1 Hae hmuennawk loe Judah siangpahrang Hezekiah ih kaminawk mah tarik pakong patoeng ih, Solomon palunghahaih loknawk ah oh.
These are the miscellaneous instructions of Solomon, which the friends of Ezekias king of Judea copied out.
2 Sithaw lensawkhaih loe amtueng ai ah kaom hmuen maeto ah oh; toe hmuen maeto kawng pakronghaih loe siangpahrangnawk lensawkhaih ah oh.
The glory of God conceals a matter: but the glory of a king honours business.
3 Van loe sang moe, long loe thuk baktih toengah, siangpahrangnawk ih palung loe hnu thai mak ai.
Heaven is high, and earth is deep, and a king's heart is unsearchable.
4 Sumkanglung thung ih sum aek to va ah, to naah ni sum sahkung mah boengloeng kahoih to sah thai tih.
Beat the drossy silver, and it shall be made entirely pure.
5 Kasae kaminawk to siangpahrang hmaa hoiah takhoe oh; to tiah ni anih ih angraeng tangkhang to toenghaih hoiah cak poe tih.
Slay the ungodly from before the king, and his throne shall prosper in righteousness.
6 Siangpahrang hmaa ah nangmah hoi nangmah to amkoeh hmah; kalen kaminawk ih ahmuen ah angdoe hmah;
Be not boastful in the presence of the king, and remain not in the places of princes;
7 mik hoiah na hnuk ih angraeng hmaa ah azathaih hoiah oh pongah loe, Hae ah angzo tahang ah, tiah thui kami ih lok to tahngaih han hoih kue.
for [it is] better for thee that it should be said, Come up to me, than that [one] should humble thee in the presence of the prince; speak of that which thine eyes have seen.
8 Lokcaekhaih im ah kami to karangah khing hmah; hnukkhuem ah na imtaeng kami mah azathaih na tongsak nahaeloe kawbangah maw na om tih?
Get not suddenly into a quarrel, lest thou repent at last.
9 Na imtaeng kami hoi poek anghmong ai pongah lok angaek cadoeh, tamqu hmuen to minawk khaeah taphong hmah;
Whenever thy friend shall reproach thee, retreat backward, despise [him] not;
10 to tih ai nahaeloe lok thaih kami mah nang azathaih tongsak hanah taphong ueloe, na hmin hoihaih to amro moeng tih.
lest thy friend continue to reproach thee, so thy quarrel and enmity shall not depart, but shall be to thee like death. Favour and friendship set [a man] free, which do thou keep for thyself, lest thou be made liable to reproach; but take heed to thy ways peaceably.
11 Kahoih lok apaehhaih loe sumkanglung pazut het ih sui bungmu hoiah anghmong.
[As] a golden apple in a necklace of sardius, so [is it] to speak a [wise] word.
12 Palunghahaih lok hoi thuitaek kami loe, lok tahngai kami hanah, sui naa tangkraeng baktih, suitui kaciim hoiah sak ih bungmu baktiah oh.
In an ear-ring of gold a precious sardius is also set; [so is] a wise word to an obedient ear.
13 Oep kaom laicaeh loe anih patoehkung hanah, cang aah nathuem ih dantui kamding baktiah oh, patoehkung Angraeng ih palungthin to angthasak.
As a fall of snow in the time of harvest is good against heat, so a faithful messenger [refreshes] those that send him; for he helps the souls of his employers.
14 Tangqum paek han, tiah amoek moe, paek ai kami loe khotui om ai tamai hoiah anghmong.
As winds and clouds and rains are most evident [objects], so is he that boasts of a false gift.
15 Pauephaih rang hoiah ukkung to pazawk thaih moe, loknaem mah ahuh to angkhaehsak thaih.
In long-suffering is prosperity to kings, and a soft tongue breaks the bones.
16 Khoitui to na hnuk maw? Kahoih boekah caa ah, amhah aak ah na caak nahaeloe na palok tih.
Having found honey, eat [only] what is enough, lest haply thou be filled, and vomit it up.
17 Na imtaeng khaeah kahoih boekah caeh ah, na caeh tuektuek nahaeloe, na hmawt ueloe, na hnuma moeng tih.
Enter sparingly into thy friend's house, lest he be satiated with thy company, and hate thee.
18 A imtaeng kami nuiah amsawn hnukung ah angdoe kami loe thingboeng, haita, palaa hoiah anghmong.
[As] a club, and a dagger, and a pointed arrow, so also is a man who bears false witness against his friend.
19 Raihaih tong naah oep kaom ai kami khaeah amhahaih loe, haa kangkhaek, khokkhaem kami hoiah anghmong.
The way of the wicked and the foot of the transgressor shall perish in an evil day.
20 Poek angpho kami khaeah laasah kami loe siktue ah laihaw angkhring kami, zencing nuiah kathaw tui bawh baktiah ni oh.
As vinegar is bad for a sore, so trouble befalling the body afflicts the heart. As a moth in a garment, and a worm in wood, so the grief of a man hurts the heart.
21 Na misa to zok amthlam nahaeloe buh paek ah; tui anghae nahaeloe naek hanah tui to paek ah;
If thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink;
22 hae loe anih lu nuiah hmaisaae koeng pae baktiah om ueloe, Angraeng mah tahamhoihaih na paek tih.
for so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee [with] good.
23 Aluek bang ih takhi mah kho angzohsak baktih toengah, minawk kasae thui kami ih palai mah palungphuihaih to tacawtsak.
The north wind raises clouds; so an impudent face provokes the tongue.
24 Angzoeh koeh zu hoiah kakawk parai im thungah nawnto oh pongah loe imphu ranui ih im takii ah oh to hoih kue.
[It is] better to dwell on a corner of the roof, than with a railing woman in an open house.
25 Angthla parai ahmuen hoiah angzo kahoih tamthanglok loe pakhra tui anghae kami hanah tui kamding ah oh.
As cold water is agreeable to a thirsting soul, so is a good message from a land far off.
26 Kahoih ai kami hmaa ah kamtimh katoeng kami loe tui kamnu hoi kaqong tui baktiah ni oh.
As if one should stop a well, and corrupt a spring of water, so [is it] unseemly for a righteous man to fall before an ungodly man.
27 Khoitui pop hmoek ah caak han hoih ai baktih toengah, angmah lensawkhaih pakrong kami loe lensawkhaih to hnu mak ai.
[It is] not good to eat much honey; but it is right to honour venerable sayings.
28 A poekhaih angsum ai kami loe sipae om ai, kamtimh vangpui hoiah anghmong.
As a city whose walls are broken down, and which is unfortified, so is a man who does anything without counsel.
