< Exodus 20 >
1 Hae loknawk boih Sithaw mah thuih;
Then God said this [to the Israeli people: ]
2 kai loe misong ah na ohhaih, Izip prae thung hoi nangcae zaehoikung, Angraeng Sithaw ah ka oh.
“I am Yahweh God, the one you [worship]. I am the one who brought you out of Egypt. I am the one who freed you from being slaves [there].
3 Ka hmaa ah Sithaw kalah tawn hmah.
[So] you must worship [only] me; you must not worship any other god.
4 Van ranui ah kaom krang maw, to tih ai boeh loe long tlim ah kaom krang maw, to tih ai boeh loe tui thungah kaom hmuen hoi kanghmong, kawbaktih krang doeh sah hmah;
You must not carve/make for yourselves any idol that represents anything in the sky or that is on the ground or that is in the water under the ground/earth.
5 nihcae hmaa ah akuep o hmah loe, bok o hmah; na Angraeng Sithaw, Kai loe ut panoek Sithaw ah ka oh moe, kai hnuma ampanawk ih zaehaih pongah, a caanawk adung thumto hoi palito karoek to thuitaekkung ah ka oh.
You must not bow down to any idol and worship it, because I am Yahweh God, and I (am very jealous/want you to worship me only). I will punish those who sin and hate me. I will punish not only them, but I will punish (their descendants, down to the third and fourth generation/their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren).
6 Toe kai palung moe, ka thuih ih lok pazui kaminawk loe a caanawk ih adung sangto pong kapop adung khoek to amlunghaih patuekkung ah ka oh.
But I will steadfastly love thousands of generations of those who love me and obey my commandments (OR, I will love for thousands of generations.)
7 Avang ai ah na Angraeng Sithaw ih ahmin to patoh hmah; anih ih ahmin tidoeh na ai ah patoh rumram kami loe, Angraeng mah anih to khen sut mak ai.
Do not use my name carelessly (OR, for wrong/evil purposes), because I am Yahweh God, the one whom you [should worship], and I will certainly punish those who use my name for wrong/evil purposes [LIT].
8 Sabbath ni to ciimsak hanah pakuem poe ah.
Do not forget that the seventh day [of every week] is mine, so dedicate those days to me.
9 Ni tarukto thung toksah ah, na tok to sah boih ah.
There are six days each week for you to do all your work,
10 Toe ni sarihto naah loe, na Angraeng Sithaw ih Sabbath niah oh; to niah loe tih tok doeh sah hmah; nangmah doeh, na capa doeh, na canu doeh, na tamna nongpa doeh, na tamna nongpata doeh, na tawnh ih moinawk hoi na khongkha thungah kaom angvin doeh toksak o han om ai;
but the seventh day is a day of rest, a day dedicated to me, Yahweh God, the one whom you [should worship]. On that day you must not do any work. You and your sons and daughters and your male and female slaves must not work. You must not even force your livestock to work, and you must not allow foreigners to work, those who are living in your country.
11 Angraeng mah ni tarukto thung van hoi long, tuipui hoi a thungah kaom hmuennawk boih to sak moe, ni sarihto naah loe anghak; to pongah Angraeng mah Sabbath ni to tahamhoihaih paek moe, ciimcaisak.
I, Yahweh, created the sky, the earth, the ocean, and everything that is in them, in six days. Then I stopped my work of creating everything, and rested on the seventh day. That is the reason that I, Yahweh, have blessed the rest day and set it apart [to be a sacred/special day].
12 Nam no hoi nam pa khingya ah; to tih nahaeloe Angraeng Sithaw mah paek ih, prae thungah hinglung na sawk tih.
Honor/Respect your fathers and your mothers, in order that you may live a long time in the land that I, Yahweh God, will give you.
14 Zu sava laep ah nongpa nongpata zaehaih sah hmah.
Do not (commit adultery/have sex with anyone other than your spouse).
16 Na imtaeng kami nuiah amsawn hnukung ah angdoe hmah.
Do not falsely accuse anyone [of committing a crime].
17 Na imtaeng kami ih im to khit hmah; na imtaeng kami ih zu to khit hmah, to tih ai boeh loe anih ih tamna nongpa, to tih ai boeh loe anih ih tamna nongpata, anih ih maitaw doeh, anih ih laa hrang doeh, na imtaeng kami ih kawbaktih hmuen doeh khit hmah, tiah lok a paek.
Do not (covet/desire to have) someone else’s house, someone else’s wife, someone else’s male or female slave, someone else’s livestock, someone else’s donkeys, or anything else that some other person owns.”
18 Khopazih tuen, tangphrapuekhaih hoi mongkah lok to kaminawk mah thaih o, mae thung hoi tacawt hmaikhue to a hnuk o naah, angnawn o moe, kangthla ah angdoet o.
When the people heard the thunder and saw the lightning, and when they heard the sound of the trumpet and saw the smoke on the mountain, they were afraid and trembled. They stood at a distance,
19 Mosi khaeah, Kaicae khae lok na thui ah, kang tahngaih pae o han; Sithaw mah kaicae khaeah lokthui hmah nasoe, ka dueh o moeng tih, tiah a naa o.
and said to Moses/me, “If you speak to us, we will listen. But do not let God speak any more to us. [We are afraid that] if he speaks [any more] to us, we will die.”
20 Mosi mah kaminawk khaeah, Zii o hmah; mikhmai ah anih zithaih na tawnh o moe, zaehaih na sak o han ai ah, nangcae tanoek han ih Sithaw angzoh tathuk boeh, tiah a naa.
Moses/I replied, “Do not be afraid! God has come to determine/test [how you will behave]. He wants you to revere him, and to not sin.”
21 Kaminawk loe kangthla ah angdoet o, toe Mosi loe Sithaw ohhaih kathah parai tamai kamnum ohhaih bangah a caeh.
Then, as the people [watched from] a distance, Moses/I went close to the black cloud where God was.
22 To naah Angraeng mah Mosi khaeah, Israel kaminawk khaeah, Kai mah van hoiah kang thuih ih lok to na hnuk o boeh, tiah thui paeh, tiah a naa.
Yahweh said to Moses/me, “Say this to the Israeli people: ‘You have heard how I, Yahweh, have spoken to you from heaven. I told you that you must not make any idols of silver or gold [that you will worship instead] of me.
23 Kai nang bok o naah, nangmacae hanah sui sithaw doeh, sum kanglung sithaw doeh sah o hmah.
24 Kai hanah long hoiah hmaicam mae to sah ah loe, to long hmaicam nuiah hmai angbawnhaih, angdaeh angbawnhaih to tuu hoi maitaw taenawk hoiah sah ah; kai ih ahmin pakoehhaih ahmuen kruekah, nang khaeah kang zoh moe, tahamhoihaih kang paek han.
Make for me an altar from dirt. Sacrifice on it the animals that you will burn completely. Also sacrifice on it the animals that you will not burn completely, to maintain fellowship with me. Worship me [MTY] in any place that I choose for you to honor/worship me; and if you do that, I will come to you and bless you.
25 Kai hanah thlung hmaicam to na sak nahaeloe, thuk ih thlung kangphaek nuiah hmaicam to sah hmah; thlung kangphaek thukhaih sum to na phok tahang naah, hmaicam to nam hnongsak ah oh boeh.
If you make for me an altar from stones, do not make it from stones that you have cut [to make them look nice], because you will make the altar unsuitable for [worshiping] me if you use tools to cut the stones.
26 Bangkrai ah na ohhaih amtueng han ai ah, hmaicam ranui ah dawhhaih thlak to sah hmah, tiah a naa.
Do not make an altar that has steps in front of it, because if you do that, [people] could see your naked [buttocks] as you go up the steps.’”
