1 Samuel 21

1 David te hlah uh tiha caeh vanneh Jonathan khaw amah kho la bal. David tah Nob kah khosoih Ahimelek taengla pawk. Tedae David doe ham te Ahimelek te lakueng tih, “Nang he balae tih hlang neh na puei uh kolla namah bueng na pawk,” a ti nah.

Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was full of fear at meeting David, and said to him, Why are you by yourself, having no man with you?

2 David loh khosoih Ahimelek te, “Manghai loh ol ng'uen tih, 'Kai loh nang kan tueih te khaw, nang kang uen te khaw, olka he hlang pakhat long khaw ming boel saeh, tongmang hmuen pakhat kah camoe rhoek te ka ming sak coeng,’ a ti.

And David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king has given me orders and has said to me, Say nothing to anyone about the business on which I am sending you and the orders I have given you: and a certain place has been fixed to which the young men are to go.

3 Na kut dongah vaidam panga tah om aya Na hmuh duen khaw ka kut dongah m'pae laeh,” a ti nah.

So now, if you have here five cakes of bread, give them into my hand, or whatever you have.

4 Khosoih loh David tea doo tih, “Ka kut dongah rhaengpuei buh tah om pawt dae, camoe rhoek ni huta taeng lamloha cue uh atah buh cim om,” a ti nah.

And the priest, answering David, said, I have no common bread here but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women.

5 Te vaengah David loh khosoih tea doo tih amah taengah, “Huta khaw hlaem hlavai kah ka caeh bangla kaimih lamloh cue uh. Te dongah camoe rhoek kah hnopai tah cimcaihnah neh om. Amah te rhongingnah longpuei ah cet sitoe cakhaw hnopai dongah tahae khohnin duela cim uh ngai bal pueng,” a ti nah.

And David in answer said to the priest, Certainly women have been kept from us; and as has been done before when I have gone out the arms of the young men were made holy, even though it was a common journey; how much more today will their arms be made holy.

6 Te vaengah buha om pawt dongah BOEIPA mikhmuh lamkaha rhoea hmai buh cim te khosoih loh Davida paek. Te khohnin ah buh bae neh a tho ham koi te vik a loh coeng.

So the priest gave him the holy bread: there was no other, only the holy bread which had been taken from before the Lord, so that new bread might be put in its place on the day when it was taken away.

7 Tekah khohnin ah Saul sal rhoek khui lamkah hlang pakhat, Saul kah tudawn boei, a ming ah Edom hoelDoeg khaw BOEIPA mikhmuh ah cue uh.

Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, kept back before the Lord; his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the strongest of Saul's runners.

8 Te phoeiah Ahimelek te David loh, “Na kut ah caai neh cunghang mai khaw a om moeniha he, manghai ol he tokrhat la a om dongah ka kut dongah ka cunghang khaw, kamah kah hnopai khaw ka loh moenih,” a ti nah.

And David said to Ahimelech, Have you no sword or spear with you here? for I have come without my sword and other arms, because the king's business had to be done quickly.

9 Khosoih loh, “Elah ah na ngawn Philisti Goliath kah cunghang tah hnisui hlip ah himbai neh ka cun, te te na loh atah namah ham lo, he phoeiah tah he ah he a tloe om pawh,” a ti nah. Te dongah David loh, “Te bang te a om moenih, te te kamah taengla m'pae,” a ti nah.

And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you put to death in the valley of Elah, is here folded in a cloth at the back of the ephod: take that, if you will, for there is no other sword here. And David said, there is no other sword like that; give it to me.

10 Tekah khohnin ah David te hlah uh tih Saul mikhmuh lamloh aka yong te Gath manghai Akhish taengla pawk.

Then David got up and went in flight that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish, the king of Gath.

11 Tedae anih te Akhish kah sal rhoek loh, “Khohmuen manghai David pawt nim he? lamnah neha doo uh tih, 'Saul loh a thawng, a thawng hil, David loh a thawngrha, a thawngrha hila ngawn,’ a ti uh te anih ham pawt nim?,” a ti uh.

And the servants of Achish said to him, Is not this David, the king of the land? did they not make songs about him in their dances, saying, Saul has put to death thousands, and David tens of thousands?

12 Tekah olka te David loh a thinko aha khueh tih Gath manghai Akhish mikhmuh ah mata rhih.

And David took these words to heart, fearing Achish, the king of Gath.

13 Te dongah amih mikhmuh ah a om a ih tea thovael tih amih kut dongah yan uh. Vongka thohkhaih dongaha khoeiha khoeih tih a tamkai te a hmuimul donglaa tlak sak.

So changing his behaviour before them, he made it seem as if he was off his head, hammering on the doors of the town, and letting the water from his mouth go down his chin.

14 Te dongah Akhish loh a sal rhoek taengah, “So uh lah, kekah hlang ke pavai ni ke, ba ham nim anih te kai taengla nan khuen uh?

Then Achish said to his servants, Look! the man is clearly off his head; why have you let him come before me?

15 Pavai ka nai tih nim pavai he kai taengla nang khuen uh? Kai im khuila kun saeh a he?,” a ti nah.

Are there not enough unbalanced men about me, that you have let this person come and do such tricks before me? is such a man to come into my house?
