< 2 Samuel 20 >
1 Te vaengah hlang muen pakhat om, a ming tah Benjamin hlang, Bikhri capa Sheba ni. Tuki te a ueng tih, “Mamih kah hamsum he David ham moenih, mamih kah rho he Jesse capa taengah a om ham moenih. Israel rhoekTe amah kah dap la boeih cet saeh,” a ti.
And it happened that there was, in that place, a man of Belial, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a man of Benjamin. And he sounded the trumpet, and he said: “There is no portion for us in David, nor any inheritance in the son of Jesse. Return to your own tents, O Israel.”
2 Te dongah Israel hlang boeih tah David hnuk lamloh Bikhri capa Sheba hnuk la cet uh. Tedae Judah hlang tah Jordan lamloh Jerusalem duela a manghai nen ni a. kaibaeng uh.
And all of Israel separated from David, and they were following Sheba, the son of Bichri. But the men of Judah clung to their king, from the Jordan as far as Jerusalem.
3 David Te Jerusalem kah amah im la a pawk vaengah im tawt la a paih a yula huta parha te manghai loh a loh tih im hloeh ah a khueh. Amih te a cangbam van ngawn dae amih taengla moe pah voel pawh. Amih te a duek hnin duela a daengdaeh dongah a khosaknah he nuhmai la om uh.
And when the king had entered his house at Jerusalem, he took the ten women concubines, whom he had left behind to care for the house, and he put them into custody, allowing them provisions. But he did not enter to them. Instead, they were enclosed, even until the day of their deaths, living as widows.
4 Manghai loh Amasa taengah, “Hnin thum khuiah Judah hlang te kamah taengla hueh lamtah namah khaw pahoi om,” a ti nah.
Then the king said to Amasa, “Summon to me all the men of Judah on the third day, and you shall be present also.”
5 Amasa loh Judah rhoekTe hueh hamla cet ngawn dae uelh, uelh tih tingtunnah te a khueh.
Therefore, Amasa went away, so that he might summon Judah. But he delayed beyond the agreed time that the king had appointed to him.
6 Te dongah David loh Abishai taengah, “Absalom lakah Bikhri capa Sheba loh mamih taengah thae a huet pawn ni. Namah loh na boeipa kah sal rhoek ke khuen lamtah a hnukah hloem laeh. Khopuei vong cak Te anih loh hmuh vetih mamih mikhmuh ah huul uh ve,” a ti nah.
And David said to Abishai: “Now Sheba, the son of Bichri, will afflict us more so than Absalom did. Therefore, take the servants of your lord, and pursue him, otherwise he may find fortified cities, and escape from us.”
7 Te dongah Joab kah hlang rhoek, Kerethi, Phelethi neh hlangrhalh boeih tah anih hnukah cet uh tih, Bikhri capa Sheba hnuk hloem hamla Jerusalem lamloh khoong uh.
And so, the men of Joab departed with him, along with the Cherethites and the Pelethites. And all the able-bodied men went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba, the son of Bichri.
8 Amih Te Gibeon lungnu ah a om uh vaengah Amasa Te amih mikhmuh ah a pawk pah. Te dongah Joab loh a himbai neh a pueinak te a muk. Capang dongkah cunghang Te cihin neh a cinghen ah a sol dae a khuen vaengah vik a colh pah.
And when they were beside the great stone, which is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was wearing a close-fitting coat of equal length with his garment. And over these, he was girded with a sword hanging down to his thigh, in a scabbard which was made so that the sword could be removed with the least motion, and then strike.
9 Joab loh Amasa te, “Ka manuca na sading a? a ti nah. Te phoeiah anih te mok hamla Amasa hnapae te Joab kah bantang kut neh a tuuk.
Then Joab said to Amasa, “Be well, my brother.” And he held Amasa by the chin with his right hand, as if to kiss him.
10 Te vaengah Joab kut dongkah cunghang te Amasa loh hmuethmat pawh. Te dongah Amasa Te tumca neh a bung ah a laih tih a bung Te diklai la pawk a sop pah. Anih te a talh mueh la duek. Te phoeiah Joab neh a mana Abishai loh Bikhri capa Sheba te a hloem.
But Amasa did not notice the sword that Joab had. And he struck him in the side, and his intestines poured out to the ground. And he did not inflict a second wound, and he died. Then Joab and his brother Abishai pursued Sheba, the son of Bichri.
11 Te vaengah Joab kah tueihyoeih khui lamkah hlang pakhatTe a taengah pai tih, “U khaw Joab taengla aka naep tih u khaw David ham aka ti te tah Joab hnukah bat saeh,” a ti.
Meanwhile, certain men, from the company of Joab, when they had stopped beside the dead body of Amasa, said: “Behold, the one who wished to be in the place of Joab, the companion of David.”
12 Amasa tah long lung ah a thii neh a bol vaengah hlang pakhat loh a hmuh. Te dongah pilnam te boeih a hloh tih Amasa te longpuei lamloh lohma la a thoeih uh. Anih taengla aka thoeng boeih loh a hmuh vaengah a pai thil tih anih Te himbai a khuk thil.
Now Amasa was covered with blood, and was lying in the middle of the road. A certain man saw this, with all the people standing nearby to look at him, and he removed Amasa from the road into a field. And he covered him with a garment, so that those passing by would not stop because of him.
13 Long lamloh a khoe van nen tah hlang boeih loh Bikhri capa Sheba hnuk hloem hamla Joab te a paan.
Then, when he had been removed from the road, all the men continued on, following Joab in the pursuit of Sheba, the son of Bichri.
14 Te vaengah Israel koca boeih Te Abel lungnu neh Bethmaakha due, Beree boeih te khaw a hil. Te dongah coi tih, tingtun uh tih a hnukah bang uh.
Now he had passed through all the tribes of Israel into Abel and Bethmaacah. And all the elect men had gathered together to him.
15 Abelbethmaakah a pha uh vaengah anih te koep a dum uh. Khopuei te tanglung malh a lun thil uh tih rhalmahvong te a pai thil. Joab neh a pilnam pum loh vongtung te cungku sak ham a thuk.
And so, they went and besieged him at Abel and Bethmaacah. And they surrounded the city with siege works, and the city was blockaded. Then the entire crowd who were with Joab strove to destroy the walls.
16 Te vaengah khopuei lamkah huta aka cueih Te pang tih, “Hnatun, hnatun uh mai lah, Joab te, 'Hela ha mop lamtah namah taengah ka thui eh?,’ ti nah dae,” a ti.
And a wise woman exclaimed from the city: “Listen, listen, and say to Joab: Draw near, and I will speak with you.”
17 A taengla a thoeng pah vaengah huta loh, “Joab nang a,” a ti nah. Te dongah, “Kai ni ue,” a ti nah. Te phoeiah, 'Na salnu kah ol he hnatun lah,” a ti nah hatah, “Ka hnatun ngawn,” a ti nah.
And when he had drawn near to her, she said to him, “Are you Joab?” And he responded, “I am.” And she spoke in this way to him, “Listen to the words of your handmaid.” He responded, “I am listening.”
18 Te phoeiah a thui lam khaw thui pah. Hlamat ah a thui uh tih Abel ah toem la toem uh tih cing uh,’ a ti lah ko.
And again she spoke: “A word was said in the old proverb, ‘Those who would inquire, let them inquire in Abel.’ And so they would reach a conclusion.
19 Kai long tah Israel he oltak la ka thuung vaengah nang long tah khopuei neh Israel khuikah a manu Te ngawn ham na mae. Balae tih BOEIPA kah rho na yoop eh?,” a ti nah.
Am I not the one who responds with the truth in Israel? And yet you are seeking to overthrow the city, and to overturn a mother in Israel! Why would you cast down the inheritance of the Lord?”
20 Joab loh a doo tih, “Savisava la savisava, kai lamloh aka yoop mai tih aka phae mai te.
And responding, Joab said: “May this be far, may this be far from me! May I not cast down, and may I not demolish.
21 He tah ol voel moenih. Tedae Ephraim tlang kah hlang pakhat, Bikhri capa, a ming ah Sheba loh manghai David te a kut a luklek thil. Anih bueng mah han tloeng lamtah khopuei lamloh ka nong bitni,” a ti nah. Te vaengah huta loh Joab taengah, “A lu Te vongtung lamloh namah taengla ham voeih coeng te,” a ti nah.
The matter is not as you said. Rather, a man from mount Ephraim, Sheba, the son of Bichri, by name, has lifted up his hand against king David. Deliver him alone, and we will withdraw from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head will be thrown down to you from the wall.’
22 Huta loh pilnam boeih te a cueihnah neh a paan dongah Bikhri capa Sheba kah a lu te a rhaih pa uh tih Joab taengla a voeih uh. Te daengah tuki te a ueng tih, hlang khopuei lamloh amah kah dap duela taekyak uh. Te phoeiah Joab Te Jerusalem kah manghai taengla koep mael.
Therefore, she entered to all the people, and she spoke to them wisely. And they cut off the head of Sheba, the son of Bichri, and they threw it down to Joab. And he sounded the trumpet, and they withdrew from the city, each one to his own tent. But Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.
23 Te dongah Israel caempuei boeih te Joab loh, Kerethi neh Phelethi Te Jehoiada capa Benaiah loh,
Thus Joab was over the entire army of Israel. And Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was over the Cerethites and Phelethites.
24 Adoram loh saldong boei, Ahilud capa Jehoshaphat loh khokhuen cabu,
Yet truly, Adoram was over the tributes. And Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud, was the keeper of records.
25 Sheva Te cadaek, Zadok neh Abiathar loh khosoih te a ngol thil.
Now Sheva was the scribe. And truly Zadok and Abiathar were the priests.
26 Jairi Ira khaw David taengah khosoih la om van.
But Ira, the Jairite, was the priest of David.
