut neh aka tiing lam nim na saii uh.
“Now therefore, if you have dealt truly and righteously, in that you have made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him according to the deserving of his hands
17 A pa loh nangmih hama vathoh tiha hmai ah a hinglua voeih dongah nangmih te Midian kut lamloh n'huul.
(for my father fought for you, risked his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian;
18 Tedae nangmih loh tihnin ah a pa cako te na thoh thil uh tih a ca rhoek hlang sawmrhih te lungto pakhat dongah na ngawn uh. A salnu kah a ca Abimelek vik te na manuca na ti uh tih Shekhem boei rhoek soah na manghai sakuh.
and you have risen up against my father’s house today and have slain his sons, seventy persons, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);
19 Tihnin Jerubbaal taeng neh a cako taengah oltak neha khangmai la na saii uh coeng atah Abimelek dongah kohoe uh lamtah anih khaw nangmih dongaha kohoe saeh.
if you then have dealt truly and righteously with Jerubbaal and with his house today, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you;
20 Abimelek lamloh hmai puek tih Shekhem boei rhoek neh Bethmillo tea hlawp pawt atah Shekhem boei rhoek neh Bethmillo lamkah hmai aka puek loh Abimelek te hlawp saeh,” a ti nah.
but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and devour the men of Shechem and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem and from the house of Millo and devour Abimelech.”
21 Te ah kho a sak te a maya Abimelek kah mikhmuh la a om dongah Jotham loh rhaelrham tih aka yong te Beer la pawk.
Jotham ran away and fled, and went to Beer and lived there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
22 Abimelek te Israel soah kum thum boei.
Abimelech was prince over Israel three years.
23 Tedae Pathen loh Abimelek laklo neh Shekhem boei rhoek kah laklo ah mueihla thaea tueih pah dongah Shekhem boei rhoek loh Abimelek te a hnukpoh thil uh.
Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech,
24 Te tah Jerubbaal ca rhoek hlang sawmrhih te kuthlahnaha khuen thil tih a aka ngawn a manuca Abimelek so neh a manuca rhoek ngawn sak ham a kut aka thoh Shekhem boei rhoek soah a thii phu a suk ham dongah ni.
that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother who killed them, and on the men of Shechem who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.
25 Abimelek te a moeh uh tih tlang som ah aka rhongngol Shekhem boei rhoek loh longuei ah aka pongpa boeih te a rheth uh te Abimelek taenglaa puen pah.
The men of Shechem set an ambush for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who came along that way by them; and Abimelech was told about it.
26 Te vaengah Ebed capa Gaal neh a manuca rhoek tah ha pawk tih Shekhem laa kat uh hatah Shekhem boei rhoek loh anih dongah pangtung uh.
Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brothers and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.
27 Loa pha uh vaengah misura hoel uh tiha hoem uh dongah cangkoeinaha saii uh. Te phoeiah a pathen im la kun uh tiha caaka ok uh phoeiah Abimelek tea tap uh.
They went out into the field, harvested their vineyards, trod the grapes, celebrated, and went into the house of their god and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech.
28 Te vaengah Ebed capa Gaal loh, “Abimelek te unim, anih taengah thohtat ham khaw Shekhem te unim?, Jerubbaal capa, a hlangtawt khaw Zebul moenih a? Shekhem napa Hamor hlang rhoek taengah thotat uh. Balae tih mamih loh anih taengah n'thotat uh eh?
Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Isn’t he the son of Jerubbaal? Isn’t Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem, but why should we serve him?
29 Unim mah, pilnam he ka kut dongah han tloeng atah Abimelek ngawn tah ka rhoe vetih Abimelek te, “Na caempuei khaw kuk lamtah ha mop lah,’ ka ti bitni,” a ti nah.
I wish that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech.” He said to Abimelech, “Increase your army and come out!”
30 Ebed capa Gaal ol te khopuei mangpa Zebul loh a yaak vaengah a thintoeka sai pah.
When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger burnt.
31 Te dongah puencawn rhoek te Abimelek taengaha huep la a tueih tih, 'Ebed capa Gaal neh a manuca rhoek loh Shekhem la ha pawk uh te, khopuei ah nang aka dum ham ni ke.
He sent messengers to Abimelech craftily, saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem; and behold, they incite the city against you.
32 Te dongah namah neh namah taengkah pilnam loh khoyin ah thoo uh lamtah lohma ah ana rhongngol uh laeh.
Now therefore, go up by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field.
33 Mincanga pha tih khomika cuk vaengah thoo uh lamtah khopuei te cuuk thil uh. Amah khaw, amah taengkah pilnam khaw nang taengla ha pawk vaengah na kut loh a tong sarhui bangla anih te saii uh,” a ti nah.
It shall be that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, you shall rise early and rush on the city. Behold, when he and the people who are with him come out against you, then may you do to them as you shall find occasion.”
34 Te dongah Abimelek neh a taengkah pilnam pum te khoyin ah a thoh tih Shekhem ah than li la a rhongngol uh.
Abimelech rose up, and all the people who were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.
35 Te dongah Ebed capa Gaal te moe phai tih khopuei vongka kah thohka ah pai. Te vaengah Abimelek neh a pilnam te rhong lamkah ha thoo.
Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city. Abimelech rose up, and the people who were with him, from the ambush.
36 Pilnam te a hmuh vaengah Zebul te Gaal loh, “Pilnam loh tlang som lamkah ha suntla ke,” a ti nah. Tedae Zebul loh, “Nang khaw mah, tlang kah mueihlip maco hlang bangla na hmuh,” a ti nah.
When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Behold, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains.” Zebul said to him, “You see the shadows of the mountains as if they were men.”
37 Tedae Gaal loh a thui te koepa khoep tih, “Khohmuen laklung khui lamloh pilnam suntla tih kutyaek thingnu longpuei lamloh rhoi at ha thoeng ke,” a ti nah.
Gaal spoke again and said, “Behold, people are coming down by the middle of the land, and one company comes by the way of the oak of Meonenim.”
38 Te vaengah Zebul loh, “'Anih taengah thohtat ham khaw Abimelek te unim,’ na ti vaengkah na ka te tahae atah melam a om, anih he a pilnam neh na sawtsit thil moenih a? Tahae ah paan to lamtah amah ke hnuei kanoek saw,” a ti nah.
Then Zebul said to him, “Now where is your mouth, that you said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Isn’t this the people that you have despised? Please go out now and fight with them.”
39 Te dongah Gaal tah Shekhem boei rhoek kah mikhmuh la moe phai tih Abimelek tea hnueih.
Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.
40 Tedae anih te Abimelek loh a hloem tanglai atah a mikhmuh lamloh rhaelrham tih vongka thohka due, hmalaem la muep cungku uh.
Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many fell wounded, even to the entrance of the gate.
41 Abimelek te Arumah ah kho a sak ngawn dae Shekhem ah kho aka sa khui lamkah Gaal neh a manuca rhoek te Zebul loh vik a haek.
Abimelech lived at Arumah; and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brothers, that they should not dwell in Shechem.
42 A vuen ah om tih pilnam te pong la a caeh ham vaeng daengah Abimelek taenglaa puen pauh.
On the next day, the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.
43 Te dongah pilnam tea loh tih hlop thum laa boel phoeiah lohma aha rhongngol sak. Te vaengah khopuei lamkah pilnam ha pawk te lawta hmuh dongah amih te a pai thil tiha tloek.
He took the people and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field; and he looked, and behold, the people came out of the city. So, he rose up against them and struck them.
44 Te vaengah Abimelek neh a rhoi rhoek te capit uh tih khopuei vongka kah thohka te a pai thiluh. Tedae rhoi nit long te lohma kah rhoek te boeiha capit thil uh tiha tloek uh.
Abimelech and the companies that were with him rushed forward and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city; and the two companies rushed on all who were in the field and struck them.
45 Abimelek loh khohnin yung ah khopuei te a vathoh thil tih khopuei tea loh. A khuikah pilnam te khawa ngawn tih khopuei tea palet phoeiah lungkaeha phul thil.
Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city and killed the people in it. He beat down the city and sowed it with salt.
46 Boei kuirhang boeih loh a yaak uh vaengah Berith im kah hmuensang la ael uh.
When all the men of the tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered into the stronghold of the house of Elberith.
47 Tedae boei kuirhang rhoek loh boeiha coi uh thae te Abimelek taenglaa puen pauh.
Abimelech was told that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.
48 Te dongah Abimelek loh a taengkah pilnam boeih te Zalmon tlang la a caeh puei. Te vaengah Abimelek loh a kut dongkah hai tea loh tih thing hlaenga saih. Thing hlaeng te a thueng tih a laengpang dongaha khueh. Te phoeiah a taengkah pilnam te, “Ka saii he so uh lamtah kai bangla koe saii uh,” a ti nah.
Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up, and laid it on his shoulder. Then he said to the people who were with him, “What you have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done!”
49 Te dongah pilnam boeih long khaw thing hlaeng rhipa saih uh tih Abimelek hnuka vai uh. Te phoeiah hmuensang te a hong thil uh tih hmuensang te hmaia hlup uh vaengah tah kuirhang huta tongpa hlang thawngkhat tluk boeih duek uh.
All the people likewise each cut down his bough, followed Abimelech, and put them at the base of the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
50 Abimelek te Thebez la cet tiha rhaeh thil phoeiah Thebez tea loh.
Then Abimelech went to Thebez and encamped against Thebez, and took it.
51 Tedae khopuei khui ah sarhi rhaltoengim pakhat om tih huta tongpa boeih neh khopuei kah boei boeih loh te lam te rhaelrham uh tih a hnuk te malh a buk phoeiah rhaltoengim kah imphu la luei uh.
But there was a strong tower within the city, and all the men and women of the city fled there, and shut themselves in, and went up to the roof of the tower.
52 Te phoeiah rhaltoengim te Abimelek loh a paan tiha vathoh thil. Te dongah hmai neh hoeh hamla rhaltoengim kah thohka la thoeih.
Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it, and came near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
53 Tedae Abimelek kah a lu te huta pakhat loh sumngol phaklung neh a dae pah tih a luhiha po pah.
A certain woman cast an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head, and broke his skull.
54 Te dongah a hnopai aka phuei camoe te koea khue tih, “Na cunghang te bong lamtah kai he ng'ngawn to laeh, kai he, 'Huta loh a ngawn,’ ti uh ve,” a ti nah. Te dongah a camoe long te a thun tih duek.
Then he called hastily to the young man, his armour bearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, that men not say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’ His young man thrust him through, and he died.”
55 Israel hlang loh Abimeleka duek tea hmuh uh. Te phoeiah tah hlang loh amah hmuen la cet uh.
When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they each departed to his place.
56 Abimelek loh a napa taengah boethaea saii tih a manuca hlang sawmrhiha ngawn te Pathen loh a thuung pah.
Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did to his father in killing his seventy brothers;
57 Shekhem hlang kah boethae boeih te khaw amamih lu dongah Pathen loh a thuung pah tih Jerubbaal capa Jotham kah rhunkhuennah te khaw amih soah tla.
and God repaid all the wickedness of the men of Shechem on their heads; and the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal came on them.
