< Deuteronomy 4 >

1 Aw Israel caanawk, Na hing o moe, nam saenawk ih Angraeng Sithaw mah paek ih prae thungah na kun o pacoengah, prae to na toep o thai hanah, kang patuk o ih lokcaekhaih hoi zaehhoihaih daannawk hae tahngai oh.
Hear now, O Israel, the statutes and ordinances I am teaching you to follow, so that you may live and may enter and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.
2 Kang paek o ih lok hae thap o hmah loe, azuk o hmah; kang paek o ih na Angraeng Sithaw ih kaalok to pakuem oh.
You must not add to or subtract from what I command you, so that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I am giving you.
3 Baal-Peor pongah Angraeng mah sak ih hmuen to na hnuk o boeh; Baal-Peor hnukbang kaminawk loe Sithaw mah nangcae salak hoiah hum boih boeh.
Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal-peor, for the LORD your God destroyed from among you all who followed Baal of Peor.
4 Toe na Angraeng Sithaw to kacakah patawn kaminawk loe, vaihni khoek to na hing o boih.
But you who held fast to the LORD your God are alive to this day, every one of you.
5 Khenah, ka Angraeng Sithaw mah patuk ih baktih toengah, na toep o han ih prae thungah na patoh o hanah, lokcaekhaih hoi zaehhoihaih daannawk to kang patuk o.
See, I have taught you statutes and ordinances just as the LORD my God has commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land that you are about to enter and possess.
6 To pongah lokcaekhaih hoi zaehhoihaih daannawk to pazui oh; to tiah ni to thuitaekhaih lok kathaih prae kaminawk boih hma ah, nangcae palunghahaih hoi panoek thaihaih to amtueng ueloe, kalen parai hae kaminawk loe palungha hoi panoek thaihaih tawn kaminawk ah oh o, tiah thui o tih.
Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding in the sight of the peoples, who will hear of all these statutes and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”
7 Aicae lawk a thuih o naah, aicae khenzawn aicae ih Angraeng Sithaw baktiah, lawkthuih naah nihcae taengah kaom, kalen parai acaeng mi maw kaom?
For what nation is great enough to have a god as near to them as the LORD our God is to us whenever we call on Him?
8 Vaihniah nangcae hma ah ka suek ih katoeng lokcaekhaih hoiah zaehhoihaih daan katawn, kalen acaeng mi maw kaom?
And what nation is great enough to have righteous statutes and ordinances like this entire law I set before you today?
9 Acoe oh loe, na palungthin to patawn oh, to tih ai nahaeloe na hnuk o ih hmuennawk to na pahnet o ueloe, na hing thung palung thung hoiah amkhraeng o taak ving moeng tih; na caanawk to patuk oh, na caanawk ih caa patoeng doeh patuk oh.
Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves, so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen, and so that they do not slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and grandchildren.
10 Horeb ah na Angraeng Sithaw hmaa ah nang doet o; to naah Angraeng mah kai khaeah, Long nuiah khosak nathung kai zithaih to panoek o moe, a caanawk to patuk o thaih pacoengah, ka lok to thaisak hanah, kaminawk to ka hma ah pakhueng ah, tiah ang naa.
The day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, the LORD said to me, “Gather the people before Me to hear My words, so that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach them to their children.”
11 To naah nang zoh o moe, mae tlim ah nang doet o; mae loe van um khoek to hmai angqong pongah, khovinghaih, tamai tabokhaih hoi kathah parai khovinghaih mah khuk khoep.
You came near and stood at the base of the mountain, a mountain blazing with fire to the heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness.
12 To naah Angraeng mah hmai thung hoiah nangcae khaeah lokthuih; nangcae mah lok na thaih o; toe krang loe na hnu o ai, lok khue ni na thaih o.
And the LORD spoke to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of the words, but saw no form; there was only a voice.
13 To naah nangcae mah na sak o hanah, angmah ih lokmaihaih to nangcae khaeah ang thuih; anih mah thlung hnetto nuiah ang tarik pae moe, nangcae hanah kaalok hato ang paek.
He declared to you His covenant, which He commanded you to follow—the Ten Commandments that He wrote on two tablets of stone.
14 To naah na caeh o moe, na toep o han ih prae thungah na pazui o hanah, Angraeng mah lokcaekhaih hoi zaehhoihaih daannawk to kai khaeah ang thuih.
At that time the LORD commanded me to teach you the statutes and ordinances you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.
15 Horeb ah Angraeng mah hmai thung hoiah nangcae khaeah lokthuih naah, tih krang doeh na hnu o ai; to pongah acoehaih hoiah khosah oh.
So since you saw no form of any kind on the day the LORD spoke to you out of the fire at Horeb, be careful
16 Krang to sah o hmah; kawbaktih kanghmong krang doeh sah o hmah; nongpa krang doeh, nongpata krang doeh sah o hmah.
that you do not act corruptly and make an idol for yourselves of any form or shape, whether in the likeness of a male or female,
17 Long nuiah kaom taw moi ih krang maw, van ah kazawk tavaa ih krang maw,
of any beast that is on the earth or bird that flies in the air,
18 long ah kavak krang maw, tui thungah kaom tanga ih krang maw doeh sah o hmah:
or of any creature that crawls on the ground or fish that is in the waters below.
19 van bangah na khet o moe, na Angraeng Sithaw mah van tlim ah kaom prae kaminawk boih hanah tapraek pae ih hmuennawk boih, ni, khrah, cakaehnawk hoi van ah kaom hmuennawk boih bok hanah, minawk mah ang thuih o naah, to hmuennawk hma ah akuep o hmah loe, bok o hmah.
When you look to the heavens and see the sun and moon and stars—all the host of heaven—do not be enticed to bow down and worship what the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven.
20 Angraeng mah nangcae to sum hmai kamngaeh, Izip prae thung hoiah, vaihni na oh o haih prae ah, angmah ih qawktoep hanah ang zaeh o boeh.
Yet the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of His inheritance, as you are today.
21 Nangcae pongah ka nuiah Angraeng palungphui; kai hae Jordan vapui angkatsak ai, na Angraeng Sithaw mah kai khaeah qawktoep hanah nangcae khaeah kang paek ih kahoih prae thungah na kun thai mak ai, tiah ang naa.
The LORD, however, was angry with me on account of you, and He swore that I would not cross the Jordan to enter the good land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
22 Kai loe hae prae ah ni ka duek han boeh; Jordan vapui kang kat mak ai; toe nangcae loe vapui to nang kat o ueloe, to prae kahoih to qawk ah na toep o tih.
For I will not be crossing the Jordan, because I must die in this land. But you shall cross over and take possession of that good land.
23 Na Angraeng Sithaw hoi na sak o ih lokmaihaih pahnet han ai ah acoe oh; na Angraeng Sithaw mah sak han pakaa ih kawbaktih krang doeh sah o hmah.
Be careful that you do not forget the covenant of the LORD your God that He made with you; do not make an idol for yourselves in the form of anything He has forbidden you.
24 Hmai ah kangqong na Angraeng Sithaw loe, uthaih tawn Sithaw ah oh.
For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
25 Nangcae mah caa na sak o moe, na caanawk doeh caa sak o patoeng naah maw, to prae thungah atue kasawk ah na oh o naah maw, nam ro o moe, krangnawk hoi kanghmong krangnawk to na sak o; na Angraeng Sithaw mikhnuk ah kasae hmuen sakhaih hoiah anih to palung na phui o sak nahaeloe,
After you have children and grandchildren and you have been in the land a long time, if you then act corruptly and make an idol of any form—doing evil in the sight of the LORD your God and provoking Him to anger—
26 nangcae ih lok to aek hanah vaihniah van hoiah long hnukung to ka kawk han, to naah nangcae loe akra ai ah na toep o han ih Jordan vapui zaeh ih prae thungah nang hma nang taa o tih; kasawk ah na hing o mak ai, nam ro o boih tih.
I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you this day that you will quickly perish from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live long upon it, but will be utterly destroyed.
27 Angraeng mah prae kaminawk salakah na haek o tih, nangcae loe Angraeng mah haek ih Sithaw panoek ai prae kaminawk salakah, zetta ah ni nang hmat o tih.
Then the LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive among the nations to which the LORD will drive you.
28 To ah kami mah thing hoiah maw thlung hoiah maw sak ih, kahnu thai ai, thaihaih tawn ai, kacaa thai ai, ahmui doeh pahnuem thai ai sithawnawk to na bok o tih.
And there you will serve man-made gods of wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or eat or smell.
29 Toe to ahmuen hoiah na Angraeng Sithaw to na pakrong o, na palungthin boih, na hinghaih boih hoiah Anih to na pakrong o nahaeloe, Anih to na hnu o tih.
But if from there you will seek the LORD your God, you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
30 Hae hmuennawk hae nangcae nuiah phak boih moe, raihaih na tongh o naah, hnukkhuem ah, na Angraeng Sithaw khaeah nam laem o let moe, a lok to na tahngaih o nahaeloe,
When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the LORD your God and listen to His voice.
31 na Angraeng Sithaw loe tahmenhaih hoiah kakoi Sithaw ah oh pongah, anih mah na pahnawt o sut mak ai, paro mak ai; nam panawk khaeah a sak ih lokmaihaih to doeh pahnet mak ai.
For the LORD your God is a merciful God; He will not abandon you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers, which He swore to them by oath.
32 Sithaw mah long nui ih kaminawk sak tangsuek nathuem hoi kamtong, nangcae om ai nathuem ih atue thungah, van maeto hoi maeto bang khoek to dueng oh; hae baktih kalen hmuen oh vai maw! Hae baktih hmuen kawng na thaih o vai maw?
Indeed, ask now from one end of the heavens to the other about the days that long preceded you, from the day that God created man on earth: Has anything as great as this ever happened or been reported?
33 Nangcae mah na thaih o moe, na hing o haih baktih toengah, Sithaw mah hmai thung hoiah thuih ih lok thaih vaih kaminawk oh o maw?
Has a people ever heard the voice of God speaking out of the fire, as you have, and lived?
34 Na Angraeng Sithaw mah, Izip prae ah nangcae mikhnuk ah sak ih baktih toengah, tanoekhaih, angmathaih, dawnraihaih, misatukhaih, ban thacakhaih, a ban payanghaih, zitthok hmuen hnusakhaih rang hoiah, acaeng kaminawk thung ih acaeng maeto angmah hanah qoih vai maw?
Or has any god tried to take as his own a nation out of another nation—by trials, signs, wonders, and war, by a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors—as the LORD your God did for you in Egypt, before your eyes?
35 Angraeng loe Sithaw ni, tiah na panoek o hanah, hae hmuennawk hae amtuengsak; anih pacoengah kalah Sithaw roe om ai boeh.
You were shown these things so that you would know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides Him.
36 Nangcae thuitaek hanah van hoiah lok a thuih; anih mah long ah kalen parai hmai to amtuengsak moe, hmai thung hoiah thuih ih a lok to na thaih o.
He let you hear His voice from heaven to discipline you, and on earth He showed you His great fire, and you heard His words out of the fire.
37 Nam saenawk to palung pongah, nihcae ih caanawk to a qoih; a thacakhaih hoiah nangcae hma ah kaminawk to Izip prae thung hoiah a zaeh;
Because He loved your fathers, He chose their descendants after them and brought you out of Egypt by His presence and great power,
38 nangcae pongah thacak, pop kaminawk to nangcae hma ah haek, vaihni ih baktih toengah, nihcae ih prae thungah ang kun o sak moe, qawk ang toep o sak.
to drive out before you nations greater and mightier than you, and to bring you into their land and give it to you for your inheritance, as it is this day.
39 To pongah vaihniah, Angraeng loe van hoi long ah kaom Sithaw ah oh, tiah panoek oh loe, palung thungah poek oh; anih pacoengah kalah Sithaw roe om ai boeh.
Know therefore this day and take to heart that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other.
40 Nangmacae hoi na caanawk khoksak hoih o moe, na Angraeng Sithaw mah paek ih prae thungah hinglung na sawk o thai hanah, vaihniah kang paek ih a lokpaekhaih hoi a zaehhoih daannawk to pakuem oh, tiah a naa.
Keep His statutes and commandments, which I am giving you today, so that you and your children after you may prosper, and that you may live long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you for all time.
41 To pacoengah Mosi mah Jordan vapui ni angyae bangah, vangpui thumto pahoe pae;
Then Moses set aside three cities across the Jordan to the east
42 kami maeto mah a imtaeng kami to hnukmahaih om ai ah, poek ai pui hoi hum moeng nahaeloe, to ahmuen ah cawnh han oh; anih mah hae vangpuinawk thung ih vangpui maeto ah cawn nahaeloe, anih hinghaih to pathlung pae tih.
to which a manslayer could flee after killing his neighbor unintentionally without prior malice. To save one’s own life, he could flee to one of these cities:
43 To vangpuinawk loe, Reuben kaminawk hanah sak ih praezaek azawn ah kaom Bezer; Gad kaminawk hanah sak ih Gilead ah karom Ramoth; Manasseh kaminawk hanah sak ih Bashan ah kaom Golan vangpuinawk hae ni.
Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau belonging to the Reubenites, Ramoth in Gilead belonging to the Gadites, or Golan in Bashan belonging to the Manassites.
44 Mosi mah hae kaalok hae Israel kaminawk hma ah suek pae;
This is the law that Moses set before the Israelites.
45 Israel kaminawk Izip prae thung hoi angzoh o pacoengah, Mosi mah hae lokcaekhaih hoi zaehhoihaih daannawk hae kaminawk khaeah thuih pae,
These are the testimonies, statutes, and ordinances that Moses proclaimed to them after they had come out of Egypt,
46 Mosi hoi Israel kaminawk loe, Izip prae thung hoi tacawt o pacoengah, Jordan vapui hae bang, Beth-Peor azawn mikhmai kangtong ah kaom Heshbon vangpui ih, Amor siangpahrang Sihon to tuk o;
while they were in the valley across the Jordan facing Beth-peor in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites after they had come out of Egypt.
47 anih ih prae to a lak o pacoengah, Bashan siangpahrang Og ih prae doeh a lak pae o; Jordan ni angyae bangah kaom, Amor siangpahrang hnik doeh a hum o;
They took possession of the land belonging to Sihon and to Og king of Bashan—the two Amorite kings across the Jordan to the east—
48 Arnon vapui taengah kaom, Aroer vangpui hoi kamtong Hermon, tiah kawk ih Sion mae karoek to,
extending from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley as far as Mount Siyon (that is, Hermon),
49 Jordan ni angyae bang ih azawn ahmuen boih, tuipui taeng boih, Azup-Pishgah vangpui khoek to a lak o.
including all the Arabah on the east side of the Jordan and as far as the Sea of the Arabah, below the slopes of Pisgah.
