< Ezekiel 18 >

1 Angraeng ih lok kai khaeah angzoh,
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
2 ampanawk mah kathaw misurtui to naek o moe, a caanawk haa kin o, tiah Israel prae thungah na patoh ih palungha lok mah thuikoehhaih loe tih maw?
“What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge’?
3 Angraeng Sithaw mah, Kai ka hing baktiah, Israel prae thungah to palungha lok patohhaih om mak ai boeh.
As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.
4 Khenah, kahing pakhra boih loe kai ih ni; ampa ih pakhra loe Kai ih pakhra ah oh baktih toengah, a capa ih pakhra doeh Kai ih ni; kazae pakhra loe duek han oh, tiah thuih.
Behold, every soul belongs to Me; both father and son are Mine. The soul who sins is the one who will die.
5 Toe katoeng poekhaih, kahoih hmuen hoi patuk ih lok baktiah toksah kami loe,
Now suppose a man is righteous and does what is just and right:
6 maenawk nuiah buhcaa mak ai, Israel imthung takoh ih krangnawk doeh khen mak ai, a imtaeng kami ih zu doeh zae haih mak ai, athii kahnu nongpata khaeah doeh caeh mak ai.
He does not eat at the mountain or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife or approach a woman during her period.
7 Mi kawbaktih doeh pacaekthlaek mak ai, laiba tawnkung mah lokmaihaih to sak moe, akrang let hanah a pawng ih hmuen to paek let, minawk ih hmuen to lomh ai, zok amthlam kaminawk to caaknaek a paek moe, bangkrai ah kaom kaminawk to khukbuen a paek;
He does not oppress another, but restores the pledge to the debtor. He does not commit robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing.
8 a caa kapung lak han ih minawk han hmuenmae to coisak ai, kapung a caa doeh la ai, kahoih ai hmuen to sah ai, kami boih nuiah toenghaih hoiah lok takroek, tiah thuih:
He does not engage in usury or take excess interest, but he withholds his hand from iniquity and executes true justice between men.
9 ka patuk ih loknawk to pazui moe, ka lokcaekhaih to pakuem, anih loe katoengah toksak moe, katoeng kami ah oh pongah, anih loe hing tangtang tih, tiah Angraeng mah thuih.
He follows My statutes and faithfully keeps My ordinances. That man is righteous; surely he will live,
10 Toe anih ih capa loe minawk ih hmuenmae lomh thaih kami, kami hum kami, kahoih ai hmuennawk sah kami,
Now suppose that man has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these things,
11 a sak han koi tok maeto doeh sah ai, maenawk nuiah buhcaa kami, a imtaeng kami ih zu parueng pae kami;
though the father has done none of them: Indeed, the son eats at the mountain and defiles his neighbor’s wife.
12 kamtang hoi kavawt kaminawk to pacaekthlaek moe, minawk ih hmuenmae lomh kami, paek let han lokmaih moe, pawng ih hmuennawk paek let ai kami, krangnawk to a bok moe, panuet thok hmuennawk sah kami;
He oppresses the poor and needy; he commits robbery and does not restore a pledge. He lifts his eyes to idols; he commits abominations.
13 a caa kapung to caak hanah minawk khaeah hmuen coisak moe, a caa kapung la kami loe hing tih maw? Hing mak ai! Panuet thok hae baktih hmuennawk to a sak pongah, anih loe dueh tangtang tih; anih ih athii loe angmah nuiah krah tih.
He engages in usury and takes excess interest. Will this son live? He will not! Since he has committed all these abominations, he will surely die; his blood will be on his own head.
14 Toe to kami ih capa loe ampa mah sak ih zaehaihnawk to a hnuk boih, kho a poek moe, to baktih zaehaihnawk to sah ai,
Now suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father has committed, considers them, and does not do likewise:
15 maenawk nuiah buh to caa ai, Israel imthung takoh mah bok ih krangnawk doeh bok ai, a imtaeng kami ih zu doeh parueng ai;
He does not eat at the mountain or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife.
16 mi kawbaktih kami doeh pacaekthlaek ai, paek let han loksuek ih baktiah pawng ih hmuenmaenawk to la ai, mi ih hmuenmae doeh lomh ai, zok amthlam kami han caaknaek paek kami, bangkrai ah kaom kaminawk han doeh khukbuen paek kami;
He does not oppress another, or retain a pledge, or commit robbery. He gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing.
17 amtang kaminawk han hmuenmae paek kami, acaa kapung phoisa to la ai, ka lokcaekhaih to pakuem moe, ka paek ih lok pazui kami loe ampa zaehaih pongah dueh mak ai, hing tangtang tih.
He withholds his hand from harming the poor and takes no interest or usury. He keeps My ordinances and follows My statutes. Such a man will not die for his father’s iniquity. He will surely live.
18 Toe anih ih ampa loe angmah ih amnawk to pacaekthlaek moe, angmah ih kaminawk nuiah kahoih ai hmuen to sak pongah, khenah, anih loe a zaehaih baktiah dueh tih.
As for his father, he will die for his own iniquity, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother, and did what was wrong among his people.
19 Toe nangcae mah loe, Tikhoe ampa mah sak ih zaehaih to a capa mah zok ai loe? tiah na thui o tih. A capa loe katoeng hmuen hoi patuk ih lok baktiah tok a sak, ka paek ih loknawk to pazui moe, a sak pongah, anih loe hing tangtang tih.
Yet you may ask, ‘Why shouldn’t the son bear the iniquity of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right, carefully observing all My statutes, he will surely live.
20 Kazae pakhra loe dueh tih. Ampa mah sak ih zaehaih to a capa mah zok mak ai, a capa mah sak ih zaehaih doeh ampa mah zok mak ai; katoeng kami toenghaih loe a nuiah om ueloe, kasae kami sehaih doeh angmah nuiah ni om tih.
The soul who sins is the one who will die. A son will not bear the iniquity of his father, and a father will not bear the iniquity of his son. The righteousness of the righteous man will fall upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked man will fall upon him.
21 Toe kami zae loe a sak ih zaehaihnawk boih hoiah amlaem, ka paek ih loknawk boih to pakuem moe, katoeng hmuen hoi patuk ih lok baktiah tok to sah nahaeloe, anih loe hing tangtang tih, dueh mak ai.
But if the wicked man turns from all the sins he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die.
22 Anih mah sak ih zaehaihnawk boih to pakuem pae mak ai boeh; anih loe a sak ih katoeng hmuen pongah hing tih.
None of the transgressions he has committed will be held against him. Because of the righteousness he has practiced, he will live.
23 Kazae kami duek pongah palung kang hoe maw? Anih mah a caehhaih loklam angqoi taak moe, hinghaih hnuk to ka koeh haih kue na ai maw? tiah Angraeng Sithaw mah thuih.
Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Lord GOD. Wouldn’t I prefer that he turn from his ways and live?
24 Toe katoeng kami loe a toenghaih hoiah angqoi ving moe, kasae kaminawk mah sak o ih zaehaih hoi panuet thok hmuennawk to sah nahaeloe, anih to hing tih maw? Canghnii ah a sak ih katoeng hmuennawk to pakuem pae mak ai boeh; a sakpazaehaih hmuen hoiah a sak ih zaehaih pongah, anih loe dueh tih.
But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, committing the same abominations as the wicked, will he live? None of the righteous acts he did will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness and sin he has committed, he will die.
25 Toe nangcae mah loe, Angraeng ih loklam loe toeng ai, tiah na thuih o. Aw Israel imthung takohnawk, tahngai ah; Kai ih loklam loe toeng, nangcae ih loklam loe toeng ai!
Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is it My way that is unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
26 Katoeng kami loe a toenghaih to caehtaak moe, zaehaih sah nahaeloe, to zaehaih pongah dueh tih, anih loe a sak ih zaehaih pongah dueh tih.
If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, he will die for this. He will die because of the iniquity he has committed.
27 Toe kami zae loe a sak ih zaehaih to angqoi taak moe, katoeng hmuen hoi patuk ih lok baktiah toksah nahaeloe, a hinghaih to pahlong tih.
But if a wicked man turns from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will save his life.
28 A sakpazae ih hmuennawk boih to a poek het moe, a toengh sut boeh pongah, anih loe hing tangtang tih, dueh mak ai.
Because he considered and turned from all the transgressions he had committed, he will surely live; he will not die.
29 Toe Israel imthung takoh mah loe, Angraeng ih loklam loe toeng ai, tiah thuih o. Aw Israel imthung takoh, Kai ih loklam loe toeng, nangcae ih loklam loe toeng ai!
Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are My ways unjust, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
30 To pongah, Aw Israel imthung takoh, kami boih a caehhaih loklam baktih toengah lok ka caek han, tiah Angraeng Sithaw mah thuih. Dawnpakhuem oh loe, na sakpazae o ih hmuennawk boih thung hoiah amlaem oh; to tiah nahaeloe na sakpazae o ih hmuennawk loe nam rohaih ah om mak ai.
Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, so that your iniquity will not become your downfall.
31 Na sakpazae ih hmuennawk to takhoe o boih loe, kangtha palungthin hoi muithla to talawk oh; Aw Israel imthung takoh, tipongah na duek o han loe?
Cast away from yourselves all the transgressions you have committed, and fashion for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, O house of Israel?
32 Dueh kami duekhaih pongah palung Kang hoe ai, to pongah dawnpakhuem oh loe, hing oh! tiah Angraeng Sithaw mah thuih.
For I take no pleasure in anyone’s death, declares the Lord GOD. So repent and live!
