< Saam 18 >
1 Katoeng kruek zaehoikung hanah, Angraeng ih tamna David ih saam laa. Angraeng mah David to a misanawk thung boih hoi Saul ih ban thung hoiah loisak naah, David mah Angraeng khaeah hae laa hae sak; anih mah hae tiah thuih: Ka thacakhaih, Aw Angraeng, nang kang palung han.
Yahweh, I love you, the one who enables me to be strong.
2 Angraeng loe ka lungsong, kacak kai ih sipae hoi kai pahlongkung ah oh: ka Sithaw, ka thacakhaih, ka buephaih, kang vaenghaih, ka loihhaih taki, kai ih imsang ah oh.
Yahweh is like an [overhanging] rock [DOU, MET] [under which I can hide from my enemies]; he is like a strong fortress, the one who protects me; he protects me like a shield [MET] [protects a soldier]; he is the one to whom I go (for refuge/to be protected/safe), and he defends me by his great power [IDM].
3 Pakoeh han krah Sithaw to ka kawk han, anih mah ka misanawk ban thung hoiah na pahlong tih.
I called out to Yahweh, who deserves to be praised, and he rescued me from my enemies.
4 Duekhaih quinawk mah ang zaeng moe, Sithaw panoek ai kaminawk ih tuiphu mah zithaih hoiah ang ohsak.
All around me were dangerous situations in which I might be killed [PRS]; it was as though there were huge waves [MET] that almost crashed on me and killed me.
5 Hell qui mah ang zaeng kang moe, duekhaih thaang mah ang maah khoep. (Sheol )
[It was as though] the place where dead people are had ropes that were wrapped around me, or [it was as though] there was a trap [MET] that would [seize and] kill me. (Sheol )
6 Dawnrai naah Angraeng to ka kawk, ka Sithaw to ka palawk: anih mah angmah ih tempul thung hoiah ka lok ang tahngaih pae; ka hanghaih lok loe anih hmaa ah phak moe, anih ih naa thungah akun.
But when I was very distressed, I called out to Yahweh, and from his temple he heard me. He listened to me when I cried out [for help].
7 Anih palungphui naah, long anghuen moe, tasoeh; maenawk ohhaih takung khoek to anghuen moe, angthuih.
Then the earth quaked/shook strongly [DOU]; the mountains shook very strongly from their centers [DOU] because Yahweh was angry.
8 Anih ih hnah thung hoiah hmaikhue tacawt moe, anih pakha thung ih hmai mah kangh pongah, to ih hmaipalai hoiah hmai to amngaeh.
[It was as though] smoke poured out from his nostrils, and [as though] burning coals came out of his mouth.
9 Anih mah van to takoih moe, pahnaem tathuk; kaving loe anih ih khok tlim ah oh.
He opened the sky and came down with a black cloud under his feet.
10 Anih loe Cherubim nuiah angthueng moe, azawk: ue, anih loe takhi ih pakhraehnawk nuiah azawk.
He flew, riding on the back of a creature that had wings, traveling [fast], blown along by the wind.
11 Anih loe angmah anghawk haih hanah vinghaih to sak moe, kaving khak tuinawk hoi kathah van ih tamainawk mah anih to takui o.
Darkness was all around him [like a blanket] [MET]; dark clouds, full of moisture, covered him [MET].
12 A hmaa ah aanghaih oh pongah, kathah tamainawk mah qaetui hoi hmai kamngaeh thlung to sin o moe, hmabang ah caeh o.
Hailstones and flashes of lightning were around him; hail and burning coals fell from the sky.
13 Angraeng loe van ah doeh khopazihsak moe, Sang koek mah qaetui hoi hmai kamngaeh thlungnawk hanah lok a paek.
Then Yahweh [spoke in a loud voice] from the sky, and [his enemies] heard his voice that sounded like thunder.
14 Ue, anih loe angmah ih palaanawk to kah; tangphra a pueksak pongah, misanawk anghaehsak phang moe, a sungsak.
He shot his arrows at them and caused them to scatter; His flashes of lightning caused them to become very confused (OR, to run away).
15 Aw Angraeng, na thuitaekhaih hoi na hnah thung ih takhi nang hahhaih hoiah, tui longhaih loklamnawk to amtueng moe, long angdoethaih doeh amtueng.
The bottom of the ocean became visible, and the foundations of the earth were uncovered, when Yahweh rebuked his enemies when he snorted.
16 Anih loe ranui bang hoiah ban to payangh, kai ang patawnh moe, pop parai tuinawk thung hoiah kai to azuh tahang.
[It was as though] he reached down from heaven and grabbed me and pulled me up out of the deep ocean.
17 Anih mah kai hnuma kaminawk, kai han paroeai thacak, ka misanawk ban thung hoiah ang pahlong.
He rescued me from my strong enemies who hated me; they were very strong, with the result that I [could not defeat them].
18 Kam rohaih niah nihcae mah ang maah o khoep; toe Angraeng loe ka buephaih ah oh.
When I (was distressed/had troubles), they attacked me, but Yahweh defended/protected me.
19 Anih mah kalen parai imthung ah ang caeh haih; ka nuiah palung a tongh pongah, anih mah ang pahlong.
He led me to a place where I was safe; he rescued me because he was pleased with me.
20 Angraeng mah ka toenghaih baktih toengah, tangqum to ang paek, ka ban ciimhaih baktih toengah atho ang paek let.
Yahweh has rewarded me because I do what is right; he has blessed me because I (am innocent/have not done things that are wrong).
21 Angraeng ih loklamnawk to ka pazui pongah, zaehaih sak hanah Sithaw to ka caeh taak ai.
I have obeyed Yahweh’s laws; I have not abandoned him.
22 A lok takroekhaihnawk boih loe ka hmaa ah oh, anih mah sak ih daannawk ka pahnawt vai ai.
My behavior was directed by his rules; I have not stopped obeying them.
23 A hmaa ah toenghaih hoiah kho ka sak moe, zaehaih to ka caeh taak.
He knows that I have not done what is wrong; I have kept myself from sinning.
24 To pongah ka toenghaih baktih, a mikhnuk ah ka ban ciimhaih baktih toengah, Angraeng mah tangqum to ang paek.
So he rewards me because I do what is right; he knows that I [SYN] have not committed sins.
25 Nang loe tahmen thaih kami khaeah tahmenhaih nam tuengsak moe, katoeng kami khaeah toenghaih to nam tuengsak;
Yahweh, you are faithful to those who faithfully [do what you tell them to do]; you always do what is good/right to those who do what you want them to do.
26 Kaciim kami khaeah ciimhaih nam tuengsak moe, poek angkoih kami khaeah poek angkoihaih to nam tuegsak.
You are kind to those who are kind to others, but you act wisely toward those who (act perversely/do bad things).
27 Mi tlim ah khosah kaminawk to na pahlong; toe kasang ah mikpadai kaminawk loe na pakhrak tathuk.
You save those who are humble, but you cause those who are proud to be humiliated/ashamed.
28 Aw Angraeng, kai ih hmaithawk nang paaang pae, ka Angraeng Sithaw mah ka vinghaih hae na aangsak tih.
You give light to my [soul/spirit]; you take away the darkness of my soul.
29 Nang oephaih rang hoiah misa to ka patom moe, ka Sithaw oephaih rang hoiah ni sipae to ka poeng thaih.
You enable me to be strong, with the result that I can run and attack a line of enemy soldiers; with your help I can (scale/climb up) the walls [that surround my enemies’ cities].
30 Sithaw ih loklam loe acung: Angraeng ih lok loe coek han koi om ai. Anih loe angmah khaeah abuep kaminawk boih hanah angvaenghaih ah oh.
Everything that Yahweh my God does is perfect. We can depend on him to do what he promises. He is like a shield [MET] to protect all those who go to him for refuge.

God is the one who enables me to be strong and who keeps me safe on the roads that I walk on.

He enables me to [walk swiftly without stumbling], like a deer walks/runs in the mountains.
34 Misatuk kop hanah ka ban ang patoh pae, to naah ni ka ban mah sum kalii to takoih thai vop.
He teaches me how to use a strong/metal bow in order that I can use it to fight in battles.

Yahweh, you protect and save me with your shield; you have made me safe by your power [MTY]. I have become (strong/a great [king]) because you have helped me.
36 Ka caehhaih loklam to na kawksak pongah, ka khok hae amkhraeng thai ai.
You have cleared the road for me, with the result that now I do not slip/stumble.
37 Ka misanawk ka patom moe, ka kae: nihcae amro ai karoek to kam laem let ai.
I have pursued my enemies and caught them; I did not stop until I had defeated/killed them all.
38 Nihcae loe ka khok tlim ah amtimh o: angthawk thai ai khoek to nihcae to ka tit.
When I strike them, they are not able to get up again; they lie on the ground, defeated.
39 Misatuk hanah thacakhaih kazii hoiah nang zaeng; ka misanawk ka khok tlim ah na kuepsak.
You have enabled me to be strong in order that I can fight battles and defeat my enemies.
40 Kai hnuma kaminawk ka hum thai hanah, ka misanawk ih tahnongnawk doeh nang paek.
You caused my enemies to run away (OR, you enabled me to put my foot on my enemies’ necks [after I captured them and forced them to lie on the ground]); I have gotten rid of all those who hated me.
41 Nihcae loe hang o, toe pahlongkung tawn o ai; Angraeng khaeah a hang o, toe anih mah pathim pae ai.
They called out for someone to help them, but no one saved them.
42 To naah nihcae to adip pueng ah ka hnoih moe, takhi nuiah maiphu takhoek ih baktih toengah ka takhoek: nihcae to loklam ih maiphu baktiah ka haeh.
I pulverize them, with the result that they become like [MET] the dust that the wind [blows away]; I throw them out like [SIM] [people throw] dirt out into the streets.
43 Kai naeh kaminawk ih ban thung hoiah nang loisak moe, sithaw panoek ai kaminawk ih lu ah nang suek; panoek ai ih kaminawk doeh kai ih tok to a sak o.
You enabled me to defeat those who fought against me, and appointed me to be the ruler of [many]; people whom I did not know about previously are now slaves [in my kingdom].
44 Kai ih tamthang a thaih o naah, ka lok to tahngaih o; panoek ai ih kaminawk loe angmacae koeh ah ka hmaa ah ang paek o.
When foreigners hear about me, they (cringe/bow low before me) and they obey me.
45 Panoek ai ih kaminawk loe palung boeng o moe, angmacae ohhaih ahmuen hoi tasoehhaih hoiah angzoh o.
They are no longer courageous, and from their forts [where they were hiding] they come [to me] trembling.
46 Angraeng loe hing! Ka lungsong loe tahamhoihaih om nasoe! Kai pahlongkung Sithaw loe, pakoehhaih om nasoe.
Yahweh is alive! Praise the one who is like an [overhanging] rock [MET] [under which I am safe] Exalt the God who saves me!
47 Kai hanah lulak moe, kaminawk kai tlim ah kuepsakkung loe, Sithaw ni.
