In those days there is no king in Israel, and in those days the tribe of the Danite is seeking an inheritance to inhabit for itself, for [that] has not fallen to it to that day in the midst of the tribes of Israel by inheritance.
2 To pongah Dan kaminawk loe prae pakrong hanah, Zorah hoi Estaol vangpui hoiah misa kahoih moe, tha kacak angmacae ih kami pangato patoeh o; nihcae loe caeh oh moe, Ephraim mae nui ah kaom Mikah im ah akun o; to ah qumto a iih o.
And the sons of Dan send, out of their family, five of their men—men, sons of valor—from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to traverse the land, and to search it, and they say to them, “Go, search the land”; and they come into the hill-country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodge there.
3 Nihcae Mikah im ah phak o naah, thendoeng Levi ih lok to maat o pongah, to ah akun o moe, anih khaeah, Mi mah maw hae ah ang caeh haih? Tipongah hae ah na oh loe? tiah a naa o.
They [are] with the household of Micah, and they have discerned the voice of the young man, the Levite, and turn aside there, and say to him, “Who has brought you here? And what are you doing in this [place]? And why are you here?”
4 To naah Levi mah nihcae khaeah, Mikah mah sak ih hmuen to a thuih pae; hae kami mah kai ang tlai pongah, anih ih qaima ah ka oh, tiah a naa.
And he says to them, “Thus and thus has Micah done to me; and he hires me, and I am for a priest to him.”
5 To naah nihcae mah Levi khaeah, Kholong ka caeh o haih hae amkah tih maw? Sithaw khaeah na dueng paeh, tiah a naa o.
And they say to him, “Please ask of God, and we know whether our way on which we are going is prosperous.”
6 Qaima mah nihcae khaeah, Lunghoihta hoiah caeh oh, Angraeng mah na caehhaih loklam patuek boeh, tiah a naa.
And the priest says to them, “Go in peace; before YHWH [is] your way in which you go.”
7 To pongah to kami pangatonawk loe to ahmuen hoiah angthawk o moe, Laish vangpui ah caeh o; to ah kaom kaminawk loe Sidon kaminawk baktiah misa zithaih tawn o ai, kamong ah khosak o; nihcae azatpaw hanah prae thungah zaehoikung tawn o ai, nihcae loe Sidon kaminawk hoiah angthla o parai, mi hoiah doeh angbethaih tawn o ai, tiah a hnuk o.
And the five men go, and come to Laish, and see the people which [is] in its midst, dwelling confidently, according to the custom of Zidonians, quiet and confident; and there is none putting to shame in the land in [any] thing, possessing restraint, and they [are] far off from the Zidonians, and have no word with [any] man.
8 To pacoengah Zorah hoi Estaol vangpui ah amlaem o let; to naah angmah ih nawkamyanawk mah, Khoqam hnukhaih dan kawbangmaw oh? tiah a dueng o.
And they come to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol, and their brothers say to them, “What [did] you [find]?”
9 Nihcae mah, Angthawk oh; nihcae to tuh si! Khenah, kahoih parai prae to ka hnuk o boeh; nang hngai o duem han maw? Prae thungah akun moe, qawktoep hanah mong o sut hmah.
And they say, “Rise, and we go up against them, for we have seen the land, and behold—very good; and you are keeping silent! Do not be slothful to go—to enter to possess the land.
10 To ahmuen to na phak o naah, misa zithaih tawn ai ah khosah kaminawk hoi kalen parai prae to na hnu o tih; Sithaw mah to prae to nangcae ban ah paek tih; to ahmuen ah loe long nuiah kaom hmuennawk to akoep boih boeh, tiah a naa o.
When you go, you come to a confident people, and the land [is] large on both hands, for God has given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything which [is] in the land.”
11 To pongah Dan acaeng kami cumvai taruktonawk loe, Zorah hoi Eshtaol hoiah misatukhaih maiphaw maica to sinh o moe, a caeh o.
And there journey there, of the family of the Danite, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, six hundred men girded with weapons of war.

And they go up and encamp in Kirjath-Jearim, in Judah, therefore they have called that place, “Camp of Dan,” until this day; behold, behind Kirjath-Jearim.
13 Nihcae loe Ephraim mae nuiah caeh o moe, Mikah ih im to phak o.
And they pass over there [to] the hill-country of Ephraim, and come to the house of Micah.

And the five men, those going to traverse the land of Laish, answer and say to their brothers, “Have you known that in these houses there is an ephod, and teraphim, and carved image, and molten image? And now, know what you do.”
15 Nihcae loe angqoi o moe, Mikah ih im ah kaom, thendoeng Levi khaeah caeh o pacoengah, anih to lok tapring o.
And they turn aside there, and come to the house of the young man, the Levite, the house of Micah, and ask of him of welfare—
16 Misatuk hanah amsak Dan kami cumvai taruktonawk loe, khongkha taengah angdoet o.
(and the six hundred men girded with their weapons of war, who [are] of the sons of Dan, are standing at the opening of the gate)—

indeed, the five men, those going to traverse the land, go up—they have come in there—they have taken the carved image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image—and the priest is standing at the opening of the gate, and the six hundred men who are girded with weapons of war—
18 To kaminawk loe Mikah ih imthung ah akun o moe, daengh ih krang, kahni, teraphim krang hoi atui pakaw moe, sak ih krangnawk to lak o. To pacoengah qaima mah nihcae khaeah, Timaw na sak o loe? tiah a naa.
indeed, these have entered the house of Micah, and take the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest says to them, “What are you doing?”
19 Nihcae mah qaima khaeah, Om duem ah, na pakha to ban hoi tamuep loe, kaicae hoi nawnto angzo ah; kaicae khae angzoh loe, kaicae ih ampa hoi qaima ah om ah; imthung takoh maeto ih qaima ah oh pongah loe, Israel acaeng hoi imthung takoh ih qaima ah oh to hoih kue ai maw? tiah a naa o.
And they say to him, “Keep silent, lay your hand on your mouth, and go with us, and be for a father and for a priest to us: is it better your being a priest for the house of one man, or your being priest for a tribe and for a family in Israel?”
20 To naah qaima loe anghoe moe, kahni, teraphim krang hoi daeng ih krang to lak moe, to kaminawk khaeah a caeh.
And the heart of the priest is glad, and he takes the ephod, and the teraphim, and the carved image, and goes into the midst of the people,

and call to the sons of Dan, and they turn their faces around, and say to Micah, “What [is this] to you that you have been called together?”
24 Anih mah, Ka sak ih sithawnawk hoi kai ih qaima to na lak o moe, na caeh o haih ving pongah ni; to hmuenawk ai ah loe tih kalah hmuen maw ka tawnh vop? Nangcae mah tih raihaih maw na tawnh? tiah lok nang dueng o lat loe, tiah a naa.
And he says, “You have taken my gods which I made, and the priest, and you go; and what more do I [have]? And what [is] this you say to me, What [is this] to you?”
25 Dan kaminawk mah anih khaeah, Na lok thaih han ka koeh o ai; to tih ai nahaeloe palungphui kaminawk mah na hmang o ueloe, nangmah hoi na imthung takoh kaminawk ih hinghaih to amro moeng tih, tiah a naa o.
And the sons of Dan say to him, “Do not let your voice be heard with us, lest men bitter in soul fall on you, and you have gathered your life, and the life of your household”;
26 Dan kaminawk mah anih to caeh o taak poe; Mikah mah nihcae to ka pazawk thai mak ai, tiah panoek naah, angmah im ah amlaem taak.
and the sons of Dan go on their way, and Micah sees that they are stronger than he, and turns, and goes back to his house.

And they have taken that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and come in against Laish, against a people quiet and confident, and strike them by the mouth of the sword, and have burned the city with fire,
28 Sidon hoi angthla parai ahmuen ah oh o moe, mi hoiah doeh angpehhaih tawn o ai pongah, nihcae pahlongkung mi doeh om ai; vangpui loe Beth-Rehob taeng ih azawn ah oh. Dan kaminawk mah vangpui to sak o moe, to ahmuen ah oh o.
and there is no deliverer, for it [is] far off from Sidon, and they have no word with [any] man, and it [is] in the valley which [is] by Beth-Rehob; and they build the city, and dwell in it,
29 To vangpui kangquem ahmin loe Laish, tiah kawk o; toe amsae Israel mah sak ih a capa, Dan ih ahmin to lak o moe, vangpui to Dan, tiah a sak o.
and call the name of the city Dan, by the name of their father Dan, who was born to Israel; and yet Laish [is] the name of the city at the first.

31 Sithaw ih im Shiloh ah oh nathung, Mikah mah sak ih krang ni nihcae mah patoh o poe.
And they appoint for themselves the carved image of Micah, which he had made, all the days of the house of God being in Shiloh.
