< Palungha Lok 23 >
1 Ukkung hoi buh nawnto caak han nang hnut naah, na tuinuen to kahoihah angsum ah;
When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Thou considerest diligently that which [is] before thee,
2 buhcaak nam oeh hmoek nahaeloe, na qawnh to haita hoi aah baktiah ni oh.
And thou hast put a knife to thy throat, If thou [art] a man of appetite.
3 Kakhraem anih ih buh to khit hmah; to buh loe alinghaih buh ah ni oh.
Have no desire to his dainties, seeing it [is] lying food.
4 Angraeng thai hanah toksah hmah; na palunghahaih to oep hmah.
Labour not to make wealth, From thine own understanding cease, Dost thou cause thine eyes to fly upon it? Then it is not.
5 Nawnetta ah anghma thaih hmuen to na khet maw? Tangtang ni van bangah kazawk tahmu baktih toengah, angraenghaih doeh pakhraeh tawnh moe, azawk ving.
For wealth maketh to itself wings, As an eagle it flieth to the heavens.
6 Uthaih tawn kami ih buh to caa pae hmah; anih ih kahoih caaknaek doeh khit pae hmah;
Eat not the bread of an evil eye, And have no desire to his dainties,
7 anih loe a palung thung hoi poek ih baktih toengah oh; caa ah loe nae ah, tiah ang naa, toe palung tang hoiah thui ai.
For as he hath thought in his soul, so [is] he, 'Eat and drink,' saith he to thee, And his heart [is] not with thee.
8 Zetta na caak ih buh to palok roep ueloe, kahoih loknawk to na sung moeng tih.
Thy morsel thou hast eaten thou dost vomit up, And hast marred thy words that [are] sweet.
9 Kamthu khaeah lokthui hmah; anih loe na thuih ih palunghahaih lok to patoek tih.
In the ears of a fool speak not, For he treadeth on the wisdom of thy words.
10 Canghnii ih prae angzithaih ramri to pathui hmah; naqah ih lawk to lomh pae hmah;
Remove not a border of olden times, And into fields of the fatherless enter not,
11 anih krangkung loe thacak; Angraeng mah nihcae kawng pongah na thuitaek tih.
For their Redeemer [is] strong, He doth plead their cause with thee.
12 Thuitaekhaih bangah palung paek ah loe, palunghahaih lok bangah na naa to patueng ah.
Bring in to instruction thy heart, And thine ear to sayings of knowledge.
13 Nawkta to thuitaek hanah paquem hmah; anih to cung hoiah na boh cadoeh dueh mak ai.
Withhold not from a youth chastisement, When thou smitest him with a rod he dieth not.
14 Hell thung hoiah anih to pahlong hanah, cung hoiah bop ah. (Sheol )
Thou with a rod smitest him, And his soul from Sheol thou deliverest. (Sheol )
15 Ka capa, palunghahaih na tawnh nahaeloe, ka palung hae anghoe tih.
My son, if thy heart hath been wise, My heart rejoiceth, even mine,
16 Ue, na pahni mah katoeng hmuen to thuih naah, ka palung hae anghoe tih.
And my reins exult when thy lips speak uprightly.
17 Kazae kaminawk to awt hmah; Angraeng zithaih khue to palung thung hoi poek ah.
Let not thy heart be envious at sinners, But — in the fear of Jehovah all the day.
18 Na oephaih loe hmabang ah oh, na oephaih loe boeng mak ai.
For, is there a posterity? Then thy hope is not cut off.
19 Ka capa, tahngai ah loe palungha ah; katoeng loklam ah na poekhaih palung to suem ah.
Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And make happy in the way thy heart,
20 Mu coih kami, moi caak koeh hmoek kami hoi angkom hmah.
Be not thou among quaffers of wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,
21 Mu coih kami hoi caaknaek amoeh kaminawk loe amtang tih; iih koeh hmoek kami loe amtanghaih mah khuk hmoek tih.
For the quaffer and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clotheth with rags.
22 Na tapenkung nam pa ih lok to tahngai ah, nam no mitong naah hnap hmah.
Hearken to thy father, who begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she hath become old.
23 Loktang to qan ah, zaw let hmah; palunghahaih, thuitaekhaih hoi panoekhaih to talawk ah.
Truth buy, and sell not, Wisdom, and instruction, and understanding,
24 Katoeng kami ih ampa loe paroeai anghoe tih; palungha caa tapen ampa loe a caa nuiah anghoe tih.
The father of the righteous rejoiceth greatly, The begetter of the wise rejoiceth in him.
25 Nam no hoi nam pa to anghoe tih, nang tapenkung loe anghoehaih tawn tih.
Rejoice doth thy father and thy mother, Yea, she that bare thee is joyful.
26 Ka capa, palung to na paek ah loe, ka loklamnawk hae na mik hoiah khen ah.
Give, my son, thy heart to me, And let thine eyes watch my ways.
27 Tangzat zaw nongpata loe kathuk tangqom baktih, minawk zoek thaih nongpata loe tamcaek tuikhaw baktiah oh.
For a harlot [is] a deep ditch, And a strange woman [is] a strait pit.
28 Mingcah baktiah kami to angang moe, nongpanawk zaehaih to pungsak.
She also, as catching prey, lieth in wait, And the treacherous among men she increaseth.
29 Khosak bing kami loe mi maw? Mi maw palungsae? Mi maw patangh? Mi maw amoek? Tidoeh na ai ah mi maw nganbawh kana hak? Mi maw mik kamlingh?
Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? who hath plaint? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?
30 To baktih kaminawk loe mu naek angsum thai ai kami, tasi hoi atok ih mu naek hanah pakrong kaminawk ni.
Those tarrying by the wine, Those going in to search out mixed wine.
31 Mu kathim maw, boengloeng pong lawn naah rong kampha mu maw, naek naah akun kahoih mu kathim maw to khen hmah.
See not wine when it showeth itself red, When it giveth in the cup its colour, It goeth up and down through the upright.
32 Boenghaih ah loe pahui baktiah kami to patuk moe, pahui sae ih kasoetui baktiah oh.
Its latter end — as a serpent it biteth, And as a basilisk it stingeth.
33 Na mik mah kahoih ai nongpata to khen ueloe, na poekhaih palungthin to amkhraengsak ving tih.
Thine eyes see strange women, And thy heart speaketh perverse things.
34 Ue, nang loe tuipui um ah iip kami baktih, palong paehhaih qui nuiah iip kami baktiah na om tih.
And thou hast been as one lying down in the heart of the sea, And as one lying down on the top of a mast.
35 Nihcae mah ang boh o, toe kana panoek ai; ang caep o, toe tidoeh ka panoek ai! Kang thawk naah, naek hanah mu to pakrong let han vop, tiah ni na thui tih.
'They smote me, I have not been sick, They beat me, I have not known. When I awake — I seek it yet again!'
