< Nehemiah 5 >
1 To naah kaminawk hoi a zunawk loe angmacae Judah nawkamyanawk to laisaep o thuih.
Then there was a great outcry from the people and their wives against their countrymen the Jews.
2 Thoemto kaminawk mah, Kaicae loe canu hoi capa ka tawnh o mangh; to pongah ka caak o moe, ka hing o thai hanah, cang phawh han angaih, tiah a thuih o.
For there were some who said, We, our sons and our daughters, are a great number: let us get grain, so that we may have food for our needs.
3 Thoemto kaminawk mah, Khokha pongah, cang qan hanah laikok, takha hoi imnawk to ka pawng o boeh, tiah thuih o.
And there were some who said, We are giving our fields and our vine-gardens and our houses for debt: let us get grain because we are in need.
4 Thoemto kaminawk mah loe, Lawk hoi misur takha nuiah siangpahrang mah kok ih tamut to paek hanah phoisa coi han angai boeh.
And there were others who said, We have given up our fields and our vine-gardens to get money for the king's taxes.
5 Vaihi kaicae ih ngan loe kaimacae nawkamyanawk ih ngan baktiah oh moe, kaicae ih caanawk doeh nihcae ih caanawk baktiah ni oh o; khenah, kaicae ih capa hoi canunawk loe tamna ah angcoeng hanah ka sak o boeh, thoemto aicae ih canunawk doeh misong ah hoih o boeh; kaicae ih lawk hoi misur takhanawk loe minawk kalah ban ah oh ving boeh pongah, misong ah kaom kaicae ih canunawk doeh ka krang o thai ai boeh, tiah a thuih o.
But our flesh is the same as the flesh of our countrymen, and our children as their children: and now we are giving our sons and daughters into the hands of others, to be their servants, and some of our daughters are servants even now: and we have no power to put a stop to it; for other men have our fields and our vine-gardens.
6 Nihcae laisaephaih hoi hae baktih loknawk to ka thaih naah, paroeai palung ka phui.
And on hearing their outcry and what they said I was very angry.
7 To naah ka poek moe, angraengnawk hoi ukkungnawk to ka kawk, Nihcae khaeah, nam nawkamyanawk nuiah acaa kamtlai hmoek ah phoisa na caak o, tiah ka zoeh pacoengah, to kawng thuih hanah kaminawk to kam kuengsak.
And after turning it over in my mind, I made a protest to the chiefs and the rulers, and said to them, Every one of you is taking interest from his countryman. And I got together a great meeting of protest.
8 Kai mah nihcae khaeah, Sithaw panoek ai kaminawk khaeah zawh ih aicae nawkamya Judahnawk to angcoeng thaih thung akrang hanah ka zom o; toe nam nawkamyanawk to kaicae mah akrang pae tih hmang, tiah poek pongah kapop aep ah na zawh o let han vop maw? To tih ai boeh loe nihcae to aimacae acaeng khaeah na zawh o let han maw? tiah ka naa. To naah nihcae mah lok pathim o ai, anghngai o duem.
And I said to them, We have given whatever we were able to give, to make our brothers the Jews free, who were servants and prisoners of the nations: and would you now give up your brothers for a price, and are they to become our property? Then they said nothing, answering not a word.
9 Kai mah, Na sak o ih hmuen hae hoih ai; Sithaw panoek ai kaminawk mah aicae kasae thuih han ai ah, aicae Angraeng Sithaw zithaih palungthin hoiah khosak han om ai maw?
And I said, What you are doing is not good: is it not the more necessary for you to go in the fear of our God, because of the shame which the nations may put on us?
10 Kam nawkamyanawk hoi ka tamnanawk mah doeh, minawk hanah phoisa hoi canghum to coisak toeng, toe a caa to kamtlai hmoek ah la o hmah si.
Even I and my servants have been taking interest for the money and the grain we have let them have. So now, let us give up this thing.
11 Vaihni roe ah, lawknawk, misur takhanawk, olive takhanawk, imnawk to paek o let ah, to pacoengah kamtlai hmoek ah a caa kangpung cumvaito ah na lak o ih phoisa, canghum, misurtui, thingthai hoi situinawk doeh paek o let ah, tiah ka naa.
Give back to them this very day their fields, their vine-gardens, their olive-gardens, and their houses, as well as a hundredth part of the money and the grain and the wine and the oil which you have taken from them.
12 Nihcae mah, Ka paek o let han hmang, tidoeh ka hni o mak ai boeh; na thuih ih lok baktih toengah ka sak o han, tiah thuih o. To naah a thuih o ih lok baktih toengah sak o hanah, qaimanawk to ka kawk moe, lokkamhaih ka saksak.
Then they said, We will give them back, and take nothing for them; we will do as you say. Then I sent for the priests and made them take an oath that they would keep this agreement.
13 Kaimah roe qan ih kahni to ka takhoek moe, Hae lokkamhaih pazui ai kami loe, Sithaw mah a im hoi a tawnh ih hmuennawk to hae tiah takhoek pae nasoe, tidoeh tawn ai ah takhoek pae bit nasoe, tiah ka naa. To naah rangpui mah, Amen, tiah thuih o moe, Angraeng to saphaw o; to kaminawk mah lokkamhaih baktih toengah sak o.
And shaking out the folds of my robe, I said, So may God send out from his house and his work every man who does not keep this agreement; even so let him be sent out and made as nothing. And all the meeting of the people said, So be it, and gave praise to the Lord. And the people did as they had said.
14 To pacoengah, Judah ukkung ah ka ohhaih saning, Artaxerxes siangpahrang ah ohhaih saning pumphaeto hoi kamtong saning qui thum, hnetto karoek to, saning hatlai hnetto thung, kaimah hoi kam nawknawk mah, ukkung mah caak han koi caaknaek to ka caa o ai.
Now from the time when I was made ruler of the people in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year till the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, for twelve years, I and my servants have never taken the food which was the right of the ruler.
15 Toe kai om ai naah toksah ukkungnawk loe kaminawk khaeah buh hoi misurtui pacoengah, sum kanglung shekel quipalito a kok o; ue, nihcae ih tamnanawk mah doeh kaminawk nuiah akaa tawnh o. Toe Sithaw to ka zit pongah, kai loe to tiah ka sah ai.
But earlier rulers who were before me made the people responsible for their upkeep, and took from them bread and wine at the rate of forty shekels of silver; and even their servants were lords over the people: but I did not do so, because of the fear of God.
16 Ue, kai loe tapang pakaahaih tok ni ka sak patomh poe; kaicae loe long doeh ka qan o ai; kai han toksah ka tamnanawk doeh tokkung ah ni kam khuengsak boih.
And I kept on with the work of this wall, and we got no land for ourselves: and all my servants were helping with the work.
17 Prae taengah kaom, kaicae khaeah angzo Sithaw panoek ai kaminawk pacoengah, Judah kaminawk hoi ukkung angraeng cumvai, quipangatonawk doeh, ka caboi nuiah ni buh a caak o.
And more than this, a hundred and fifty of the Jews and the rulers were guests at my table, in addition to those who came to us from the nations round about us.
18 Ni thokkruek maitaw tae maeto, tuu tarukto hoi aanawk to kai hanah ang paek o; ni hato kruek misurtui congca ang thak o; to tiah hmuen to oh, toe kaminawk hanah hmuenzit ah oh pongah, ukkungnawk han paek koi caaknaek to ka la ai.
Now the food made ready for one day was one ox and six fat sheep, as well as fowls; and once in ten days a store of all sorts of wine: but all the same, I did not take the food to which the ruler had a right, because the people were crushed under a hard yoke.
19 Aw ka Sithaw, hae kaminawk nuiah ka sak ih kahoih hmuennawk pongah, na pahnet hmah, tiah lawk ka thuih.
Keep in mind, O my God, for my good, all I have done for this people.
