< Jonah 1 >
1 Amittai capa Jonah khaeah, Angraeng ih lok to angzoh,
Now Yahweh’s word came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
2 angthawk ah loe, Nineveh vangpui ah caeh ah, nihcae sethaih ka hmaa ah phak boeh pongah, to vangpui misa haih lok to taphong ah.
“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.”
3 Toe Jonah loe Angraeng hmaa hoiah angthawk moe, Tarshish vangpui ah cawnh ving hanah amsak, to pongah Joppa vangpui bangah a caeh. To ah Joppa vangpui ah caehhaih palongpui maeto a hnuk; Angraeng hmaa hoi loih thai hanah, palongpui angthuenghaih atho to paek moe, Tarshish vangpui ah a caeh.
But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.
4 Toe Angraeng mah tuipui ah thacak parai takhi to patoeh, to naah tuipui ah takhi sae to songh, to pongah palong to amro duih.
But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.
5 To naah palongpui angthueng kaminawk loe zit o moe, kami boih mah angmacae ih sithaw to palawk o, palongpui anghoep thai hanah, hmuenmaenawk to tuipui thungah a vah o. Toe Jonah loe palongpui tlim ah caeh tathuk, to ah angsong moe, a iih.
Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.
6 To pongah palongpui mongh kalen koek anih khaeah caeh moe, Nang loe kawbang maw na iih thaih? Aicae anghmat o han ai ah, angthawk ah loe, na Sithaw to palawk ah; anih mah aicae han kho na poek pae khoe doeh om tih, tiah a naa.
So the ship master came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God! Maybe your God will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”
7 To naah a thungah kaom kaminawk mah, Angzo oh, mi pongah maw hae baktih raihaih hae aicae nui ah phak, tiah panoek thai hanah taham khethaih to sah o si, tiah maeto hoi maeto thuih o. Nihcae mah taham khethaih to sak o naah, Jonah nuiah krak.
They all said to each other, “Come! Let’s cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
8 To pacoengah nihcae mah anih khaeah, Aicae nuiah kaom raihaih loe mi pongah maw oh? Na thui ah, tih tok maw na sak? Naa bang hoiah maw nang zoh? Naa bang ih prae ah maw na oh? Naa bang ih kami maw? tiah lok a dueng o.
Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?”
9 Anih mah nihcae khaeah, Kai loe Hebru kami ah ka oh, tuipui hoi saoeng boih Sahkung, Angraeng, van Sithaw to ka zit, tiah a naa.
He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.”
10 To lok to palongpui angthueng kaminawk mah thaih o naah, zit o aep, Jonah mah nihcae khaeah thuih pae ih lok baktih toengah, to kaminawk mah anih loe Angraeng khae hoi kacawn ving kami ni, tiah panoek o naah, anih khaeah, Tipongah hae tiah na oh loe? tiah a naa o.
Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What have you done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.
11 Tuipui ih tuiphu loe kanung aep ah angthawk pongah, nihcae mah Jonah khaeah, kangthawk tuipui ih tuiphu hae dipsak thai hanah, nang hae kawbang maw kang sak o han? tiah a naa o.
Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.
12 Jonah mah nihcae khaeah, Kai hae na la oh loe, tuipui thungah na va o halat ah, to tiah nahaeloe tuiphu to dip tih. Kai pongah ni nangcae nuiah takhi sae songh, tiah ka panoek, tiah a naa.
He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.”
13 To tiah a thuih pae cadoeh palongpui mongh kaminawk loe tuitaeng bangah mongh hanah tha pathok o vop, toe tuiphu to angthawk moe, takhi sae kanung aep ah song pongah, caeh o thai ai.
Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them.
14 To naah nihcae loe Angraeng khaeah hang o, Aw Angraeng, tahmenhaih kang hnik o, tahmenhaih kang hnik o, hae kami ih hinghaih to lak hanah, kaicae hae duehsak hmah, zaehaih panoek ai kami maeto ih athii pongah kaicae hae zaehaih na net hmah, Aw Angraeng, na koeh ih baktih toengah ni, hae hmuen hae na sak boeh, tiah lawkthuih o.
Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, “We beg you, Yahweh, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.”
15 To pongah Jonah to lak o moe, tuipui thungah a vah o: to naah kangthawk tuipui ih tuiphu to dip.
So they took up Jonah and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.
16 To pacoengah loe to ah kaom kaminawk mah Angraeng to paroeai zit o, Angraeng khaeah hmuen tathlanghaih a sak o moe, lokkamhaih to a sak o.
Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vows.
17 Angraeng mah Jonah paaeh hanah tangapui to patoeh. Jonah loe tanga zok thungah ni thumto hoi qum thumto oh.
Yahweh prepared a huge fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
