< 1 Samuel 16 >

1 BOEIPA loh Samuel te, “Saul ham te me hil nim na nguek na coi ve? Israel manghai lamloh anih te ka hnawt coeng. Na ki situi than lamtah cet laeh. A ca rhoek khui lamkah te kamah kah manghai la ka hmuh coeng dongah Bethlehem Jesse taengla nang kan tueih coeng,” a ti nah.
And Yahweh said unto Samuel—How long, art thou going to pine for Saul, seeing that, I, have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill thy horn with oil, and come! let me send thee unto Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided me, among his sons, a king.
2 Tedae Samuel loh, “Metlam ka caeh eh? Saul loh a yaak vetih kai n'ngawn ni ta,” a ti nah. BOEIPA loh, “Saelhung khuikah vaitola te na kut dongah khuen lamtah, 'BOEIPA taengah nawn hamla ka pawk coeng,” ti nah.
And Samuel said, How can I go? As soon as Saul heareth, he will slay me. Then said Yahweh, A heifer, take thou with thee, and say, To sacrifice unto Yahweh, am I come.
3 Tedae, “Hmueih vaengah Jesse te khue lamtah na saii ham te kai loh kan tueng vetih nang taengah, 'Anih ka ti,’ te kai ham hang koelh,” a ti nah.
Then shall thou bid Jesse to the sacrifice, —when, I, will let thee know what thou must do, so shalt thou anoint for me him whom I shall name unto thee.
4 BOEIPA loh a thui te Samuel loh a saii tih Bethlehema pha hatah anih doe ham te khopuei ka a hamca rhoek lakueng uh tih, “Sading la na pawk dae a?,” a ti na uh.
And Samuel did that which Yahweh had spoken, and went to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came trembling to meet him, and one said—Peaceably, comest thou?
5 Te dongah, “BOEIPA taengah nawn hamla sading la ka pawk coeng. Ciim uh lamtah hmueih ah kai taengla halo uh,” a ti nah. Te dongah Jesse neh a ca rhoek tea ciim tih amih te hmueih aha khue.
And he said—Peaceably: to sacrifice unto Yahweh, am I come. Hallow yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he hallowed Jesse and his sons, and bade them to the sacrifice.
6 A pha vaengah Eliab tea hmuh hatah, “BOEIPA hmaiah amah kah a koelh pawn maco he,” a ti.
And it came to pass, when they entered, that he looked upon Eliab, —and said to himself, Surely, before Yahweh, is his Anointed.
7 Tedae BOEIPA loh Samuel te, “A mueimae neh a song a sang te paelki boeh. Hlang kah a hmuh bangla a hmuh pawt dongah anih te a hnawt pah. Hlang loh a suisak tea hmuh dae BOEIPA loh a thinko ni a hmuh,” a ti nah.
But Yahweh said unto Samuel—Do not regard his countenance, or the height of his stature, for I have rejected him, —for it is not what man looketh to but what God looketh to. For, man, looketh to the outward appearance, but, Yahweh, looketh to the heart.
8 Te dongah Jesse loh Abinadab tea khue tih Samuel mikhmuh aha thak hatah, “Anih te khaw BOEIPA loh a tuek moenih,” a ti nah.
Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel, —and he said, Neither of this one, hath Yahweh made choice.
9 Te phoeiah Jesse loh Shammah te athawt hatah, “Anih te khaw BOEIPA loh a tuek moenih,” a ti nah.
Then Jesse made Shammah pass by, —and he said—Nor of this one, hath Yahweh made choice.
10 Jesse loh a parhih ca te Samuel hmai aha thawt coeng dae Jesse te Samuel loh, “Amih te BOEIPA loh a tuek moenih,” a ti nah.
So Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, —and Samuel said unto Jesse, Yahweh hath not made choice of these.
11 Te dongah Jesse te Samuel loh, “Camoe rhoek te boeih pawn a?” a ti nah. Tedae, “A noe om pueng dae boiva laa luem puei ke,” a ti nah. Te vaengah Samuel loh Jesse te, “Hlang tueih lamtah anih te loh sak, anih hela ha pawk duela mael uh boel dae sih,” a ti nah.
Then said Samuel unto Jesse—Are these all the young men? And he said—There yet remaineth, the youngest, but lo! he is tending the sheep. Then said Samuel unto Jesse—Do, send, and summon him, for we cannot sit round, until he cometh in hither.
12 A tah tih ha pawk vaengah aniha lingphung la sakthen mik neh mueihmuh khaw then. Te vaengah BOEIPA loh, “Thoo lamtah anih heBOEIPAamah ham koelh laeh,” a ti nah.
So he sent, and brought him in. Now, he, was ruddy, a stripling with handsome eyes, and noble mien. Then said Yahweh—Rise—anoint him, for, this, is, he.
And Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren. And the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily upon David, from that day forward. Then arose Samuel, and went his way unto Ramah.
14 Tahae ah BOEIPA kah Mueihla tah Saul taeng lamloh nong coeng tih BOEIPA lamkah mueihla thae loh anih te a let sak coeng.
But, the spirit of Yahweh, departed from Saul, —and there terrified him a sad spirit, from Yahweh.
15 Te dongah Saul te a sal rhoek loh, “Pathen kah mueihla thae loh nang n'let sak coeng he.
Then said the servants of Saul unto him, —Lo! we pray thee, a sad superhuman spirit, doth terrify thee:
16 Na mikhmuh kah na sal rhoek taengah ka boeipa loh thui lamtah rhotoeng tum aka ming hlang pakhat te tlam uh saeh. Te daengah ni Pathen kah mueihla thae te nang soaha oma om vaengah a kut neh rhotoeng te a tum vetih nang hama then eh?,” a ti na uh.
Pray let our lord bid thy servants before thee, seek out a man, skilled in playing on the lyre, —so shall it be, when a sad superhuman spirit cometh on thee, then shall he play with his hand, and thou shalt be joyful.
17 Te dongah Saul loh a sal rhoek te, “Kai hamlaa tum aka then hlang te so lamtah kai taengla hang khuen uh,” a ti nah.
And Saul said unto his servants, —I pray you, look out for me a man that excelleth in playing, and bring him in unto me.
18 Te vaengah camoe rhoek khuikah pakhat loh a doo tih, “Bethlehem Jesse capa te ka hmuh dae ta. Anih loh a tum thai tih tatthai hlangrhalh, caemtloek hlang, olka aka yakming, a suisak neh aka om hlang la om tih anih te BOEIPA loh a om puei bal,” a ti nah.
Then responded one of the young men and said—Lo! I have seen—a son of Jesse, the Bethlehemite, skilled in playing, and a mighty man of valour, and a man of war, and of intelligent speech, and a handsome man, and, Yahweh, is with him.
19 Saul loh Jesse taengla puencawn rhoek te a tueih tih, “Na capa David, boiva taengah aka om te kai taengla han tueih dae,” a ti nah.
So Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, —and said, Send, unto me—David thy son, who is with the sheep.
20 Te dongah Jesse loh laak, vaidam, misur tuitang, maae ca pakhat te a loh tih a capa David kut dongah Saul taenglaa pat.
Then took Jesse an ass laden with bread, and a skin of wine, and one kid, —and sent by the hand of David his son, unto Saul.
21 David te Saul taenglaa pawk vaengah a mikhmuh ah pai. Te vaengah anih te bahoenga lungnah dongah anih kah hnopai phuei la pahoi a om sak.
And David came in unto Saul, —and stood before him, —and he loved him greatly, and he became his armour-bearer.
22 Te phoeiah Saul loh Jesse taengla hlang a tueih tih, “David he ka mikhmuh ah mikdaithena dang coeng dongah ka mikhmuh ah om saeh,” a ti nah.
And Saul sent unto Jesse, saying, —I pray thee, let David stand before me, for he hath found favour in mine eyes.
23 Pathen kah mueihla loh Saul te a pha tih a om thil takuem vaengah, David loh rhotoenga loh tih a kut neha tum pah. Te vaengah Saul dongkah mueihla thaea nong dongah amah khaw hoengpoek tiha then pah.
And so it used to be, when a superhuman spirit came unto Saul, then would David take the lyre, and play with his hand, —and Saul would be refreshed, and be joyful, and, the sad spirit, would depart from him.
