< Nambar 16 >

1 Levi acaeng Kohath capa Izhar, Izhar capa Korah loe, Reuben acaeng Paleth capa On, On capa Eliab, Eliab capa hnik Dathan hoi Abiram cae to kawk moe,
One day Korah, who was the son of Izhar and a descendant of Levi’s son Kohath, conspired with Dathan and Abiram, who were the sons of Eliab, and On, who was the son of Peleth. Those three men were from the tribe of Reuben.
2 amkhueng kaminawk thungah minawk mah panoek ih kami, ahmin kamthang kami, amkhuenghaih ukkung Israel kami cumvai hnet, qui pangato hoi nawnto Mosi to hmang o;
Korah and those other three men incited 250 other people who were leaders among the Israeli people to join them in rebelling against Moses/me.
3 nihcae loe nawnto amkhueng o moe, Mosi hoi Aaron ih lok to aek o, nihnik khaeah, Kamtlai hmoek ah tok na sak hoi; amkhueng kaminawk loe ciimcai o; Angraeng loe, kami boih nuiah oh bae, tiah a naa o.
They came together to criticize Aaron and Moses/me. They said to them/us, “You two are using more [authority] than you should! Yahweh has set apart all of us Israeli people, and he is with/helping all of us. So why do you act as though you are more important than the rest of us people who belong to Yahweh [RHQ]?”
4 Nihcae ih lok Mosi mah thaih naah a mikhmai long ah akuep;
When Moses/I heard what they were saying, he/I prostrated himself/myself on the ground.
5 to pacoengah Mosi mah, Korah hoi a hnukbang kaminawk khaeah, Angraeng ih kami loe mi maw, mi maw ciimcai, angmah khaeah angzohsak han ih kami loe mi maw, tito khawnbang ah amtuengsak tih; a qoih ih kami doeh angmah taengah amtuengsak tih.
Then he/I said to Korah and those [Israeli leaders] who were with Korah, “Tomorrow morning Yahweh will show us whom he has chosen to be his [priest], and who is holy and allowed to come near to him. Yahweh will permit [only] those whom he chooses to come into his presence.
6 Nang, Korah hoi na hnukbang kaminawk boih hae hae sah oh; sabae to la o ah loe,
So Korah, tomorrow you and those who are with you must prepare your pans to burn incense.
7 khawnbang ah Angraeng hmaa ah, sabae thungah hmuihoih hmai thlaekhaih to sah oh; to naah Angraeng mah qoih ih kami loe ciimcai kami ah om tih; nangcae Levi kaminawk loe kamtlai hmoek ah na sak o boeh, tiah a naa.
Then you must light a fire in them and burn the incense in the presence of Yahweh. Then we will see which one of us Yahweh has chosen to be his holy servant. It is you men who are descendants of Levi who are trying to use more [authority] than you should!”
8 Mosi mah Korah khaeah, Nangcae Levi kaminawk, tahngai oh;
Then Moses/I spoke again to Korah. He/I said, “You men who are descendants of Levi, listen to me!
9 nangcae loe Angraeng ih kahni imthung ah toksak moe, kaminawk hma ah angdoet pacoengah, nihcae ih tok to sak hanah, nangcae to Israel Sithaw mah a taengah kawk boeh, Israel kaminawk thung hoi pahoe ih hmuen loe, nangcae han tetta hmuen ah maw oh?
The God of us Israelis has chosen all of you to be close to him in order that you can work for him at his Sacred Tent and serve the people. (Is that unimportant/Does that mean nothing) to you [RHQ]?
10 Nangmah hoi nam nawkamya Levi ih caanawk boih, angmah hoi kanghnai ah suek boeh to mah, nangcae mah qaima ah oh han ih na pakrong o vop maw?
Yahweh has brought you, [Korah], and your fellow descendants of Levi, near to himself. Now are you demanding to become priests also?
11 To pongah nangmah hoi na hnukbang kaminawk boih nawnto nam khueng o moe, Angraeng ih lok to na aek o; Aaron loe kawbaktih kami ah maw oh moe, na laisaep o thuih? tiah a naa.
It is really Yahweh against whom you and your fellow descendants of Levi are rebelling. Aaron is not the one about whom you are really complaining [RHQ].”
12 To pacoengah Mosi mah Eliab capa hnik Dathan hoi Abiram to kawk; toe nihnik mah, Kang zo hoi mak ai,
Then Moses/I summoned Dathan and Abiram, but [they refused to come]. They [sent a message] saying, “We will not come to you!
13 nang mah ni praezaek ah kaicae dueksak hanah, tahnutui hoi khoitui longhaih prae thung hoiah nang tacawt haih, to hmuen loe tetta ah maw oh moe, vaihi kaicae nuiah angraeng ah oh han na koeh vop?
You brought us out of Egypt, which was a very fertile [IDM] land, in order to cause us to die here in this desert. That was bad. But now you are also trying to boss us [RHQ], and that is worse.
14 Toe tahnutui hoi khoitui longhaih prae ah kaicae nang caeh haih ai, lawk hoi misur takhanawk doeh qawk ah nang paek ai; hae kaminawk ih mik to na taprok pae han maw? Kaihnik loe nang khaeah kang zo hoi mak ai, tiah a naa hoi.
You have not given us a new land to live in, a land that has good fields and vineyards. You are only trying to [RHQ] trick these people. So we will not come to you.”
15 To naah Mosi loe paroeai palungphui moe, Angraeng khaeah, nihnik mah paek ih hmuen to talawk pae hmah; nihnik khae ih laa hrang maeto doeh ka la pae ai, nihcae han nganbawh kana doeh ka paek vai ai, tiah a naa.
Then Moses/I became very angry. He/I said to Yahweh, “Do not accept the grain offerings that they have brought. I have not taken anything from them, not even one donkey, and I have never done anything wrong to them, [so they have no reason to complain about me].”
16 Mosi mah Korah khaeah, Aaron, nangmah hoi na hnukbang kaminawk boih, khawnbang ah Angraeng hmaa ah angphong oh;
Then Moses/I said to Korah, “You and all those who are with you must come here tomorrow and stand in front of Yahweh. Aaron will also be here.
17 kami boih mah hmuihoih thlaekhaih sabae to sin oh, a thungah hmuihoih to suem oh; nangcae boih mah hmuihoih thlaekhaih sabae cumvai hnet, qui pangato Angraeng hmaa ah sin oh; nang hoi Aaron mah doeh hmuihoih sabae to sin hoi toeng ah, tiah a naa.
You and all the 250 men who are with you must each take a pan in which to burn incense, and put incense in it, to [burn it to be] an offering to Yahweh. Aaron will do the same thing.”
18 To pongah kami boih mah angmah ih hmuihoih sabae to sin o moe, hmuihoih to hmai hoiah thlaek o pacoengah, Mosi, Aaron hoi nawnto kaminawk amkhuenghaih kahni im thok taengah angdoet o boih.
So [the next day] each of those men got a pan to burn incense. They put in it incense and hot coals to light it, and then they all stood at the entrance of the Sacred Tent with Aaron and Moses/me.
19 Korah mah doeh Mosi hoi Aaron ohhaih ahmuen maeto bang ih kaminawk amkhuenghaih thok taengah, angmah hnukbang kaminawk to amkhuengsak toeng; to naah Angraeng lensawkhaih kaminawk boih khaeah amtueng.
Then Korah summoned all the people who supported him and who were against Moses/me, and they also gathered at the entrance of the tent. Then the glory of Yahweh appeared to all of them/us,
20 Angraeng mah Mosi hoi Aaron khaeah,
and Yahweh said to Aaron and Moses/me,
21 Atue setta thungah hae kaminawk hae ka hum boih han boeh pongah, hae kaminawk salak hoiah amhoe hoi ah, tiah a naa.
“Get away from all these people, in order that I can get rid of them immediately!”
22 Toe Mosi hoi Aaron loe long ah akuep hoi moe, Aw Sithaw, kaminawk boih ih pakhra ukkung Sithaw, kami maeto zaehaih pongah, acaeng kaminawk boih nuiah palung na phui han maw? tiah a naa hoi.
But Aaron and Moses/I prostrated themselves/ourselves on the ground. We pleaded with Yahweh, saying, “God, you are the one who caused all these people to live [MTY]. Only one of these men has sinned; so, (is it right for you to be angry with all the people?/it is not right for you to be angry with all the people!) [RHQ]”
23 To naah Angraeng mah Mosi khaeah,
Yahweh said to Moses/me,
24 Korah, Dathan hoi Abiram ih kahni im hoi kamhoe ah oh hanah kaminawk to lokthui paeh, tiah a naa.
“[Okay], but tell all the people to get away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.”
25 Mosi loe angthawk moe, Israel kami kacoehtanawk hoi nawnto Dathan hoi Abiram khaeah caeh.
So Moses/I stood up and went to the tents of Dathan and Abiram. The Israeli leaders followed him/me.
26 Kaminawk khaeah, Hae ah kaom kasae kaminawk ih kahni im hoi kamhoe ah om oh; nihcae ih hmuen tita doeh sui o hmah; to tih ai nahaeloe nangcae doeh nihcae zaehaih pongah nam ro o moeng tih, tiah a thuih pae.
He/I told the people, “Get away from the tents of these wicked men, and do not touch anything that belongs to them! If you touch anything, you will die because of their sins!”
27 Kaminawk loe Korah, Dathan hoi Abiram cae ih kahni imthung hoiah tacawt o boih boeh pongah, Korah, Dathan hoi Abiram loe a zunawk, a capanawk, a caa nawktanawk hoi nawnto angmacae ohhaih im thok taengah angdoet o.
So all the people moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram came out of their tents with their wives and children and babies, and stood at the entrances of their tents.
28 To naah Mosi mah, Hae ah kaom hmuennawk loe kaimah koeh ah sak ih na ai ni; Angraeng mah sak han ang patoeh pongah ni ka sak.
Then Moses/I said, “I was not the one who decided to do all these things that I have done. It was Yahweh who [chose me and] sent me to do them. And now he will prove that to you.
29 Kaminawk boih mah tong ih duekhaih hoi thuitaekhaih to hae kaminawk mah tong o nahaeloe, Angraeng mah kai hae patoeh ai, tito panoek oh.
If these men die in a normal way, then it will be clear that Yahweh did not choose me.
30 Toe Angraeng mah hmuen kangtha to sah moe, long to akah rak pacoengah, hae kaminawk hoi nihcae ih ampuinawk to paaeh moe, kahing ah tangqom thungah caeh o nahaeloe, hae kaminawk mah Angraeng to khet patoek o, tito na panoek o tih, tiah a naa. (Sheol h7585)
But if Yahweh does something that has never happened before, if he causes the ground [that is under their feet] to open up and swallow these men [and their families] and all their possessions, and they fall into the opening and are buried while they are still alive, then you will know that these men have insulted Yahweh.” (Sheol h7585)
31 To loknawk a thuih boih pacoengah, Nihcae ohhaih im tlim ih long to akah rak,
As soon as Moses/I said this, the ground split open beneath those men.
32 long loe pakha aangh moe, to kaminawk hoi nihcae ih imnawk, Korah ih imthung takoh boih, a tawnh ih hmuenmaenawk boih to paaeh.
It swallowed them and their families and all those who were standing there with Korah and all of their possessions.
33 To kaminawk, nihcae hoi angkom kaminawk loe, kahing ah long thungah caeh o tathuk; long mah nihcae to pakuep hmoek; to tiah nihcae loe acaeng kaminawk thung hoiah anghmat angtaa o. (Sheol h7585)
They fell into the opening in the ground while they were still alive, and all their possessions fell into the opening also. They disappeared, and the ground closed back up again. (Sheol h7585)
34 Nihcae hanghaih lok to thaih o naah, aicae doeh long mah paaeh toeng tih boeh, tiah a poek o pongah, a taengah kaom Israel kaminawk loe cawnh o boih.
They screamed as they fell, and all the people who were standing nearby heard them scream. The people [were terrified and] cried out as they ran away, saying, “[We do not want] the ground to swallow us also!”
35 To naah Angraeng khae hoi hmai to angzoh moe, hmuihoih thlaek kami cumvai hnet, qui pangatonawk to hmai mah kangh boih.
And then a fire from Yahweh came down [from the sky] and burned up the 250 men who were burning the incense!
36 Angraeng mah Mosi hoi Aaron khaeah,
Then Yahweh said to Moses/me,
37 Aaron capa qaima Eleazar khaeah hmai kangqong hmuihoih thlaekhaih sabae to la ah loe, kangqong hmai to ataek ah; to hmuihoihnawk loe kaciim hmuen ah oh.
“Tell Aaron’s son Eleazar to take the pans that had incense in them away from the fire and to scatter the burning coals. The pans that those men [were carrying] are (holy/dedicated to me) [because they burned incense to me in them].
38 Angmacae hinghaih paduek hanah zaehaih sah kaminawk ih hmuihoih thlaekhaih sabae hoiah hmaicam to khuk hanah sum kangphaek daek to sah ah; to sabaenawk loe Angraeng khaeah paek ih hmuen ah oh pongah ciim; to hmuen loe Israel kaminawk tanoekhaih ah om tih, tiah thui paeh, tiah a naa.
Those men have now died because of their sin; so [Eleazar must] take their pans and hammer the metal to make it become very thin. He must make a covering for the altar with that metal. Those pans were used to offer incense to me, so they are (holy/dedicated to me). [What happened to] those pans will now warn the Israeli people.”
39 To pongah qaima Eleazar mah hmuihoih thlaekhaih sabaenawk to lak moe, hmaicam to khuk hanah sum kamling to kangphaek daek ah daengsak.
So Eleazar the priest collected the 250 pans for burning incense that had been used by the men who died in the fire. He hammered the pans very thin to make a covering for the altar, as Yahweh told Moses/me should be done.
40 Aaron ih caanawk na ai ah, kalah kami mah Angraeng hmaa ah hmuihoih thlaek hanah angzo nahaeloe, Korah hoi anih hnukbang kaminawk baktiah oh han om ai; to sabaenawk loe Israel kaminawk mah panoek poe han ih hmuen ah om tih, tiah Angraeng mah Mosi khaeah pae thuih ih lok baktih toengah Eleazar mah sak.
That warned the Israeli people that only those who were descendants of Aaron were permitted to burn incense for an offering to Yahweh. If anyone else did that, the same thing that happened to Korah and those who were with him would happen to them.
41 Khawnbang ah loe amkhueng Israel acaeng kaminawk boih mah, Mosi hoi Aaron khaeah, Nanghnik mah Angraeng ih kaminawk to na hum hoi boih boeh, tiah laisaep o thuih.
But the following morning, all the Israeli people started to complain against Aaron and Moses/me, saying “You have killed many people who belonged to Yahweh!”
42 Mosi hoi Aaron ih lok to aek hanah kaminawk nawnto amkhueng o, amkhuenghaih kahni im bangah angqoi o naah, khenah, tamai mah kahni im to khuk khoep moe, Angraeng lensawkhaih to amtueng.
When all the people gathered together to protest about what Aaron and Moses/I had done, they looked at the Sacred Tent and saw that the sacred cloud had covered it, and the glory of Yahweh had appeared.
43 To pacoengah Mosi hoi Aaron loe amkhuenghaih kahni im hma bangah caeh hoi.
Aaron and Moses/I went and stood in front of the Sacred Tent.
44 To naah Angraeng mah Mosi khaeah,
Then Yahweh said to Moses/me,
45 akra ai ah hae kaminawk hae ka tamit boih han boeh pongah, hae kaminawk salak hoiah kamhoe ah om ah, tiah a naa. To naah nihnik loe long ah akuep hoi.
“Get away from these people, in order that I can get rid of them immediately [without injuring you two]!” But Aaron and Moses/I prostrated themselves/ourselves on the ground [and prayed].
46 Mosi mah Aaron khaeah, Hmuihoih thlaekhaih sabae to la ah, hmaicam nui ih hmai to la ah loe, sabae thungah suek pacoengah, kaminawk khaeah karangah caeh ah loe, zae angbawnhaih to sahsak ah; Angraeng khae hoi palungphuihaih phak boeh pongah, nathaih kasae to phak boeh, tiah a naa.
Moses/I said to Aaron, “Quickly take another pan and put in it some burning/hot coals from the altar. Put incense in the pan, and carry it out among the people to atone for the sins of the people. Yahweh is very angry with them, and [I know that] a (severe plague/bad sickness) has already started among them.”
47 Mosi mah thuih ih lok baktih toengah, Aaron loe kaminawk salakah cawnh moe, a sak; khenah, to naah kaminawk khaeah nathaih kasae oh amtong boeh; toe Aaron mah hmuihoih to thlaek moe, kaminawk han angbawnhaih to sak pae.
So Aaron did what Moses/I told him. He took the burning incense out among the people. The plague had already started to strike the people, but Aaron continued to burn the incense so that God would forgive them for the sins they had committed.
48 Anih loe kahing hoi kadueh salakah angdoet; to naah kasae nathaih to dip.
He stood between the people who had already died and those who were still alive, and then the plague stopped.
49 Toe Korah pongah kadueh kaminawk to thui ai, to nathaih kasae pongah kadueh kaminawk loe sangqum boihah sang hatlai pali, qui sarihto oh o.
But 14,700 people had already died from that plague/sickness, in addition to the people who died with Korah.
50 Kasae nathaih dip pacoengah, Aaron loe Mosi khaeah amkhuenghaih kahni im thok taengah amlaem let.
Then after the plague had ended, Aaron and Moses/I returned to the entrance of the Sacred Tent.
